Broken USB port fixable? - Desire HD General

Hi guys,
I've got a problem with the USB port on my DHD. It charges fine - no problems there - but it refuses to transfer data! I've tried different cables, different ports on the PC, a different PC and a different OS and still the same problem. The PC(s) don't recognise anything has been plugged in and the phone doesn't ask me what type of connection I want. I've cleared the defaults and set it to 'ask every time' but still nothing. Therefore I summise that the USB port on the phone is dead (despite the fact that it transfers power just fine).
My question is; do you think it's fixable without returning to the manufacturer? It's out of warranty by a few months now and I bought it SIM free so I can't go crawling to my network with it. Do you think this is within the capabilities/resources of high street repair shops? The reason I'm asking here instead of in said shops is because I live miles away from the nearest one that I know of and don't fancy making the trip for nothing!
Basically I really, REALLY want to root my phone and start messing around with custom ROMs - but obviously I can't if I have no USB connection :'(
Thanks guys.

Have you tried cleaning the port out with something like a paperclip or a sewing needle? I had the same problem as you and after doing that it works perfectly. It just had a load of fluff from my pocket stuck in it. I went through 3 cables before I realised this :/

Yeah I tried a sewing needle and an air duster. As far as I can tell it's dust free now but still having the same problem.
Might give it another go though and see what happens.

You sure it's out of Warranty? Certainly in the UK warranty is two years and the phone was released here October 2010 thus all UK phones are still well within warranty

Use a magnifying glass or equivalent, and carefully inspect the contacts inside the connector. You might need to clean them up by scraping them down a little. It is very possible they might have some debris stuck on them. If the port is very loose, take the phone apart and using needle nose pliers, squeeze the connector housing together a little to tighten it up. Had to do this on my TP2 port after a while(mini USB) and it worked like a charm.

I asked in a rapair shop and the guy there seemed to think it was likely a problem with the traces on the charging block. Although that was just his opinion from experience - he didn't actually look at it. I declined his offer to open it up and have a gander.
I wasn't aware it was a 2 year warranty. I might send it back then.
Has anyone had any experience with HTC's service centres?
Are they likely to also flash the phone with the latest firmware whilst they're at it? AFAIK (though do correct me if I'm wrong as admittedly I haven't checked in a while) there's no known way to gain root for the latest firmware.

I've used the UK service centre last month for my proximity sensor fault they flash it with the latest firmware for your carrier I rooted after that using ace hack kit hope that helps

I had the same problem few months back, but cleaning the port with dust cleaner now It's doing good.

I had the same problem, but when I clean carefully slowly with needle I solved the problem.

I assume they'd flash a Sim free model with stock manufacturer firmware? I hope so anyway.
So is the latest stock firmware rootable with aahk? Last I checked it wasn't.

I might try this before attempting the service centre then.
Did you just use a needle or did you use any kind of cleaning solution or air duster etc?

Legend Repair

Riding home today, I had my loved Legend in my jacket pocket and the zipper failed, letting the phone come out and skip down the road at 70+mph. Luckily, my parents were following me on four wheels and noticed. By the time they got my attention and we made it back, we couldn't find the phone at all. Using my Mom's phone I jumped on mylookout and made it scream. After finding it, the results literally almost made me cry.
After only two weeks of owning the most perfect fitting phone I've ever had, I now have this:
(56k/mobile warning)
https:// dl. dropbox .com/u/6609249/DSC_0869.jpg
Any one have any ideas as to where I can get it repaired? I obviously get calling HTC but I wanted to see if there were any other recommended options available.
I don't want to be pessimistic but I wouldn't be surprised if the cost of a new screen+chassis+labor is more than the cost of a replacement.
I had a very similar problem with my Legend. HTC will repair it for 270 euros..

As of today, that'd be 341.22 USD. Purchase price was more around 500 through myworldphone so l have some figuring out to do. Guess it's time to start posting some stuff up on craigslist.. I *MUST* have this phone back, new or repaired.
I will say about the quality of the phone that it still operates just fine as the music unpaused when I hit the optical and I've been hearing notification/alarm sounds, if I could only find a way to control it through PC. I've tried screencast but can't get the phone to be recognized through USB (I'm assuming doubletwist is autoenabling the USB drive mode, not allowing the phone to switch to "sync" and I sure as hell can't do it)
Any ideas there?
I find it quite amusing that the phone is still in one piece. It is truly a sturdy build, 99% of all phones on the market would probably be separated into a zillion small, small pieces after taking that kind of hit.
Still i shame though. The picture made me shiver at first glance.
OMG...i feel freakin sorry for you dude will try and help you...google...here i go!
ok, i could find you the digitizer...

or here...

will try to find the chassis and the buttons.
I feel sorry too man, I love the phone because its one of the best build phones I cant get a scratch on the screen!

I ended up ordering another off of Amazon after taking mine apart to analyze the damage. Previous posters were correct, it would cost just as must to order a new so friend took care of me and got me another.
Interesting part is that (I'm assuming this) the first phone (also from Amazon) seemed to be from Europe, as the default language was UK English or whatever. It also came with a black A/C adapter plug.
The second phone came in with "CN Thai" as the default language, ultimately causing me to just give up changing it and root the phone. Anyway, that phone came with a *white* A/C adapter, no english defaults, Java and one other app starting with a P that was *not* on the first phone.
I wonder just how many out-of-the-box ROMs there are for "unbranded" phones...
Check your ROM version, and post it here.that is an asian version for sure...
Just root your phone and flash the wwe rooted rom.

Broken USB connectors User List

hey guys we (me n rendeiro2005) are working on a project to try n help out users get back to stock settings, especially those with broken USB connectors and who are stuck with a particular baseband...
so if u are one such user please put up a post/reply here with the current baseband u have on ur device and whether it is X10i or X10a...
if u are not sure how to determine this read HERE
i would like to remind u all that the project is still work-in-progress and may or may not work 100%... we are trying our best to make it as clean as possible...
we've spoken but ill post again to get the ball rollling.
here are my details again just for reference.
Hey guys!
My USB connector ist broken.
I am able to charge my device, but its a bit strange.
Via Xrecovery i had the possibility to flash the backup of my mate's stock ROM with root.
After restoring with xrecovery, there was no more xcrecovery menue at booting.
I thought, with unrooting (Z4root) i get rid of the superuser.apk and root.
The problem is, now my X10i is unrooted, but the superuser.apk stayed.
Without my USB connector, there is no possibility to root my device again and delete that superuser.apk.
I only need an updated Rooting .APK, which roots my device with psneuter exploit.
It would be great if somebody can help me with this problem .
Device Details:
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i
Firmware-Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband-Version: 2.1.54
Kernel-Version: 2.6.29 [email protected]#1
Build-Number 2.1.A.0.435

wow!!! thats amazing... @some places the service centers dont replace the device but just repair the "motherboard" and then send it to the user... so they might check if the original OS was tampered with... like root/busybox/custom rom/etc... all of which btw VOID warranty...
Then i guess i'm lucky they gave me a new one good luck for all the others with broken usb.

Mine too..
I also broke my USB, infact I was neither able to charge or do USB....
I gave my phone as it is with custom ROM and SE guys gave me replaced motherboard with new IMEI #.
Good luck guys...
I sent mine in for repair nearly a month ago, I called them up to see where my phone is and apparently the motherboards are 'very delayed' and it will be atleast another three weeks before the parts arrive at the service center
I had broken USB (not charging or anything) with root, JIT, Titanium etc and most of the sony apps removed and they just replaced the motherboard and sent it back within a week. No questions asked
Mines broke up about 4 months ago. I gave it for the reparation to the two shops, but non of them helped me. I bought that phone on a internet auction without gwarancy, so I'm probably fu*ked up.
My USB connector is also broken and my phone is currently at a Sony Rapair center in Holland.
On Dutch forums i hear more peaple complaining about broken usb connectors.
The first day i had the phone in my hands i allready was thinking the connector is going to braek inside because it was so difficult to put the usb connector in.
And now it is broken. At first my phone battery drained from 100% to 40 in only a few hours without doing anything. After that it did not charge more than 40% after a whole night in the charger. And after two weeks it was not even possible to charge my phone aymore.
Now i am hoping to get my phone back soon. It is allready three weaks at the repair center. Last time i send an sony for a repair it was fixen within two weeks. Most peaple are getting new phone or refubished ones. I am still hoping to get an new one...
I had an X10i.
Same problem with my X10 after upgrade CM7 last week.
I bought it last july.
My USB connector seems to be normal but the battery didn't charge and i couldn't do anything with SEUS.
Yesterday, I sent it to SE repair center but i completely formated it with xrecovery in case...

ok let me tell u a something... setcpu will just send throttling commands to ur cpu... even if u dont use SetCPU/any other app the CPU by default will keep throttling between frequencies so that the user gets a good balance between performance + battery saving... so when u use setcpu it just send commands to cpu which tell it to avoid certain frequencies...
anyways...
the usb connector issue is related the way the usb connector is connected to the motherboard"/PCB of the x10... hence it has got nothing to do with wht software u use...
My usb port is broken n my phone is out of warranty due to liquid damage bt sum hw i manage to charge my phone by figgling my usb cord ( hv to set the cord in a certain position to get it charge) .. one thing i hv noticed is that when i connect my phone with blackberry's cable, my phone charges better than my stock cable ( i hv two stock cable, bth of dem r proper) ...act i hv a loosen usb port which is attachd to the motherboard. [Q] USB Port

My big bulky phone with the big bulky extended battery dropped to the floor as I got up from my chair, not realising that the usb cord had decided to entangle me. Next thing I know, my precious hd2 is lying on the floor, screen faced down, and the usb cord "ripped".
Everything seemed to be working fine, but when I tried plugging it into my dock, it wouldn't charge, so I tried holding it at angles - it worked, but whenever i let go, it would stop charging.
Does anyone know how to fix this without having to take the whole thing apart?
Sorry friend but you will have to take the phone apart to fix this problem. Might even have to replacecthe mainbosrd as the USB port is attachedcto the mainboard and can not be replaced seperately.

ty, but I'm worried that it'll get worse in the long term (long being anything over a couple of days), ie. completely stop working, and data transfer? I'd have to use wireless adb to do transferring.

I looked at the warranty terms and conditions, and it says that anything that has to do with the usb port area will not be considered as being part of the warranty, and I don't have the receipt because I got it 2nd hand. :'(
it could be fixed, but the port must be resoldered to the motherboard. In case some circuit tracks were broken in the incident, they will have to be remade, a good service center could handle it.
Most of them aren't too fond of using real electronic measurements and algorithms in order to track corresponding usb port pins to various points on the motherboard but it's not impossible. If my hd2 would have been damaged in this way i won't hesitate to crack it open and get my hands dirty
If I wanted to, how much do you think I'd be able to sell it for? Thinking of selling it, and mybe getting a used tmous, if I can afford it.
I've managed to find some tmous on sale, so, what do you guys reckon I could sell mine for?
When I broke my first LEO512 by thinking I could repair it, I took the individual components (Case, chassis, motherboard) out and sold them on ebay. I got about £119 in total for it all
You could always sell it for full price and let the buyer find out themselves what's wrong with it.

Do you mean an earpiece? If you do, this is a rather frequent issue. A spare part can be found on ebay (~15$). My phone had the same issue, I fixed it by myself
I had this issue as well. and none of the "things to try worked" in my case it was surely hardware. Luckly it was just 50 weeks young... (down to the wire) But called AT&T and they had me do a hard reset and said "yep it's broke" and put one on the way. Since during the unlocking process there is a physical change to the phone you can't undo it. However, there's a few threads on what to do before sending your other one back. / Basically it's wipe wipe wipe and install the fruitcakes. Though it doesn't "re-lock" your phone, it no longer says "unlocked" when you first turn it on. And I think they are to busy to go much past that if even that far...
In my case they said i'd only get a phone, no battery or back and would have to use my own. (no issues there) but they ended sending me everything. So not going to argue with a fresh battery.
Good luck!

My headphone port has stopped working too, I was hoping that that was due to a bad flash or something.

I had this problem and it turned out to be a small piece of lint at the bottom of the headphone jack. A little safety pin removed it and works flawless now.
OP, it is most likely a piece of lint or other debris in the hole, preventing a proper connection.
Try seeing if you can extract anything using a toothpick or something similar.
I have seen this exact scenario before.
I have the same problem but upon analysis I think that I don't have anything stuck in there.
When I peered into the socket it seemed fine, golden sides and some grey (metallic?) thing at the base.

My bad. I had an abundant account of lint. My headphones are working fine now.

Mine stopped working last week. I picked up one of those little bushy tooth floss picks, dipped it in a little rubbing alcohol and brushed away. Works perfectly now, just had debris built up on the contacts.

[Help] Replace USB port on N910C

Heya,
It seems like my usb connector is busted (or the entire daughterboard. i'm not sure) but I'm wondering if anyone has had experience replacing just the connector?
The phone still charges via usb, but when i plug it in, it says that the USB device has malfunctioned and it won't connect to the computer. I don't know if this is a daughterboard failure or just a port failure.
i'm hoping to find a way to replace the part without having to remove the screen if it is even remotely possible..
any advice?
Thanks
It looks like you need to remove the screen to replace the USB port. The part is probably quite inexpensive and unless your soldering is extremely good then I'd just replace the whole thing. I did it in my Note 3, that was easy, but never done it on my Note 4.
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+Note+4+Micro-USB+Port+Daughterboard+Replacement/35006
yeah, my biggest worry is that if i have it done by someone, they would crack the screen and a $65 repair will turn into a $300 repair....
Device modified in any way? Knox tripped?.....If not then (in the EU at least) Samsung provides a 2 year warranty......
It *could* be argued that the usb port should be expected to last for the full 2 years at least......
Check your paperwork/warranty card and try for warranty repair.

So did you get it repaired already? I have exactly same problem on my N910C. Tried different cables, different pc, factory reset, reinstall driver and other possible fixes that I can find on the net but still can't get it recognized on pc. I sent the phone to some repair shop to replace the usb board but the outcome is still the same.
I've bought the phone as a used unit and straightaway updated it OTA to Marshmallow. It is possible that I got a bad firmware?

I've bought the phone as a used unit and straightaway updated it OTA to Marshmallow. It is possible that I got a bad firmware?

unfortunately not yet. I'm still waiting for the part to arrive.
I might pay someone to do it for me, but other than that, i'll have to just try my luck.
I don't know about firmware because my issue cropped up randomly and I've been on this rom for over 3 months. so i think it's more of a port or board failure.
One thing *might* come in to play with the replacement......
On both the S2 and the S5, there were/are several versions of the board for each device.....none of them are interchangeable.
If Samsung follows previous form, this may well be the case for the Note as well.

yup! indeed that was what was holding me up. I have the N910C and no repair shop in the US has that board, so i have to order it from China....

But....If it follows the Samsung pattern, there will be more than one version of that board for the N910C......
Going back as far as my experience with the S2, my device was the international variant, and i discovered that just for that one device, there were 4 different versions of the board.
They were....
REV1.2, REV2.2, REV2.3 and REV2.4....
I had to get the matching version otherwise it led to problems like reduced/loss of signal, otg failure, data transfer failure......The list went on and on....

oh if you're talking that specific, then no there's no problems that I know of about specific revisions.
If there was it would be all over ebay with different revisions of the boards.

Um....done a little ebay research and for the F variant, I've seen 4 different revisions (so far)........
0.6, 0.8, 0.9 & 1.8
I think getting the right one is gonna be critical if, as I said before, it's the same 'pattern' as with previous devices.....

I looked up the N910C variant and there's no revision.
and looking up the F variant.. I don't see any revisions as you said either: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...+usb+board.TRS0&_nkw=n910f+usb+board&_sacat=0
I went into a random selection of listings and zoomed in on the images.....
The printing on the black ribbon cable is where I saw the revision information....
