What to do with an S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Okay so basically this is a question of what to do with a S4 that was shipped to my business. We received a S4 through fedex about a month ago that an old employee was suppose to receive at their home(now living out of state). We have had the phone for a month now and have asked fedex to take the phone back b/c they were suppose to pick it up and they always say they can not take it back without being told to do so by main office. The old employee did receive the phone he was suppose after calling at&t and telling them they sent the phone to the wrong address. Again this all happened a month ago and we now still have the phone. I was wondering how long(if there is a time length) before at&t forgets about the phone. Are we able to take the phone and use it as our own at this point.

What firmware does it have? I'd factory reset my old s4 and put my sim in the new one, given that it had anything older than MF3 installed...

I am not sure what firmware, it is at the office at the moment.

It has yet to be activated assuming it's new. Did you have to physically sign for the package from FedEx?

Well it is refurbished. It was sent with a new sim card as well. Yes, it was signed for by someone in the office.

Hmm.. If the owner hasn't made a big deal about it in 30 days, I'm sure there is a time period coming up that would leave you free to do what you like with the device. Maybe 90 days? You'll have to check with your local laws to be sure.

Well the owner had called at&t to tell them the phone was shipped to the wrong address and they overnighted him another one. At that point they said fedex would pickup the one sent to us(again this was a month ago). Another worker does already have an S4 and we put his sim in it yesterday and it worked.

I'd sell it. I'm sure the IMEI is on file somewhere with AT&T. You'll probably be fine with using it, but to be sure you could sell it and get a Nexus 5

Yes, I do not want to sell it though and then have at&t charge him for it once they see it being used in their system.

Have you called AT&T about it?

No, I was thinking of bringing it to the store and seeing what they say about it.

you're going to have to have the original buyer of this phone call customer care.
since it sounds as if it was purchased by a business acct or online, the store will not help.
business customer care, online sales, and store sales are separate.

No, it was not a business account that it was purchased under. It was done over the phone i believe when he did do it. but he already did contact att and all they told him was that fedex would pick up the phone(this was November 20th).

I had a similar situation with a company I worked for a few years back. I was the receiver and FedEx delivered a phone mistakenly to our business. The next day the FedEx driver was told about it, but said he couldn't take it back without approval. I called FedEx no less than 6 or 7 times about it until they finally told me just to keep it, they didn't want to deal with it. I thought about taking it home but had a funny feeling about it so I left it at work. About 3 weeks later, the FedEx driver asks me about it and tells me he is supposed to pick it up. I'm not sure if FedEx was finally told to return it or if the driver was tired of hearing about it and figured he would keep it for himself. I really didn't care. The point is that it isn't worth it. Call FedEx and make them take it back. Make sure you document it when they do. If someone starts asking questions about it, it is on them and not you.

Thank you for your input, that is actually why I did leave it at work. We did tell the driver about it probably 5 or 6 times over 4 weeks. I was actually not the one who signed for it but both the person it was suppose to go to and the person who signed for it do not care what is done with the phone so that is why I am on here asking about this situation. Thanks again.

At&t will eventually lock the imei due to lost/stolen phone. I wouldn't keep it as my own. Some states have low felony dollar amounts on theft. They can trace these phones and lock them down. I actually have this hunk of crap because I bought a wonderful tmobile s4 from a second hand store in austin. Worked great for 3 months. Unlocked bootloader and all the custom roms I could flash. Then one day the Internet stops. Call tmo and they say it's locked down due to non payment. I explained how I purchased the phone and they could care less. It was an expensive media player at that point. Thankfully, the store I purchased it at took it back and gave me this pos. I complain, I'm actually lucky as the Internet is filled with horror stories of buying from an individual and losing their phone and money. Anyway, don't be an ass. Give the phone back or throw it in the trash. Or, you could burn it in effigy in front of your local at&t store. Happy holidays.

I am also wondering if I were to use it on my at&t account(currently using XT860) would I be seen as stealing it or anything to that effect by at&t.

My mom recently called complaining that her device was malfunctioning and they replaced her handset, she went through this process 3 times and at that point she said not to send her another phone, that she wanted a different phone. After many calls to customer service we finally got a hold of a really nice representative and she worked with her and she was able to "upgrade" to a Samsung Infuse which is MUCH nicer than the one she has now.
I had some legitimate issues with the Evo 4G, where my data connection would drop whenever I was inside a building, but as soon as I would get outside, or into the Sprint store, everything would run flawlessly. They kept telling me that there was nothing they could do because to them, it was working fine.. They told me, you can send your phone back for them to give you a new one, but that required me being without a Smart Phone for a week (which with my job, I use my Smart Phone everyday! I told them that was unacceptable) After many calls and complaints, I went into the store to get a new phone, where they informed me that there was a note on my account to let me get an early upgrade.
I think if you really want to get a different phone already, it might just be as simple as complaining that there is something wrong with your phone. However, they might want you to ship it back to have them give you a new phone of the same make (leaving you without a phone for a week or two) a few times before they even think about letting you get a different phone.
Try to find a legitimate flaw with your current phone, something that can't exactly be corrected, some seldom used feature that just doesn't work correctly, then complain like it's the end of the world

Can at&t verify if a phone has been reported lost or stolen?

Tomorrow im meeting up with a person to trade a iphone 5 for their Galaxy s4. We are meeting up at a at&t store and I wanted to ask you guys a question. Can a at&t rep at the store tell if the phone was reported lost or stolen? If it wasn't, is it possible for the person to report it stolen afterwards? What can I do to protect myself from this happening? Thanks in advance.

This has been a hot topic lately. There are a few threads about this, blacklisting a phone.
They can verify it isn't stolen at that moment, yes. But, they will not transfer ownership or notate the account. The person that bought the phone can report it stolen the next day, week, or even later than that.
You can't really do anything to protect yourself from this. AT&T also shares that list with T-Mo so the phone is blocked from both networks. Only the original owner can lift the ban.
Unfortunately this has made buying and selling a phone second hand a lot harder.

I wish Att would do something to help protect people from this new scam. I bought a s4 off swappa for a great price and I had the same concern. I took the chance since I pay for it with paypal and the guy had good feedback and he had other phones for sale. At least this way I have documentation that I bought it.

Do the transaction at an att store. It will be documented in there system eliminating the ability for them to falsely report it lost or stolen
BEAST......... that is all
Just got back from doing the trade. Seemed like an honest guy, he gave me the receipt and had no problem showing me his license and waiting out the process at the at&t store. Phone was never activated on his account, he paid full price for it. Even swap and all is well. I was still nervous so I took a pic of his license and even his license plate just in case but I dont see any problems going foward.
When I got my S4, the att rep noted the other persons account.

Called AT&T Store in NYC for the Note 3; full price at @ $725 and they will unlock
I just called an AT&T store in Manhattan, NY and asked about the Note 3. They said they will be able to sell the phone on Oct. 4th, but will have the units for display beginning tomorrow. They also said they will sell the phone at the full price of $725 and that they will unlock it, but they will need to order the full-priced phone online, as the in-store units are all meant for the monthly plans. They will also need me to fill out a form to get some approval from AT&T for unlocking the phone.
My question is how do they unlock them? We should do whatever they do and that way it looks legit all the way through. No tripping that e-fuse from KNOX.

Unlocked bootloader means custom roms and root and whatnot. SIM unlocked means you can use an ATT phone on T-Mobile or vice versa.

I would hope so. I went into my local one today and told them I wanted to buy one full price and he said sounds good like it wouldn't be an issue. Gave me his card and told me to call next week. I really hope I don't go in on the 4th and them have them tell me they got to order one for me and then have to wait even more. I will be sure to clarify that again next week.
This was at a corporate store by the way that I was at.

Or you could order one on Monday.
So this is very interesting. I had been reading on XDA that the AT&T store in Jamaica, Queens, NY, had Note 3 phones for sale, so I called them this morning and asked if they had the black Note 3 in stock. The rep said they did, after consulting his manager.
I was a little shocked to hear they had phones in stock for sale, so I asked again if he meant Note 3. He said he meant Note 3, too. Then I asked him how much it would cost me to purchase the phone at the full price and he said it would be $725, after consulting again with the manager. I said I would drop by to buy the phone and hung up.
I had a couple of other questions, so i called again a few moments later, and confirmed again that they had Note 3 in stock for sale.
So, having confirmed so many times they had the phone in stock, I made a 50-min trip to their store, and ask for the rep I spoke with. The rep met me and then asked me to wait while he would get the phone. I heard him talking to a couple of colleagues of his and I kinda knew what was coming. They were saying something from which I concluded the phone was not in stock.
The rep came to me and said they didn't have the phone. I was PISSED! I told him that i asked and confirmed so many times if they had the phone and he said they did. The rep said he had asked his manager and the manager had said they did have the phone, so he told me they had the phone.
I spoke with the manager, and he said he was sorry as there was a misunderstanding. This pissed me off more. They specifically told me the price of the full-price Note 3 was $725 on the phone, so where the freak was the chance of mixing that phone with the Note 2 or any misunderstanding? I am normally very tolerant, but this just made me mad.
The dummy manager screwed it all up, and even when apologizing, he was very dismissive, saying they don't have the phone and will let me know when it arrives. I wanted to say, " You moron, I came to this store because you were selling it today. If I wanted to wait, I could have bought from where I live instead of making a long trip to this store." But, I didn't say that, completely. I said it without the "moron" part. It took them additional five minutes to look in their system to tell me it was going to be available for sale on Oct. 4th.
The funny part was another rep was telling two women they had the Note 3 for sale while I was standing there, after being told they didn't have the Note 3. So that rep went and asked someone and came back and told the women they didn't have the phone for sale. How incompetent these reps are at that store!
Other XDA members, who work at AT&T, this post is not directed toward you. I am just sharing my experience and frustration at the misinformation from and incompetence of the store reps of the Jamaica corporate AT&T store and the dummy manager.
I checked out the display unit of Note 3 at that store, and I have to say, I wasn't very impressed, in comparison to the Note 1. The display unit's baseband version wasn't N9005, but N900auc something.
I've dealt with a lot of dummy employees and managers at the At&t stores and t-mobile in the past so I know your pain. They most likely have the phone in stock but aren't allowed to sell it till the 4th of Oct.

Bought a Verizon PrePaid Moto G Today...

So let me tell you how this went down...
First, I go to a local Best Buy Mobile store to check out the Moto G for my girlfriend. They tell me they can't sell me one in the store until Jan. 9th, but if I purchase one online and choose to pickup in the store, I could get one. So I stand in the store, buy the phone on my GS4, and pick it up at the counter. Weird process, but whatever.
So I bought the phone. The lady at the register assured me that I would be able to use this on her line (which is a contract line). Go to activate it, and find out that it can't be done until the 9th. That's cool, no problem. Once I get home, I find out that the phone will only work on a prepaid line and BestBuy did not inform me of this. I go back up to the store to return it, but they won't take it back because it's opened. Oh, I forgot to mention, the lady at the damn counter was the one who opened it!
So, is there ANY way that I could get this to activate on a contract line without having it activated on a prepaid line for 6 months, or am I screwed? If not, is there a good way to bypass the activation and use it solely as a wifi "tablet" (for my girlfriend's kid)?
If I actually am screwed, anyone want this thing for $80 shipped in the continental US?
That's a lie about it being opened. I have returned prepaid phone there on several occasions. There is something either shady about your story or the person working but something isn't adding up here.

You have a $100 iPod touch alternative (which is why I bought it) I recorded a short video to show you, wiped it real quick because I just got it yesterday anyways

Cool story, brah. Nonetheless, I guess you missed the fact that he bought this for his girlfriend who is under contract with Verizon which is a CDMA carrier. You can't buy a GSM phone and use it on a CDMA carrier. The only time one would need a SIM card slot is if you're using it on Sprint or Verizon's LTE network and since this phone doesn't have LTE....
Thanks for the responses guys! I'll try the unlock method later tonight when I have the phone in hand again (girlfriend still has it at the moment).
As for the return policy, I agree with y'all. I probably should be able to take it back, but the lady at the counter seemed like she might have been new or something. I actually tried to take it back about 4 hours later, so way within the 14 day window mentioned earlier.
On a side note, I won't be using the phone either way as I just went ahead and bought a like-new GS3 from a friend that she is going to use (wish I would have known he was selling it PRIOR to all this). If I can use it as a tablet, I'll just let her kid have it, but if not, I'll try and take it back again.
Will keep everyone posted!
keep us posted guy, I might take you up on that offer.
Good luck.

Can you use this phone with other CDMA carrier?
So I can buy one at best buy at 99 usd and use or not? No need anything like an active line or anything else?

You can bypass the activation easily, simply hit next 1 time, pull down the notification center, click on the multitasking button and swipe away the activation screen quickly, and boom! You have a $100 iPod touch alternative (which is why I bought it) I recorded a short video to show you, wiped it real quick because I just got it yesterday anyways

Correct. After being told they didn't have any at my local store I was happy to inform them that they had 8 of them in stock which was very easy to find out online, and a little arguing about whether or not they could sell it yet, as well as a call to their Verizon rep, I finally was able to procure a Moto G without activating it. Hoping to find out this will work immediately with PagePlus.
Good news everyone, I was able to bypass the activation screen and unlock the phone for "tablet" use (using the methods mentioned in this thread). After playing with the phone for a little while, I gotta say, I actually like the thing! While we won't be using this as a phone, I will probably keep it to use as a MP3 player for the house.
I played around with the features a little and the only real disappointment that I saw was the camera. Maybe I'm use to the 13MP on the GS4, but the picture quality just didn't seem very good. Better than my girlfriend's old iPhone 4, but lacking nonetheless.

Let me know how that works out. I tried and the pageplus rep said that the phone was unable to work, and it needed to be 'unlocked.' I wonder if I just got someone who didn't know what to do.
I returned my Verizon prepaid moto g today to BB. I did not have any issues. They did check to see if it had been activated. They turned the phone on and seeing the activate wizard appear turned it off. They only thing I didn't get back was the $0.70 for a 911 fee.

I said before, they will be black listed eventually. It's easy for them to start black listing them as they get them back. They are not going to want to accidentally have them activated again.
I don't think we have to worry for now, but at some point I would bet money there if a forced blacklist of all Note 7s if you kept it or not. I don't think they can make you return it, but they can keep you from using it on their network.

How did you unlock your Sprint Note 7 for use with AT&T?
I talked to a connection I have at Sprint (high up), they will not be blocking Note 7s unless you swap them out to Samsung, then they go dead as if lost. If you choose to keep it, they are not cutting you off or forcing you turn them over, it's only recommended. In fact less than half of the Note 7 user have return them and are still active as of today.
Hmmm.... Has anyone heard of anymore Notes going up in smoke? Last I heard 97 had went up in flames here in the United States. I haven't heard of any new cases since before the recall got expanded.

Surprisingly easy to believe. Pretty sad. I'm just trying to decide how long to keep my device though. Updates. Support. Even insurance. It's all a question now. Until the next big thing at least
Sure they are blocking phones turned in with the recall but NOT phones that are still active.
Mine is fine as well!! Note 7 is not going to leave my hands, unless of course after all this time it decides to explode, but i'm not counting on it.:good:
