Fingerprint scanner other uses. - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, long time nexus user, new 6p user here.
I feel it would be sweet to be able to launch different apps with different fingers. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks.

As far as i know we can click photos with fp scanner using Dactyl.

"Fingerprint" screen unlock?!

What with MIUI making lock screens customizable, and the EVO gods somehow automatically knowing what every thread is about without reading them....
How cool, would a lock screen that looked like a "theatrical" biometric scanner, wherein the user need touch and hold where the "scanner" is for a few seconds for the phone to unlock.
Anyone else have any neat lock screen ideas?

Yea, but I don't think I can say those here.
Thats already been done on the iphone. In fact there is a few apps like that.
Pretty sure these already exist... maybe this one?

A real fingerprint scanner lockscreen would be too freaky, speaking from a security standpoint. I'm sure the government will issue phones like that some time in the near-future, to safeguard us all from 'terrorism'.
Sent From My UN-Rooted Evo!
I don't think the OP was talking about a real fingerprint reader. The Evo's screen isn't capable of capturing that anyway. The idea of an unlock screen that looks like a fingerprint reader does sound kind of cool, although if it worked by just holding your finger in one spot while it "scans," it might be too easy to unlock it by mistake.

Yeah I thats the one I thought of. That's like exactly what he's talking about. It pretends to read your fingerprint to unlock your phone. It's kinda cool, but loses its novelty.

only works as a ''lockscreen'' if you use a replacement launcher like adw, LPP, etc and choose the launcher as a locked app.
works fairly well after several training photos are taken in all sorts of settings and light, but is just too slow for my tastes... although i am excited too see how much better it gets, as it could be a serious consideration after further development
that's awesome! Thanks for the link! Totally what I was thinking. Face recognition by the camera would be cool too, although my front face camera got spooky 6+ months ago, so I don't know if that would ever work...

This would be very cool. Just improve on the facial lock that comes with the camera and we be good to go.

[Q] Barcode Scanner

Obviously, the Nexus 7 does not have a camera installed on its back side. Can anyone confirm if any barcode scanning apps would work? I know it would be awkward trying to scan a barcode with the front camera, but if anyone knows please reply!

How would you expect to line up the barcode without being able to look at the screen? I think scanning is out...
None of the scanning apps allow use of the front facing camera, so unless they decide to add support, they're not going to work.
and it's incredibly unlikely to be honest.
Unlikely I agree.
But think about the last time you bought groceries.
The scanner is like a big tablet, and you just pass the item in front of the camera.
I can see no technical reason why that model would not work.
oh i'm sure it would work with the front camera, but none of the apps support it as far as i know.
I'm sure you could request that the devs add support. up to them if they want to.
A high resolution, autofocus camera is needed to read most barcodes. The front camera might be able to handle QR codes.
Yeaa... I thought about this a few days after i posted this.... Isnt that what phones are for? because im not bringing my tablet around anyway.. just thought it would be a cool thing to have, stupid question by my

I don't think it is stupid. It may well be technologically unlikely. But no harm in asking the question. And if someone did this I'd be delighted. It would mean I could do my home shopping grocery order much quicker by just standing in my kitchen. I accept however that it is a long shot (very long).
Dunno knw why they gave a camera on first place..... To create a cheaper tablet.?

Video calls. That appears to be the only real reason, for Skype and other VOIP systems. The resolution and fixed focus would bear that out, too. It's clearly not ment to be used as a regular camera, scanner, etc (though I'm sure someone will figure out how to do it...)
And that's fine with me, because the competition (Kindle Fire, Nook) don't have even that camera.
Scanning apps
There are a couple of scanning apps now for the Nexus 7 such as LearnPad Scanner (I can't post links yet)
Learn pad does work with bar and qr codes. Just scanned my Pepsi bottle.

That is cool, sadly I can't get it to read any barcodes though. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Worked great for me for scanning in barcode for Google Authenticator.
Are you holding the tablet in the correct orientation (landscape with camera on left when looking at N7) ?

Yes I am. It must be me if it is working for everyone else. Or maybe UK barcodes don't work on it. It says it only does one type in its help pages.

Hi, I'm an author of Barcode Scanner. It doesn't use the front camera since only rear cameras are treated as 'real' cameras by Android, and the API for using second cameras appeared later than the API leve the app supports (2.3), which makes it tricker.
We made a 'premium' version that does, among other things, support front-camera-only devices like the Nexus 7.
Search for "barcode scanner plus" on Google Play -- sorry I can't posts links yet.

Sean,
Would it be possible to have the app scan a bar-code using a phone and send the information via Bluetooth to the tablet? That way we have the best of both worlds. I would certianly pay for "Plus" to get this option!
Just found this... was looking for a way to scan QR codes for shipping labels into the Nexus 7. Learnscan works good, just takes a bit getting used to lining it up as it is backwards and reversed from what you are used to.
Works good enough in a lit room. Scanning stuff off the screen is easier.
Can you just put the tablet down on the table, bring the product to the camera, and look at the screen to position the barcode?
It seems very doable.
you can... in fact that is what I end up doing, but it is much harder than you think it might be. the app changes the camera view by rotating it, so you are working against where you think you should be moving to have you end up seeing....
If you had anything to drink, forget about it...
You have to actually try it to see what I mean... its like driving backwards except the camera view you are looking at is rotated 90 degrees.
the app btw is free, or least the one I tried.

Fingerprint sensor

Will the sensor recognize more that one finger? Be nice to have it work with either your left or right 2nd finger.

I think it can recognize up to five different fingerprints per google account.

Well I've had 3 previous Android phones with a fingerprint scanner. The real question is what happens to that fingerprint if you flash a new ROM? I had a Note 4 that had to be factory restored due to the fingerprint not fully erasing itself and going to another ROM which caused a whole slew of problems including lag so bad that I didn't even want to use my $800 phone....I couldn't even type out a text msg because the keyboard would lag so bad. Look into the Note 4 section of XDA and you'll find people with the problem.... Now I'd like to find out what'll happen to the 6P and 5X in the same regards.

Active fingerprint reader

Hello everyone!
I just had a look at the new A5 2017 because I want to buy one for my mother and a feature that was very nice and useful was the active fingerprint reader. Just rest the finger on the home button and the device wakes right from the Always on Display.
I am running android N with the new Grace UX on my S7 Edge and i was wondering if there is a setting somewhere i can enable to be able to use this feature.
I know some people will think is useless, so is no need to comment for no reason.
A5 with new hardware... soooo nope. We dont have that on s7 edge.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
That is sad. I was really liking the feature ,hope somneone will figure out how to add it later.
It's only a workaround, but downloading Always on Amoled from the Playstore is working just fine. Fingerprint is always on, no need to push it, and you get double tap to wake, plus other useful features. Definitely worth a try
it's the same hardware, only Samsung is the usual ****. improvements only on new smartphone to increase the sales

Already tried this method , but the battery drain is huge. Maybe someone will figure out how to do it exactly like the new A series.

probably sure someone will make a way to have the function also on s7, but the problem is that there will need root to work

Was going to say that having the reader on constantly may cause some form of wake lock.

Best unlock method?

Hi everyone, has anyone discovered which is the best most reliable way to unlock the new galaxy? I've been playing around with iris unlock and face recognition (since the fingerprint scanner accuracy looks pretty ****, with the case that I got at least) but I'm not sure which is better or even if one is better than the other. Sometimes they're both insanely fast but some other times they take a while

I use the iris scanner trick is when unlocking look into the area of the red light unlocks in a heartbeat.
Facial recognition is easy to fool with a picture so iris scanner all the way. I have registered by iris and fingerprints for all scenarios.
Might want to register the same finger more than once. Maybe that will help.

Well you are 100% correct thanks a lot for this insane trick! Tbh I don't care much about protection, I was just looking for the fastest one that would offer protection from friends and stuff like that (for instance if I lay the phone on the table and it gets picked up by someone) but you seem to have that down, thanks a lot!

No worries mate it's the simple things that help.
love the phone, hate the unlock, moving from my S6 this is a total nightmare, i'm actually considering sacking it off its so bad. Fingprint is a faff so thats out of the window, its also impossible which most non samsung cases as they are too thick. IRIS, total waste of time, works about 1 in 50 for me, too dependant on lighting conditions, this was never going to work though was it, just a gimmick.
So we are left with location unlocking and face recog, face recog seems to be ok but its far from secure.
Another issues ive found is that if you are using a non samsung flip case and are using an auto screen lock app that triggers when you close your case, and then opens the screen when you open your case.... face recog and location recog no longer works, you are left with pin only which is also a pain.
I guess the only way to do this would be to shell out on a genuine samsung case, so thats another £35.
Its a very pretty phone but its left me feeling underwhelmed due to these and a few other issues I wont bore people with, my S6 is still a better phone in some respects.
Maybe I'm weird, but I actually like the fingerprint sensor. Especially when taking the S8 out of my pocket.
I've set both the iris and face unlocks to activate when the screen turns on, which makes them super quick, but I've been using the face unlock more because my eyes hurt when I use the iris scanner. But maybe this is just in my head. Anyone else experiencing this? The iris scanner is better because it is more secure and works in any lighting...but I think my retinas are burning
Yeah I got use to the fingerprint position.. I use both pin and fingerprint.

It can happen with iris scanner since it's using infra red light. Samsung warn us when we setup the iris scanner. You should stop using it
I tried all methods to see what's the best for me.
There are 2 modes for face recognition. One is faster, the other one is more secure. With the second one, your phone can't be fooled with a picture, video or a selfie of you. But I don't really like it because it doesn't always works, depending on light, of your position, posture, etc...
I'm left-handed, so the fingerprint sensor is not ideally positioned. But depending on how I grab my phone, it can be convinient to use it.
I think the iris scanner is the best unlocking choice. It's the most secure way to unlock a phone in the world, it's fast, can't be fooled, it works as well in full sun as at night (it doesn't need light to work, infra-red).
So I use the iris scanner and fingerprint scanner daily

Hmm, I missed the setting to make the face unlock more secure. I need to check on that. Thanks for the tip.
Iris scanner works pretty good. I registered as indicated, in medium light room away from windows, and it works perfectly in same conditions. But outside in powerful daylight, I had problems (or I was squinting more than usual )
Fingerprint scanner works pretty fine, as well. At the beginning, I had problems, but then I realized that I registered 2 vertical fingerprints, and were recognized only with the phone in that position. Erased them and re-registered in the normal holding position (slanted as you naturally grab the phone). Now works very fast, 9 times out of 10 trials.
Face recognition is the lowest security feature (my wife didn't manage to open it, though )

I don't think that setting is there in all variants. Someone posted a a screenshot of where that toggle is located in settings and when I looked there I didn't have it. I have an S8 on AT&T running the OTA update that pushed out yesterday. (G950USQU1AQD9)
I'm getting used to the fingerprint but the iris scanner actually works the majority of the time which I didn't expect. I'm not sure I like the idea of them introducing it for mobile payments though.

Fingerprint. I just have the s8 face down so I do not have to hunt for scanner. Easy peasy.
