claim on this phone model. I hope someone form HTC would be
reading this forum so please let me also write this message to them.
Dear HTC,
mostl of us already know, HD2 screen is extremely fragile,
made of tiny glass, and we all have to keep care with it.
I did, I read what happened to other users before of me,
and I always was careful in handling it. Almost I thought it up to
few weeks ago.
Accidents are non predictable and it happened to me that HD2 has fallen from the bed down on the parquet and broke its screen in a hundreds of pieces. As for the other the phone was still working but unusable.
My first though was it is my fault, I had to be more careful, but after a while a really do not understand why a phone should be so fragile. It was really the first fall of the phone and the height was really short (about 30cm)
Why your phone should not have to pass at least a 30cm fall test.
Probably this should have been a condition to prevent selling phones to unacquainted customers. But this is not the case for HD2.
But the incredible thing had still to come, after checking the cost for replacement parts on the web (from 25 to 50 euros) I send the phone to HTC repair and now it is coming back with a bill of 220 Euro.
I have to say that this policy is regrettable, the cost for the repair is more than 1/3 of the cost of the whole device, and about 10 times the cost of
the replacement, event if the cause of rupture is not to be fully charged to the responsibility of the customer.
Unfortunately I had a responsibility on this phone against my company and I had to pay the repair at any cost, but for no reason I should have done it if I was the proprietary of the phone.
I had tenths of mobiles before, and really this is the only one who broke at its first fall.
I am writing this message not only to claim about this unfair repair policy that is demonstrated by the overcharge applied from the assistance, but also to warn all those users like me that use this phone as a means of work and choose their phones on the technical specifications and rely to the quality of the producer.
I am surprised from HTC since I already had three mode HTC devices before of this, and neither experienced this fragility in their previous models. But, this was not the case for HD2. Its robustness do not respect even a poor standard.
Finally I wish to warn other forum users about the cost actually applied for repair.

I'm sorry that your screen broke and the repair was so expensive , but from first hand experience I can tell you the phone isn't as fragile as you describe it.A week back a friend of mine was playing ShootMe(game where you use accelerometer to simulate different guns) and the phone slipped off his hand(around 1m height) and slided for around half a meter on a parquet floor.I rushed to pick it up , ready to shed some manly tears for my 1 week old phone , but when I picked it up there was nothing except some dust(I had invisible shield so that probably saved it from scratching).Needless to say after that incident I got a pouch .Anyway , I'm not saying it is not fragile , it is ,just not to the extend you are describing or maybe I was lucky?
I can't imagine an HD2 suffering any damage falling 30cm onto a wood floor. I dropped mine recently over a meter onto the pavement, resulting in only small marks in the plastic.

I guess it strongly depends on the angle of impact with the floor, it it goes down with the back then could be ok, but if, such as in my case it impact from one edge, it does not match the height, the display will break.
I can clearly see on my display the the point of impact along the edge from where the break started, and I repeat in that case it was only 30 cm high.
I guess you have been really lucky in your episode, since mine was the first fall first break actually I experienced 100% fragility.
I had read alot of similar happenings before thinking I was alone and decide to write.

... and actually I am seriuosly thinking to send it back, I have a work always on the go, and this is a risk too high in case of continuous travels.

I bought mine unlocked, paid alot. Ins. was 85.00 for 2 yrs against water,screen, pretty much everything. I have dropped mine twice from 1m,no damage. I do have it in piel frama Imagnum case. Both times it landed on corner. Sorry for your lose,,,Quig

Last night the same thing happened like it happened to OP, my hd2 felt from my bed into the wooden floor. I was ready to cry after it felt but for my surprise it wasn't even scratched at all. While taking it out of under bed it got some little scratches on the screen protector but no scratch on the phone itself or any other visible damage.
I will agree with OP here, it all depends on the angle of the fall.
Mine fallen from approx 1.5m onto concrete tiles. Case in the corner got scratched, but the display/touchscreen survived it. It was 30cms only indeed? Amazing

yeah, it always depends on where exactly your hd2 falls... same with the gayPhones...

Did you had also the LCD repaired for that price?
The price for reparation of mine was only the capacitive Glass cover

But the previous Sony flagship phones, namely the Z, Z1, Z1C & Z2 have a very serious manufacturing defect - self cracking screens. the glass panes on the front and the back of these phones crack due to overheating (sometimes without overheating). there have been cases where the owners went to bed with their phones on a table and woke up to find that the phone had cracked. the problem seem to lie with the glass and metal construction. due to the waterproof and dustproof construction ,there isn't any proper heat dissipation, and since aluminum and glass react differently to heat, the glass cracks(in some cases even the display below it). Sony continues to deny the defect, usually blaming the user for the cracked glass and the users have to pay for the new screen(~$200-$300)
so back to the Z3 and Z3C, they have the same construction. so I am worried. if i do buy ,then I have to buy the phone unlocked ,which will set me back by $600( I am from India, no contracts here).
So what are your thoughts on this issue, and is there anybody who has faced this issue before?

Coming from the XZ, I know the stories. In my opinion you shouldn't be worried. The chance that a screen cracks without ANY reason is less then 1%, many times something hit people's screen without realizing. In the 1.5 years that I've had my XZ I have dropped my phone (on purpose) many times, without anything happening. People also removed the anti shatter screen, which results into bigger chance that the screen will crack.
I don't blame Sony for giving the fault to the consumer, it's not like Sony doesn't test their products before releasing them. If Sony gave everyone a new phone after they said that it cracked without a reason, guess what everyone would do.... Claim that the screen cracked without a reason just to get a new phone/screen.
(Why do you have to pay 600$ for the phone btw? You can just buy it cheaper at sites like Clove/Handtec and get the same insurances.)

well that's some relief. from what I've heard sony have removed the anti-shatter layer from their new phones. as for paying $600, I don't know whether I'll get warranty on the phone in India, if i buy from handtec or clove

You will, but the two year warranty will remain in the UK. In other words, if something goes wrong, you have to send it back to them to take a look at and repair Made sure I checked that, as this is my first online purchase of a mobile phone

Yeah that's right. It's also my international perchance when it comes to phones, but from what I've understood that if there is something actually wrong with the phone, you'll only have to pay the shipping costs and of course not the repair costs. Unless it was your fault.

I always buy my Sony phones outside the US, have had warranty covered in US every time I needed to.

Do you play games or run apps that are processor intensive? Did you set the phone down on a cool flat surface such as a glass table or kitchen counter after using it? - This was a big issue for Nexus 4 back glass. Cold surface + warm phone = cracked backs

I was really close to pulling the trigger on one from Clove to USA and even called to have them do a pre-check on phone before sending to me so I can be sure to get a good set of speakers, no dead pixels etc. they charge about $ 30 for this service
Now,I am on hold on Z3 C .
IF I can put screen protectors tempered glass front and back and put it in a really
good case-will I be able to use it in an active lifestyle in front pocket for a year or so...and be reasonably certain no broken screen.?
There was no cold and hot involved with my phone. It was maximum in my jacket pocket. Really no abuse or other non standard use.
Also I think tempered glass would not help in this case. The glass would break under it as well.
I am hoping to get it fixed cause I want this phone badly. It is the only one I like now for features/form factor ratio.
I wish they get a root soon too. Would like to see MIUI on this phone.

My $0.02... I have a Z1C that developed a severe set of cracks. Until reading this thread, I had a suspicion that it "happened on its own" but couldn't really believe it; so I attributed it to some unknown abuse on my part. I'm still skeptical, but I'm confident no outside force hit the screen so I'm tending to believe it was a case of spontaneous cracking (perhaps due to heat?).
It's off to Sony USA for evaluation. I'll be pleasantly surprised and impressed with Sony if they cover it under warranty. One other note: I purchased it from Clove UK, but Sony USA had it in their database and offered no protest.
Whether warrantied or not, I am disappointed by their repair policy. It would be nice to cross-ship a replacement so I am not un-phoned for two weeks, but, alas, no. So, I pulled the trigger on a Z3C (which normally would not be compelling enough for me to upgrade) which should be here Monday. And I'll pass the repaired Z1C on to one of the kids.
I've had the Z1 for about a year. It's fallen a number of times from 4 feet or so on to a ceramic tile floor. I've got a Devilcase aluminum bumper on the phone. The corners of the Devilcase are all dented and chewed up, but there are no cracks in the glass. I just got the Z3 compact, and I'm hoping for as good of luck with it.
less than a week
So I've had my new shiny Z3 less than a week and have a hairline crack all the way across the top right hand corner of the screen and the touch does not work above the crack, no abuse, I don't keep it in a pocket it could be sat on in, it was fine in the morning when I was killing time before work playing games, on the desk next to me all day at work and then when I went to look at it when I finished it has this mystery crack.
I'm sending to Sony under the warranty to see if they will repair this obvious design defect as some of my research on the net suggests they will and will update this thread with the result

I too want this phone and it is available (cheapest) in ebay India for around 38k, but now incidents of self cracked screens are troubling me!
Thought id post here about my Xperia Z3 and how things went from great to worse. Bought the phone last November here in Finland and was a happy little peasant with a brand new phone. Loved the phone but quite early on I think i managed to break the back glass myself (?). I didn't drop it, it just cracked... The phone was denied warranty back then due to mechanical preassure (saying it's my own fault it cracked). Well that was no biggie as it was just the back cover and it didn't make hte usability of the phone any worse than it was. And it may as well be that I've broken it myself, not being carefull enough. Picture #1, #2, #3. Sorry for the poor quality, but as you can see there's no damage on the sides indicating it being dropped, but still it could be my own fault.
Fast forward half a year and I noticed that my phone had a yellow tint on it's display right next to the micro-usb port. I took the phone for warranty and waited a few weeks. The local service company denied warranty due to improper use of the device quoting the phone being bent, cracked rear cover and the LCD screen glue being broken. I was really surprised and I hadn't noticed the bending or the glueing being an issue. Received the pictures and it indeed was bent and the lcd screen glue was torn. Still, the phone wasn't mishandled in any way, well it did drop a few times but nothing major.

Well there's no denying those pictures. To be honest, I would have expected the phone to not bend (keep it in my front pocket) and havn't taken the phone with me to sports or anything like that. So my phone was denied warranty as all damage to the phone was not due to poor build quality but to improper usage of the device. Took the phone to my local reseller where I bought the phone for consumer complaint as I couldn't have in any way be held accountable for the LCD screen defect or the poor glue. Bending ok, mayby... but still think this is a little bit far fetched and the rear cover i can definately be held accountable for. But the screen? Really? The service center said that the phone would need to be replaced completely. Sony official response was that it's not due to build quality issues but to damage caused by improper use of the device. They stood behind the service center and device is officially out of warranty now.
Well I did order spare parts and replace the LCD screen glue myself, and the back cover was held tight but the LCD screen wasn't. I managed to almost pull out the complete screen without heating it up first. As a result the glue came off in a wierd way as seen in the picture here. I really doubt the way the screen was glued could be my fault and has to be an manufacturing error.
Anyway, this is my story with my Xperia Z3 phone. Now i'm stuck with a faulty LCD screen that has burnt yellow tint close to the micro-usb port and it's a really ****ty way to keep the phone for another 12 months or so untill it's paid off (24months payment). TL: DR: Phone denied warranty (yellow tint on LCD, LCD gluing broken, bent phone and cracked rear glass. Last two might be my fault, but the first two couldn't be. Warranty service and Sony claim i've caused all damange to phone. Can't say i agree
they are right... NO ONE would approve warranty when there is physical damage....
They always have to prove that the defect you want them to repair was caused by you. So physical damage is not always enough for them to reject a warranty repair.
In this case, however, I can easily imagine both defects being caused by you bending the phone, so I'm not that surprised they denied your claim...
Whatever. I spent ~$160 fixing my phone. Both sides glass broken and phone unusable. Under std warranty (bought through expansys-usa.com) sent to sony/texas, waited about 3 weeks (forever) and rcvd a brand new phone back. Back is once again cracked. I will say this. Unless a proper case comes out, I won't be buying any more sonys. The best hard case now is the lovemei ($35) imo. Carrying case? Maxpedition TC-2. With a lovemei case get a TC-3.
I have the Z3 since it came out, bought it right at release. Only use a soft case, always have it in my front pocket. It's with me when I ride my bike and I took pictures of the kids in the water. So far no issues, except two bright spots in the lower part of the screen. So far I've been too lazy to get it repaired/exchanged.
Same for me too. 5 months old and its the 3rd time I sent it to Sony because of warranty.
Screen cracked for no reason.
The reasons before were Bluetooth not working and battery dieing.
Definitely my last Sony.

Screen cracked for no reason, strange...maybe it is not cracked at all...maybe you have some sort of hallucination when you look at it, and it happens only to you and only when you look at it...

No front or back cracks or damage for me yet. I got mine back in March and installed tempered glass on the front which I broke the other day. The only issue I have is yellowing around the soft keys caused by me I think. Front pocket and I basically do parkour at work as a residential window cleaner I jump a lot of gates and fences everyday. To be perfectly honest I'm surprised the phone is still in 100% condition on the outside. [emoji12]

The point was that they pinned all of the damage on me and claimed I was responsible for the poor glue used with the LCD screen and the screen errors as well while I could in no way have done that damage by using the device. And I really doubt a cracked back cover and the slight bending could cause either of the problems with the screen. The idea was to share how it went down and perhaps to be of use to someone. Seems though it won’t be so let this post be buried.
Sure I’m a little bit surprised a device could even bend and thought it was just something that would happen if deliberately done. Never had that with any previous phone from any manufacturer. I will buy smaller phones next time or sturdier ones so I can keep them with me. Not saying it’s a common problem as it surely isn’t, just going to make different desisions in the future.
It seems there is no end to the z5 misfortunes. For me, it's like 5 min I decide to order the compact, then I read another piece of bad news. Then I think it can't be that bad and what other choice of compact waterproof phone do I have, then I read another piece of bad news, and so on. Anyway, Verge reports a cracked back panel. Looks just like my z3 compact.

Its normal you hear all this negative stuff because first thing that people do is when they find something negative and see if the problem can be fixed. When the phone is working fine those people dont care to write a topic or comment.

That's very true but it also doesn't mean that it is not happening often. There were lots of reports with the z3 series. I was hoping that this spontaneous crack issue would be solved

Although in this case it is unclear if it was spontaneous or not. He reports that he has an iPhone dock with metal edges on his desk and wonders if the phone might have landed partly on it at a bad angle.
Mind, cracks should still not happen even under such conditions. But it is something different than cracking on its own - this you can at least try to prevent by being careful and/or using a case.
O course, IMO a glass back is still a workbook example of form over function. I much much rather have a "non-premium" plastic back and not having to worry about the back side breaking than the reverse situation.

Yea dont know why they like to bash on sony while it could be a user that doesn't know his stuff. We all know them people at the verge are never happy with a phone unless its a iphone.
well, we had bend gate with an iphone and we have glass gate with z5c - its food for haters

Or it could be a real issue. It certainly was with the Z3c. I quite often do not agree with the reviews on verge, but automatically disqualifying something because it is posted on that site is a bit too much like fanboyism for me.
Also, someone who is "putting a phone on a table so it accidentally lands at a bad angle on another object" is for me very much not "a user that doesn't know his stuff". Sorry, but a phone which cannot take *that* without getting damaged simply has a design error.
Lets wait an see. It could be an isolated incident or it could be like with its predecessor something relatively common. I for my part will wait till at least Christmas before I but a Z5c. I really want for it to succeed - because if it doesn't we can probably say goodbye to any good android phones sub-5" - but I won't buy it if I have to be afraid it gets damaged each time I do not handle it with kids gloves.
I'm definitely a Sony Xperia fan boy. I love the compacts. I wish they would make compact waterproof phones forever. But even I confess the z3 compact cracked back panel was not just a Crackgate. It was very much real. I really hope it won't be an issue for my soon to order z5 compact.

And i got my z5c today to replace my z3c and i love it! The fingerprint scanner is such a win!

Carrying boxes, slipped from thigh height onto cement and now looks like a bomb site.
Spiderweb cracks across half the back, glass splinters coming out everywhere.
I know concrete = bad but at least my RAZR m I'm writing from survived that for over a year, including concrete drops, before I put a case on it.
But Christ that back glass is anything but tough.
For the love of god either have insurance or put a case on it. This phone is slippery in any circumstance and one hard surface will ruin your day.
Hoping Sony will be helpful with repairs when I call tomorrow.

be happy its just the back tho because the back is easy to replace.
My z5c back just broke.
Took it in my hand. Did nothing.
Heard a click and there it was.
The upside of glass its alot more scratch resistance from plastic even from aluminium
the down side is more sensitive to high heat\cold changes and hits can stutter it more easily

1. Where exactly can I get my hands on the original Sony back cover? Even though I am willing to pay Sony in the US to have it replaced, they are telling me they don't have availability to perform out-of-warranty work. They'll call me when they have availability. (Huh?!?)
2. Is the glass back itself part of the waterproofing membrane? When I watched the tear down video of the Z5C, it appears that there is a plastic membrane on the inside surface of the glass back. My basic inquiry is if the shattered back glass in itself renders the phone non-waterproof, or if it is still waterproof?

1. Try Ebay. In europe they are around 10€, much cheaper if you order them from china, however i don't think they are all original. Look for the SONY logo in the middle of the glas.
2. I would say yes. The membrane you saw is probably the adhesive of the back panel https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Parts/Sony-Xperia-Z5-Compact-Back-Cover-Adhesive/IF312-102 if the glas is broken inside the adhesive it should be no more waterproof.
However you can test it by yourself:

Thanks, but I am afraid to order from eBay, because based on seller reviews, there were many people complaining that they either did not get the item after purchase, or the NFC won't work. Many of the sellers blur/censor out the Sony mark. Not quite sure why, but it makes me think that these are not original items.

Never had problems on ebay, sometimes on aliexpress. But till now, everytime when the order didn't arrive, i got a full refund without any problem. So i think it worth a try.
Of course when a seller blur out the logo its normally a bad sign and i would look for another dealer.
Hi all!
A couple of weeks ago, my phone slipped from my laps. I was sitting in a couch and tried to reach the table with the phone resting outside my pants and the inclination of the body made it slip to the floor, hitting it on the side (left side if I remember well) and a bit inclined like this: /_ (the / is the phone and the _ is the floor ). The fall heigth was very low, like 40 cms.
The external glass break in a single line and the touch sensor doesn't work higher than that line
The weird thing is that the glass didn't broke directly when hitting the ground, it broke less than one minute later while using it (checking if it worked correctly). I sensed it in the hand while using the screen, so it seems that the glass got weakened and broke after a ver small amount of pressure.
In the store where I took it to be repaired they told me that Sony tends to put the touch sensor very close to the glass to improve the sensivity, making it very typical to break when the glass breaks like this.
I'm writing this to encourage you all to buy a case, because altough I don't like cases, I was planning to buy it just after the new year because the phone is too slippy, and it broke before that
I'm attaching a picture of the phone.
P.S: Remember that if the touch sensor breaks, you can always plug a USB mouse using a USB OTG adapter and reboot the phone, and at least you will be able to save everything

I can't remember how many times I dropped my sg note 4, and after every drop I was sure I'll buy a case (well I did) but the point is, now I realize how durable was this device...
My z5p is with front/back glass protectors + ugly tpu alum like case.. (Seems Sony and all case manufacturers can't find out how badly this device needs a pretty nexus 4 like boarder bumper)
Sorry to hear that, but as you say, your cautionary tale proves the benefits of having Tempered Glass screen protectors and a case. Not sure if the Tempered Glass would be good in that situation since your phone impacted at a sideways angle but always good to have fitted, just in case.
I typically always buy Glass screen protectors and wallet cases, the case serves a purpose and also adds some extra protection.

Today it happened to me as well unfortunately. The phone slipped from my grip as I entered in my car. Just like yours, a line appeared and it ****ed up the touch sensor. Have you changed your display after that? If so, did you use the Sony service or some random repair shop?

Hi!
Yesterday I forgot to answer, sorry.
I took it to the store where I bought it, which takes all the Z series directly to Sony official service because they do not have the ability to fix them.
It costs 200€ :s, but I wanted an official repair because it is still under warranty, and as it happened at Christmas and the phone was very new in the market, there were no other alternatives than taking it to the official service. The store didn't even have a pre-calculated price for this model, just up to Z3.
At least, as the accident happened in a friends house, his assurance company finally paid for the repair
