[Q] Have you experienced this Screen problem (Fading out) ? - Nook Touch General

My Nook STR display looks like it has worn out or faded out.The (black) colour seems worn out , dimmed and heavy ghosting.(even after shut down, see the attached images).I can recover it bit by refreshing the scree (everytime I turn a page) but it is annoying and distracting. And this happen after about 5 min of booting and soon after nook start it look ok (but dimmed a bit)
This started to happen about a month ago and I have been using my Nook for 2 years now without any problem.
To solve this I restored it using the Nook Manager but the problem remains.
Please give me your views and advice. I am suspecting a hardware problem.
Note I don't use any apps like NoRefresher or FastMode.
[I'm new to this thread posting and apology for mistakes]
Thank You in advance

Somebody like to help Please

I'm no expert but I can't imagine that something like that is NOT hardware-related.

If the problem remains after you did a "factory restore/reset" then it is most likely hardware related.
My NST had ghosting issue when I was experimenting with FastMode/NoRefresher but it went away after I did factory reset and went with a less exotic kernel hack.

Thank you for your response guys
I think I could zoom in the problem.
I took several screen shots using the screen shot app in one of these threads
Surprisingly those images are perfect.
I think the software is working fine.
So the problem is in the display or the display driver. And I notice that the e ink display has becomer darker even when the Nook is power off.
Is there any way to test the display driver ?

Hmm, that looks strange.
It's certainly not the frame buffer, but you already proved that.
Dumping the frame buffer will give you a nice, clean shot.
It could be that the (plug-in) display itself has a problem.
It could be that the voltages out of the (electronic) driver are screwed up.
It could be that the VCom or the EPD waveforms are screwed up.
The first thing that I'd try would be plugging in another display.
I'd also check the dmesg to see if something happened.
You should see stuff similar to this (editted) version:
Code:
DSPTrace:=== DSP: Load waveforms for t = 25 ===
DSPTrace:=== DSP: EINK parser version 1.07 (MV5) ===
DSPTrace:-I- Mode Version: 0 INIT, 1 DU, 2 GC16, 3 GC16(r), 4 A2, 5 GL16, ...
DSPTrace:-I- WMTA = 000047 (hex)
DSPTrace:-I- Ranges: 0-3-6-9-12-15-18-21-24-27-30-33-38-43-48
DSPTrace:-I- [4] Loaded ID = 5, t = 24 - 27, Subframes = 38

Thank you Renate
I checked the dmesg log and found this part is different
DSPTrace:=== DSP: Load waveforms for t = 29
I am not an expert so I attached the log.
Testing with another display is the most reliable method but that takes time as I have to import one from China.:crying:
So is there anyother way to check the display driver ?
I checked the display cable it is perfect. I am really confused but also VERY curious to figure out this mystery

More pictures of disembled display ( isn't is look strange the ghosting even when no power)

No, your dmesg log looks fine.
It's just that your room is warmer than mine!
It looks pretty low-level, driver voltages or display.
I'm sure somebody who works for the display manufacturer could tell you in a second exactly what it is.

Thanks Renate
I think the only way to check (or solve) this issue is to plug a new display.
I was reluctant to spend on a display (nearly $25):crying:
But I ordered one from ebay and now waiting for it .
However, do you think the weather has any effect on the eink displays ?
I found a similar thread from mobileread forum. One poster reports a similar issue with kindle and sony readers.
Permanently screen fading over time problem in e-ink readers - MobileRead Forums
Several posters say they are in Asian countries. So I am also in asia (Sri lanka) So I wonder whether there is a connection.

I could tell you to fiddle with the EpdWaveforms and stuff, but that is a bit of black magic.
Your waveforms are apparently happy and loading.
I don't remember if B&N really set the Vcom on their devices before they left the factory.
The good thing with playing with the Vcom is that it's easily editable.
You said that you took your Nook apart.
Did you see the sticker on the back of the Epd connector?
That tells you the common voltage to the panel, around -2 Volts.
(The barcode says the same thing in Code128B, "-2.25".)
That should correlate to the value in /rom/devconf/epdVcom
You can try changing it if it doesn't.
It probably won't make a big effect, this is more fine-tuning for gray scale.
In my case:
Code:
echo -n "-2250" > epdVcom
(The number is in millivolts, with a minus sign.)
I dunno, put your Nook in the fridge and see if other waveforms work better.

The voltage is the same Renate. But I don't think there is a problem with the Rom and other software stuff.Because I did a complete system restore and the problem remains.
What really bug me is whenever I boot it (or reboot) the screen become ok with clear text. But after about 10 min (this time varies) the problem happens.
I think it is difficult to troubleshoot without a new screen.Plus I haven't seen people complaining about faulty motherboards. This makes me hopeful. (correct me if I am wrong on this)
Anyway Thank you Renate for your time and effort I saw you always trying to help many posters here. Keep up the good work!

Update
I got a brand new display from a ebay seller and my Nook is better than a brand new.
The fading issue is in the display.
The new display is whiter and has better contrast than the orginal one.
The best thing is I can use Renate's Temblast Reader without complete Refresh.
I don't know whether the new display has high DPP but I am more than happy.
I think the weather has an effect on Eink displays.
Thank You Everybody for your kind consideration and advice specially Renate. (Renate look forward to see an updated version of your fantastic Reader app with dictionary and bookmark)

Video of Hermes problems... please watch and let me know your opinion?

Hey all,
I've read these forums, and am 90% sure I have a defective Hermes. However, I'm unsure, as these forum posts were just text, and therefore can't really accurately describe the problems being seen. So, I made a YouTube video showing a couple of my issues, especially the screen fading to white. Like I say, I'd just like confirmation, and I'd like this post and video to serve as a help to others who are wondering if they have the same problem. You know what they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words .
Here are more details of my problems, in no particular order:
o The buttons reset after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen fade problem resets itself after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen calibration issue (not shown in video) seems to last a little longer sometimes. The issue is that calibration gets a little off. It seems to be by 10-20 pixels, but I can't repeat this as readily as the screen fade.
o This has happened with and without a memory card inserted.
o I've tried two different batteries, with the same results.
o I've tried three different firmwares (original, WM5 update, WM6 Black 2.0).
o The battery quick powerdown issue has only happened to me once (battery drains 10% every minute).
Here's the link to the video. It's only 84 seconds, so take a peek!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQWqTkoMX_4
Let me (and others) know your thoughts. It'd be appreciated.
PS... about the screen calibration...
FYI, I know about the screen calibration issues some have had wth the Hermes. However, I don't think this is that problem, since I never, ever have to recalibrate my phone. It always corrects itself eventually.

This has been documented HEAVILY in the wiki and the forums so I wont answer that.
The rest seems VERY weird indeed especially the screen going white?!?!
Is it still in warranty because I would so send it to be repaired.
Not seen anything like that on any forum. Are you keeping it somewhere hot or near an e.m. field just before use?
What additional apps have you installed? Do these problems still occur with an "empty" phone (i.e. right after a hard reset before installing third party apps)? If so then that should rule out software and firmware (ROM).
Fade to white issue: hardware problem IMO

I agree, the screen going white is similar to when I had my O2 XDA EXEC (HTC Universal) in which whenever I moved the lcd into the mini laptop mode the screen would fade to pure white. When I sent it into PPC Tech they notified me saying in which the lcd cable was damaged itself. Im not sure if thats the case with you necesarily, since it seems the screen goes back to normal after powering the device to standby and back.
The keys are most likely software/rom issues. Perhaps maybe you should reflash to a recent rom and see what happens. Although if that doesnt work I suggest you send in for replacement or warranty. I neeever in the 6 months I had my phone did I ever have problems like the one you've listed.
::EDIT::
I just realized I saw that you tried multiple roms, if thats the case I realllly believe you have a defective phone. It does happen that one in a hundred tend to go bad..
Had similar occurance when mine had gotten damp.
fading screen and hardware buttons
Hi,
I've reported some time ago these issues, they started with LVSW Edition (2007-03-20) and after that Pro - BLACK 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and still with 3.01.
I don't think is hardware related. i happens in random way. No specific apps or time or connection.
I've had similar issues with the buttons not working on my 8525. It seems to have to do with changing in and out of landscape mode. For example, I'll always have problems if I reset the phone and leave it in landscape mode and I always have to push the keyboard in and pull it back out to get everything working right.
If the buttons DO work, they are usually wrong, like up and down will instead move left to right. Again, pushing in and pulling out the keyboard fixes it for me. I recently upgraded to a new ROM and couldn't say if the problem persists or not.
As for the white screen issue - I'd say it's FUBAR'd.

White Screen??

My Cingular 8525 is having screens issues that I thought I'd post to the community if anyone has seen this.
The normal screen will go to all white under thermal conditions it appears. Thermal being inside a hot car, in my holster against my hip, gripping in my hand, heavy use with BT or wifi... thus I suspect thermal. I've changed battery's, no change. If it has changed to all white screen, a soft reset will not revert the screen back. The pda appears to have to "cool" off before screen will recover.
Could this be a LCD driver chip dieing? The screen itself? Worth repairing? Got my eye on the AT&T Fuze but wanted to keep the 8525 going for a few more months.
Thanks, Craig
holy crap I'm having the same problem. I havent determined heat to be the problem, but the only possible clue is that once, right after i hung up ona phone conversation, the screen turned semi white. If you looked real hard you could tell that the menus and programs were still operating normally, but the screen was screwy. using johkoss's V8 w. Manilla2D
Major problem, theres a MASSIVE thread going for this, sometimes it pays to use the search function.....
this is "the most common issue" on a hermes device.
I, personally, experienced it 3 times with 3 different hermes. Each time I had to send the device back to the shop. Because my device was under warranty, I always got a new one, free of charge.
You guys might want to check the Wiki, cause I believe there's a section there just dedicated for this issue.
I can't remember what the details are, but if my memory serves me right, it has something to do with the hardware (connection of cables to the screen).
I don't use hermes anymore, but I still come to the hermes forum every now and then...
Therer are actually a myriad of reasons you can get whitescreen, both hardware and software. From the descriptions though, it sounds like hardware.
This can be one of the most difficult things to fix as there may be multiple reasons and fixing one thing won't fix the issue.
^
I am agree with you. White screen may be appears occasionally and may be not. When white screen appears in my experience, it's enough to soft-reset.
May be different solutions with another?
HTC TyTN White Screen Issue with S/N Starting with HT6's
is your TyTN S/N start's with a HT6 you have a defective model for sure they are one of the first breads and are being known too have issues, so anyone make sure it starts with a HT733G4323 Etc, if your buying one of these used.
Or Even new Watch Out.
HTC TyTN
1.10
mobile 5
With 6.1 Plug-in's
Can't say that MY HT6 is a problem.. I actually found it faster than a HT7 (I have both). I did have to replace the LCD, BUT, it was because the touchscreen died, NOT whitescreen.
I bought the HT7 as a broken Hermes off ebay and found that it was actually less responsive than my older model. Used it to fix my older HT6 than use the HT7 motherboard in my, now, Frankenphone....
The "broken" Jasjam had a broken camera. It was actually just unplugged from the board. Liked my older model better...
Cheers...
White Screen
Hi to all,
I'm using PDAcorner v.20 w/ 5mb page pool,i to has encounter a white screen issue,it is true that its my be a hardware and software issue but if you only encounter white screen that all the time it is a software issue, you can check (schaps advance config) im using version 2.02.1.0.0 builtin in pdacorner v20 check the performance setting disable file system cache and file system filter cache in the glyph cache use only 8kb observe if the white screen will appear again.
hope that this will help all with white screen issue.

[Q] Nook Glow not glowing - fix?

I have a Nook Glowlight bought Oct 2013. I rooted it back then but really just use as standard e-book now. Yesterday (~22mth old) the glow stopped working. The light symbol still changes and I've tried 2sec on the n button and via the menu to turn it on and off. I've gone to power off, waited a few minutes then powered back on. Battery is currently at 87% but running of charger doesn't make any difference I still can't turn the backlight on. Is there a firmware fix for this or is it just that my LED string (or driver) has blown? Not impressed with the nook reliability if so.
This is the first case of such a Glowlight failure I have ever heard of. I have seen a factory testing tool somewhere (one that can pinpoint an exact cause of lighting failure). I will search my archive for it and get back to you.

Edit:
Good news is - I found what I mentioned above. Bad news is that I have no idea how to run it, or if there even is an application present, beside all of the test result images. Hopefully someone will know. I have uploaded it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61989943&postcount=5 . The reason why I think it may contain something useful are those images: http://imgur.com/a/Q05ca#0
Thanks Warszawa, not sure how useful it is with no instructions but I've grabbed it. I've done a factory reset (power on holding both lower buttons), still no glow. Seems unlike a firmware glitch would last through a factory reset so looks like a hardware failure. I'm waiting on a reply from Nook as to the exact warranty, just in case it is 2yrs. Other than that I guess it would be take the back off and look for a loose connector maybe.
Well, a connector failure is a possibility. Faint, but present. Maybe a bit of moisture caused a corrosion there? I have pulled the LED strip from a broken screen assembly. You can see it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60107819&postcount=3 . And by the way - Warszawa is a city I live in. Nickname is 'thrackanomir'.

Artefacts on the screen

Hello everyone,
Got a problem with my Galaxy note 3 amoled screen. Couple months ago some lines appeared on that, look like artefacts or dead pixels or something, not really sure. Didn't drop/drop in water the device before that. No idea why that happen. But, they don't go.
Tried some dead pixels apps from market with no success.
Due to certain reasons cannot give the device to repair service, so, need to try to fix that by myself.
OS version is 4.3, if that matters.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Will attach the screenshot. The line in the middle. Have few of them already. Background is green, to make it more visible.
Thanks!

Looks more like heat damage to the screen adhesive than a software/electronic defect, to me. I'm just guessing here, but could it have been left in a spot where a beam of focused light could burn the screen? Mine has a few little defects on the screen from where a water bottle on a window ledge focused the sunlight onto a point on the screen.
factory reset.
Flash stock rom and see .
Thanks for replies guys,
One more thing I probably should mention,
The line on the attached pic is maximized, the real lines are quite small, like 3-5mm length. Really small. But anyway visible...
Jaitsu,
Hmm tried to recall but don't think something like that happened. Sometimes I use my phone as GPS when riding bike, means it's outside under the sun (but not a focused light or something), max. 1 hour per time. Could that be reason?
Also, did you find any way to fix that, by yourself?
I read about several ways to fix screen issues, including leaving phone without battery for some time, or even placing it into the freezer. Tried battery method yesterday with no result, but kind of worry about the freezer...
JJEgan
Yes factory reset is a common advice but you really think it might help? Looks like a hardware issue to me. Can a software glitch damage the display? Also, lines are everywhere on the screen, not like one certain place.
Will give it a try if nothing else found, just, sounds uncommon...
Agree probably hardware but a factory reset rules out firmware .
Thats the first step for a service tech sheet .

LeEco Pro 3 Display

I have this beautiful and powerful phone LeEco Pro 3 that i`ve been using for half an year or so with AOSIP ROM. Its a wonderful phone with an amazing performance.
The thing is my display started a problem history that has become a long history i will try to resume in a few words.
It started in one day i pressed the power button in order to light the display on and check something in an APP i needed. I found out that before the display lighted on some weird colors and artifacts appeared on screen. But indeed the display worked fine.I thought it was just a temporary thing and just kept using it until In the second day that the weird colors and artifacts became permanent, so i realized i was in trouble. :crying:
Tried sending the phone to technical assistance.
The first one - Told me that they could get a new display for testing but indeed the results were the same and they were seeing oxidation in the display connector on the board, not the display flex cable but the main board connection. They said they would not go further into it and they decided to give the phone back to me. Weird thing is that when i turned the phone one it worked for one day without issues. He said the phone was in the same condition, but that is not what i saw. The problem indeed happened again one day later , but it was less worse as i could at least see the screen, but almost half the screen was horribly shaking, trembling.
The second one - Once the tech guy looked the phone he said he didnt see any sign of the phone getting opened. He said he would be seeing signs of glues or anything like that but in his opinion it was definitely not opened. But he warned me the display could physically brake once he opens it as the phone got contact with oxidation in the toilet(I used to left it in the toiled while i take bath). So i was afraid and decided to back off.
The third one - Said he could not find any display so he sent the phone back to me. Didnt open it at all as he was trying to wait for the new display to arrive in order to be safe. They said they are 90% sure its display replacement would do the job. The thing is - if i used in hot environments the issues seems to slowly disappear . If i use it in cold environments the problems seems to get worse
So here i am. I CAN buy another screen over the internet. But i am afraid if it will work or not. Have anyone there faced same issue? What do you recommend me to do? What would you do
Thanks in advance

There are many many post on this subject, recently in fact. That has links. In fact, you can find them on Alibaba that are all black and made specifically for the Le Pro 3. Here is a link of a guy who used the cool s1 display
Yes it sounds like the display or the flex cables.
