[Q] Sudden Death - please help! How to fix? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My SM-N90005, was rooted on 4.3.3 (polish fw) from day 1 and worked perfectly. No glitches, no problems (except an externalSD memory write problem).
This night it died while under charge, for no reason. On forums I read it's called Sudden Death Syndrome and it's quite common to Note 3 but I could not find a fix exceppt to ship it back to Samsung for a replacement. I read of fixes for Note 2 and S3 etc but not for my model.
Has anyone found a fix for the Note 3 SM-n9005 SDS?
Thanks in advance for any help.

This doesn't match. Android 4.3 never had any limitations regarding writing to external SD card.
Are you sure, that you have the SDS? From what I have heard/seen, this was fixed on Note 2 by software updates and hasn't occurred on Note 3.

My mistake. It is 4.4.3
I am not sure that it is an SDS, I am sure that it's dead!

Where did you get 4.4.3 from already?
What happens when you try to boot up the phone? I need details.

First of all thanks for helping.
It is an official polish 4.4.3 downlaoded from Samobile and flashed using Odin
I cannot boot the phone.
It is completely dead.
No download mode. No charging light. Nothing at all. completely dead.

I can't find such firmware, nor have I seen any 4.4.3 being released to any Samsung phone at all (4.4.3 was released only short time ago, unrealistlic that Samsung phones would have update so quickly).

Sorry. I was right first time. It have official 4.3.3 (not 4.4.3)
I had ExtSD card memory problems you can find my posts everywhere (username: ascanio1)
Anyway, my problem has nothing to do with ExtSD card memory problems as those were long fixed (in Fenruary) and everything worked perfectly since.

I have terrible memory! Sorry!
Firmware was 4.4.2
Not 4.3.3
Not 4.4.3

When did the Note 3 ever get SDS? I heard they were fixed on Note 2's 4.2.2 firmware. (My phone never had SDS
BUT if what u say is true and your phone has SDS (which is unlikely), your only hope is Samsung service centre (if u still have warranty, that it) or JTAG (I think it works)

Yes I have warranty but Samsung HK are stupid as capibara! They refuse courier delivery paid by me. They expect me to fly from Japan to HK for "personal delivery" which is not mentioned anywhere in the warranty... thinking of asking my comsumer rights lawyer friend to handle this warranty refusal.

Personal delivery? That's plain stupid. You should probably ask your friend to sue Samsung HK lol.
That's (probably) the JTAG I was talking about.
Singapore? Just a few words. Convenient. Hot. Expensive (?). Safe. If u don't mind expensive stuff (Singapore has been rated at the most expensive country to live in lol), I would say come to Singapore.
EDIT: Having hols in China right now so... yea. (China y u ban Google )
P.S. phones bought in Singapore are (almost) never carrier locked, region locked or bootloader locked.

I had a really bad experience with a HK Note 3 SM-N9005 bought from imobilePhonex: I found out that it was not HK or International Model as claimed and that the warranty was only valid in some middle eastern country... the retailer asked me 300US$ to handle the warranty... DOUH ?!?!?! what warranty is it if I have to pay 3 big ones?
Do you know of any good or trust worthy online shops from Singapore where to buy phones from?

My phone died: absolutely no signs of life, no reboot, no charging light, nothing at all!
I thught that it was the SDS but I then realized that it might be the battery and so I just bought a new one. To my great surprise, the phone does not charge the battery. When I bought the battery it was at 46% charge and after 8 hours of charging the new battery was down to 41% charge!!!
If I try to charge the batttery when the phone is switched off, no red light appears but the phone vibrates intermittently (every 5 seconds) and keeps doing this until I disconnect the charger.
If I try to charge the phone when it is switched on, the charging Symbol inside the battery icon appears and also the red light is on...
But in both cases the battery does not get charged! I tried 3 different battery chargers (original Samsung) and 3 different cables.
I heard somewhere that there can be some software malfunction that causes this but I can't remember or find the right post...
Help!

Not charging the battery
Update: the phone will charge properly only if connected to my laptop USB ports but still won't charge from any wall charger.

Weird... If it's a software malfunction you'll have no chance of saving it since you can't get anything to start.

P.S. Try these steps to get into download mode.
No download mode?
If your phone won’t enter download mode, you can try three things:
A USB jig. Don’t pin your hopes on this, they rarely succeed in this scenario.
‘Jump starting’ – You might need someone else to give you a hand for this. Take the battery out of your phone and wait 30 seconds. Now, press the button combination to enter download mode, and with this combination still depressed, get someone to put the battery back in. Hopefully this will jolt your phone into download mode.
Take out the phone battery, and re-insert it, but don’t turn the phone on. Now, plug in the charger while holding the volume down button. Keep holding volume down till you enter download mode.
If your phone won’t enter download mode, and will do nothing but get hot when you attempt to do anything to it (charge it, turn it on), then your motherboard is in need of replacement.
Your options
I’ve seen a lot of people, when their Odin flash fails, either:
Give up. Not a good option.
Flash a .pit file. That should be used as an absolute last resort. There’s a lot to try before getting to that stage! If a flash of a .pit file fails in Odin, your phone is well and truly unrecoverable, and you will need a motherboard (MB) replacement.
Send their phone to a service centre. That costs money (& you’re without a phone for a week or so).

Flash a new ROM? If it's a software malfunction only a new ROM can solve your issue. And a .pit file would be useless here.

101 Seemingly dead! :(

mine has done this a couple of times now since i bought it new in december. it always seems to be when it gets a bit "too" empty it doesn't like turning on anymore even though I have it charging etc. always i've been able to recover from it by doing some mixture of charging/powering on etc.
last night i came to my 101 and it seemed to have suffered the same fate.... so did the usual tricks but it isnt waking. the light is coming on and turns off after holding it down for 7 secs but i see nothing on the screen. last time i checked it a couple of days ago it had about 60% battery left. Is there any way of determining if it is truly dead or if the screen is dead (plugged into usb but not getting any of the usual beep bop noises, but i think from memory you had to select to use it as storage device within android which i obviously cant do)
So now i'm crapping myself since I am totally at a loss as to what i can do. its never been opened etc but I installed the dev rom. I cant honestly think that Archos could possibly put ANY hardware issue down to the fact you had a dev rom installed (bought from currys, uk if it makes any difference... no doubt they have no stock to replace so most likely will say that they will have to return to archos)
Any advice much appreciated
thanks
To reset the Tablet you have to press way longer then 7 Seconds.
It states 10 but sometimes it needs 20.
After that you have to wait 10 seconds and then shortpress the powerbutton.
7/10/20 secs all do the same and the light turns off after about 7 seconds. no matter how long i leave it whether its plugged in or not nothing happens other than the light coming back on
currys have just told me that they have to inform users to deal directly with archos
just called them and they've given me an RMA number. still scared about the whole warranty/dev rom thing though (didnt have the nerve to mention it)

Dis you tried to use a flashlight to see is there something on screen (in case of the backlight is OFF/DEAD).

Well, they are pretty clear that if you install SDE or any other type of root solution you void the warranty. So you might expect a charge for the service.
what is with the good old "let the tablet warm up (20-25 degrees celsius), connect it with usb to the pc and at last connect the charger to the tablet"-trick?
or was it first charger then usb? i can't remember but i had this with my A70, too...

no joy from that too
on a more positive note, i can actually get the device seen over usb (think pc must have been playing up earlier too.. not my day today!)
detects it as a 101it and mounts both drives although windows is saying that neither are formatted (odd). cannot see anything on the display so doesnt seem to be the backlight thats died. looks like the whole screen has.
has anyone else here had any prior experience with SDE archos devices and warranty? I mean, really.. they'd be pushing it to expect people to believe that a display would die because of someone installing some unsupported software?!
unit sent off on friday.
guess noone here has had a faulty SDE/rooted unit that they needed to return to archos then. odd

People throw the "voids your warranty" thing around way toooo much. Let me be clear, modding your device CANNOT void a entire warranty. If I send my full rooted EVO in because of a faulty LCD, they HAVE to fix it or I can sue them. Theres something called the magnuson moss warranty act, which in a nut shell states that, what you did has to have caused the problem. Did rooting your device break it? Mostly likely not because it doesn't mess w/ the boot loader. If they give you crap about rooting or modding ask them if your mod directly contributed to the unit failing. If they say no but still give you crap throw the magnuson moss warranty act at them.
I see this all the time w/ cars, I used to be big on 8thcivic.com when I had my 07 Civic Si. People would bring their cars in w/ say, a modded computer or exhaust w/ a unrelated problem like transmission or something. If they gave them crap, the second they mentioned the magnuson moss act they shut up and fixed the problem. For the manufacturer its a lot cheaper to deny you then fix you. Archos seems like a friendly company, I'd feel confident sending in my rooted device w/ a bad screen.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act sounds all well and good but its an american "act" and most likely not relevant to Archos being a french company (and me being in the UK).
it may be the reason that I have heard people in the states being offered repairs (at a cost... $200 for a screen or something i think i read)
I have the same problem but it disappeared when I use UrukDroid 0.7 or2.1.08

a) dont think its the same problem as my 101 is DEAD.
2) it must be a coincidence for you then since I dont see how the battery/charging system of a device could be changed in a firmware update (had the bizarre issue with most flavours of firmware. by the time it is dead and needs resussitating it is out of the remit of firmware.
Mine is also dead, i suspect a power issue as the green LED will stay on while plugged in but will never blink to indicate complete charge and it won't turn on.... needless to say I am waiting to hear back from Archos (4 weeks now) and also waiting for the Asus Transformer to come out.

SGS2 Sudden Death Cases

Hi All,
My I9100 just died.
How did it die? had an app running. got the screen to sleep (pressed the power button), got back and couldn't turn it on.
Now another friend had the same thing happen to him a month ago.
This isn't a classic brick that happens while wiping/flashing/etc...
I really wonder if there are more cases of SGS2 bricking without any "proper" reason after a ~1year usage...
My friend also sent it to be fixed by JTAG/JIG without any success...
It's unreasonable for a "premium" device to die after a year of usage. (eg. My HTC/Google N1 is still being used by my brother just fine...)
ANYONE HAVING A SIMILAR SITUATION I'D BE GLAD OF YOU PM ME.
Update as of 24/11/12 - Device been repaired by Samsung

Yup, had a completely unexplained case of "sudden death" back in May, just before I got my S3. Fried main board apparently - repaired under warranty. Now the same thing's happened to my S3. Not impressed!

Same thing, also in may. I clicked on an app to open it, screen went white, waited few minutes then restarted it, and that was it. Recovery was dead, it was stuck at Samsung logo, only thing working was download mode, but NAND was corrupted - unflashable. Samsung replaced motherboard.

No overclocking, on demand profile under CM10 as always.
Phone wasn't hot or anything. just decided to sleep and never wake up ...
I'm trying to see a pattern because this was my ONLY phone and paying ~450-600$ for a phone just to have it for a year is unacceptable.
Had some phones in my life but none just got "motherboard" dead...
If this is a faulty issue with Samsung I'd like to know it rather than saying... Arghh, my luck, lost few hundred bucks...

You guys should try to give more info other than "ahhh my phone is dead"
Rom and kernel info, also what you were doing before it died. Did you reset, flash a Rom, wipe anything, delete anything, things like that.

What info you want?
Device didn't get any eMMC "unsafe" usage or kernel?
Device worked flawless until the point it died without any difference of usage?
During verifying its death device has been:
- Tried all button combinations
- Tried different batteries
- Tried different chargers / charging for a while.
- Tried leaving device with/without battery for hours/days.
- Tried jig
- Disassembled
Trust me people who's phone will die won't immediately say their phone died without trying ALL options.
And as mentioned by many here it just happend to them even with pure stock non-rooted. no wipe no nothing...

I'm afraid components are designed to wear out after a few years ... sometimes they just do it prematurely without warning!
Nobody want to make a unbreakable phone with a expected live span of 10-15 years even it's perfectly possible. The companies need us to buy new hardware every second or third year, and I think they design quality to meet that requirement.
When Norway introduced 5 year warranty for mobiles ... all producers of mobiles **** in there pants! :good:
The consumer protection laws are all in accordance with various EU directives regarding consumer
rights. These consumer rights should therefore not differ significantly from the consumer protection
laws and regulations in other EU/EEA countries. One notable difference, however, is the 5-year
warranty period under the Norwegian Consumer Purchase Act which applies to all goods made for a
lifetime significantly longer than 2 years. The lifetime of products must be assessed individually.
However, most consumer electronics, including mobile phones, are covered by the 5-year warranty
period. For products with a shorter expected lifetime, a warranty period of 2 years applies, similar
to other European jurisdictions.

All is true. as there were in back in the 70-80s 10years lifespan blobs for east germany...
Still,
My original iPhone 2G had a battery wear-out and died during my failed operation of replacing its battery (after 3years of use!) - except of that it was fine.
My Nexus One is still working for my brother. except the bad Power button design that got broken (again about 7monthers after I sent it to fix before giving it to my brother).
My GF's iPhone 4 is STILL a great device. (no Apple vs Oranges pls as this software isn't the point of this entire thread!).
There is wear out of electronics but unlike mechanical parts (buttons) or liquid parts (batteries), electronics DOES survive years.
If you'd like me to send you Pentium 4 CPUs or even Pentium-Ms still fully functional I'll be glad to show you they're fully functional.
Progress isn't about dying hardware it's more of the human urge to replace (eg. Samsung won't give the SGS2 any version past 4.1 or I want OpenGL 4.0 which will be supported only on futrue chip XXX... or LTE or whatever).
I don't ask Samsung to provide open-source (even though they imho provide easier ways for devs but that's NOT THE SUBJECT)
I ask a single simple thing - RELIABILITY. as a person with a normal payroll spending ~500$ for a device to be working for me for a year isn't acceptable. sorry. I'm might be unlucky but for my 2006 MacBook (that's still running) Apple acknowledged ALL problems and provide additional warranty. for other 15" MBPs with nVidia's issue they also replaced boards...
Summary -
No one expecting my phone to be working for 15 years. but yes I expect my devices not to commit suicide after a year and a month...
(Mainboard IS the phone!)

Sounds like a power surge fried the battery or motherboard.
This is why we invented surge protectors...
Today phone return to Austria in service so what they do give new phone or replace something???
was told today in my local Samsung Service Centre that the 'first batch' of N9005s are seeing motherboard failures. It (I assume the motherboard) was replaced no questions asked..

No. But it happens with note 3. You can try to replace battery but if you can just return.

Maybe there is a solution. Search forums.
It is covered if you bought from a shop? Where did you buy from?

3 Beeps on previous galaxies usually meant over heating. Sounds like a hardware fault not software. Return it if you can. Or use a different battery, battery might be damaged.
You should be able to go through Samsung directly to have it replaced.

I bought it from Egypt and I bought it with a cheaper price without warranty,so i don't think it is covered.

Just remove battery an check voltage you shold have 3.7 volts or more if is below 3.3 V you need to charge the battery somehow. Leve your phone with no battery for a hour or two. Put back your battery and try to boot your phone. It did happen to me and after many attempts was start working again.

Note 4 completly dead

My snapdragon phone started acting weird today. Was slow and locked up for many minutes doing just simple tasks.
Took a backup of the phone and ran a factory reset.
The phone was fast and smooth after this and i was satisfied. But then i did a reboot, and the phone never booted again.
It does not even charge. Just dead.
Anyone else had this issue? Had the phone since release, and it has never been rooted or anything that would break warranty, so i will contact the place i bought it from.
But can this might be battery related? In that case it would be much easier for me to get a new battery.
Have tried to charge it for a while without any result. Does not seem to draw any power either as the charger is cold..
but when i plug it in the pc, windows detects something for about 2 seconds, but claims it's unrecognizable...
Rocking my Nexus 4 now, smooth phone with android 6.0, but camera and battery sucks bigtime... I want my note back..
I have exact same problem. But my phone was rooted and service center told me my warranty is void. They told me the mainboard is bad and need to be replaced. It will cost about half of the new phone price...
Try pressing "Vol +" + "Vol -" + "Lock" + "Start" buttons for a few seconds
Pd: wrong section, this should go on troubleshouting

Take it to a different store from your carrier and this time don't tell them its been rooted. Tell them it hasn't been if they ask and they should replace it.
Have tried every combination possible with holding in buttons. No sign of life.. Good thing i got a backup while it was still "working"
I have had many plans to root the device and get in some custom ROM but i have been satisfied with stock and never found the time to do it, and i am happy for that now
Sorry for posting in the wrong place. Maby an admin can move this post?
Welcome to the party, almost the same thing happened to me except it failed to do a factory reset.

This has been checked and it's not the problem. But thanks for suggestion.
If i get a new Note 4 on warranty i will probably sell it and get a Nexus phone, or install an clean ROM right away. Stock android is so much smoother than touchwiz.

Yeah, i don't know why the note 4s hard brick them selfs like that, must be a bug/glitch.
Seems like the store i bought it from has 2 years warranty. But in Norway we anyway have a 5 year "mini warranty" on electronics that is decided by law. So if the problem is not caused by mistreatment or water damage you should get it fixed for free within 5 years anyway.
Motherboard was faulty (as suspected)
Try to re-install a stock firmware (latest version) from sammobile with odin. This is the fast mode to revover your phone .
