[Help] Replace USB port on N910C - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heya,
It seems like my usb connector is busted (or the entire daughterboard. i'm not sure) but I'm wondering if anyone has had experience replacing just the connector?
The phone still charges via usb, but when i plug it in, it says that the USB device has malfunctioned and it won't connect to the computer. I don't know if this is a daughterboard failure or just a port failure.
i'm hoping to find a way to replace the part without having to remove the screen if it is even remotely possible..
any advice?
Thanks

It looks like you need to remove the screen to replace the USB port. The part is probably quite inexpensive and unless your soldering is extremely good then I'd just replace the whole thing. I did it in my Note 3, that was easy, but never done it on my Note 4.
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+Note+4+Micro-USB+Port+Daughterboard+Replacement/35006

yeah, my biggest worry is that if i have it done by someone, they would crack the screen and a $65 repair will turn into a $300 repair....

Device modified in any way? Knox tripped?.....If not then (in the EU at least) Samsung provides a 2 year warranty......
It *could* be argued that the usb port should be expected to last for the full 2 years at least......
Check your paperwork/warranty card and try for warranty repair.

have you try connecting it to another computer?
my 910H is acting like that too when connected with my home PC.
but if connected with office PC, no problem appears. It mounted well on windows explorer.
driver issue, perhaps.

So did you get it repaired already? I have exactly same problem on my N910C. Tried different cables, different pc, factory reset, reinstall driver and other possible fixes that I can find on the net but still can't get it recognized on pc. I sent the phone to some repair shop to replace the usb board but the outcome is still the same.
I've bought the phone as a used unit and straightaway updated it OTA to Marshmallow. It is possible that I got a bad firmware?

unfortunately not yet. I'm still waiting for the part to arrive.
I might pay someone to do it for me, but other than that, i'll have to just try my luck.
I don't know about firmware because my issue cropped up randomly and I've been on this rom for over 3 months. so i think it's more of a port or board failure.

One thing *might* come in to play with the replacement......
On both the S2 and the S5, there were/are several versions of the board for each device.....none of them are interchangeable.
If Samsung follows previous form, this may well be the case for the Note as well.

yup! indeed that was what was holding me up. I have the N910C and no repair shop in the US has that board, so i have to order it from China....

But....If it follows the Samsung pattern, there will be more than one version of that board for the N910C......
Going back as far as my experience with the S2, my device was the international variant, and i discovered that just for that one device, there were 4 different versions of the board.
They were....
REV1.2, REV2.2, REV2.3 and REV2.4....
I had to get the matching version otherwise it led to problems like reduced/loss of signal, otg failure, data transfer failure......The list went on and on....

oh if you're talking that specific, then no there's no problems that I know of about specific revisions.
If there was it would be all over ebay with different revisions of the boards.

Um....done a little ebay research and for the F variant, I've seen 4 different revisions (so far)........
0.6, 0.8, 0.9 & 1.8
I think getting the right one is gonna be critical if, as I said before, it's the same 'pattern' as with previous devices.....

and looking up the F variant.. I don't see any revisions as you said either: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...+usb+board.TRS0&_nkw=n910f+usb+board&_sacat=0

I went into a random selection of listings and zoomed in on the images.....

[Q] USB Port

My big bulky phone with the big bulky extended battery dropped to the floor as I got up from my chair, not realising that the usb cord had decided to entangle me. Next thing I know, my precious hd2 is lying on the floor, screen faced down, and the usb cord "ripped".
Everything seemed to be working fine, but when I tried plugging it into my dock, it wouldn't charge, so I tried holding it at angles - it worked, but whenever i let go, it would stop charging.
Does anyone know how to fix this without having to take the whole thing apart?
Sorry friend but you will have to take the phone apart to fix this problem. Might even have to replacecthe mainbosrd as the USB port is attachedcto the mainboard and can not be replaced seperately.

As a temporary solution you could buy a wall charger and an extra battery off ebay for a couple of bucks, changing and charging batteries on the go works for me!

ty, but I'm worried that it'll get worse in the long term (long being anything over a couple of days), ie. completely stop working, and data transfer? I'd have to use wireless adb to do transferring.
Is it still under warranty? You might get lucky

I looked at the warranty terms and conditions, and it says that anything that has to do with the usb port area will not be considered as being part of the warranty, and I don't have the receipt because I got it 2nd hand. :'(
it could be fixed, but the port must be resoldered to the motherboard. In case some circuit tracks were broken in the incident, they will have to be remade, a good service center could handle it.
Most of them aren't too fond of using real electronic measurements and algorithms in order to track corresponding usb port pins to various points on the motherboard but it's not impossible. If my hd2 would have been damaged in this way i won't hesitate to crack it open and get my hands dirty
If I wanted to, how much do you think I'd be able to sell it for? Thinking of selling it, and mybe getting a used tmous, if I can afford it.
I've managed to find some tmous on sale, so, what do you guys reckon I could sell mine for?
When I broke my first LEO512 by thinking I could repair it, I took the individual components (Case, chassis, motherboard) out and sold them on ebay. I got about £119 in total for it all
You could always sell it for full price and let the buyer find out themselves what's wrong with it.

I'm just too scared that I'll mess it up and just make it even worse, thinking of selling it, getting what I can for it, and getting another second hand.
I have this problem my micro usb port has completely broke, and the circuit lines on the mother board are screwed up, HTC will not touch it
gone the route of a wall charger for now came with another battery for £8 delivered so im happy i can still use my phone, while looking on Evilbay for a new hd2

Finally had the courage to open it, and as you said, the connections are more or less broken off, and I've got shaky hands (without nerves) and can't handle soldering it, so I'm thinking of patching it up with some blue tack

Broken USB port fixable?

Hi guys,
I've got a problem with the USB port on my DHD. It charges fine - no problems there - but it refuses to transfer data! I've tried different cables, different ports on the PC, a different PC and a different OS and still the same problem. The PC(s) don't recognise anything has been plugged in and the phone doesn't ask me what type of connection I want. I've cleared the defaults and set it to 'ask every time' but still nothing. Therefore I summise that the USB port on the phone is dead (despite the fact that it transfers power just fine).
My question is; do you think it's fixable without returning to the manufacturer? It's out of warranty by a few months now and I bought it SIM free so I can't go crawling to my network with it. Do you think this is within the capabilities/resources of high street repair shops? The reason I'm asking here instead of in said shops is because I live miles away from the nearest one that I know of and don't fancy making the trip for nothing!
Basically I really, REALLY want to root my phone and start messing around with custom ROMs - but obviously I can't if I have no USB connection :'(
Thanks guys.

Have you tried cleaning the port out with something like a paperclip or a sewing needle? I had the same problem as you and after doing that it works perfectly. It just had a load of fluff from my pocket stuck in it. I went through 3 cables before I realised this :/

Yeah I tried a sewing needle and an air duster. As far as I can tell it's dust free now but still having the same problem.

You sure it's out of Warranty? Certainly in the UK warranty is two years and the phone was released here October 2010 thus all UK phones are still well within warranty
Use a magnifying glass or equivalent, and carefully inspect the contacts inside the connector. You might need to clean them up by scraping them down a little. It is very possible they might have some debris stuck on them. If the port is very loose, take the phone apart and using needle nose pliers, squeeze the connector housing together a little to tighten it up. Had to do this on my TP2 port after a while(mini USB) and it worked like a charm.

I asked in a rapair shop and the guy there seemed to think it was likely a problem with the traces on the charging block. Although that was just his opinion from experience - he didn't actually look at it. I declined his offer to open it up and have a gander.
I wasn't aware it was a 2 year warranty. I might send it back then.
Has anyone had any experience with HTC's service centres?
Are they likely to also flash the phone with the latest firmware whilst they're at it? AFAIK (though do correct me if I'm wrong as admittedly I haven't checked in a while) there's no known way to gain root for the latest firmware.

[Q] Sudden Death - please help! How to fix?

Hi,
My SM-N90005, was rooted on 4.3.3 (polish fw) from day 1 and worked perfectly. No glitches, no problems (except an externalSD memory write problem).
This night it died while under charge, for no reason. On forums I read it's called Sudden Death Syndrome and it's quite common to Note 3 but I could not find a fix exceppt to ship it back to Samsung for a replacement. I read of fixes for Note 2 and S3 etc but not for my model.
Has anyone found a fix for the Note 3 SM-n9005 SDS?
Thanks in advance for any help.

This doesn't match. Android 4.3 never had any limitations regarding writing to external SD card.
Are you sure, that you have the SDS? From what I have heard/seen, this was fixed on Note 2 by software updates and hasn't occurred on Note 3.

It is an official polish 4.4.3 downlaoded from Samobile and flashed using Odin
I cannot boot the phone.

I can't find such firmware, nor have I seen any 4.4.3 being released to any Samsung phone at all (4.4.3 was released only short time ago, unrealistlic that Samsung phones would have update so quickly).
Sorry. I was right first time. It have official 4.3.3 (not 4.4.3)
I had ExtSD card memory problems you can find my posts everywhere (username: ascanio1)
Anyway, my problem has nothing to do with ExtSD card memory problems as those were long fixed (in Fenruary) and everything worked perfectly since.

When did the Note 3 ever get SDS? I heard they were fixed on Note 2's 4.2.2 firmware. (My phone never had SDS
BUT if what u say is true and your phone has SDS (which is unlikely), your only hope is Samsung service centre (if u still have warranty, that it) or JTAG (I think it works)

That's (probably) the JTAG I was talking about.
Singapore? Just a few words. Convenient. Hot. Expensive (?). Safe. If u don't mind expensive stuff (Singapore has been rated at the most expensive country to live in lol), I would say come to Singapore.
EDIT: Having hols in China right now so... yea. (China y u ban Google )

Yeah... but in the meanwhile I need a replacement. What's the best or closest competitor to the Note 3 (same size & specs) in your opinion?
I would say LG G3?
I live in Tokyo... I doubt that there's any place more expensive than Tokyo! Anywhere in the world will seem cheap after Tokyo! It's the hot and humd that annoys me... but HK... might be the same...
I had a really bad experience with a HK Note 3 SM-N9005 bought from imobilePhonex: I found out that it was not HK or International Model as claimed and that the warranty was only valid in some middle eastern country... the retailer asked me 300US$ to handle the warranty... DOUH ?!?!?! what warranty is it if I have to pay 3 big ones?
Do you know of any good or trust worthy online shops from Singapore where to buy phones from?

My phone died: absolutely no signs of life, no reboot, no charging light, nothing at all!
I thught that it was the SDS but I then realized that it might be the battery and so I just bought a new one. To my great surprise, the phone does not charge the battery. When I bought the battery it was at 46% charge and after 8 hours of charging the new battery was down to 41% charge!!!
If I try to charge the batttery when the phone is switched off, no red light appears but the phone vibrates intermittently (every 5 seconds) and keeps doing this until I disconnect the charger.
If I try to charge the phone when it is switched on, the charging Symbol inside the battery icon appears and also the red light is on...
But in both cases the battery does not get charged! I tried 3 different battery chargers (original Samsung) and 3 different cables.
I heard somewhere that there can be some software malfunction that causes this but I can't remember or find the right post...
Help!
Not charging the battery
Update: the phone will charge properly only if connected to my laptop USB ports but still won't charge from any wall charger.

Weird... If it's a software malfunction you'll have no chance of saving it since you can't get anything to start.

P.S. Try these steps to get into download mode.
No download mode?
If your phone won’t enter download mode, you can try three things:
A USB jig. Don’t pin your hopes on this, they rarely succeed in this scenario.
‘Jump starting’ – You might need someone else to give you a hand for this. Take the battery out of your phone and wait 30 seconds. Now, press the button combination to enter download mode, and with this combination still depressed, get someone to put the battery back in. Hopefully this will jolt your phone into download mode.
Take out the phone battery, and re-insert it, but don’t turn the phone on. Now, plug in the charger while holding the volume down button. Keep holding volume down till you enter download mode.
If your phone won’t enter download mode, and will do nothing but get hot when you attempt to do anything to it (charge it, turn it on), then your motherboard is in need of replacement.
Your options
I’ve seen a lot of people, when their Odin flash fails, either:
Give up. Not a good option.
Flash a .pit file. That should be used as an absolute last resort. There’s a lot to try before getting to that stage! If a flash of a .pit file fails in Odin, your phone is well and truly unrecoverable, and you will need a motherboard (MB) replacement.
Send their phone to a service centre. That costs money (& you’re without a phone for a week or so).

Yes. Besides I blind tested all 3 chargers, cables and wall sockets. They work with other electrical devices.

With the new battery I can start the phone and it works perfectly normally. The only malfunction is that it won't charge the battery from wall charger so I have to use laptop.

Flash a new ROM? If it's a software malfunction only a new ROM can solve your issue. And a .pit file would be useless here.

S7 Edge International TWRP Install (No Usb?)

Hi Guys,
From experience, i probably know what the answer will be, however since my USB port is damaged, does anyone know if it is possible to install TWRP another way?
I'm sure Odin is the only way to go with this but just double checking before i need to strip the phone and replace that dam cheap ass usb port. Its been a couple of years since i was rooting devices, so maybe something had changed that i am not aware of.
Apologies for the short post and thanks to all potential comments.
Best,
Darren
Back in my days we used Mobile Odin, wonder if it still available..
You should get the usb repaired by Samsung before you invalidate the warranty

Ah yeah... i forgot about that lol its been too long...
After taking a quick look, this may be deprecated now and an alternative might be 'Flashfire'. Still looking into it but i have two new alternatives so thanks for the reminder. :good:

Yeah i might look into it and see how much it will cost and over what time frame, i might be close too, or just outside of my warranty.
I see a lot of posts across various sites about this so i think the connector is crap quality.
Its my first USB port to die on a phone, ever.

Charging/USB Issues

Hi XDA,
OP5 has recently started having this issue. Was wondering if any of you have had or fixed it.
When plugging in my USB cord, the phone behaves as if it is being rapidly plugged in and out, like 2-4x per second. As a result, I cannot get to the phone via adb or fastboot. The phone also seems to have the issue regardless of kernel installed. However, I have not tried with an older OOS version.
Any ideas?
That seems more like a hardware issue.

This is what I am thinking. Its weird b.c it can be sporadic.
Trying to get an advance replacement from OP b.c I cant go w.o a phone for weeks while this one is diagnosed/repaired. Anyone have luck getting an adv replacement from them?
Does your phone charge normally or do you see odd behavior there as well?
^^ it jumps on/off charge rapidly... complete w vibrating.
I managed to use a toothpick to scrape the top/bottom of the usb port contacts... seems to have improved, however, I am wary since sometimes it stops happening for a few hours/days.
The phone actually does charge, the biggest issue is annoyance of the constant vibrating/screen light up & the complete lack of ability to adb or transfer files via usb when it happens.

You might want to try cleaning the port using a can of condensed air--but you need to be careful to use very short bursts at an angle, not straight in and also not to spray any condensation into the port. It sounds like your port is either dirty or loose. I've never heard of an Android USB port getting dirty enough to affect functioning when the phone is so new but if the toothpick helped maybe that's the problem. I am wary of the USB port on this phone. It doesn't feel very solid to me compared to previous phoned I've owned. The headphone port isn't good either. It takes very little movement for a headphone plug to pop out.

Condensed air is a good idea.
Yes I am worried the solder has started coming loose on the port. Although, if that were the case, pressure would presumably cause the issue to go away, which it does not.
I am hoping it might have been a tiny piece of metal or something that got in there and was causing issues. So far so good this morning when plugging the phone in. Still working the replacement route with OP, but at least it seems to be holding for now.
Ill try to keep this thread updated with results.
Report Back.
The direction I insert my USB C cable seems to have issues with one direction vs the other.... seems to make me think something is screwed up with teh contatcs within the phone.

That's possible but I think trying to clean the port with condensed air is still worth a try. I don't like the way the USB connection feels when a cord is inserted or removed from the OP5 so it wouldn't surprise me if a contact did go wonky. Keep us updated. This is a problem other owners may eventually encounter as well.

Yep, tried after that post with condensed air too... gave it a spray 3x for about 1-2 secs each time. Still only working one direction with the USB-C.
I am confident its a hardware issue at this point. Im waiting to hear back from OnePlus on approval for an advance replacement. Phone is not even 2 months old

That sucks. Are there any authorized service centers for OnePlus phones or is the only option sending the phone in? I tried to find out before buying the OP5 but nobody seemed to know.

Dude, dont buy a OP... only option is to send it in. Being told they denied my request for an advance replacement. Its a 1.5mo old phone. & I have to be without it for weeks while you (oneplus) fix. Um, no.

I have one with them. Problem is, they are asking me to go without a phone for over 2 weeks. I am in sales and make my living on having my phone with me at all times.

Won't they send you a loaned phone? What country are you from? In the UK you'd have rights against this.

All good. Our rights suck with stuff like this.
Anyway. Hope this thread is helpful to prospective buyers. Shame, because this phone is pretty sweet otherwise.

I have a backup phone so that wouldn't be a disaster for me but I can understand how it could be a huge inconvenience for many people. It's too bad they don't contract out with one of the phone repair chains. That would make things much easier for owners.
