My mom recently called complaining that her device was malfunctioning and they replaced her handset, she went through this process 3 times and at that point she said not to send her another phone, that she wanted a different phone. After many calls to customer service we finally got a hold of a really nice representative and she worked with her and she was able to "upgrade" to a Samsung Infuse which is MUCH nicer than the one she has now.
I had some legitimate issues with the Evo 4G, where my data connection would drop whenever I was inside a building, but as soon as I would get outside, or into the Sprint store, everything would run flawlessly. They kept telling me that there was nothing they could do because to them, it was working fine.. They told me, you can send your phone back for them to give you a new one, but that required me being without a Smart Phone for a week (which with my job, I use my Smart Phone everyday! I told them that was unacceptable) After many calls and complaints, I went into the store to get a new phone, where they informed me that there was a note on my account to let me get an early upgrade.
I think if you really want to get a different phone already, it might just be as simple as complaining that there is something wrong with your phone. However, they might want you to ship it back to have them give you a new phone of the same make (leaving you without a phone for a week or two) a few times before they even think about letting you get a different phone.
Try to find a legitimate flaw with your current phone, something that can't exactly be corrected, some seldom used feature that just doesn't work correctly, then complain like it's the end of the world
Okay so basically this is a question of what to do with a S4 that was shipped to my business. We received a S4 through fedex about a month ago that an old employee was suppose to receive at their home(now living out of state). We have had the phone for a month now and have asked fedex to take the phone back b/c they were suppose to pick it up and they always say they can not take it back without being told to do so by main office. The old employee did receive the phone he was suppose after calling at&t and telling them they sent the phone to the wrong address. Again this all happened a month ago and we now still have the phone. I was wondering how long(if there is a time length) before at&t forgets about the phone. Are we able to take the phone and use it as our own at this point.
What firmware does it have? I'd factory reset my old s4 and put my sim in the new one, given that it had anything older than MF3 installed...

I am not sure what firmware, it is at the office at the moment.
It has yet to be activated assuming it's new. Did you have to physically sign for the package from FedEx?

Well it is refurbished. It was sent with a new sim card as well. Yes, it was signed for by someone in the office.
Hmm.. If the owner hasn't made a big deal about it in 30 days, I'm sure there is a time period coming up that would leave you free to do what you like with the device. Maybe 90 days? You'll have to check with your local laws to be sure.

Well the owner had called at&t to tell them the phone was shipped to the wrong address and they overnighted him another one. At that point they said fedex would pickup the one sent to us(again this was a month ago). Another worker does already have an S4 and we put his sim in it yesterday and it worked.
I'd sell it. I'm sure the IMEI is on file somewhere with AT&T. You'll probably be fine with using it, but to be sure you could sell it and get a Nexus 5

Yes, I do not want to sell it though and then have at&t charge him for it once they see it being used in their system.

No, I was thinking of bringing it to the store and seeing what they say about it.
you're going to have to have the original buyer of this phone call customer care.
since it sounds as if it was purchased by a business acct or online, the store will not help.
business customer care, online sales, and store sales are separate.

No, it was not a business account that it was purchased under. It was done over the phone i believe when he did do it. but he already did contact att and all they told him was that fedex would pick up the phone(this was November 20th).

I had a similar situation with a company I worked for a few years back. I was the receiver and FedEx delivered a phone mistakenly to our business. The next day the FedEx driver was told about it, but said he couldn't take it back without approval. I called FedEx no less than 6 or 7 times about it until they finally told me just to keep it, they didn't want to deal with it. I thought about taking it home but had a funny feeling about it so I left it at work. About 3 weeks later, the FedEx driver asks me about it and tells me he is supposed to pick it up. I'm not sure if FedEx was finally told to return it or if the driver was tired of hearing about it and figured he would keep it for himself. I really didn't care. The point is that it isn't worth it. Call FedEx and make them take it back. Make sure you document it when they do. If someone starts asking questions about it, it is on them and not you.

Thank you for your input, that is actually why I did leave it at work. We did tell the driver about it probably 5 or 6 times over 4 weeks. I was actually not the one who signed for it but both the person it was suppose to go to and the person who signed for it do not care what is done with the phone so that is why I am on here asking about this situation. Thanks again.
At&t will eventually lock the imei due to lost/stolen phone. I wouldn't keep it as my own. Some states have low felony dollar amounts on theft. They can trace these phones and lock them down. I actually have this hunk of crap because I bought a wonderful tmobile s4 from a second hand store in austin. Worked great for 3 months. Unlocked bootloader and all the custom roms I could flash. Then one day the Internet stops. Call tmo and they say it's locked down due to non payment. I explained how I purchased the phone and they could care less. It was an expensive media player at that point. Thankfully, the store I purchased it at took it back and gave me this pos. I complain, I'm actually lucky as the Internet is filled with horror stories of buying from an individual and losing their phone and money. Anyway, don't be an ass. Give the phone back or throw it in the trash. Or, you could burn it in effigy in front of your local at&t store. Happy holidays.

I figured as much. It is just going to sit in the filing cabinet for now then.
That I go out and plunk down $600.00 for a new VZW S5 and out of the box it is of a newer version that can't be rooted?
(I have to buy full retail to keep un-limited data plan)
I should be able to power it up out of box prior to purchase to check version number? What ver should I be looking for or what to avoid like the plague?

It has nothing to do with when the phone was made. It has to do with the firmware of the phone and since the firmware version hasnt changed since the phone was rooted then you will be fine. It may not even make a difference when new firmware is released. It depends on if google fixes the loophole because its not just a samsung problem, its an android problem. The root works for most any android device. If you have been keeping up with you it, you would know that Google recently hired the guy, geohot, that found the root, so it is only a matter of time before it is fixed but it will take a long time to release new firmwares for every phone infected. This may never happen and it just may be fixed in new phone releases such as the note 4 or galaxy s 6.

Its simple just get the VZW Developer S5 if your going to buy it outright. So you can enjoy root and all that unlocked bootloader goodness. Here's the link for the Developer S5 http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/ET-G900VMKAVZW

Good point !! The only problem I envision I may encounter is the extended warranty. I bought the GNEX the week it hit the market and pay the 5 bux a month for the extended warranty. I drive a truck and am rough on phones. The charging port loosens up and quits working. I've already checked with VZW and they offer it on the standard S5. I am on my 5th GNEX over the years that they have over-nighted me at no cost with the warranty. I'm going to have to find out if I can get that on the dev edition.
Edit:Yeah I was afraid of that .... just got out of a chat session with VZW rep. To get the extended warranty I would have to buy the phone from VZW. They don't sell the dev edition, I would have to get it directly from Sammy and that only has the one year warranty. I didn't see anywhere on the sammy site to open a chat window to enquire about an extended warranty but I doubt it's available. Not to mention you have to send the phone in under their warranty terms and wait for a replacement. With VZW, they over-night a phone along with a paid return sticker and package and I have 10 days to return the broken phone. Can't go without my phone for weeks waiting for a replacement.
I've been running custom ROMS since my original MotoDroid and can't imagine going back to running stock. BUT !! I am grandfathered into the un-limited data plan and run the house off of the phones. Got rid of cable internet when they lit my town with 4G and I get 27.5m down and 18+ up.... So long as I can enable the wifi hotspot to broadcast, I guess I could live with a less than un-locked phone for now. Hoping in the future it will be.
You can get the warranty. When I was activating my phone I purchased online elsewhere the rep told me I could get it since they currently have "open enrollment" this was exactly a week ago. It's call back and all about it.

If VZW does not stock the dev edition, they aren't going to have a refurbed one on hand to replace mine with under the extended warranty. I can see what would happen now. Even if they sold me the extended warranty, if something happened and I had to get it replaced, the phone they will send out will be a standard consumer grade S5. I'll try another vzw rep but they were emphatic I must purchase from VZW to add the extended warranty to the phone.
Edit: just chatted with another rep and they told me yes I could get the ext warr when I activate phone. I mentioned how will they replace it if they don't stock it? rep's reply "good point" ... he agreed with me they would send out a consumer grade phone as a replacememt.

The rep probably had no clue. This is what they will do. The phone is exactly the same except for the dev has unlocked bootloader. So they will take an original refurb and rebrand it as a dev edition with unlocked bootloader and dev firmware. Its not that hard, just because we cant flash certain things doesnt mean they cant. You will get a refurb equal to what you bought. That simple.

Not exactly that simple. It is true, you get a refurb equal to what you bought if bought from VZW. They do not sell the dev edition and I was told since dev edition is un-locked it automatically voids any warranty that VZW would recognize/honor, since they do not sell un-locked phones. My only hope would be if Samsung sold an extended warranty, which they don't. I did verify, they are currently having an 'open enrollment' where you can warranty a phone bought from other than VZW, but the un-locked proviso is in place according to them. It was the store manager I talked this over with and he seems quite knowlegble. I've dealt with him for years.
Yes, I love ROM's have been flashing since my original moto-droid. But so long as I can activate tethering to run the house on the phone I'd be all right. Looking for an answer as to whether I can revert to full stock to be able to do a warranty exchange if I safestrap it ...
Woke up this am to a shiny new email from VZW about my N4 order. Not that it was shipped, but that it was canceled.
Anyone else get one of these? On the phone at the moment to find out why, currently on hold, don't think they know why.
That is ironic. I canceled my N4 preorder with VZW and they asked me twice, "Are you SURE you want to cancel it?". They zap yours without you even calling or asking you once.
Just got off the phone with them. Never did give me a reason, they just 'released' it and I should be getting info on when it should be shipped.
From what I've been reading on here, it may be going back unopened. Without root, I won't touch it. May go with the Nexus 6. Will hurt getting a phone without SD card support, and love the SPen, but root is more important.
While typing this, VZW just called me back and told me that the order cannot be released and that I will have to re-order it online.
They did me the same way I don't understand them
I am holding on to a .00000000001% hope that root will happen by November 1st, since the last day of the Best Buy $200 offer. No root by then, I will cancel that order too. No card writes is not an option for the apps I use.
Sad I have to base my decision not on the device, but Android's arrogant and blatant cattle prodding efforts of trying to kill sd cards. Nexus does not have them, so neither should other devices- in their minds.
Same thing happened to me. I ended up calling and they told me it was fraud because we ordered 4 high end phones and the same time (2 Iphone 6 64GB and 2 Note 4). They then had to recreate my preorder. Now i am sitting in limbo waiting for my tracking info.
BTW, those that had theirs canceled, did you order through Edge? MIne was through Edge.
Mine got zapped as well. Had to call them and re-order it using EDGE program as my contract wasn't up yet.
Thankfully it was early enough where I could still get it ordered and delivered on the 23rd.
I was not on edge, but I was going to have it on my bill.
I'm fine with the cancel now. I don't know what is going to happen with root. If they root it wonderful, but what happens if/when Lollipop comes to it?? I think I'm just going to shell out the cash and get the dev version.
Well, there goes my theory that there was a hiccup with the Edge orders. =p I'm just glad VZW was able to fix all the cancellations.
Just had 4 N4s handed to me that I have to setup for people here at work. I want one, but, if there is no root, wont be getting one.

I'm pretty confident that there will be root for this phone. Idk why people are so worried...bootloader is a different story

I think there was a version of the N2 that wasn't rootable, and from what I've heard (may be wrong as I don't care about the phone and never looked into it), the VZW S5 currently isn't rooted. Again, that may be wrong.
I think the phone will get root, but if it gets Lollipop it more than likely wont be rootable.
My order was canceled also when i called and complained they used some jump in line form to redo the order i should get it sometime today according to fed ex
S5 is rootable but boot loader is locked. Or at least last time I checked. Only reason I care about root is for Wi-Fi tether and foxfi fixed that.
Foxfi is important, but for me its more adwaway, titanium backup, Xposed, and xprivacy. Don't think I can use another phone wihout xprivacy.
My Verizon Pixel has the dreaded audio defect so I learned a lot today about how Google and Verizon are handling the manufacturer warranty. I think it warrants a post because I always wondered how that would be handled and now I (unfortunately) know.
1) If Verizon has the replacement in stock, they will replace it once they know Google has said it's okay to do so. This happens in store, so you walk out with a new phone. Verizon must process it through their system, though.
2) If Verizon does NOT have a replacement available (more than likely what I'll face when I go in), then Google will send you a replacement but it's their "standard replacement", meaning they won't ship until they get your old one (meaning you're out of a phone for two weeks).
This is pretty crappy in my opinion. They basically treat Verizon as just a "third party" as if you bought it ANYWHERE online. I'd think they would have a better agreement for their "exclusive carrier" in the US. They told me that some places will give you a loaner phone while you wait but didn't know if Verizon would. I'll find out and report back.
Worth noting: the lady I dealt with emailed me for evidence that I could show Verizon that they approved a replacement. It literally took 5 minutes on the phone with her, so she must have been VERY aware of the issue. I told her a factory reset was no good and that's about all it took.
EDIT: Sorry, wrong section. I don't know this happened. Mods, could you please move this to the discussion section? I'm having difficulty deleting this.
I know with Google you put down a deposit and they send you a replacement right away. Then get the money back later when you send your defective device.

With the "standard replacement", Google ships the replacement as soon as the tracking becomes active on your return. They don't tell you this, but it has been my experience and others. So if you send the phone back immediately, you are only out a phone a couple days.
My bosses phone died, took it to VZW and they mailed him a refurb replacement (maybe because they didn't have new ones in stock?). The refurb had a broken head phone jack... took it up with Google who offered to send him NEW in box replacement with the "standard replacement" terms. He got the shipping notification the same day he dropped the replacement in the mail.
Still a crappy experience, but it's all very YMMV and depends on the CSR you get at VZW or Google.

So Google was so wrong. Verizon will SHIP you a phone from their warehouse if it passes their inspection (mine did). So they are overnighting me one. Sounds great! But there's a huge "BUT" here...
Apparently they send you refurbished phones through Verizon. So I have no idea if I can unlock the bootloader but I highly doubt it. I'm probably not going to keep it then.
Even Google said they send refurbished ones after 14 days are up. But if I get a replacement through Google, will it be unlockable even if it's updated to 7.1.1? Since it's from Google and not Verizon? Or do they send me a "Verizon Pixel", basically?
I sent my Verizon pixel to Google today and just got an email saying they sent my replacement out to me with 2 day shipping as soon as tracking went live.
Confirmed I have sent my Verizon 32 GB to google for a warranty claim (charging port was charging but couldn't transfer files to computer), and I received a Google Store Edition of the Pixel. Unlocked bootloader. Go through Google for your warranty claims.
You are not out a phone for 2 weeks. I just submitted an RMA to Google for a Pixel I got from Best Buy, and my replacement will be here in 2 days. They send you the replacement as soon as your tracking goes live on the old device.
And if you're using Project Fi with it, then you can still receive/make calls and texts with Hangouts on your PC while the phone is gone.

Confirmed I have sent my Verizon 32 GB to google for a warranty claim (charging port was charging but couldn't transfer files to computer), and I received a Google Store Edition of the Pixel. Unlocked bootloader. Go through Google for your warranty claims.

I'm so happy to hear that. Did your RMA shipping confirmation say you're still getting something like a "Pixel Phone Silver 32 GB (Verizon)" though?
That's what my confirmation email says and the phone won't come in until tomorrow, so I'm worried I'll end up with a Verizon version again.

You are not out a phone for 2 weeks. I just submitted an RMA to Google for a Pixel I got from Best Buy, and my replacement will be here in 2 days. They send you the replacement as soon as your tracking goes live on the old device.

Yes, exactly what it said. When speaking with the rep, they just mean the phone will work with your Verizon carrier. It was unlocked though. And she said if it wasn't, that they would actually create another RMA to make sure it was because I said I was having radio problems on 7.1.1 and wanted to go back down to 7.0 but couldn't with Verizon. So either way you are taken care of. Good luck. :good:
And the February security releases, NOF26V or NOF26W for Rogers, reportedly fixes the audio bug so if you haven't given up on your Pixel yet hold out!!!

Well this is VERY interesting! I will try that before returning. My replacement arrived today so I can try this update first.
I'm on PureNexus. How do I go about updating to this new version?
Well it seems the update fixed the external speaker and helped my headphone jack issue a LITTLE but the audio quality is still bad through headphones. There's a low hissing no matter what. You even hear it after you turn off the music for about 3 seconds.
Now I have to decide what I want to do... Deal with it, hope Verizon shipped me a non-7.1.1 refurbished phone, or go through Google and go phoneless for days... Ugh.

So 100% for sure Google would send me a Play Store edition and not the Verizon version? So even if they sent me a refurbished one, I could unlock it?

Yeah I agree. If you want root then you might as well do it the right way. And you're sure the phone is at fault right? Have you tried it on another Pixel?

I mean, I've tried many different cables/headphones and I've used the same cables and headphones on all my previous phones. So I'm positive the audio is incredibly awful. Even the Verizon person immediately could verify with their headphones. It's bad.

I am 100% for sure. I confirmed with them several times as well. They don't carry brand new Verizon phones. You'll be getting a brand new in the box Play Store Edition Pixel. I promise, the lady was making fun of Verizon even for locking them. She said if for some reason Verizon locked it, just do another RMA and they will take care of it.

They don't even test it. They shipped mine out before they even received my defective one. 2 different locations. If its coming from Carol Stream Illinois or whatever, its a brand new Play Store Edition Pixel.

My email said the same thing about the Verizon Pixel as well. Trust me. You'll see.
I'm wondering if with all this locking / unlocking / returning the device so we can unlock, if Verizon will eventually unblock the IMEI of their devices so that we can unlock as in the Google store version. That's assuming that the imei is what is locking the device. Anyone know exactly why the vzw can't be unlocked on 7.1.1 and the Google version can? I mean they are the same exact phone, same bootloader, same everything even the same updates.
