The fact that we were promised a piece of software that should only require minor tweaking is absolutely unacceptable. I use linux for almost everything and that being said I know a bit about rolling out releases of different distros and how to integrate them into different systems. Android is a linux based software, (Opensource might I add), the only reason we don't have the bleeding edge is because Samsung needs to put their horrible UI into it, TW. I don't care about "Touchwiz" its badly programmed and anyone who has taken basic programing courses could program a GUI for this phone that puts it to shame. I'm sick of dealing with leaked versions of things that I was promised. No offense to any of the Devs, you guys are incredible and should be paid to roll out these releases rather than waiting for these bad companies with their "programmers" to try to find out how to use a toilet. we should have a stable build of gingerbread by now and I'm sorry but building a driver/hardware file for a computer isnt that hard, nor should it be so for Samsung since they placed all the parts into the phone. What do they have like one person with half a brain trying to reprogram the whole OS using Assembly code? Do they not realize the OS its self is open source and you can mod the code for each phone?? Both sprint and Samsung are horrible companies, if Froyo doesn't show soon, I will never touch a single one of their products after my contract is up, which is soon. Sorry, I just needed to rage. Hard.
Im with you man. Samsung stinks! I traded my EVO for a Epic and I have regretted it since. It has the best hardware out there and ZERO support. They are too slow about upgrades that are available and even lower end phones have gotten Froyo. They should skip Froyo and be first to drop Gingerbread. But, that would be too much like right for Samsung who sold the phones then dropped all of its users like a bad habit. If they dont do something soon Ill never buy another phone from Samsung. I dont blame Sprint because dropping updates is not on them. The EVO will probably be the next to get Froyo because that's the phone that Sprint has thrown it all in with.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's Sprint's fault for the delayed release. Sprint putting in their bloatware is the most likely reason we have not received the OTA yet. While Samsung is at fault for not getting it out sooner, it is Sprint that is causing this delay.
All companies are like this its not just sprint or samsung... I've been with every carrier except att and I've tried all three major cellphone brands and they've all lagged behind like this.
Until android is less fragmented, (think its getting there), and carriers realize their UIs only frustrate consumers and there are better ways to advertise/garnish more fundage from existing customer base; we will face "version lag" all the time regardless of carrier/phone.
Just my $0.02

I think saying Gingerbread should be available now is pushing it..at this stage Gingerbread is for "developers"...I'm not saying that its not stable or anything, but it requires time to optimize for the hardware at hand...no phone ever gets a new Android OS until a few months after it came out..other the developer phones...
As for Froyo..according to samsung they gave it to the carriers..yes they have been slow overall but considering they are releasing 2.2.1 and not just 2.2 puts them there...
We know 100% that touchwiz is not the issue at this point as the leaks are running touchwiz just fine..
Either way there is still hope for end of the year update..as next playbook comes out on the 29th

I haven't heard any body mention this in the forums but I was reading an article that said sprint was bringing their new crappy sprint ID software to the new epic update and I guarantee that's probably what's causing the delay

Sprint "bloatware" is only a few apps worth a few megs. I think the only bloatware would be TW. I will never understand why is it so hard to port, say, the g2 build of android to our phone or any other android phone considering its pure vanilla with a few apps installed extra.. but that's why I'm no dev lol

right its not like ANY of the us carriers have gotten froyo on the galaxy s, something is seriously WRONG HERE and samsung is to blame! the phone should had froyo on it since DAY1! the nexus s had gingerbread since day 1 why didnt the galaxy s. regardless the epic should have froyo on it and if they want to release gingerbread later then go ahead. release froyo already! the phone never realized its potential. making us wait this long and i mean all of AMERICA is going to hurt samsung in the long run. i for one WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG PHONE AGAIN! tweet email samsung and tell them them same.
btw if u bought a vibrant, how pissed off r u that the nexus s came out!

A reply to the (op) My friend owns an Epic so I came on here to check if Froyo was released for it today and I ran across this post. I for one know that this all falls on Samsung and has nothing to do with Sprint. I have an EVO since launch day and have gotten 4 updates including Froyo about a month after release of the phone. Your Epics came out about a week or two after we got Froyo and Samsung has been promising ever since. Google other Samsung phones and you will see this is a trend with this company. The Galaxy S line over seas are not carried by Sprint and they just started getting Froyo Open your eyes its Samsung. No Froyo on T-Mobile, Verizon or At&t

Exactly. Very well said. This is a samsung issue and sprint has nothing to do with it. If that was the case then when the Evo got Froyo it would have probably been delayed also. I am only posting here because I was considering getting a epic but with all this delay and lack of support, I think I will have to re-think that. Everyone said from day one that Samsung would not support the phone and it has been proven true. Just a note on the delay, I have to say that the update was out for the vibrant and it was bricking phones. That shows how good the developers are over at samsung. They can't even program their own product. It's a shame because it's such a nice phone and the keyboard was the icing on the cake. Oh well.

They are both at fault actually. Samsung was slow to release the update to carriers and now they are being slow to release it to the end user. SGS devices in europe have had the update since november.
As to the evo issue, sprint considers the evo its flag ship device and as such makes sure it is up to date whereas they have made it abundantly clear they don't give a single flying **** about the epic so there is no incentive to update.

ATT isn't going to be the one to target. Be frustrated with Motorola.
Still, a Twitter campaign probably won't change much. Look at the Milestone, Droid X. Motorola's already gotten hell from their consumers on those devices. But, that didn't stop them from encrypting this one.
lets see how badly it's locked first, why cry to them if it can be unlocked fairly quickly..
and moto did make statements about being better with the updates, I say give them a chance to do better.
2.3 should be released for the phone by Motorola at some point wont need to wait for custom roms to get that, however thats only if you dont want to wait for the "official" release
All bootloaders are locked. The problem with motorola is that they sign/encrypt theirs. The odds of bruteforcing their bootloader without some sort of leak is highly unlikely.
Yea but if we, by the small chance, get ATT to agree, then its even better ammunition against Moto.
I believe in the dev forum they said the bootloader is signed. Is there a difference between signed and encrypted?
I would really love to get cyanogenmod on this.

I'm not so sure about that. I have a fair suspicion that Motorola is somehow contractually obligated to AT&T to NOT unlock the bootloader. Just a hunch, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Granted, I'm probably wrong, but can anyone show evidence to the contrary?
OK I have to get this off my chest and I think I speak for a lot of Epic folks. We love the phone and we really liked it and everything it did. I'm not a tech kinda person but I did know about Froyo and was looking forward to the update. Got it off the Samsung site and have some of the common problems, checker-boarding, bad video in low light, it is frustrating, I was hoping that this ec05 update would fix those problems but we are into the 3rd day and no real confirmations of anyone getting it and no word from Sprint is dissapointing . Look I know that if I want to I can root my phone and install roms but I shouldn't have to do that. Again I got my Epic, not because of a promise of updates but because of what it did, I know in the scheme of things, like life this isn't a huge deal just kinda sad.
I have listened to your rant my son. I sense your deep pain and disappointment. Now that you have accepted your fate as a "always to be disappointed" Samsung customer, you can go forth into the world knowing that there are other who share your feelings.............and there are others who care not. Unfortunately, I am the latter...stop whining and remember that in the grand scheme of things....Froyo changes nothing.
Just kidding...feel your pain bro. I can patiently wait for an update. If they are delays..well I understand that too. I just hate waiting indefinitely for something I expect without any word from Sprint or Samsung. When will they realize..all we want is communication.
Well said sir!
I hear ya. Samsung and Sprint have really dropped the ball, as much as I love my Epic I think my next phone (probably not for a while) will be an HTC.

Blasphemy !!!!
There's a camera fix out there if that's all you want right now.
Checkerboarding....yeh I feel your pain there. It's not too bad if you take it slow though.
I love my epic; love it more with a nice custom rom running ec05.
Beauty of android is the custom OS; can't get that with an iPhone. You're stuck with what ever Apple releases and that is that.
Samsung hardware is good; just sprint and samsung are slow with updates. They'll be slower still because of the problems with EB13.
My daughters have the shift; it was much more of a hassle to root than my epic was that is for sure. I think Samsung embraces the open source developers more than htc does (I know the dev of midNight was contacted by Samsung and not to tell him to stop)
I for 1 am very satisfied, for the above reasons and also because what is running on my phone is a very low priority all things considered.

Yeah, but they didn't have the turbo last year
I remember the note 3 took forever to get kk. I wouldn't be surprised its well into 2015 until we get lollipop
Well today's the sixteenth who knows
With the staged rollout model, even phones that have an ota available might not get them for another week or so. My Nexus 4 and 7 (2013) are both still waiting, and I won't be too concerned unless another week goes by without the update hitting.

It goes without saying, but updates for the Note 3 are not comparable to updates for the Moto X. Moto updates faster than any other brand....especially Samsung. Takes a while to update all the bloat Sammy puts on their phones.
I don't know when we will get the update, but I'd bet it's well before the end of the year.
Hopefully we can get root at least also. Lol
Well there has not been a soak test yet so immanent release is improbable.

well, then it's not very reassuring that they haven't even gotten to step 1 with updates for us. this pretty much sums up my thoughts that verizon will screw us over. i was sold on this phone with the promises of fast updates, but seeing how verizon didn't really advertise the phone, no accessory makers even bothered with cases or accessories for this phone, it really seems like verizon and everyone else is basically saying screw the moto x. i really don't think the verizon version will get the attention or front running treatment that the 2013 model had. i really don't see L coming to the verizon version before december, possibly not even before 2015. i was hoping for good things for this phone, it doesn't seem like it's going to happen. motorola really screwed us over by releasing the turbo 2 weeks after the X. i think this is it for me with the x, i'll just get the new nexus once i can confirm it will work on verizon.

let me ask you a question, why do you think that Verizon screwed? Just because they did not come put with the update the day others got it does not mean they screwed you. Not even all the N5 has the OTA update so relax already it will come. Also to all the people complaining about Verizon you guys made that choice to be with a carrier that does not like unlocked boot loaders so if you want to change switch to a different carrier like T-Mobile and you can go out and get a pure Motox that's what I did I left sprint to get a really nice phone. I wouldn't say the 2013 X got front running treatment. There was the same problem with accessories. We got lucky that it was updated so fast. There was no real advertising with the 2013 either. Lollipop has been out for relatively no time. We all want it just as bad as the next guy, but give it a rest. It's been assured that the 2014 X will get it, and we will.
As a community we should make noise in the social network ... This sounds like a good idea, but since we don't have the biggest community, I'm not sure if Verizon would even care or listen.

Ok, so Lollypop is MIA. Big freekin deal. I upgraded my Nexus 10 to Lollypop. Now, every time I rent a movie on play, I restarts my Nexus and won't play the movie. Where was it officially announced? I don't recall seeing anything but unsubstantiated rumors.
Honestly the customers are nobodies. the salesmen are there to talk up a product in order for you to spend money/sign a contract. after that verizon/motorola does not care. motorola mobility is a failing company which is why motorola and google sold it. soon lenovo will know the failure of motorola. We are but a small spec in the verizon market. even I read an article the fact they lost 150k people to t-mobile and sprint, they did not care 2 bits about. you really think a small population of a minute group is going to do anything when they dont care about the loss of 150k people? just sit back, relax and either wait for the update which may or may not come or go buy a new phone.
I gave up and went to the nexus 6. I remember from a soak test that verizon only reported 20k sales at that point in time for the turbo. So we have probably been long forgotten.

Bad idea. Have some patience. The update had some bugs, so maybe they are trying to reduce the bugs. Stop this stupid "campaign" and let them work. They could have said no to making it, because it doesn't take 3 seconds to update it. Try waiting until June. It might be out before then

Wait until June.... be patient..... NO. We bought a flagship device to avoid fragmentation with regards to the android operating system. It is absolutely ridiculous that Samsung can get Lollipop on their 2013 Flagship the S4 before we can get it on a new device. Moto has had months since Google pushed it to AOSP to make it work and they haven't. Do you think that every other manufacturer didn't have bugs? No they did but they probably stuck to a timeline to satisfy its customers. Honestly if Motorola and Verizon would give us our bootloader unlock keys we would have a working bug free build of Lollipop within 12 hours. I will never buy a non nexus motorola device ever again. So there. RANT OVER.
