I recently found out that my phone is hardware locked. I hear that people are getting theirs replaced because it's a defect. I tried to explain this where I got my phone about a month ago. No dice. They called up T-Mobile and I could not get a new phone. How did everyone get a replacement? Also, did you get brand new ones or refurbs? Thanks.
Just call tmobile directly. Don't tell them you bought it from someone else. Pretend as if you night it from them. I have gotten mine replaced even though I bought it from else where. The key us to sound like you know what you're talking about and to be persistent. You may get a no can do answer but call again and you'll eventually get a rep that erl return it right away cause they don't know what else to do. Btw always say you have already done a factory reset before they try to get you to do it.

just call them up and say that you can't do a hard reset and that the phone is defective... go to the tmobile store, they are a dealership and are privately owned, not by tmobile, so most of the time they'll just laugh in your face... CALL them
I wouldn't mention recovery mode. Id mention something like gps not working and you need a phone with gps for your job and that you paid for a phone and it said it had gps when it doesn't work. But still mention that you have done numerous factory resets with no success. They'll send you another. I'm getting my third one and after 3 replacements you get a upgrade to something else or you can continue with your phone.

GPS isn't a "hardware" problem, its firmware related. Don't think that would work at all. They'll probably just redirect you to a new firmware update.

Nah itll work cause I've gotten 2 replacements but saying that. Trust me I'd you get the right repo that doesn't know they will just replace it. Plus after saying you have done a factory reset they have no more troubleshooting steps on their script. Lol! Plus whether its hardware or software related the phone should work as advertised and if it doesn't then that's their fault

I called tmo and told them I couldn't get into recovery using the vol up vol dow buttons and I want a replacement. The phone is supposed to be able to do this, therefore it is defective. They agreed and sent me a brand new phone. Recovery works flawlessly.

told you that's all you had to do i did the same... the newer replacement phones that they are now sending out aren't hardware locked anymore, they finally fixed the problem in QC
That is weird. How come the recovery mode thing didn't work the first time? I think they might ask me why I would want to get into recovery mode. What do I say?
What about people who don't have contracts with them? Will they do it if I don't have a contract? That's highly doubtful.

I found out by trying to get into recovery mode. I followed a bunch of different methods and none of them worked.

Yesterday, I fudged an install of a mod and got a bunch of TwLanuncher errors. My phone is hardware locked and after about an hour, Tmo decided to give me a new one. I simply told them and its true that I cant hard reset the phone. Only problem is that I cant flash back to stock either. Hope this isnt a problem...

I don't think T-Mobile will bother to check the contents of your phone. They'll just send it back to Samsung. And if Samsung discovers that your phone has custom firmware, they probably won't care either because the transaction was done already.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here. Simply tell them that you cant hard reset the phone.
I think you guys are over estimating the technical-prowess of the T-Mob reps. They wouldn't know about 'recovery' modes, custom firmwares, or anything. Most of the time, they're gonna take what you say at face value; just go for the easy in. Just say your phone is hardware locked, unable to do factory resets, etc. and play dumb. You don't need to tell them about recoveries or custom roms. Pretend you're a technologically-impotent average consumer fer chrissakes.

I'm trying to get my phone to be exchanged through warranty, but tmobile wants to do a technical troubleshooting to see if they can fix it. My question is.. Can tmobile see that my device is rooted when they run these tests? Should I unroot prior to letting them run tests? If so, can someone provide me with the most simple guide to unroot? Thanks!

Well either way if you are trying to get a warranty exchange you should revert everything to stock. Not just root. Look in the wiki as I can't post links from my phone. Some people will say the unlocker guide is better others will say the one here is. Look at each of them and see what you think would be the easiest

What exactly is wrong with your phone? Are you sure its hardware related?
You'll have to unroot and return to stock in order to initiate a warranty replacement. So if its hardware related then you'll have to unroot anyways to send it back.

1) they don't run 'tests'... they ask you to reboot, perform a factory reset... assuming you're talking about the queue card reading 'customer support' phone helpers.
2) make a nandroid backup... then do whatever they want. you can always restore.
i've sent in 3 G2's in the last couple of months. the service reps all ask me to reset it to factory blah blah blah even after describing the exact, widely known problem: faulty speaker
after 20 minutes of BS, they finally concede and sent out new phones each time. the support techs actually said they don't care if it's rooted, or running anything, so long as it's hardware related.
i wish the FUD about software/hardware would cease.

My phone's touchscreen is acting up. It would start selecting things by it else. Like I was pressing it. And sometimes it would press and stick (like u using ur finger and u keep it on the touchscreen) so then I can't do anything. Other times, the Y H and B keys don't work on my on screen keyboard. I've factory reseted several times. Even installed a fresh ROM but problem still persisted so I expect it to be a hardware issue now.

Well I just got off of the phone with a support tech from T-Mobile. Told them that I had rooted the phone and had restored it back to factory stock. They said since I rooted the device that it voided the warranty. =(
My phone has touch screen issues and I was attempted to get a replacement. I don't know if they wrote down in the notes but I am thinking I will try again tomorrow. If not then I will call about a different line with the same phone and just send them mine back.
Any suggestions?

Why would you EVER willingly tell them you rooted? there's no way for them to tell if you just unroot and return to stock before you send it in...
I know it was an idiot move on my part. I read a few times in various places that the reps don't really care if it was or not and I mistakenly told him when he asked. I can't go back in time now though
I think this is an extra thing to the fact that I have a few days left before my warranty expires anyways. I think I bought it on Sept 8th. :/

Most of the trade in web sites including amazon do not accept rooted tablet. Any suggestions on trade in programs that will accept a rooted (very good condition) tablet. Other than selling it on ebay or elsewhere. I am looking to trade in for another android tablet (nexus 7).

Why don't you un-root it? With it being rooted, that would not increase the trade value of the tablet by much.
So I just unroot. I was under the impression once its rooted it pretty much loses the warranty forever so unrooting wont help. I will try unrooting and send it back to amazon (where I bought it from), and see what happens. Thanks.

If you return it to stock and relock it they won't be able to tell the diff.
I had sent my xoom tablet to MaxBack and since I did not accept their re-quote they sent me back my xoom. When I powered it on, the colors including the Motorola Logo have a blue tint. And its very very prominent, not just light but a clearly distorted bluish tint.
Could they have damaged display of the device or is it some setting related, anyone know?

Could be damaged, or they sent you back a different xoom.
This is really crazy. Just wanted to trade in to get a nexus 7. I sent them a absolutely perfect tablet and I get back a totally damaged one.
Very poor first experience with online trade-in. Will have to see what answer they come back to me over the week,I sent them a note abt the issue.

Its weird. Mine had CM10.1 nightlie from Apr 12 when I sent them and the one I got back had the same too. But now after receiving I locked back the xoom to factory settings thinking may be its display settings related. But it has blue all over it. Camera too, when I go into camera blue patches are all over the screen. It definetley seems like messy affair to deal with them now.

Wow, that sucks. If that's the case then they totally damaged it. I hope you opted for the insurance. Let us know what happens.
There was no insurance option atleast not that I noticed. I will share when I hear back from them.

For giggles, reroot it flash an updated ROM. See if it makes a difference.
Things seem to getting only worse with this device. I saw this message and thought to try rooting it again. But only if I could turn the device on. The display wont even come up now. Couple of times it flickered with the display of home screen and thats it now even if I am hard booting nothing happens, display is just blank.
I'll keep trying and will try to root it again if it allows me to.

Very unfair practice this company has. The supervisor from MaxBack called me and said that they did not have any other xoom in their inventory at that time and the device display issue must be because I rooted the device. I told him I have been using the device in rooted state for months now. He is not willing to accept its because of something they did. He said such issues are imminent when rooted and it could have happened on the day I mailed them the device so its not something that they can do anything about. And he says because the device was rooted they rated the device worth $46 but due to this issue now he is willing to increase it to $56. I just hung up the phone. Its totally unfair and ridiculous of them to so bluntly lie. The tablet was flawless before I sent them and now it wont even power on. And he says its because I rooted. Unbelievable, worst experience the very first time of dealing with MaxBack. Now all I can do is dump this in trash, they totally messed up the device.
I also asked him if they saw any issue when they received the tablet. He said they did not see any issue when they received the tablet. Still he says, we have seen such issues with rooted devices so your custom rom or rooting must have caused the issue not our testing of the device. It was pointless.

Yes it does charge. It shows the white/green light in bottom when charging. And it does show backlight.

Any headway on getting your device to boot?
before receiving it back from MaxBack, I had already submitted a trade in at amazon assuming I will be able to unroot.
I did unroot after I got it back from maxback although the display was not good and eventually display went completely blank. But I did send it to amazon anyway. I am still waiting to hear from them. I think I may not get anything/much from amazon as I had opted for "no return". Will have to see, they are still processing my trade in.

Hi all, I need some help from you guys.
I read all about voiding warranty if I root my device but something happened to my nexus that I find too akward.
A couple weeks ago, I sent my Nexus to repair due to faulty gps.
It would not recieve any signal. I installed many different ROMs, wiped it, tryed factory image from Google themselves without any success. So I decided to send my Nexus to warranty. Before sending it in I installed the factory image once again and relocked the bootloader.
As I bought my device froma reseller (FNAC) I did not send it directly to ASUS. I went to FNAC instead.
The problem is that today I recieved a SMS from FNAC saying that the brand (ASUS) did not accept my device under warranty.
I am wondering what could possibly go wrong. I am a bit worried about all this as I am 100% sure I took all the precautions to unroot my device. I know it had a factory image from Google and the only thing I am not sure is if I relocked the bootloader.
Tomorrow I will go to FNAC to know what they have to say.
My question is, can they refuse to repair my device only because the bootloader is unlocked? I was not bricked, only the gps did not work.

Yep they can completely refuse to repair it if the bootloader is unlocked.
To begin with, you need to find out what reason Asus gave.
Any number of things are possible - for all you know, your device got dropped/damaged after it left your hands, but before it arrived at Asus. Or any of a number of other reasons.
But it would be interesting for you to follow up your OP with an account of your experience.
Try installing this
If it's not hard-bricked then try going through Clockwork Recovery (For 4.2.2)
Then download Google Apps from this webpage goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
Then the GPS will work and other Google Apps just fine, and if you want you can start fresh from stock then root it again then put in the ROM (CyanogenMod 10.1 RC2 is the best one) or which ever one you want to use then install Google Apps (gapps) through Clockwork by choosing 'Add Zip' then adding the zip in the downloads folder or your nexus 7. There is though a RC3 and RC4 but I prefer RC2 get.cm/?device=grouper&type=RC

Ok guys so it had nothing to do with software.
I did setup my tablet nicely so ASUS could not complain about unlocking anything.
So the reason they refused to repair my tablet under warranty is a small scratch that cant even be called dent. It has about 1mm diameter and is more a lack of paint than a dent. The small scratch is right next to two connector (see images below) and ASUS repair team said that one connector was not there. They classified it as my fault for damaging the device.
I cannot believe that a small scratch can cause that damage. My opinion is that the connector was badly installed or was not even there at the beggining since I never tested the gps when I bought the device.
Plus the repair cost would be more than 200€, almost the price of a new Nexus. They want to replace the motherboard!
I will post the pictures that ASUS took from my device as soon as I can.
Btw, any1 knows what those connectors do?

Those are the GPS antenna pins.
I sent my nexus 7 in because I erased the boot loader (I'm a dumb***) and they upgraded me from an 8gb to 16gb and my nexus was all banged and beat up odd they wouldn't fix yours

I could not believe when they told me that they refused to repair due to a small scratch... Anyway I refused to pay for the repair budget and made a complaint to oficial authorities. I will be able to use my nexus as is while they process the complaint.
Oh and they want to replace the whole board just because it is missing 1 pin from the gps connector. Is that normal?

ya hopefully mine was bought from google play so maybe the warranty is different from the non google play ones...
Doubt it mate. It always comes down to repair companies that ASUS hires.
In my country there are many complaints with the repair service of ASUS. The company that repairs the products here for ASUS is awful. Maybe in your country it's better.
Hey guys, i recently bought a phone off of eBay and added insurance on it through open enrollment at Verizon. It was a refurb phone for Assurion. Now the issue is that the screen sometimes become unresponsive and requires me to shut the screen of and turn it back on in order for it to function (The screen never has issues with the spen though). Upon calling Verizon, i was still rooted and it looks like they can actually look through you phone and see if you have root and what applications you have include safe strap. I pretended that i didn't know what the guy was talking about and told him i had nova launcher and that was probably my problem. I then performed a clean Odin factory stock wipe and the phone is back to normal. The knox hasn't even been tripped. When i called back verizon the guy told me "it looks like the phone was rooted the last time you called and now it's absolutely clean. I'm sorry, but because it was rooted, you're warranty is void". Always unroot before you call in!
Do you guys think i can contact Samsung and have them fix this issue for me? I doubt they will know if im rooted if i remove it all before i send it right

He definitely was not lying. The first rep i spoke to about 2 weeks ago was naming all the apps i had! He mentioned safestrap, superuser, along with other apps that had nothing to do with rooting. He made it personal to which you can tell he was looking at what i had. Also, the second time the guy had me update My Verizon Mobile. This is what they use to get access to your phone. Be warned everyone!
I wonder how this is legal. It's they can see apps installed what else can they see? My pictures, my documents? And what keeps them from only accessing my phone when I call in for support?

OK, I will try contacting Samsung today. The only issue is that I'd have to be without a phone for 2-3 weeks . Also about the my Verizon mobile, they ask you to download it or update it in order to allow them to troubleshoot your phone (they don't tell you that's the reason, they just ask you to update it).
Remember...warranty and insurance are 2 different things. If in the TOS they list having the right to refuse warranty service due to unauthorized software modification, then that is Verizon's right. If after restoring stock it still has an issue then you have nothing to lose by trying Samsung.

This is why you should not grant verizon mobile superuser rights i believe. The last update to Verizon mobile asked for these rights on my phone and I said no. I have a feeling that this is how they can see what you have on your phone.

I recently called because I was having proximity sensor issues. I immediately explained to the technician all of the steps I've taken to try to fix the problem and he agreed that I had everything possible so he was just going to issue a new device to me. I was still rooted at the time but he did not check my apps. Verizon has been doing this for a few years now but if you're smooth on the phone and explain all the steps you've taken upfront you can avoid them checking your apps. Google is able to do the same thing.

I immediately explained to the technician all of the steps I've taken to try to fix the problem and he agreed that I had everything possible so he was just going to issue a new device to me. I was still rooted at the time but he did not check my apps. Verizon has been doing this for a few years now but if you're smooth on the phone and explain all the steps you've taken upfront you can avoid them checking your apps. Google is able to do the same thing.

Awww man, I know that this is a hardware issue and the root did nothing to it. I realized that this is an assurion replacement as the sticker on the inside of the phone says that. It looks like they didn't fix the phone correct when sending it to the previous owner. Debating if I should add insurance through the open enrollment Verizon is having and just submit a claim. And before anyone says "that would be warranty fraud since you already have an issue"... Keep in mind that assurion issued this phone with issues so technically I should get a free replacement.

Call back and when you can say what option you would like say "cancel service", you'll immediately get transferred to their "do what we can to keep you as a customer" department. Explain to them the issue you're having and that yes, the phone was rooted, but it has been returned to it's original software and the issue is still there. Tell them that you were unaware that rooting your phone would void the warranty and that you've had issues since receiving the replacement. It's worth a shot and may work.

Thank you for helping out. This sounds like a good idea. Although I still have about 1 year left of service left so they may use that against me. I also cancelled the $3 extended warranty yesterday since it was rendered "useless". The sad part is the only reason I rooted the phone was to increase the maximum output for the volume.

When you first call ask them how much it would cost to cancel your service, then they'll ask why at some point.
I would talk with Verizon and see what they say. Unroot first though. Should be fine. When assurien sends phones out they are refurbished so still claimable.

Thanks for you reply man, i really appreciate it. Before calling, i decided to try something out. I took apart the 12 screws on the back of the phone and pried the back off with my finger nail. Then i disconnected the LCD/Digitizer ribbon cable and blew some air there, i then re-fastened it and mad sure to push a little hard on it. I've been running strong so far for 15 minutes and everything is working smoothly with no touch screen issues! Let's hope it keeps working :highfive:

I called vzw to get another battery, and according to them, using strong wifi results in more battery usage than poor LTE. First I've heard that.
