Intermittently with the the Gmail app I will go hours without receiving any email notifications, and it often isn't until I get a notification on my iPad that I even think to check the phone to see emails from the day before! Apparently there's a bug report in the tracker, but I was wondering if there was any kind of workaround you guys have tried. This is a crippling bug for me.

I was having the same problem, but after performing a factory reset sync started working again. Then shortly after, I installed the January security update... no problems since.
I've had problems after the December update. Finally had to disable "battery optimization" for gmail. That fixed my sync issues. I got real irritated by getting email notification hours or even a day late

Under main settings go to battery, then in the 3 dots menu click "battery optimization" and then you will see a drop down arrow. Select all apps and then scroll down to gmail and turn of "optimization"
I might have to try the above. I wasn't able to use the phone much today, but when I came home, my PC showed 19 emails on Gmail. NONE of them appeared to sync on the app & I had no clue I had this many, or any for that matter. This has been a persistent issue for about a month or so.
The above settings didn't seem to do anything for me. I just got 20 emails in from 6am this morning until now. I wonder if using inbox by google produces the same issues.

Interesting. It's quite the annoying problem. I've had only 1 time with delayed notifications since turning off doze for gmail. I did read that it has not worked for some. I periodically turn airport mode on and then off.... At least once a day just to make sure I'm getting my messages
Guys its not about battery optimized..its about new gmail apk.either move to inbox by google or go.to settings of gmail under notifications sound vibrate etc u ll see notify in every message or u can choose once a day once a week or a month to take notifications.. U can thank me later ?

Thats not the actual problem though. Ive always had that box unchecked with all my phones because i would get a message (be alerted) deal with that message allowing gmail to then alert me of the next message.
All checking that box is gonna do is if Gmail fails to notify you of the 1st message but then trys once you receive the 2nd or 3rd etc you will be alerted.
Needless to say i am also having the problem.
Appears this is a known problem with Nexus devices (probably a combo of Nexus/Marshmallow)
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/Ayd_1TOemSE
Hopefully its only the app that needs tweaking and not the OS itself so we dont have to wait forever and a day for the update.

That's NOT the problem. Mine are checked for every message and I still had delays.... Until I turned off optimization. And even that hasn't 100% fixed it.
Turning off optimization also fixed it for me. It gets stuck in doze I think. Google still has some bugs to work out.
Looks like the problem was server side and a fix is being rolled out

It's better than it used to be. But still doesn't refresh in doze at times. Lots of stuff breaks during doze it seems lol. Nice feature but buggy. Android will always have some new buggy feature though. Been that way since I joined Android in the eclair days.

Ive noticed in the past few days my GMail has been delayed for about 3-4 hours from the time it way received, till it is pushed over to my device, anyone else experiencing this?
Check your sync settings.
also check settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>enable always-on mobile data.
if it's off push gmail can be substantially delayed.

I've noticed this as well. I've double checked all my settings and mine are correct. I'm guessing maybe it could be something on gmail's side of things and hopefully they will get it worked out.
Also make sure you're not using an auto task killer and killing the google talk app. You don't need to be signed into it, but killing it does delay google voice and gmail. BTW I'm not having any issue with my gmail, or google apps account. All coming through just as fast or faster than the websites.
Hi all,
Has anyone else noticed a significant delay with push notifications (namely with gmail)?
I've got my old iPhone and the Nexus 6P side by side, and at best the push notifications come in 10 seconds later than the iPhone (sometimes it can take up to 10 minutes). I've tried the push notification fix as suggested for other phones, but got no love there.
Any suggestions?

I just realized gmail only does push.
I just tested it on my Nexus 6p and it pushed a few seconds after the email was sent. At first however I had to manually refresh for the first test email, then the second test email pushed to the device.
I tested by sending a email from a icloud account on my macbook and sending to my gmail account on my phone.

It's almost as though there's some power saving feature going on once you lock the screen (this is where the delay happens, when locked).

Same here, seems strange that it's taking so long then...
Also, when deleting an email from the notification, it just keeps popping back up (i.e. not deleting). There's obviously some strange sync issue going on with gmail and exchange
I've had the same problem and haven't found a solution either. Glad to see that I'm not the only one! I posted on Reddit, but it didn't get much play. https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/3seyj6/delayed_gmail_syncnotifications/
To try and fix the issue, I've (in no particular order):
Removed my Google account and readded
Gone through Gmail settings to make sure that notifications are on, sync is active, managed labels
Gone through the Google account to make sure that Gmail sync is on
Restarted
Uninstalled updates to Gmail from the Play Store
Reinstalled updates to Gmail from the Play Store
Force Stopped Gmail
Cleared data from Gmail
Cleared cache from Gmail
Removed it from optimized apps
Changed my password on computer, then waited for phone to ask to reinput
I'm on a 64 GB Aluminum, unlocked, MDB08M. I do not have my SIM card yet (only Wi-Fi). Perhaps that's the issue?
I'm getting to the point where I'm going to factory reset, but I was really hoping I wouldn't have to, and I'm not optimistic it would help.

Yeah I've done the factory reset already and can confirm it does nothing. I'm beginning to think its the Gmail app, as the rest of my push notifications are faster or the same speed as iOS. Really crap by the Gmail devs if that is the case.
Any decent replacement email apps out there? The Samsung email app was quicker, but not sure if we can get that without rooting and flashing an apk (and even then not sure if it requires touchwiz to function).
With my 6P Hotspoting to tablet and pc email arrives on 6P a minute or 2 after them.
I don't know if this is the same or not. I have this issue with both the Yahoo mail app and the Outlook app. My gmail notifications seem to be showing up reliably, but I never get any Outlook notifications, and Yahoo's are sporadic--one our of every three or four. When I open either app, it then seems to go fetch the incoming emails. On my previous phone, when I open the app, they're already there. I don't believe I have anything set differently in the apps. I would love to figure this out.
So, I did a factory reset and installed nothing but Outlook and Yahoo mail. Then I sent two notes to my Outlook, Yahoo, and Gmail addresses, and all three of each note arrived almost simultaneously. I guess, now, I'll start re-installing essential apps and testing.
Was looking around and saw someone posted on the official Nexus forums; if anyone here is still having the issue, please head over and +1/reply so Google can escalate the fix.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/Ayd_1TOemSE
I'm having the same issue and I've also noticed that IMs on Hangouts are ridiculously slow. You would think that Google would make sure that at least their own apps worked smoothly on their flagship device.
I think I may have solved my sync issues. In the WiFi advanced settings, I switched the WiFi frequency band from Auto to 2.4Ghz. Ever since I did that I've received notifications on my Nexus 6P just as quickly as I do on other devices.
Wow, glad I saw this thread. I've been noticing gmail is slow lately. I thought it might have been my ROM/Kernel combo. I use Inbox and it was fine up until lately. Guess it's a bug for Google to fix. I even spent time last night reflashing stock and starting fresh out of box state.
This is happening to me too..happens on gmail and as well as Google opinion rewards. It's been happening for a little over a week now...hopefully will be fixed soon..
Is it happening to everybody or just a select lucky few?

Lots of users having this issue
http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/0...syncing-issues-in-gmail-inbox-and-other-apps/
I see that lot of people are only discussing about Gmail and other mailing or hangout apps.
I on the other hand am seeing overall notification push delay across all the apps including Whatsapp, Gmail, Facebook etc. I am unrooted and no changes made whatsoever to my android marshmallow. It is also on latest OTA build.
I receive all notifications as soon as I unlock the device, but if my device is lying on a table (even when not in doze mode which means lying for less than 30 minutes) I still don't receive any notification. As soon as I unlock and turn on screen it seems like data connectivity resumed and all notifications starts to flow within 5-10 seconds without even opening those apps to refresh.
I also have not modified any other notification setting and I even tried to keep whatsapp to priority mode + no battery optimization, still Whatsapp is having hard time receiving notification if screen is turned off for more than 5 minutes..
If you are experiencing this kind of an issue and have successfully resolved it, kindly help me.
I've lost email notifications but I have read that Google know about the problem,

I noticed that I'll get an email notification, then look at the notification on my lock screen. If I don't open it, and just turn the screen off again, I'll get repeat notification sounds every 10 mins for the same email message. Its especially bad when im listening to something in the car or at work and I can't immediately swipe away the notification. I want to turn this repeat notofication off because its really annoying, but I can't figure out how. Anyone know??

I know it's been a while, but did you ever figure this out? I just added some work alerts to my Gmail account and this has been driving me nuts - it's great to have it alert me every 10 minutes all night long that something happened for 1 minute at 2AM, but I'd love to be able to make it stop. It only does it for Gmail for me, not for my Exchange account that's also configured in the Gmail app.

Okay, so MAYBE... maybe some useful information on this?
I went into the Gmail settings online - through the Gmail web interface. I saw that IMAP was enabled, and I disabled that there. After that, any emails that came into Gmail seem to only notify me once, as expected.
So, I can't say that's 100% the absolute solution, but if your problem was in Gmail, it's something to try?

Ok so this doesn't seem to work for me. I still get the repeat notifications at seemingly random intervals. Just out of curiosity, do you have POP enabled or disabled? Also, don't we need IMAP enabled to be able to access emails from another email client (i.e. the Inbox or Gmail app)?
I have POP disabled as well.
You don't need IMAP enabled for the Gmail app. Other apps maybe - I guess it depends on how they talk to your Gmail account. I thought it needed to be enabled for the mail client on my Windows 10 machine to talk to it, but it's still working with IMAP off, so I guess not?
Hi all,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but u couldn't find a relevant forum... On my 6p my Gmail all is not pushing email notifications through to me live a they come. I am having to open the app up and then pull down to refresh the app and then they will all appear.
If I leave it long enough eventually they will all come through. For example the other day I left it too see what would happen on a weekend day and at around 4pm my email went from nothing to flooded with emails going back as far as 5am.
If I use inbox it works fine but I prefer the Gmail app. I have even gone to the lengths of factory resetting my phone to see if that helps but it didn't.
Does any one know a fix for this please? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try going to "App Notifications" and select "Priority"
For me, it needed to be whitelisted in the battery optimization menu. It seems like doze or app standby is killing the app.

It's funny, I can't seem to get mine to update the main account on the phone but every other account on the app sends push notifications. My work and school emails actually notify me of emails but my Gmail account just wont work...
I been noticing the same thing on my 6p looks like once you open Gmail it starts pushing after that.

Tried that and no change. The only push notifications are if I sign out and then sign in to another phone!
My Gmail (v6.01....) was working perfect until I updated to the lastest build (MHC19I), then Gmail stopped pushing notifications. I read on the google forums in the link posted above that reverting back to Gmail version 5.7... would fix this problem and it did. So, I turned off auto-updates for Gmail and will remain on version 5.7 until Google fixes this issue.
Has anyone else been having any issues with this? I seem to only be able to get new mail when I manually check the app.
I've tried:
making sure sync is enabled
clearing gmail app cache
clearing google app cache
turning off power saving mode
deleting/adding my gmail account
uninstalling/updating the app
I put my old phone on the same wifi network as my new S8 and the old phone gets the push notifications. This makes me feel like it's not an issue with the google account, but rather some setting on the phone.
I'm in the same boat here and I have no idea what to do and I need them push notifications. If some one comes up with a solution about please I've done everything what the main posts says also
Not sure if you only have the issue on wifi, but roaming is turned off by default which might explain the behaviour on 4g. Gmail itself works fine for me. Did you enable the notifications in the phone settings?

I have emails that are hours late that don't even notify me unless I manually refresh
I removed my 3 gmail accounts
Then added them back
I am now receiving push mail from 2 email accounts
The third one, I haven't receive emails yet today, so cannot say if push is working or not.
i done everything now, i reset my network settings even, it worked for about a day after that, and now it does not work again, any ideas guys i am missing lots of emails. Have 2 s8's in the family both have the same problem (EU variant here)
When you get new phone it's better to fresh install apps rather than transfer over. Reduces issues I've found in past.

Try putting gmail in Not optimized Apps (menu in battery usage)
I was having this issue myself and then i discovered that the Notification for Gmail had been turned off. Might not help every one but to check it
LONG PRESS GMAIL>APP INFO>Scroll down to App Settings
It kept turning back off so I had to turn it on and then back all the way to home and reboot for it to stick. Hope this helps!

This is not new issue. I've had the same on SGS7e and didn't find a solution. This is why I've moved to "Inbox by Gmail", successor of "Gmail".
It's almost the same, even better than Gmail. Let it try guys, you won't be disappointed.
Issue here also... Anyone tried turning off battery optimization for the app?
I resolved this by removing the accounts, then adding them back.
had the same problem for the past 2 or 3 days. it originally was working fine. I checked every setting known to man, and it magically started working again.
I was originally not getting any push notifications but also realized that it was showing "queuing" everytime i sent an email so there was definitely an issue with it pushing things out too
