Hey,
I have a Motorola Nexus 6 and I'm thinking to change it with a Mate 8. Can you please let me know if is worth the upgrade, or i'm better with then Nexus?
Thanks!

Camera / sound / custom roms / OS updates / love for stock Android: keep the Nexus.
Screen size / battery life / possibly performance but won't differ much: buy the Mate 8.

I have a custom ROM on my Nexus, so I don't care that much about updates .
Screen size - 6" have both
So the only upgrade will be in terms of battery and maybe performance....? It's seems to me that is not worth it so much....

The battery life and the fingerprint scanner are the advantages of the Mate 8. The build quality is great as well but that's about it.

Fingerprint scanner on the rear is, imho, completely useless. I usually leave the phone on my desk and simply double (well, triple) tap to wake it. Picking it up every time is incredibly cumbersome.
Battery life is great. Camera, in low light, is abysmal and with the newer 32x builds not even functioning properly anymore (stock camera that is)

Nexus 6 is a heep compared to the mate 8. But, development is much better for the nexus. Personally, I have had both and went with the mate 8. The nexus is way too slow with bad battery life and no fingerprint sensor. Mate 8 is awesome.

Nice to have an opinion from someone who had both phones. Personally it's seems a bit harsh to say about a 2 year old phone that is slower.... even if it's true, I don't believe that in the way we use the phones we can actually see the difference, at least not between this 2 phones. But if you say so I believe you.
Second I will love a better battery that will last me for 2 days with moderate use. And the fingerprint scanner is a plus. But beside this...I really don't see any another improvements to spend other money to make this change . Don't get me wrong, I love the design of the Mate 8 but I would love a phone with that design and battery and with stock android.
Still judging whether to change it or not ...

In my opinion the Nexus 6 was a bit of a failure. Camera is probably better on the Mate 8 and definitely battery life. Otherwise buy a Nexus 6P instead it would be a good updrade in every way.

how is the find 5

just out of curiosity, how is the find 5 for a daily driver? im using the nexus 4 but looking around. any input would be great.
still disappointed about the battery life and performance so far (can be improved of course, as more changes are made to the Cm10.1 code base)
stock ROM is kinda crappy if you've used CM/AOKP/other ROMs
it's a good device hardware wise...
if you don't mind having a little less battery life compared to nexus, then sure....
you'll have the same drawbacks to nexus(non-removable battery, no microSD slot) with a few plus (larger screen / resolution, better camera)
i guess im a light user because i get great battery life for my expectations. im always on WIFI so i guess thats a plus
im currently on cm10.1 and love it.
love when people ask me what kind of phone it is
thanks for the input guys, seems like ill be sticking with my n4 until the next nexus comes.

I think you should try it
Here is my top 3 pro/cons:
1. Design and quality of build, the feel when you have it in hands.
2. Display, the best on the market IMHO
3. Oppo looks very open and tries to listen users, support here on XDA
1. Camera, poor software implementation on a top CMOS sensor, image suffer on autofocus and stability, bad results on low light.
2. Battery, unusual battery drain on standby.
3. Bad side of been open, they look very unorganised, what is fixed in one ROM gets unfixed in other, what is implemented in chinese version is not on international and viceversa...

Nexus 6P vs Mate 8

Im looking to upgrade from a Nexus 6 to either a 6P or Mate 8. I just found this phone this morning and looks interesting. What do you think of this phone vs the 6P? Thanks for your opinions.
I have both. I came from a nexus 6. They're both great phones. My only sadness with this phone is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. As much as I really hate that, I can't put this phone down. Battery life with heavy use I'm still putting down average 6-7 hours screen on time. The 6p is pretty solid of a phone too but I'll be giving it to my gf since the mate 8 serves more than enough of its purpose.
Hopefully one day maybe we get an aosp ROM

i would like an aosp/CM rom as well. my problem with my N6 is battery life. i heard the 6P is better and seems like this is even better than that. i have been reading on here about issues people have been having with the phone being in chinese and issues with notifications and such. guess i need to decide if the lack of aosp with the other issues will be something i can live with for now.
No problems with notification for me and no Chinese problems either. People probably bought a Chinese model and are complaining about Chinese being on it. Go figure. And also coming from a nexus 6 I only have up due to screen being broken and unable to repair it at the moment, this fits even better in hand than the nexus 6. Solid as hell. Like I said, my only complaint is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. So far I'm able to live with it. If it gets too much, I'll serve my nexus 6 back to the States for repair. Not necessary though considering the hell of an upgrade this phone is
well, most issues and complaints here actually arise because people are too lazy to read as for custom roms, the ball started rolling on that we already have twrp, unlocked bootloader, decrypted boot image and root capability. first dev is also already working on a custom rom, so im pretty optimistic for the near future
sure, development will never get as expansive as with the nexus 6P, but hey, its a nexus
u gotta decide whats important to you: mate 8 trumps everything concerning cpu performance (even upcoming s820 according to benches thus far) and battery life. if gpu performance is important to you though, the 6P is definitely more performant, although not massively due to the higher screen resolution vs. the mate 8.
another important point: screen vs body ratio! iphone 6s plus / nexus 6p / mate 8 are all the same size, give or take 1-2mm. difference being:
iphone 5.5 inch display
nexus 5.7 inch display
mate 8 friggin 6 inch display
coming from the nexus 6 ull be surprised to have such a "small" device sport the same screen size at way smaller dimensions
and i can say the screen is super sharp, has great colors and is briiiight as heck, everything u can want in a good screen
just my 2c on the matter...

Another 2 plus points for the Mate 8 that people don't give much importance but for me are relevant are the fm radio and sd card slot.
yes! i was pleasantly surprised to see the fm radio functionality
I have both and hands down the mate 8 is the winner. I got the mocha brown 64GB 4GB ram and it flies. Had notification issues with the Chinese Rom so I just converted to international and now no problems. I listen to a lot of music and this goes a lot louder and quality is much clearer. Camera seems good but I'll be testing it more over the next few days. 6p is going on eBay.

nexus 6p or honor 8

I'm aware if the differences obviously. Which would you choose now using T-Mobile. My main concern is cell reception. The 6p is flawless in that department
Personally, I would go with the Honor 8 as the Kirin 950 SOC is more stable than the Snapdragon 810 used in the Nexus 6P. But you honestly can't go wrong with either device.
Both phones can handle cell reception nicely.
But for future update, Nexus 6P, I can say at least 3 years from now, you can get M, N, O or P. Honor 8, probably stop at Android N.
Thanks for the info guys. Think I'm going to stick with my 6p. Nougat is pretty solid and has greatly improved speed of the device.

Honor 8 wont stop with Android N. It will go till Android O, as Honor provides update for its devices for 2 years.
Honor 4X which started its journey with Kitkat is now on Marshmallow. So definitely Huawei won't leave Honor 8 at least till Android O.
But everything can change, Google policy can change. Like they said Vulcan API support is necessary for Android N, they might ask for any other support for the next android iteration.
If you prefer on the looks of the mobile you can go for Honor 8. If you prefer to have one incremental software upgrade over the other, you can go for Nexus 6P.

Thanks a lot, gonna get it soon
I own both. After having microphone issues with the 6P (noise reduction issues, like a small but sizable percentage of 6P owners experience) I "side-graded" to the Honor 8.
My impressions are:
- Love the SD card slot and IR blaster (rarities nowadays)
- Love the look of the device (blue)
- Camera is quite good, but not as good as the 6P's
- Speaker is meh, adequate for podcasts while folding laundry or whatever, but not very good
--> Who listens to music on a phone's internal speaker though??
- Screen is decent but 6P's is better
- Size is almost exactly the same as an iPhone 6 (not Plus like the Nexus 6P)
But... EMUI just ... sucks. I'm extremely grateful to say that my life is good enough that phone software can seem like a big annoyance. It really is annoying though.
The latest thing - which is causing me to switch back to my 6P with a custom ROM to try to work around the microphone issue - is that with the latest Huawei update, now EVERY TIME you plug in or disconnect the charger, the phone throws up a MODAL DIALOG BOX! What??
I've dug in settings for at least half an hour and can't find any way to disable this unimaginably useless annoyance. Seriously, I can't believe the stunningly out-of-touch decision making that goes into EMUI, and so far the one update I've received has only made it worse. If CyanogenMod or something were available for the Honor 8 I would genuinely like the device, but EMUI is simply garbage. It's SO bad.
Then I have to take a deep breath and remember that I have a home, a family, and a job, and shouldn't sweat about something so unimportant.
EDIT: but seriously guys, EMUI suuuuucks SO BAD. Stay away.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Huawei Mate 10, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Huawei Mate 10 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Mini review
Camera: poor. Nearly every photo looks like an oil painting
Screen: lovely
Speakers: great but a tad boomy
Battery: on average I'm getting 6 hours after each charge which is great compared to my 3 on the Nexus 6p
Speed: no issues at all
---------- Post added at 09:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
Forgot to mention that the charging speed is incredibly quick
Camera: love it, in pro mode you can do whatever you want tho, and also shoots in RAW
Screen: good colors but i hate pentile grid, and usable for vr but 1080p or FHD+ is not enough
Speakers: good stereo effect when is on orizontal, but losses fidelity at max volumes
Battery: very good, similar to my old Mi MIX (4400mah)
Speed: Fast AF for real
Storage and Memory: not "PRO".....
6GB ram is good but other flagships have 8GB,
128GB storage is good too, but again, my old Mi MIX have 256GB.
Design: love it
USB-C: FULL support, you can plug whatever you want there, docs, hdmi, another phone, pendrives, mini fan, other charger, mouse, keyboard, name it. ( my Mi MIX dont support hdmi over USB-C for example)
Honestly I absolutely love this phone. I've got a Mate 10 pro BLA-L29 international on T-mobile.
Pros:
Battery. Check my post in the battery thread, fantastic. 8.5-9+ hours SOT with light-moderate usage, 6.5+ on the conservative side for heavy usage.
Screen is really pretty. Honestly the 18:9 OLED 1080p screen is super nice regardless of the normal mate 10 having a QHD panel. I'd say it is a very well built screen
Quick. The kirin 970 has been fast and haven't had any glitches or even odd stutters
Having oreo is great, and MIUI has been pretty swell in my experience. I've seen a lot of hate on it so I was a bit nervous, but honestly it just gives you a lot of different options in the settings I feel like. Personally as someone that likes to tinker with their device but doesnt feel like rooting, I like being able to tweak every aspect of the phone to the extent of the vast number settings.
Cons
Really the only one I can think of currently is software stuff. I hate not being able to expand notifications from the lockscreen and idk why it doesn't let you do that. Idk if it'd an oreo thing or a MIUI thing but I hope it gets fixed in an update because I'd hope that wasn't intentional.
Will add more as I think of them
Things I don't have enough credibility to critique :
Camera. I don't take a ton of photos apart from things like snapchat or the occasional normal photo of my pets, but in my usage the cameras have been great. I'm not going to say I'm am avid photographer though so I won't pretend I know more than I do with how good it is for someone more into professional photography
Coming from note 8. Actually usinf both as daily drivers and Huawei really have a loooong way to go
I am not talking cameras or battery but user experience, smoothness and UI. It's like comparing an iPhone with a 2015 Android phone
Hope this device is getting better with updates

it's truly a homerun. Sound out of the 3.5mm headphone jack is GREAT.

Yes I agree. Battery life. Camera maybe speakers
But I am talking about UI smoothness and user experience. Note 8 is much smoother in animation and the UI is much useful. As in the miniapps the apps windows. The applications are much better optimised for example TubeMate.
The default apps In general, calendar calc phone messenger files etc are much much better on Samsung
By the way where I live mate 10 pro is more expensive than note 8

Its for both mate
I have had my mate 10 for over a month now and to be honest I think my mate 9 is a better phone, I really don't think the front fingerprint sensor is anywhere near as good as the mate 9 rear one and the phone is just not as smooth to operate with random delays in apps opening or freezing.
Mate 10 pro has the best battery you can get right now in my opinion. The camera can take good photos. It is very fast and has plenty of ram. On the other hand it has bad video, bad audio and old fashioned ui.
Just tried the Emui desktop by connecting my M10PRO to a TV with a USBC-HDMI cable. It works quite well.
Nice to be able to watch Netflix on a hotel room TV directly from the phone.
Will try other out more apps/stuff on the desktop interface to see if it's useful for more than media.
I hope that Huawei will develop a system similar or similar to Knox ™ or Secure folder, since the Mate series is a direct competition to the Galaxy Note, which are 100% focused on work and also have a user focus with BYOD
Just got the Mate 10 Pro the day it hit Best Buy, a few day ago. Haven't bothered rooting yet because truthfully it doesn't need it.Im impressed with the overall quality.Extremely fast and stable. High 212k Antutu score. Thumbs up on this one.
mate 10 , very good camera , good battery , nice design , incredible fingerprint , very good price

Going to OnePlus 6? well good but isn't like the price difference as it was in the past, thinking of getting a nokia 7 plus to give my gf this phone, not that I have any issue with the phone, CarbonROM CR6.1(android 8.1) performs great but why not have twice the battery life if I can? ..plus the fact that my gf has a lenovo with a terrible mediatek cpu and only 8GB of storage - it's so slow

I think my next phone is google phone, I love the smooth on that which never find on any other phone even install AOSP on them. Only these phone can have that smoothess is Sony anh HTC but they dont have lastest and fastest android version and sercurity patch on their phone (U11 still stuck at 8.0 and Dec 2017 security patch). Even nokia phone power by android one is lag too. Now I only root to control battery charged level threshold to save battery life and increase volume step but in android P google increase volume step to 20 and thats fine to me, also accubattery can alert me when it charged to specific level so I think time to say goodbye to custom rom soon. You can see most active phone in stats lineage is old phone

I think to go for Oneplus 6 unless the Lenova Z5 releasing tomorrow is really a miracle.
If opt oneplus 6 I am confused which model - mirror or midnight ? , I read few articles on it but still unable to.I will use a case , but durability (both are glass though) and pure black is my thing , White one on the way but not for me.
Note : I have nexus 6 and Oneplus 1 - to know me.

Imagine Nokia 7 Plus with a more power efficient SoC and better performance than 1+1
I've changed my battery in 1+1 and replace it with Blade's ..easy mod if you have "hands"

Imagine Nokia 7 Plus with a non-unlockable bootloader...wait, don't.
I've been using the OPO since october 2014, and i'm very happy to announce that i'll move to the OP6. All i can say about the OPO is "what a great piece of technology", for four years i've never had a real issue with it or anything botherig me, and all of that thanks to this wonderful community of XDA. What can i say ,you've been keeping this phone alive so we don't have to change it each 1 or 2 years like other brand(i usually laugh at my friends changing their samsungs or HTCs or whatever) because it becomes laggy and buggy. Really what a phone to still perform as good as new in 2018 after 4 years, and i chose the OP6 in stead of other phones even if i found the S9 or the note8 at the same price with discounts just because of the community( despite the performance and the rest). After all they are only better than the OP6 in term of camera( that i don't use that much and the OP6 one is not bad after all) and the screen which i don't see the utility, because i prefer by faaar a usefull phone with a FHD screen than a laggy one after 2 years with QHD. Even if my phone is still good for another 1 year or more, i think it's time to switch, i will give it to my mother because i don't see the point of selling it( i prefer to put it in a drawer than to sell it for 100$ lool). And i prefer to choose this comunity because, unlike the other ones, this one is more active, and even when sometimes OP doesn't fix something, the community does.
I hope i've been usefull and helpful for some people these years and thank you aaallll for helping me when i needed help.
Even though i don't have the latest and greatest, My OPO with SultanROM is running good with only occasional hiccups. Waiting for some good offers to upgrade. OP6, Honor 10, Mi8, Discounted Pixel 2 XL in pipeline. If i wait too long till Pixel 3 get's released. Will move on to it. As of now, no pressure of upgrading at all.

Well I'm evaluating my options as my gf would need a new phone soon and I have a chance in getting something better(not that I'm not happy with 1+1 ..carbon rom makes me quite happy these days BUT why not have moaaaaar battery life? )
Xiaomi Mi 8 SE seems a great alternative BUT ...no B20 band support so it's a bust. Xiaomi Mi 8 is promissing but 6.21" display seems big and it's bigger than our phone although it has smaller bezels
Xiaomi Mi 8 SE with 5.88" and smaller dimensions would be amazing(SDM710) but that B20 band support is troublesome
..Still searching for anything that fit my needs while it won't exceed 300e mark
P.S. In order to achieve the best security if phone is lost, the bootloader should be locked - The coin always has two sides
