First steps with S7E - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi everyone ! I'm about to receive my gold gs7e, and i have a few questions for the profis out there !(this might interest beginnersmlike me )^^
First of, how do i subscribe to an insurance for the phone ? Since i paid full price for the phone(i couldn't get a bargain through my carrier), i really believe i need some kind of insurance . Does sammy provide anything like that ? I've browsed their website but didn't find anything except the usual warranty. According to you, carriers insurance are woth a try ?
Then, i will get a "naked" phone, does it mean it will be free of bloatware ?
I've read here and there that to get to grips with the phone it can be a good idea to hard reset it right from the start, before i save any data on it. What do you think?
What do you recommend to maximize battery performance and durability ? How can i take good care of the battery on the long run ? Should i charge it fully as soon as imget the phone ? Or is it better to let it dry out completely and then charge it to max ?
What other things are important to have a good start with the phone ??
I thank you in advance for your kind replies !:good:

Since you're mentioning "carrier," I'm guessing you're in the U.S. If that's right, you have a few options.
Carrier insurance: most expensive, but the only one that will cover loss or theft. Typically $13 a month or more, plus a $200 deductible if you need a replacement due to loss, theft or breakage. Only you can decide if that's important to you. I've never lost a phone, or had one stolen, so it's not important to me.
Samsung Protection Plan: $129 one time fee, $79 deductible for two years of coverage, up to 2 replacements per year. No loss or theft coverage, but coverage for broken screens, water damage, and electronics failures (after the 1 year warranty is up). I think this is what I'm going with: http://www.samsung.com/us/owners/protection-plus/
Square Trade: Monthly payments, but a lot cheaper than the carrier plans. A little cheaper or a little more expensive than Samsung's depending on how long a plan you get, and whether or not you actually need a replacement phone. Google Square Trade and you can see the options.
Those are the big three. There are a couple of other options mentioned here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge/646986-insurance-samsung-s7-edge.html , but I'd stay with the big companies that are known to provide reliable claims service. Cheap insurance isn't a good deal if the company isn't actually around to pay your claim.
Then, i will get a "naked" phone, does it mean it will be free of bloatware ?

Not sure what "naked" means. Where did you buy it, and what model (G935F, etc.) is it? If it's a carrier branded phone, it will have bloatware no matter where you bought it from (e.g., Best Buy or Amazon). If it's an unlocked international version, it will have Samsung's bloat, but not carrier bloat.
I've read here and there that to get to grips with the phone it can be a good idea to hard reset it right from the start, before i save any data on it. What do you think?

Won't hurt anything, but it probably isn't necessary. A factory reset simply restores it to the "new, out of the box" condition. Which is the same as what you'll have when you take it out of the box,
What do you recommend to maximize battery performance and durability ? How can i take good care of the battery on the long run ? Should i charge it fully as soon as imget the phone ? Or is it better to let it dry out completely and then charge it to max ?

Do NOT let the battery drain completely. That was good advice 10 years ago, when phones had NiCd batteries, but Lithium batteries do not like to be fully discharged. The best way to treat Li batteries, if you really want absolutely maximum longevity, is to maintain the charge between 25% and 75%. But for simplicity, just charge it to 100% when it needs it, and don't let it drop below 25% unless you have to.

Read the forums and articles here, and at other Android sites. You'll find lots of good information and tips.
Also, consider getting a case. This is a slippery phone, and the glass back is pretty fragile. I haven't put a case on any other phone, but decided to put one on this one. I wanted the beauty to show through, so I got this one from Spigen. It makes the phone easier to hold, more comfortable (for me) to hold, provides some protection against breaking, and minimizes fingerprints.

+1 on the Samsung protection plus. I can say from experience (as in this past week) I already had my Gold S7E replaced due to me dropping my phone at 4 feet taking pictures of my fiancé and puppy. In result, a crack screen. Anyways I don't have Samsung Protection plus prior, but bought it, got my claim approved, and the replacement was shipped next day. Keep in mind though, they will replace the phone with the same specs, so the color is not considered. My new replacement was black and they would not exchange it regardless of saying "I'll wait til you get the gold". In the end I sent my damaged phone and had my carrier trade the black for a gold .
So, to answer your question. Samsung protection plus is awesome (assurant is their insurance) to an extent. And a case is a need! Phone pretty much slipped out of my hand when I dropped the phone.
On a side note, I'm unsure which carrier you're with but At&t (on-line) took care of my replacement at no charge (in-store reps weren't able to fulfill my request, PR at leasty local branch was misinformed).
To top it off, this is Day 1 with my new replaced Gold phone.

First of, i want to thank you guys for answering my questions ! I appreciate it a ton !
As you both asked,i'm in france and i bought a naked phone online. My service provider here is Orange. Btw, what's the difference between carrier and service provider ?
I would like to ask also if the samsung insurance covers all repair costs ? I mean, i read somewhere that it just help reducing the bill but for instance, a broken screen will still cost about 200bucks to repair !
As for the battery , do i need to go through any calibration process ? I trust everything you told me, but i remember reading somewhere on this site that new phones might need to be calibrated battery wise ? Like, the software may not be fully aware of the battery or sth like that ? This leads me to ask if every piece of hardware maufactured is somehow tested individually before it ships ?
And concerning a protection for the phone i'll go with the silver clear view cover! It really looks stunning even if i'm aware in case of a drop it may open and expose the screen... I also already received my tempered glass ! Hopeflly both will fit together !

I'm thinking that naked has a different meaning here than what you're trying to say. But if you mean it wasn't branded from Orange or another service provider, then I think the answer is that it will still have Samsung's bloat, but not any service provider installed apps. Oh, service provider and carrier amount to the same thing. Here in the U.S. we call Verizon, Sprint, etc. carriers. You'd call them service providers.

I don't know what Samsung's (or anyone else's) insurance plans cover in France. They seem to vary a lot. Here in the U.S, there's a "deductible" of $79 for any repair of replacement. That means no matter what it costs for Samsung to repair or replace your phone, you only pay $79. I don't even know if Samsung offers this plan in France, or what it's terms are if they do. Probably best to go to the Samsung France web site and see if you can find something.

No, you don't. The battery has circuitry in it that works with the phone to keep track of battery status. Just charge it up and use it. There may be some truth that the phone "learns" about the battery during the first few charges, (I don't think so, though), but there's nothing special you need to do.

To everyone else,
If any of you are looking to deal with this person, PLEASE remember to either deal locally. If you cannot, make sure you get his actual phone number (test the number), etc etc. If you're paying via paypal because you cannot pay locally, please make sure HE is verified.
I cannot stress this enough. I'm a victim to people who carry the same story of "insurance won't cover everything", "I need the money by X date or the lenders are going to come after me", etc. There are people who will play with your sympathy and pity, please be wary of those people.
And most importantly, if you're paying via Paypal, send the money on a weekday. If the person doesn't ship the item out within the day itself, cancel your payment on the same day itself. If this person cannot commit to shipping on the same day itself, look elsewhere (.e.g. if you guys chat about the whole procedure and stuff during the weekend, then only pay on Monday when the seller can also ship on the same day itself).
Always remember, if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is. (Also, trust your gut. Don't try and over-rationalize over your gut-instincts. If something feels off, call it off immediately. More than often, you'd be surprised how accurate your gut-instincts were).
I speak entirely out of experience as to how I was ripped out of my 650 USD a month or so ago. Being a student, this really, really hurt me because I took the time to save for the phone and it's not like $$$ grows on a tree or something.
@Topic Creator: I'm not here to tell you that you're a liar, I'm only here to give other people a few helpful advice, so please don't take my intentions as trying to put you down. There's no way I can verify what you're telling me as true, but if your wife is really sick, I can only tell you that I hope she gets better.
Good luck to everyone,
Cheers.

ce_rob,
I see, you are indeed a verified member. I apologize if I seemed like I doubted you, although that was not my intention.
I hope everything goes well for your fiancee. Is it a benign lump, just a cyst, or is it something more? I really hope it's benign!
Cheers.
i've been scammed myself, so i know how it feels. though your post seemed a bit overbearing, i don't fault you for wanting xda members to be safe when performing transactions. they say it's benign, but will be following up a month or so after surgery to make sure nothing else develops. thanks for the kind words!

How much are you looking for it ?
around $600 +shipping or picked up, since i see you're in LA.
i appreciate the offers and interest, everyone...reasonable or not. still for sale...
Hey!
First, I'm sorry to hear about what happened!
I am however interested in getting an Touch HD as soon as possible myself, and I am located in Los Angeles and would only prefer to meet up to do a deal.
However, since I've been looking at getting the Omnia HD whenever it gets out, I could skip that and get an Touch HD instead, if its for a reasonably good price, especially being an used one.
So I really don't want to be close to 600$ like you said in a previous post, I would love to only get the phone and charger if it could bring down the price, heck, if you would like for me to trade my N95 8GB to bring down the price more I would do it.
Let me know what you think, if anything thanks for at least taking a look at my post.
Hope everything gets better!
I may also be interested in getting a second one if you would be down for selling just the phone/charger. Let me know...
it shocks me to the core every time i hear of someone denied life saving treatment over money, and in the wealthiest country in the world more over i really hope you and your fiance get sorted, my thoughts are with you.
+ 1 totally agree.
Your government needs to address your medical care and get something like the NHS and stop spending so much money on weapons and military and instead spend it on your people & public relations
My heart goes out to you and I hope everything turns out well. Hopefully someone will buy your phone asap
Rich
thank you for all the kind words, guys. i've been in and out the hospital for the last week (my fiance is back home now, thankfully). she's recovering, but has a follow-up next week. either way, i've had a lot of people make offers and back out last minute, so i've listed the item on ebay. i am, however, willing to sell it outside of ebay if someone from here wants it. for pictures, go to my ebay listing found here: LISTING and scroll to the bottom. again, thanks for everything guys!
Hope its going for the better man!
Well I'm interested, but I'm only going up to 450$ as the highest since I in touch with 2 other people selling it for that price atm. I can however meet in person with you it seems unlike the other ones so that would be great but I think 450$ might be too low for you, and I don't know if you would exclude some things to make it cheaper.
If not, best of luck with everything! I hope for the best for you and your fiance! Take care man!
thanks again for the interest, but if you can get it for $450 from two other people, i'd say buy both and sell one of them! that's a great price for the HD. =)
the winning bidder flaked! and the other person that bid $600 just won another auction, what bad luck!! =( anyone interest for $600 shipped 2day air via fedex? US only...will split shipping if anyone out of the country is interested...lmk asap please!
Are there any scratches on the device? As far as on on the screen or on the bezel, back, sides, etc?

Regretting my engraving

So I have a bunch dust in my screen, and a noticeable leak in the corner where its coming from.
So i call HTC and set up a "Swap" they tell me they need a "credit card on file that they will not charge" I give the number wait 2 days... no email.
I call again and they tell me they need to CHARGE my card 530$ before sending the replacement phone. My card doesn't have that kind of room left because I just bought the phone for 530$. Cant really dish out 1060$ on a phone in a week.
So at this point I'm angry and I tell the woman I'd just like to return the phone. Now I'm informed that I cannot return my phone because its ENGRAVED.
My only option is a repair in which i wont have a phone for close to a month.
Pretty awesome considering I just got this phone less than a week ago.
Sure wish i read the fine print.
That's about it... just needed to vent.

this. .
the no returning after an engraving is something I'd expect.
Now, that it will take a month with no phone to get it fixed? Thats just wrong. I choose to not get it in graved to get it faster, but looking back it seems like it was the best decision to make.
It's just an authorization they place on your card until they get your phone back so that you don't run with two phones. That seems pretty reasonable to me. I'd work out a way of being able to do that... you won't have to pay the bill.
What's odd is that I'm getting a swap as well (dead pixel), now granted I haven't heard anything new from them as yet, however I was told that my credit card won't have any sort of hold on it.
yeah, its just a hold on that amount, but you still need that amount as available credit on the card..
that sucks though...i place my initial order with engraving, but my order didnt go through because i didnt have that much available credit on my card, so i canceled my original order, and used a different card, but opted for no engraving after reading it would delay the order up to 72 hours...
but someone here on the forums ordered with engraving on the first day, and got the phone the next day....anyways good luck
That really sucks I have to say, though, google's page makes it pretty clear you're not going to be able to return the phone after engraving.
Here's the entirety of the text on the engraving page:
Want to engrave your phone?
It's easy to personalize your phone. Just type it once and check it twice. Keep in mind, engraved phones cannot be returned.

Well we still get a warranty. HTC offered to "repair" my phones screen, but then told me it could be a long time before I see it again.
I thought i paid 530$ for a phone that was supposed to be new and 100% functional.
I also offered to ship them my phone first. And then have them ship me a new replacement (thereby bypassing the credit hold) and the rep responded "thats just not how we do things"
my problem is I dont have a credit card. So placing a "hold" on my debit card locks up 530$ of my real money... its just not acceptable.

Return != warranty service.
So, no. Simply engraving your phone does not remove the "lose your warranty" counter-incentive to root.
IMHO, the key reason not to get engraving (the lesson I learned from buying the only iPod I've ever owned like 5 years ago), is that unless you engrave it with something generic like "my n1 pwnt ur iphonez" then you basically will have a harder time ever selling it when you upgrade to your next handset. All of my phones thus far have been partially subsidized by the sale of my unlocked and hacked previous handset.
That's a reasonable way to do warranty service. How else would you expect them to do it? Ship you another phone on your honor?
The only thing engraving has to do with this is that you can't now return your phone for your entire money back -- it didn't change their warranty policy, right?

That is how almost every company handles things like this.
You authorize them to take the cost of a phone off your card if you fail to return your broken one. Not a dime comes out unless that happens. Personally, I have dealt with this setup with many companies and have never been screwed.

aaaaah.
This is completely different. Of course, this is not HTC's problem, but yours. That being said, I have gone through what you are going through. There is a means for them to authorize the 530 against a debit card differently from how it is done for a credit card. I had to do this a few years ago as I paid for a part with my debit card and in order to get a replacement (warranty issue) they had to use the same card on file. I saw them deduct the amount out, I called them and after dealing with the bank for a few moments everything was kosher.
Sorry to hear your honeymoon was so short lived with your n1

Sweet 600$... one week old phone eh?
And by the way... none of the dust pictured is stuck under the screen protector. i made sure of that.

Sprint is Really Pissing Me Off!

So, this weekend I noticed some dirt under my screen. It isn't too bad, but I paid good money for this phone and I pay $7 a month for TEP, so I want to be completely satisfied with what I have to make it all worthwhile. I'm one of those paranoid people that pre-order the BodyGuardz full-body kit before the phone has even arrived. Anyways, my phone is absolutely mint condition with the exception for some noticeable smudging on the top left of the screen. I even have a Case-Mate Barely There case on top of the full-body BG to protect the camera.
So I took it to a local Sprint store and waited nearly an hour for them to start working on the phone. The local rep told me it would be 2 hours to get it fixed. No problem as Outback was right next door. I grabbed some food and when I returned I was handed back my phone. Only, the screen was completely scratched up and the top and bottom front edges of the phone were chipped. I calmly approached the rep and said that I wasn't going to accept it as it is in far worse condition than when it arrived. I wasn't surprised when the rep said that they had replaced my screen with one that was laying around. I should have taken pictures of the condition so you guys know what I am talking about. I'm surprised they expected anyone to be ok with that. Anyways, so I have them put my old display back and they said that I would have to wait for a new screen to come about so I can get it swapped.
On the way home, I called customer service and explained the situation. After explaining to him that I was not going to waste any more time going through a similar situation in another store he was able to get an advanced replacement sent to me. He told me it would be a couple of weeks as the device was being preordered. I didn't mind as he told me that I would most likely be receiving a new device rather than a refurb due to the low availability. Sweet right?
So I get home today and I am pleasantly surprised to see the replacement waiting for me. I open it up and I noticed a crappy, $5 USB charger (that's odd), what seemed like an original EVO battery but turned out to be a black battery wrapped in red paper (I thought this one was pretty funny), a brand new back cover, and what looked to be a brand new EVO (display sticker was on and everything). Awesome!
Not quite. As I turn the device over, I notice the camera is completely scratched up. I mean, really scratched up. The rim around it was also all chipped. The kickstand had some scratches on it as well. Here we go again...
After being transferred about 3 times where I had to verify my account and explain the situation each time, I was able to get another replacement sent my way. Same story, might be 2 weeks as it is low demand. I explained to the rep that I don't want to keep going through this and I have had similar experiences with replacing my Palm Pre in the past and asked if there was any way he could request a new device. He said he wasn't able to as was not presented to him in the system. He then proceeded by saying that I could keep the charger and battery for my troubles. I giggled. It was as if they knew they were screwing me over and sent me those as if it would satisfy me. I have dealt with my replacements from Sprint and never have they just given me extra "goodies".
I'll most likely be cancelling my 5-line service with them if I don't get a flawless refurb or a new device from them. I have spent way too much time and energy dealing with this type of situation with my Palm Pre, and now with my EVO.
I was already pissed about the $10 additional smartphone tax and the screwed up discount limitations, but this is just pushing me over the edge.
That is exactly why I don't even bother with insurance... they are especially horrible on sprint but I got am illegally rebranded motorola when I was on centennial... Hated their insurance service
There is a reason why Hitler blew a gasket yesterday.

Good Luck...
Good luck with that flawless idea, I went through 3 refurbs before I demanded brand new phone. On inspection of the new phone, it has light leakage around the gasket and a pin hole next to the home button that light comes through.
I have given up on HTC and Sprint. Once my contract is up, I am either jumping overboard or researching phones thoroughly
Im sorry to hear about that dude. I have had some trouble with sprint but just recently I got a BRAND NEW out of the box phone for free. My battery was shot and it wouldnt charge or turn on so I went in and told sprint that it wouldnt turn on and apparently they didnt think to try a different battery, they gave me a brand new phone and sent me on my way. needless to say, I had an extra bat and it worked just fine.
How is it Sprints fault that you got dirt under your screen and then wanted them to fix it? You should be happy that they do anything for you. If that was an Iphone apple would have looked at you and then laughed for about 3 hours and then said sure sir will replace your phone for $600.00. DO you really think you will get better service somewhere else? I've got news for you, you won't. I for one am very surprised that Sprint does anything for cosmetic damage without a deductible. Take your 5 lines somewhere else and when you come back wining we will welcome you back.

Hope you brought your helmet.
@OP, you can also contact the manufacturer and have it replaced with them. I don't think they send refurbs.
Yeah? Sprint used to let me keep the goodies when I got my pre replaced (3 times out of the 6, atleast)

The moment I am liable for a 2-year contract when purchasing their phone AND pay their full-protection insurance, it is TOTALLY Sprint's responsibility to address the dirt under my screen. It isn't like they're paying for the device out of their pockets. They're simply acting as the middleman between the client and HTC's warranty department. It's the least they can do for someone who is devoting 2-years of their wireless service costs to them and is paying their TEP fees.
I don't know what you're talking about but I used to be with T-Mo for 5 years and NEVER had issues such as these. I always got brand new devices as replacements. I don't know how it is nowadays, but that's how it was 2 years ago.
BTW - Dust under the screen is not cosmetic as it is affecting visibility of the display much like dead pixels would. It is also something that is not supposed to occur on any device.
Finally, your little condescending attitude is not going to help you in life. Good luck!

He's right. T-Mobile has the best customer service. I replaced my G1 twice in one year. Might have been a refurbished one but it was like new. The best part was I never had to go to a repair center. I made a phone call explained my problem they asked if the water indicator was red and that's it. Sent me a new one in the mail and I sent mine right back no charge.

They could have been like T-Mobile when an update bricked my cliq, even with insurance they said they couldn't help me, contact Motorola which in turn told me to contact T-Mobile, I canceled an went to Sprint.

Actually, they are paying for the device, out of pocket. You know how the phone actually costs 500, and you're getting it for 200..?
Akarol,
Being a service manager for a sprint store it bothers me that people have to deal with that stuff.. if any of my service techs did that to people i would slap the **** outta them.. I'm sorry that a service center has treated you that way and with 2 phones none the less. Was it a corporate or just an authorized service center?

Makdasamurai: Thank you for understanding. The sad thing is that it was a corporate store. One of the largest ones here in Orlando (by the Florida Mall). I made the mistake of going to an affiliate store in the past with my Palm Pre (Five Star Cellular) and I will never do that again.
What bothers me is that there is this disparity in service from store to store. I read stories here about people going in and getting a brand new phone on the spot. It's not like they're not being reimbursed that phone by Sprint. Right?
Backdown: I understand what you're saying, but that's nothing new. That's how contract works. They give us a discount, for our commitment with them. Some situations don't even require contracts but the compatibility itself locks you into a commitment such as video game consoles, printers, etc. Trust me, they're making a ton more money on the service than they're losing on devices.
I've been through a very similar situation, so I'll give you some advice. The ONLY people on the phone that can send you a NEW phone, is retentions (account services). If anyone else TOLD you they were sending a new phone, its a lie. That's why you got it so quick, because they send out a refurb instead of waiting for the new one to come back in stock. The lower level reps do not have the power to order a new phone, even if they think they do.
Good to know. I'll be sure to tackle that department if my new replacement disappoints. I just wish I didn't have to go through all this turmoil.

[Q] Bought an S5 on eBay? How to tell if it is a refurb? Does this sound fishy?

I have 2 questions about an S5 that I bought on eBay.
How can I tell if it is a refurbished/reconditioned/used model?
Does what the seller told me sound fishy?
#1. Refurb?
There used to be an RTN menu on other Samsung devices -- you could get to it by dialing ##786# or *#*#786#*#* but that doesn't work on my G900H S5. You also used to be able to get to it by adding com.android.hiddenmenu to some custom launcher but that doesn't work on my S5.
There are many working hidden configuration/diagnostic dialer options that work for me like the service menu - *#0*# But that's not telling me what I want to know.
Any advice to definitely confirm that my device is a reconditioned, refurbished or used phone? Can I tell if it was ever registered on Google Play?
#2. Fishy eBay seller?
Cutting to the chase...
I bought an SM-G900H (Galaxy S5 Octacore) from an eBay seller with 20 to 1 positive reviews and thousands of sales so I was feeling good that everything would be OK. Unfortunately, the phone was clearly used and the seller told me that it was not but that this is normal for the box to be opened so that the phone can be checked for counterfit and/or carrier lock.
Have you ever heard of this? Does this make sense?
I'm not posting the sellers name because I don't want to disparage their reputation in case it is just me being paranoid.
The phone arrived and I noticed that the one sticker looked a little funny and it was already cut so I proceeded with extreme caution.
The first thing that I noticed was that the protective cover on the front had an air pocket. (This is my 4th S5 so I'm an expert at unboxing by this point.)

}
Next, I turned it over and notice that the protective cover on the back had been off for sure -- in fact it was even torn!
But I went ahead and put in the battery without touching the protective covers. The phone powered up 63% battery and went straight to the home screen -- no prompts to set language, nothing. IT WAS ALREADY SET UP!
Finally, I looked closer and noticed that the "do not accept if this seal is broken" seal had actually been cut and someone carefully put another larger sticker on top to cover that up.
So, I requested a return from eBay and Jenny called to explain that my phone was 100% new and that it is normal for foreign phones to be opened by customs (later changed to "Samsung distribution center") in order to "make sure they are not counterfeit." I asked her about all the items and she answered the questions by talking and talking. She told me that phones need to be checked to make sure they are not carrier locked. I countered each with more questions and she told me more stuff.
I asked about the sticker and how customs would have similar Samsung stickers to use when they opened the boxes. She changed to the "Samsung distribution center" and said it was normal. I said that it was a foreign phone so Samsung USA doesn't have anything to do with it, right? She changed the subject to ask if I knew about Beats headphones and told me that there is a huge counterfeit market for these and that all of them are opened.
I asked why it was already set up -- she said they needed to start it completely in order to check the carrier lock.
I asked why the protective cover would need to be removed to turn on the phone and check it as I didn't need to do this to turn it on.
Our conversation went on like this for 17 minutes.
In the end, I said nothing but did actually feel a little better about keeping the phone then I went to bed and now it's a new day.
DOES THIS SOUND FISHY TO YOU?
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD SUCH A THING?
WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE ME TO DO?
How much did you pay?
Have you checked that everything works properly? Knox flag status in download mode?
Download the app Phone INFO and check the counters there (headset connect and charger connect), also check the manufacturing date or anything else that could be fishy.
Paid $630 -- they are now selling them for $549!!!

EDIT: I paid $629.99 (the rest was for fast shipping). No, the KNOX was not tripped.
THANKS for the tip on Phone INFO...
Based on this I am outing the seller -- it was <<<name removed>>> who has 16788 reviews.
Just looked -- they are now selling them for $549 (only a week later)!!!!

Ouch, yes, the bad thing is that they told you that no one had used it before.
I'd been more at ease if they told me that they test the devices before shipping to avoid bad feedback and duds...
Can you show them this evidence? Maybe there's a misunderstanding and you can get some compensation or can file a claim with PayPal as item not received as advertised (since you bought it as brand new condition and paid such price).

Yes, I did send pictures of my evidence when opening my return case with eBay. Then I got the call. I too would have felt better if the answers were more like, 'we open to make sure there are no duds' and not the 15 minutes of empty talk. Also, there is no reason to rip the protector if you're just opening to check for duds. Someone that does this all day could open so nicely that no one could ever tell.
For the future it is best to do it with PayPal instead of eBay because the money gets locked and the sellers deal with you MUCH quicker.
I assume that I should have ZERO problems getting my money back because eBay will make it right. I also have a good feeling because Jenny from <<<name removed>>> also sounds like a nice and honest person.
Maybe this was just a fluke?
The thing I didn't mention is that this is my second phone from them -- the first one had a bad card reader so it's quite a string of bad luck.
Regarding the "compensation" idea -- the phone is basically without warranty because it is a foreign model so Samsung USA won't even answer calls on it and there is no way to get it fixed if I find another problem.
I think that I'm just done.
I meant compensation from the seller, it might be a misunderstanding or bad shipment. Could happen.
Maybe they can send you something to make up for it? That's customer service 101.

Yes, I understood exactly what you meant by "compensation" -- I just jumped to a different train of thought.
That train of thought is that I don't want a used phone which might have been returned for any reason, especially if it's not serviceable in the country that I live in. For example, maybe I might not test/use bluetooth for 6 months and the reason the phone was returned was because of a bad bluetooth radio. Do I need to Q/A every feature?
Thanks again for all the help and advice!
Anyone else have different advice?
I remember a while back looking at the official thread for that app PHONE INFO on xda, that users who had brand new Samsung phones also had 2/3 uses of the headphones and charger.
So I guess the phone ports are tested before being boxed from factory, but don't hold me to that.
The ripped protective plastic is a bit worrying though. As the woman said it went through customs, who knows how they treated your phone.
About them setting up the phone and checking if it's counterfeit, sounds understandable too, I've read lot about fake samsung s5's and I'd rather that company never-msrp, check before sending it you, rather then for you to find out its a fake.
Also to ensure peace of mind, the PHONE INFO app, has a refurbishment check in the menu.
I just got a new Samsung S5 and after reading this thread, decided to download the Phone INFO app from the play store. My headset connect count shows 4 (I have not yet connected a headset), and my charger connect count shows 6. I know my phone is definitely brand new. It was purchased from a larger electronics retail store in my country and the phone was definitely sealed. My screen protector was similar to the OP's, where the top left hand corner has a slightly bubble.
Having said all of this, if you feel the phone is not 'new', and that is what you have paid for, I would be returning the device.
OOOPS!

Now I feel bad about naming the seller -- she was super nice on the phone and the phone was shipped very quickly. That being said it wasn't in new condidition, someone tried to cover that up (on the outside) and I find it odd that customs would have Samsung "DO NOT ACCEPT IF SEAL IS BROKEN" stamps. I wonder who really put the new seal on top of the old seal.
But I still feel bad if I in any way slandered them (which I obviously clearly have). Especially if was incorrect in my reason for doing so.
Still interested to hear more comments about your counts and/or methods for checking a phone and/or what you would do in my case.

Guys, there are no refurb S5's on the market unless it has been repaired by some seller himself and resold. Refurbed units have not yet had time to go through the refurbishing cycle which takes close to 2 months. If any of you had their phone broken by something covered under warranty, you'd all get a new unit provided by your carrier and not a refurbed unit.
All of you that bought on ebay simply bough a used unit sold as new.

Good points.
One bad thing about having an octacore in the US is that Samsung won't support it. As soon as you tell them the IMEI (required to open a case) they tell you to call someone else.

Yeah, it makes sense. But thats not Samsung's fault. The carriers push samsung to act that way. In canada, you never have to deal with Samsung, you simply call your carrier, tell them your phone is not working, and if after their basic troubleshooting steps the phone still doesn't work, they send you a new or refurbished unit with a return box to send back your defective unit. It's much better that way as you have no down time. Also, it means no matter if your phone is rooted and you fried your cpu because you dont know how to overclock, samsung never has to approve of the return. I know that because i fried my s3 by overvolting and overclocking my phone and i still got a unit provided by my carrier.

Thanks for the advice about this program.
I got a replacement just today from T-Mobile and wanted to see if it was refurbished or not and my counts are 80 on headset and 260 on charger.
So that answers my question.
So much for the expectation of a new one they told me.
If it don't fix the wifi calling issue that line had it will be going back.
Phone Info app was helpful
I'm thankful to see this thread today. I just got a Galaxy Tab 12.2. When i turned it on it didn't go through the normal setup. Then I found the device name was "Ballsac Bob Cannon."
Before thinking too much about that I changed the device name. I was connected to my work network and felt the device name might be considered inappropriate.
When i got home, i fianlly started trying to use the device. It was so slow! I found ,myself waiting on everything . For a high end device like this, thats a problem.
So this morning I took to xda to find out if there is a way to tell if it was used. I used the Phone Info app. The charger has been connected over 40 times!!! And the refurb check shows its refurb or not genuine....
FWIW, the headset counter also said two. A previous poster commented this might be normal.
Also, i got to looking at the list of wifi networks. Its been connected to "amzn-guest."
Looks like I'm calling Amazon today!

Screen replacement options/Assurnant insurance experience

so I have a black s7 edge (t mobile variant) and I have a cracked screen/ good lcd. so I claimed through the assurance insurance that t mobile provides, paid the 175 deductible, then my replacement shows up a day later. now my issue is that the phone is titanium. the other issue is that the phone doesn't even power up or charge. i called the company stated that i have a BLACK phone not TITANIUM and that the the phone doesn't even turn on/charge. they said they can't guarantee the color and would send me another replacement phone after they receive the first replacement phone back. I told them they also better send a black one this time and that there is no reason why they cant get me a black one being the phone is only 7-8 months old. Now if the device was a year and half plus old, then ya i'll take what i can get. my question is has anyone else had this issue with Assurant about a color and did you resolve it? also if they send me another titanium/gold device, i'm calling them up and demanding a refund so i can put the funds towards a screen replacement which leads to my 2nd question. How much did you guys pay for a screen replacement and where did you go? I can also do the repair myself but I'm having a hard time finding parts.
Before you demand anything, you should look into the warranty terms. If it does state that a device can be of any color and you end up with a gold, or pink, or whatever device, then you are still SOL. Then it would be your fault for paying for the warranty without reading the terms, and your demands and threats aren't going to get you anywhere.
And before you tell me that my post isn't helpful, read it again, as it is quite helpful. If the terms state that you will get an identical device, they can be taken to small claims court. And they aren't going to deal with that, so a simple threat can get you what you want. However, if they don't give you any assurances about color, and you get a different color, demanding or threatening them to get the black phone will result in them telling you to pound sand.
And lastly, I find phone colors to be silly. Who gives a crap what color your phone is? Well, besides Apple users who lose their minds when they released a color that is slightly blacker than the previous black. When you get a working phone, be happy and move on with your life.
The terms actually says they will replace it with a refurbished or new device at their leisure, no guarantees on anything, no mention of colour either, though in my experience I've gotten the same colour as my current s7e, but once had an issue with them replacing a sony z3 with a samsung s5, which is complete garbage compared to the z3, but t-mobile gave me $100 towards a new device when I took the issue up with them, all goody.
The terms dictates that they can replace the phone with any compatible devices. If they offer you a lesser device then you can argue. Getting the same phone with a different color, I don't think you can do anything about that.
They probably don't make the black one anymore. I have issue with mine and going through t-mobile exchange warranty, the wait time is 29 days for Samsung to ship the black one to the store.
My other line, I have recently received a silver S7e from PHP. It works fine and in perfect condition.
Well I would never take this to small claims court and I did read the contract lol. This is also samsungs top phone out right now and it's not even a year old so there shouldn't be any reason why they don't stock my color. I even told them I would wait until they stocked it. Am I being picky about the color, yes I sure am but I recently bought the phone and trusted to mobiles insurance that they offer which is mediocre at best. I also talked them yesterday on the phone and they said of if I wasn't happy to send the replacement back and I'll be refunded. They only thing I'll lose out on is 10 dollars from one months of payment. I just think that t mobile could get a better insurance company than this. Veriron always shipped me the EXACT phone that I as paying insurance for. Like I stated before of the phone was older then I would be more understanding of why I couldn't get the exact same phone. For example what if I had the oylimpic/batman edition S7e??? Getting a gold phone that's worth half the price is acceptable? Plus on swappa the black variant is worth more.

Per a poster above, it sounds like they offer any compatible device. They make no guarantees regarding a particular device/color/etc, nor do they promise it to be even the same make or model as the device you are returning. I suppose if for whatever reason you decided to spend double the money on a phone with an exclusive color scheme and nothing else, you may have an argument with the insurance company, but it sounds like their terms are pretty bulletproof as far as minimizing how much they pay out. They would probably laugh at you, and I wouldn't blame them. Perhaps the insurance is crappy, but then again, nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to buy it. The terms were always right in front of you. So if you actually did read (and fully understand) the contract, I imagine you wouldn't be here complaining that they sent you the wrong color. Yes, you deserve a working device, and it sounds like that's as far as the insurance goes. I will also introduce you to the concept of depreciation. Whether you buy a car or a phone, the value drops as soon as you take possession of it. If you wreck your brand new car a week after you buy it, you are not going to get the full price that you paid for it, unless you pay extra for a full-value replacement that some insurance plans offer. I will say it is likely the same concept here. If a different color phone is cheaper for them to provide, they will provide the cheaper phone, which they are allowed to do per the contract.
And to the other point, I do believe that T-Mobile no longer offers the black GS7E. I had to exchange my phone under warranty through T-Mobile about a month ago and it took them over 2 weeks to send the black model to the store. And I put the request in when T-Mobile was still carrying the black phone. So it is very much possible that they no longer carry the black device, in which case you are just hoping for left over stock, which may or may not exist.

I understand fully but I also didn't get laughed at. I was told I would get a refund (which they don't have to do). As far as car insurance they technically don't replace your existing car. They write a check for the value of it. So that's apples to oranges, if that were the case I would be more than happy to receive a check for the value of my device. The device you receive are refurb and not new. So therefore you would if I send my black device in, it would be repaired and re distributed, basically replenishing the stock of the color. Unless they were sending out black phones to people who had gold/silver. In any event, I'm settled because I will be reimbursed if I do not receive what I requested and I'll will have the device repaired.
You received the same phone with Vzw because Asurion has it in stock. Asurion was the last tmo provider too before tmo switched to AS. Their terms are pretty much the same. They can replace your device with the same or equivalent device, or reimburse you.
If you read the terms, $175 tier allows them to replace your device up to $1500 I think. If they don't the exact device instock, you can ask to be reimbursed to purchase a new device. But good luck with that, the last time I tried to replace a Nexus 6P, after a lot of back and forth, they wouldn't pay me. I was offered a S5 before that which I refused because it's not an equivalent device. I finally got the Note 5 as a replacement.

Aursion must keep better stock because I didn't have an issue with my note 3 until a year and half after I bought it and was able to get the exact phone. This is my complaint, the s7 edge isn't even that old and they can't get me the same phone? I was also sent a device that doesn't even power up, I don't see that written anywhere on this contract that I would be receiving a brick as a replacement
It's a piece of electronic. It's not rare that a new device is defectived right out of the box.
The insurance replaced device comes with 180 days warranty through t-mobile. Since you have the titanium color now which they actually have in-stock, t-mobile will most likely send you a replacement overnight.
I just came back from a trip to Asia. My phone had charging issue so I stopped by a Samsung customer service center. Since they couldn't help me because my US version phone is incompatible with the part (the screen and the USB port is together in a single part), they told me they haven't received Titanium color screen part from Samsung for awhile and they have been swapping the defective Titanium phone out for a Black phones or give customer a loaner. Quite opposite. Surprisingly since Samsung made most of the Galaxy in that country.
One thing I noticed is the S7 Edge over there does't have the "Gaxaxy S7 Edge" branding on the back cover.
