No more Sony Compacts? - Xperia Z5 Compact General

So apparently the Zs are dead replaced by the newly announced Xperia X series.
There were 3 X models, none smaller than 5". Does that mean there will be no "compact" models anymore or for at least some time?
I think I'm done with Sony. Their decision making is a train wreck.

They can give is new devices with 4,6" or 4,7" devices.
Think about the performance which the compact devices have. No compact device from another manufacturer has nearly the same performance than their big brothers as from Sony!
I bought my z5c 3 days ago and i had changed from a z1c, and I didn't realize the different performance. The only change i realized is the fingerprinting sensor.
So what you want from a real compact device?

I did understand, that the X-series is "mid-to-high-end", whereas the Z will stay the "high-end" series.
(I think, the X-series does not make sense, too many devices... - just make the Z-series little cheaper ).

I'm sure they'll revisit in few years when Apple makes few more billion on the updated 5S and Sony slumps down further.
I'm by no means an Apple supporter but they seem to be the only ones that have any understanding what the market wants and how to make money...

I was telling myself I should have not bought the Z5 Compact and waited for X Performance instead, then I saw the expected price and I think Z5 Compact was a very good choice.
I really don't understand Sony's strategy at all now. Announcing new phones that won't be out for months is going to royally duck up the Z5 sales. No compact models, no phablet models. What is this X series supposed to be? Is Z6 coming at all? So many questions.
Also where's my Marshmallow? (but that's a whole other thread)

You'll have to wait more months to know this.
The XA is 5" but, based on the width, is nearly compact.
I think that Sony will launch a replacement for the Z5C at the end of the year.
Compact (one-handed) mid/hi-end phones are getting "a bit" popular. Apple is trying to launch a smaller phone (I know a lot of people who still use the small iPhone and consider the 4.7" iPhone 6/6S big). I think that Google realized that many customers didn't like the size jump from 5 to 5X. (And I didn't like the jump from GNexus or Moto X to Nexus 5 in size), so maybe we'll have some small Nexus alternatives, who knows..

In Japan, smaller phone is very demanding that's why Sony making compact and you guys will see next model again in future no worry. Z1c and Z3c even beat the sales of IP5s in Japan.

Sony has stated that z serieswas phase from sony ericsson to Sony. Now x series is their new series that will be their top line.

Let us all join in a moment of silence

Well I guess that just makes our z5c that extra bit special

But the Xperia XA is based on the budget Mediatek P10 SOC. Unless they put a high-end SOC in a compact phone I wouldn't consider it an alternative to the Z compact-series!
I hope they have something else coming. Otherwise I guess I'll have to stick with my current phone for a while longer than planned.

Sony fooled me once with the Xperia S and now with the Z5C (that I have kept in a box waiting for the FW update). They will never fool me again, that's for sure.

What was wrong with the XPERIA S? I LOVED that phone. Camera was a bit naff but everything was good. I especially liked the transparent LED strip at the bottom.

As you said, the camera, and the lack of updates, same as for the Z5C.

Was a smidgen close to buying the z5c again after trying and not liking the 5x. Glad I didn't. Support will be dead imo. I'm going for the new iphone se. Only new small high end phone incoming. I know most here don't care but it is rumoured to have the a9/m9 processors, hopefully 2gb ram, 12mp Camara, touch Id ect. Basically a high end 4 incher. Been using my son's old iphone 5 for the last couple weeks and I'm kind of loving it. Yeah I know, you'd never go to Apple no matter what. Ha well if Sony had their crap together, I wouldn't have been persuaded by another manufacturer.

I was a XS white user and that one no doubt more beautiful than my Z5c... lol

@weasel is right. Sony was the best manufacturer that prided performance in the compact lineup vs offering us a Mini. This has changed due to lack of sales cause they don't believe in lining pockets of reviews some 3 yrs ago to win the market and bait clicks on every Sony news. They pass HUGE dollars to bolster security leak and paid employees that sued them due to that security leak.
Their ensuring manufacturing costs don't explode with the higher US dollar which also affects profits in Europe and the UK!! Look at current currency exchange rates then tarrifs this hurts profits!
Sony is on a path to offer a sort of luxury lineup at the mid range with acceptable performance without heavy R&D which translates into more profits from revenues to fund a better Z series replacement at the high end luxury scale. Sony can test the waters with the X series (which is NOT the first time this existed, recall the X1 that was a beauty but built by HTC) this allows the Z lineup to continue selling, while they stop manufacturing in early May, empty out the distribution channels and complete revenues for that target market I'm happy to buy 2 Xperia Z5C's to hold me back until a real luxury compact suits my needs from Sony. Then the X lineup is introduced, if it fails no major cost to Sony. If it takes they may be able to release a new series with a name not a letter. Sony is running out of letters X is now repeated in 5yrs, M, S, Z, T, U, not much left that doesn't sound weird.

"I did understand, that the X-series is "mid-to-high-end", whereas the Z will stay the "high-end" series.
(I think, the X-series does not make sense, too many devices... - just make the Z-series little cheaper )." the Z series will have a price cut soon. But that's retail look for cheaper quality enjoyed Z's to keep you running. MARSHMALLOW DELAY is annoying BUT I'd rather NOT have Android Memory sharing like LG did with the G5!! I paid for my MicroSD I own it not Android! So don't for it on anyone. Samsung learner this with the SGS7 so I'm inclined to think Sony will too.
@josie I seem to recall the Xperia S had a few updates to Kitkat thus well supported. Not sure about camera woes though you may need to elaborate in full.

Sony already gave a statement saying the Z line is no more. I think it's a REALLY terrible idea, but they know better I guess.

It's possible they maybe working on something better b

Sony becoming HTC..More phones this year..WTH!

Sony about to unleash four new Android smartphones later this year
Sony has been on quite a roll. At least as far as mobile phone launches are concerned. This year alone, five handsets in different segments have been launched by the company. These range from the high-end Xperia Z and ZL to the mid-range Xperia SP to the low-tier Xperia E and Xperia L. But it seems the company is not stopping at just these five.
According to the rumour, a certain Sony Xperia A, codenamed Dogo, will be added to the Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo’s line-up sometime in the summer months. It is said to have a 4.6-inch screen and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Other specs include 2GB of RAM, 32GB of native storage and a 2300 mAh battery capacity. The phone will be water and dust resistant, like the Xperia Z and Tablet Z, and will bring along support for NFC. An IR Blaster is also said to be aboard.
Also on the roadmap is the Sony Xperia UL, which we are dreading to see since it is codenamed Gaga. The phone is said to be very closely based on the Sony Xperia ZL and will also have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 under the hood. Other specs that have leaked of the Xperia UL say it will have 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and a 2300 mAh battery as well as NFC support.

So they are just gonna churn out phones after phones..Xperia Z will be forgotten even before the end of the year this way..And apart from that..why so many phones? And with same capabilities of XZ? Whats wrong with sony..Htc just learnt its lesson!
Releases of new phones won't make your Z any worse, FYI.
As long as Sony release 4.2.2 and hopefully 5.0 there's nothing wrong with them spamming the market.
Its not just about firmware..If you release so many phones in the market the brand value of a flagship like XZ decreases as your giving same features and water/dust proofing on lower end phones.. what was so unique about XZ? this was one of the key factors.
Well Sony are not going competed in the mobile market only releasing a couple of handsets pair year. If they did they may as well just go home. Think Apple are the only manufacturer that could truly do that at present. Remember Sony are struggling at the moment. So if this is there business strategy then so be it. I still love my XZ price depreciation and all.

Well company needs to capture the market, Z is already running on an old processor, flagship from HTC and Samsung are using faster processors already, they have to keep up the fight with them. That said i am sure Z will get upgraded to 5.0 and we should not care much about other phones.
XZ does not have an 'old' processor..Yes its S4 Pro but its clocked and implemented in such a way that its 2 time faster than nexus 4 with the same processor.
Everything can be run on an XZ that S4 and HTC one can do..There is nothing they can do extra. The jump from XZ to ONE is 30% and that is just benchmarks..In real life usage you will be able to use any app or game that the HTC ONE plays..Battery endurance test on gsm arena is same 48hr for both..Btw HTC ONE Gl graphics benchmark is just 30 fps..Which is lower than XZ
P.S- XZ is cheaper than HTC ONE AND S4...I got it for 644$ in my country..S4 and HTC ONE are coming for Around 773$
While I do understand you might feel bad that your Z will get outdated soon, you should also understand the situation Sony is in currently.
The Mobile business is THE most crucial business for Sony currently and their future depends on it. If they can consolidate market share further and grab the No.3 spot with a solid lead over HTC, Huawei, ZTE etc it will secure the future of Sony Group as a whole.
So new phones will definitely keep coming this year as Sony needs to survive.
I think it's a bad mistake. Dilution of the brand can never be a good idea. This is not a question about keeping up with the competition, if they wanted to do that, then they should have strived to release the Z with the 600 cpu. Releasing devices with that cpu in September or October will not make any impression because by then all eyes will have turned to the 800 cpu and whatever Qualcomm has to offer after that.
This strategy didn't turn out too well for the Xperia T, the phone that quick time forgot. Even the Xperia S is still regarded by most as Sony's flagship of 2012.
Sony should not get too involved in the spec race, well as far as cpus go anyway. The s4 pro on the Z is plenty fine and it's not it's weakness.
Sony's major problem is software development, everywhere you look the Xperia brand is being let down by software. Whether it be releasing phones with dated os and taking forever to update. The Xperia S is still waiting for JB while the galaxy s2, Samsung's phone of 2011 is about to get it if it hasn't already.
On top of that, you often get very weak software from Sony that takes ages for them to improve.
The software on my Z is its weakest link, whether it be the ui lag or the poor camera software that means you really have to take your time to get the best results from the camera.
Again and again, the hardware is being let down by the software.
Considering how lean and feature poor the Sony software is, it's really shockingly poor that it takes them so long to a) release stable builds and b) roll out updates.
Samsung's touchwiz is packed to the hilt with loads of software additions but yet, Samsung get it out quicker, up to date, and more stable than Sony can dream of right now.
For me, this is where Sony falls down really badly. They really need to bring in some excellent developers to turn things around.
Having a so called flagship waiting almost a year for a software update is just pathetic.
I said it before, I'll reserve my final judgement on the Z until I see the 4.2.2 software because I know it takes Sony linger than most to put out decent and stable software. Also the 4.1 has little or no software additions from Sony with the exception of the new launcher which I think is a bit ridiculous without an overview mode and the stamina mode and new camera app. Everything still looks the same from the gingerbread days.

I agree with your software complaint. The fact the camera takes 3 seconds to open is completely unacceptable, especially considering the Xperia S was so fast at booting up the camera. That said, I don't have too many problems with the software on the Z.
This is my first Sony smartphone, but I've noticed Sony almost always releases phones with outdated software AND dated computing hardware. The Xperia S was the first dual core Sony smartphone (I think) and it was months behind the Sensation, North American S2,and many others, all while having the same processor. Same goes for the Xperia T.
The fact that Sony intends to release so many phones this year probably has something to do with getting their high end devices to as many carriers/countries as possible. For instance, the Xperia Z isn't available in Canada. We're getting the ZL. In any event, coupling Sony's reputation for not releasing timely updates and the fact they're going to allegedly have 4-5 flagship devices this year, I'm not confident we're going to see many significant updates. Hopefully CM is able to keep us up to date!

It isn't a new thing from Sony anyway... I have never use smartphone other than Sony 's for my entire life and it was since somewhere around x10 to x arc period they started to release phones to different target user like flagship, middle range and budget phones In each year.

They simply replaced with smartphones their previous portfolio.
And this is natural. Every other OEM does that exept Apple.
This is good for the company to support all the market niches.
Would you rather they release phone to cater for everyone's budget OR be like apple and only sell expensive devices?
Sent via my HTC One using XDA Premium
^Seriously! Its not about them releasing multiple phones..Its about them releasing SO MANY phones..
Why not one for budget, mid-range and flagship? This is what i mean!
Simple. To make money. They know that if they release 12 phones in a year, for example, that 3 will sell REALLY well, 6/7 will sell fairly well and the remaining probably won't sell very well. But each one of those is still a sale which means more money for the company.
Sent via my HTC One using XDA Premium
The ZL is understandable as it's an experimental device to see how users react to the form factor. If it does well, I'm pretty certain Sony's flagship of 2014 will follow the same style. But if they release another flagship this year, that'll really piss me off, there is no need for a 600 cpu replacement for the Z. The Zs got all the raw power it needs. Flagship devices should stand for a year at least, the successful companies follow that principle. They can release a note style device this year but a new flagship smartphone, that demeans the Xperia brand, not to talk of the consequences for software support. They shouldn't go down that road again. Like I said before, software is their greatest weakness and I'd like to see signs that all resources are consolidated and brought to bare to offer the best possible user experience to a dedicated line of phones. If Sony don't address this software issue soon, I could conceivably go Samsung next year. HTC have proved that they don't quite no which way to go.
I also have a feeling that the gs4 will be the last cheap looking Samsung flagship we'll see. The s5 I expect will be different because it must be obvious to Samsung that that's it's weakest link too.
I also believe that Samsung is slowly beginning to accept that it's own proprietary stuff can't compete. We're likely to see them move away from super amoled to solux LCD displays and from exynos to snapdragon. We can see that happening already as 70% of s4s will use the 600 cpu. I don't think they'll have an exynos that can take on say a 2.3ghz cortex a15 snapdragon 800 cpu.

What's wrong with releasing 4-6 phones a year ? They need to address the whole market, not only high-end devices, but also low-end, mid-end and entry level. Now people seem to have a problem with too many phones being released... seriously, what the hell has gotten into you people ?

But Sony is releasing 4-5 flagship devices. From the looks of it, 3 are coming out with the Qualcomm 600 cpu, and likely another with the Qualcomm 800 at the end of the year. Good for them but I suspect it will leave those of us with Xperia Z and ZL's waiting longer for updates.

Then wouldn't the obvious demand is for sony to hire more software engineer than to demands that they stop making more phone?
Other thing from other post is that isn't The other obvious answer on why they cant just release 3 phone a year for different price range is because HTC has done it with their one series and by the looks of it, the strategy fails miserably.
And I think from the time of the arc, sony had released 2 flagship a year, so not sure why people still think they will only do just one. The thing about sony is it main market are where people buy PAYG and without subsidies. So people are really price sensitive. Releasing 2 flagship would land sony as the cheapest but most powerful phone on the block. The Z here in Malaysia can be bought at around us550. Making it slightly more expensive than the nexus 4 and S3. The hTC one and S4 are a cool us200 more. The xperia V, which are much better than the s3 is now at US300, making it even cheaper than the S2.
Interesting enough by doing what a lot of people here hates, sony climb to number 2 spot just behind Samsung, while HTC with their one series experiment that people here seems to love drop even lower. So I guess, they are on the right track.

All it looks like they're doing is throwing loads of phones out on the market and hoping one sticks and becomes successful.
The more devices they release the more delays it will cause with updates.
Bad move in my opinion but they obviously know better.
You do get the sense though with Sony that once a new mobile comes out their 'previous flagship' is dropped like a sack of *bleep* and it takes forever for anything to be updated.

Is this the end of our Xperia?

Yea, hopefully Xperia support lasts long enough so our phones stay updated/supported for a reasonable amount of time.
This is sad news. Sony did a good job on the Xperia line. Their hardware design is great. Their ui and menu design has been good too.
I was looking forward to the next compact.
Without a new sony Xperia compact, I'll probably get whatever the next HTC one is after the M9. Or keep my z3c as long as I can til it gets really outdated.

If Sony pulls this through, it would be really a shame.
But the marketing for Xperia devices was a disaster, or should I say really non-existant, at least in Europe. So many people are not aware of the Z3 series. For most of the people it's either Apple, Samsung or (maybe) HTC. When people think about Sony phones, they still think about Sony-Ericsson phones of the 2000's...
The Z3 and Z3c got excellent reviews on nearly every tech website but it's nothing without marketing, unfortunately.
I think the Z3c has enough performance to last until 2017. I hope until then that other manufacturers realize that not everyone wants half a tablet in their pockets.
How would the support for those who have or think about for a Xperia (I'm wanting a Z3c)?

If I were to guess (and thats really all it is) lolipop will probably be the last major android update for the Z3 by Sony along with maybe a few bug fixes here and there.
Hardware support will probably remain the same for the next couple years at least.
I'm happy with Z3c size and battery life. Lollipop is on the way and we'll probably get 5.1, so this phone will be usable for another couple years. Might even pickup a spare for the future.
Sony mobile could turn a profit if they did their marketing homework, in the US they are hardly known, but it seems they prefer to lay down and die.
A friend asked me the other day what kind of phone I had. I told him a Sony Z3 Compact. His reply... "I didn't know Sony made phones."
Marketing FAIL...
Oh i see bad times coming. Chinese phones everywhere. *shivering*
Sony is the only company right now, which produces phones who actually attract me, except HTC maybe.
Would be really sad when they close their mobile section.
On the other side here in Germany Sony phones are quite widespread and have a high reputation and i don't know any person who doesn't know that Sony produces smartphones.
Sony has indeed failed miserably with its marketing in the US. It's almost weird to see how little the Xperia Z3 phones have been promoted after getting a ton of amazing reviews in the press last fall. Reviews like that, coupled with phenomenal battery life and waterproofing (two huge advantages over competing phones) should have been a license to print money with the Z3 models, but I've barely seen an Xperia ad anywhere and clearly there were minimal contracts with carriers. A first-year marketing student could have done a better job of promoting them than Sony.
But that seems to be Sony's overall problem. Great products, appalling marketing. When they do have a bestseller it's almost by accident. Sort of the opposite of Microsoft, which pours money into marketing crummy products (and poured money into buying Nokia only to do pretty much nothing so far).
Sad that the Xperia line might come to an end. I hope Sony can find a partner to continue... maybe just a marketing partner would help. Having lived with the Z3c for 2-3 months now I cannot imagine going back to a phone with less than 3-days battery life (for my usage) or one that's any bigger than this (perfect for one-handed operation). Those two attributes alone were the reason I gave up on Nexus/Motorola phones. Yes, the Z3c has it's flaws, as does every phone, but in this case the flaws are easily outweighed by the advantages.

reminds me of Sony's handling of MiniDisc in North America. so many dumb choices and missteps along the way, like failing to capitalize on MD Data and Hi-MD, or remedying the clunkiness of proprietary NetMD before getting swept under the wave of MP3; and keeping the technology prohibitively expensive for the average consumer. and let's take a moment and remember these other Sony fails:
Betamax
DAT
MemoryStick
UMD
Satio (a touchscreen Symbian phone with a 12MP camera -- high-spec for 2009 -- with Xenon flash. phone never saw the light of day in North America, even when Symbian was the most popular mobile OS in the world, though don't get me started on Symbian's fail.)
lest we forget, at one point, pre-Xperia Sony (in partnership with Ericsson) had a super-popular Walkman phone (w810, if i'm remembering correctly), which came out about two years or so before the iPhone was released in 2007. Sony failed to innovate or anticipate the future, and were still releasing pointless multiple versions of dumb phones for a few years after.
oh, and one more: Sony was the first to come out with a music ID service on their devices -- "TrackID" via Gracenote, which is included on our phones still -- but Sony let Shazam drink all the milkshake. still remember former co-workers talking about how revolutionary the Shazam app was, years after the service was already stock on Sony phones.
so yes, there's a history of Sony failures. but i hope the Z3(c) isn't added to the list. i really dig this phone! for the record, i was also really into MD. had a Sony deck, still have two players and a couple dozen MDs (which haven't been used in a long time).
Yikes. And I just purchased a 2 year extended warranty coverage for the Z3. So if my phone dies in the next 3 year, Sony will not be able to replace it?

Z6 even a smaller option?

Reports are that the z6 family will offer a "mini" version sporting a 4" display as well as an "ultra" 6.4" as well as the compact and regular Z. 5 total phones. Better question is will it happen as early as MWC 2016? Maybe an explanation on a 6 month release for the world would be because the 5 series is not selling too well? It's conceivable considering all the chatter and hate on the 810 and possibly weak Camara. Maybe Sony is needing the 6 series to rebound.

Z5 series is still the saviour after Z3+
The 4" Z6 Mini probably won't get a good camera as decent as Z5c/Z6c.
If that rumor is true at all, Sony may be trying to consolidate its lineup instead of having a bunch of different phones no one know about.
The mini will be a mid range phone. Don't hold your breath.
It's supposed to have the Snapdragon 652 (if it exists)
Sony won't release another compact (or mini) until late 2016. They have consistently stuck to a 1 year release cycle for the compact versions of the Z series (REF: Z1C, Z3C, Z5C). Do not expect to see another compact released this spring.
Sony may change its mind because of the SD810 mess and release something soon. I will be first in line to get the next Compact.

What is the "SD810 mess?" Are you referring to the processor? I think you're projecting a few reported problems on to the entire product distribution. Mine gets warm sometimes, but so did all my other phones.
I'd rather see the supposedly leaked but more likely dreamt up sketches from a phone nerd or Sony fan for the Xperia P2 put into a product. Those looked awesome and when there is virtually no bezel you can get a little over 5 inch in the size not much bigger than what a z5c is today.
But well phones are sich personal items, there are probably as many "perfect phone concept" as there are people on the planet.

Goodbye xperia

I have got xperia sp as my first android phone,it gave a lot of memories,a connection to my old friends via whatsapp or the smooth android with a huge 1gb memory,i bought it in 2013, but sadly it has worn out,i have currently flashed android 6 and planning to upgrade to android 7.
The dualshock 3 pairing is most crucial aspect of this phone,in its essence this phone was a legend.
I will ask you guys this,
What should i buy next,
iPhone 6s/7 or a new android phone?
comment below
I think you should buy an Android phone.
Xperia XZ - Xperia X Compact my suggestions.
Whatever works best for you?
I, for example, tried a few phones and decided after it which one would be my next phone. I advice you to do the same: try a few ones and choose the one that works best for you.
I dont want iphone to show off or something,i just want to use it as well..ios..so it is an option otherwise i am thinking google pixel...has anyone used it??
So, what's your budget? Around $650 or something?
And are you play any games on phone?
I'd say get a Xperia X Compact, if it fits on your hands. (Same screen size, but different body dimension, when it hold my hand it feels much better than Z3 Compact, yep i've checked at phone shop.)
[Off Topic] I still using Xperia SP, Because i'm waiting releasing the Snapdragon 830 and 835 (somewhere in future 2018 Q1)
If they're asking to me "Why waiting for new snapdragon? get it buy the Google Pixel, damn!"
But, the reason is, it would waste of money, what they're gimmick like fetaures, hardware, camera. (The most important strongest chipset it means you get good FPS in newer games, Virtual Reality cool stuff, 10nm node on chip Snapdragon, emulator if could get work like NFS Carbon, Zelda Wind Walker etc. *blah blah too much stuff if you wouldn't want to hear*)
Wait there's more, Otherwise if you don't have enough money then next year it will price cut cost, you could get steal money.

This video is funny as hell. Comparing the specs, it blows my mind how freaking slow android is. I mean, the One Plus 3T has like 3 times more RAM than the iPhone 7 Plus, and when it "beats" it the difference is like a few seconds at most. Of course, the A10 Fusion is a freaking beast and IOS optimization is incredible, but still.
xperia x performance would be awesome.
A bit late?
I might be a bit late to this post but all I have got to say is that Sony have changed a lot, their devices used to be really nice and the software was great back in the pre-2014 days, but since then I think Sony has gone downhill, none of the devices even appeal to me anymore. Like the other guy said, don't limit yourself to Sony and go for something different-whatever is right for you. In my opinion LG is very nice-their devices appeal to me a lot.
My budget is around 600-650$

You still haven't got a new phone? If so then you might as well wait for MWC 2017, end of Feb. There will be plenty of announcements including Nokia who may announce several phones. :victory:
Even if there isn't anything good announced, prices of current devices may be driven down so then you could jump in and get a good bargain.
That is why i am waiting for mwc, nokia android phone and many more are on their way.
Btw galaxy s8 might be announced in mwc 2017 next month

I really loved the SP. I bought a Z3 Compact to replace it but it's slightly smaller than the SP and never felt right and then I broke it :crying:
When I read about the Edge Mod for the Moto Z I immediately backed it and bought a Moto Z Play.
So far I like everything but the camera on it. It has a great battery too.
My carrier had it on sale for half price so I ended up paying around $460 CAN with the Edge mod.

[rant] Starting to hate Moto/Lenovo :(

They release new phones quicker than they release updates. Reading about the Oreo update on GSMAarena, just made my blood boil ... "That said, the Moto Z Play is unlikely to receive another update for some time (or ever)".
Yes, maybe GSMArena is wrong and we will get security fixes after the Oreo update. But so far, Moto/Lenovo has disappointed me with their slow and sparse OTAs.
Seeing how they are going to release the Moto Z3 Play soon just makes me angry. The performance increase is minimal, the battery will most likely be as small as the one in the Moto Z2 Play, or smaller.
Am I stupid to think that a new model of anything should be improved so much that owners of the current model might want to upgrade? At least after the third generation? The Z2 and Z3 series are aimed at new customers, not at owners of a Z1.
@Moto/Lenovo: Slow the f**k down! Support your cr*p with regular updates! And release new phones when technology (CPU, battery, camera ...) has improved significantly to make the next generation of phones interesting to your current customers!

Yeah the Z2 play was a dud. Take the main selling point of this phone and nerf it... the battery.
I'd be very happy though with an incremental upgrade, maybe some more RAM and a 636 CPU... but make it IP68 waterproof! So far though looks like the Z3 Play is also a dud with a 3000mah battery.
The Galaxy A7 is basically the kind of phone I'd like, but without all the Samsung bloat. Bigger battery than the Z Play and waterproof. Maybe 4GB+ of RAM would be nice though.
That's why i will not waiting for z3play and buy honor view 10. It's sad that Motorola phones not appeal anymore and hope they will make intresting phone so people again look at them.

Exactly, battery and headphone plug
I could imaging that Moto (and others!) simply want to have the newest CPU in their phones, so that they "rank better" ... on price comparison sites ... or to give salesmen a simple reason to sell "this phone over that one".
Apart from that, it doesn't make sense at all. We have Apple and Samsung as the big players. The others come up with something different every now and then. Due to their "always the newest hardware strategy", they either produce the same products as everyone else, or they kill their darlings by dropping them like a hot, half-arsed potato. In the end, only the price tag determines which phone will sell. And Moto has no way to compete against "true Chinese brands" in that respect.
Even worse, some of those "crappy Chinese brands" actually do offer more regular updates and longer support...
It's a shame that no one in the business has balls (or a uterus) and does something extraordinary and stand out from the crowd.
We got 2 OS updates on on this phone and security patches also have been coming through, what is the rant about?.... Google itself promises 2 years of updates, so we are at par with that philosophy, not behind... Infact even after releasing so many new phones after the z play, they have not forgotten it, is commendable no?

Exactly.
It got the same amount of updates as a flagship. What else do you want? Do you think Samsung is going to give Android P to Galaxy S7 users or what? You're also up to date with security patches. I can't see another big brand updating their mid-range as long as Motorola did.
OS updates end here but they will continue to provide security patches if they want. Most people upgrade after 2 years anyway.
Sorry, that is pure whataboutism. The notion that other companies don't support their products doesn't make it acceptable in any way.
I am not concerned about not getting Android P, but I would like to have Oreo supported with security fixes.
Apart from that, you really are satisfied with two years of support?! You are any phone manufacturers dream customer!
I bought my MZP in 2017, when it was still a decent phone. Therefore I got only 1 year of support. Not very impressive in my opinion.

This is another good point. We compare to other manufacturers who have super short support spans and think Motorola is doing great. None of them provide much support because they want us to buy new devices. The whole system is designed to keep people paying for new phones and stuck in expensive plans (at least in Canada it's that way). We're so happy they throw us a few crumbs we forget they're sitting at a feast, for an analogy.
Not meaning to be too negative, the phone we have works great I think. Looking at the big picture though, we're just consumers to them in the end.
I hope treble changes things up, there's hope.

Well let's see
1) whataboutism ; while it was alluded to and I don't endorse bringing others down but peers are the natural reference point , apples to apples right !
2) 1 year support and the 2 year debate: this one is a totally different discussion. I guess the topic is a rant against Motorola , so we are debating if Motorola did good or not. But the 2 year update issue is a different issue. From Google itself there is an ownership deficit with andoid, they don't feel responsible enough for it, like say apple does for iOS. In the name of open source, they have gotten away with a lot of accountability. If today Google owns up and pushes OEMs, things can change drastically, but they won't because they are happy spreading the Google ecosystem everywhere.
3) buying new phones ; this is a value debate ie did you get enough value for the money you paid, I would say a resounding yes for this phone. Well pixels and iphones have 3 yr or 5 yrs support but the damage accordingly is nuclear to the pocket
<rant>The Moto Z Play now has the April 2018 security patch along with Oreo. Motorola has not said there will be no more updates to it. It was just the musings of some blogger who happened to make assertions without any evidence. I for one enjoy the battery life of the Z Play but prefer the Z2 Play because the carrier version has an FM radio and has more built-in storage and RAM. It also has WiFi calling for T-Mobile.
I buy the Z phones primarily because of the MODS. That is what makes these phones special. Try adding battery on any other phone as elegantly? Not possible. Perhaps they will be releasing a Hi-Fi DAC mod for the Z3 Play which could give better performance than you can get inside the phone. At least with the MOD system that is possible. If they make it 64-Bit then it will probably be a part of the Android Enterprise Recommended program which the Z2 Force is a part of, and that allows for Android security updates within 90 days of release from Google, for a minimum of two years.
I would rather all the people who don't see the value of the mods buy some other phone because any manufacturer can put a bigger battery on a phone, but no one else has created a platform that allows for elegant extensions and upgrades. You can slap on a mod and get 5G service. How many other phones out here now can be 5G ready so easily? If you read about the mod documentation you will see that they are innovating in the hardware area.</rant>
@kingstu, very well stated and totally agree, love the mods and the elegant implementation, true value add
