I'm thinking of coming over from an iPhone 3gs and although I love this phone, I think a robust custom ROM scene is a must for me. I tried the Captivate, but the broken GPS and bad AT&T service was enough for me to return it and wait and see how the Epic 4g works out.
I know the Evo has a lot more attention, but I'm not really willing to give it a go with all of its nasty hardware flaws.
Thoughts? Maybe I should just wait for a different phone (but I love this one >_>)?

The Evo has a been scene because Developers got a free one in the last Google I/O. The Epic 4G will take sometime until a fully development community is in place. By that time there will be better phones, since we are near Christmas.
This is a really good point. Hmm, I have some thinking to do I suppose.
That was a pretty ridiculous reply on which to base your opinion. Of course there will be custom ROMs. There's one about to be released any day now, and this phone's only been out for about 5 minutes. This is a killer device... the chefs will come out of the woodwork shortly. They always do.
P.S. See here.

No offense, but you kinda sound like your talking out of your @ss & need to do your homework... The epic community will grow rampant in due time...Not trying to sound like every other flaming jerk, but err, ahh...
Sent from my phone.
I know this is near impossible, but I'm hoping for a ROM with HTC Sense element support. I want me some flipping clock action.
The Moment still has a rom scene and that thing is a disaster that Samsung flat out refused to fix (ie: They couldn't and just abandoned the unit).
I have a feeling the GPS issue is actually solvable on the Epic and I'm praying so is the nasty power usage killing peoples batteries when they want to do crazy stuff like use the phone for something other than making a phone call.
The only concerning thing is the stupid upload cap that makes absolutely no sense. I mean, Samsung HAD to learn a lesson from MomentGate right? They HAVE to actually support this... Rite?
Ok so im not posting this to be flammed or anything but more just to vent and for some opinions. But im really starting to get irritated with android and it's inability to come out with update in a timely manner, and i understand that alot has to do with the carrier to having to test it . But when you have all these android phones being made by 10 different manufacturers with really no limitations so they can all make there own flavor of android with different ui skins and, screen res, processors, file systems... etc. It is ridiculous cause there can't just be one kind of froyo nope , now there is froyo with sense , and touchwiz froyo, and for all the other different kinds of custom manufacturers skins that are thrown in. Which in my opinion makes it really difficult to be able to keep up with updates in a timely manner, and then on top of that samsung releases the fascinate that is supposed to get upgraded to froyo but instead of trying to get that pushed out they get the galaxy tab out with froyo hmmmm why not the fascinate no one knows and now the nexus s gets pushed out with gingerbread but what was that once again no froyo out for the fascinate i hope i am making sense with all this. Anyways as soon as Vzw get a WP7 phone that i like or the iphone 4 im leaving android, mainly for a smoother os and one that isn't so open that updates never happen. I would like some opinions on if im just impatient or if my whole venting session does make some sense to anyone, and if anyone agrees and is thinking the same as i am.
Ahhhhh i feel better... kinda

Oh believe and that is why i do like android but maybe its just i get bored with a device to easily, this is my 4th android device this year lol. But the whole long periodsof time to get updates to fix bugs is getting to the point i just want something new, cause i love the fascinate and im gonna keep it for a backup/toy just feel the need for something new. Android just isn't cutting it for me anymore.
I love Android and the Fascinate in general and I think this whole 2.2 froyo update thing has blown absurdly out of overrated proportion! Yes 2.2 will be cool but alot of people are thinking it's going to be the awesome of all awesomes but it isn't? Aside from flash and app2sd there isn't a whole lot to speak about (thats going to be directly noticeable anyhow IMO)? Now, the Samsung Slow to no update record is another thing but we will have to see how that aspect plays out!

Agreed froyo isn't all that great i know i had it on 2 other devices just the fact of this device should have it. But very much agreed
Do you really think that new iPhone or Windows device you get will update to a new OS within a few months of its release? The only difference is that you start with lower expectations for Windows or the iPhone.
I Think your Just Fed up With waiting for an update that Probably wont be out for a bit longer. Watch if you Switch devices after a while your gonna come crawling back! they always Do!....On Another Note I Want Froyo for Jit and Flash so I could watch Videos online. Would be Nice >,< and Facebook games LOL!

Sounds like a classic case of spoiled brat syndrome to me. Get a job, quit having your mommy and daddy pay for your little toys and you'll appreciate the phone(s) more.
87jason I came from an iphobe 4 to verizon because of the superior service. I ended up getting the fascinate. I can say also there is nothing that android can do that Iphone doesn't do better. A jailbroken iphone ofcourse.
Themes, widgets, apps iphone wins hands down. There is no denying it. Oh and yes I said widgets.
One phone, once a year... no headaches or worries is something better out. The phone came out in June and still no phone is better hardware wise. Except the gpu is galaxy s is a bit better. But what's the point when there are ZERO APPS.
WAIT FOR IPHONE I AM
I think its more that the fascinate didn't sell well for verizon so them nor samsung are that worried about it. Sux but coming from a flagship like the droid was it had updates all the time but it use to be the big dog.

Nope. The "unlocked" part is one reason I went with the Fascinate. I just hope that Froyo gets here soon, so that the development scene can pick up more.
It took them this long to get FroYo out on ANY versions of Galaxy S hardware, we're all still on test builds... and they have Gingerbread running on the Nexus S... which is a freaking Galaxy S with a curved glass screen and NFC, a NEW piece of hardware.
So, Samsung is launch partner for Nexus S, first manufacturer with hands on Gingerbread, top in sales this year for Android, and spending millions to upgrade their phones...
Anyone wanna tell me why the f all Galaxy S phones aren't getting upgraded straight to gingerbread, before any of the other phones have a chance? Seems like they missed a boneheadedly obvious way to stage a coup on the hearts and minds of us loyal fans. Freaking Public Relations FAIL.
And I'll probably get flamed for this, and probably correctly, but just figured I'll be honest:
Last week I sold my epic and went back to Verizon, and got the Incredible. I miss the 4" screen, the ease of typing, the 4g, and the ability to easily wow people. And the Dinc's camera isn't as good.
But I don't regret it. I feel like my GS time was that of a first adopter. I paid for the wow. Since going back to DInc, I don't have as much wow time, but you know what? My GPS works as soon as I open GMaps. I don't need a hack to fix anything. My battery is only 1300mah, and doesnt last all day, but it never freaks out and drains while its asleep, or drains in two hours.
If this sounds like a rant, it's not. I loved the Epic, and the Vibrant I had first. The screen is amazing, and I waited since the HD2 for a phone bigger than 3.7 but smaller than 4.3. Samsung just needs to step up its validation, and it's support systems. The legion of Iphone fans aren't going to stick with any phone that doesn't just work.

as im more likely to agree....im kind of wondering if there is a phone that does make you feel warm and fuzzy, its probally cancer, herpes, or mono. you might just wanna stick with a good phone and leave the warm and fuzzies to the adult bookstores
Now I'll be honest. I think what you spewed is complete garbage. I'm running dk28 with no issues. I didn't have issues with eclair after the updated it to fix the "capped upload" issue. So I CHOSE to update it, I didn't have to...
I don't know how someone can possibly be so impatient that they'd run away crying like a 12 year old girl with a skinned knee for an update that hasn't even had a official release date given for it (that I've ever seen anyway). So, your impatience is not a sprint/samsung issue. It's a you issue. But I guess people like you would rather throw out a buggy update to shut whiners like you up. But then I'll guarantee that'd warrant another post from you crying about it. Maybe in the themes/apps section this time?
With that being said, since you obviously don't understand forum ediquette, I'm also left to assume you screwed something up when you flashed unsupported software to your phone by not follwing instructions, or whatever the case is. And AGAIN this is something that's you're fault, not sprint/samsung.
So yeah... The devs here made my phone a lot more of a pleasure to use. But it was a great device out of the box. The best I've owned so far by a long shot.
And if you want everything to work %100 why would you flash leaked software anyway?

Trevor, wrong section but since it's already here I must say it's definitely a justified rant. I've personally never really had an issue with those problems because I expect them to happen when I change it from stock, but I suppose I'm the minority. A friend and I had a conversation a week ago and believed because of the Nexus S that it would be in Samsungs best interest to just release the Vanilla version of each release to the carriers and let us pick and choose which bloatware we'd like, much like what we currently do with the ROMS. It would definitely feed the 3rd party developments as well as enhance what makes the Android platform wonderful.
With that said, try to post in the right section next time =)
So OP has a DInc now? He's going to be pissing and moaning when the Galaxy S series gets Gingerbread before his phone (thank you Nexus S). I hope the DInc forum goers are extremely tolerant..

Have you ever thought that the Incredible had bugs when it first came out. Really the Epic is only 2 months old while the incredible came out at April. And also Iphone 4 came out with a serious flaw of "holding the phone wrong" and Iphone users still stick with it.

How is the GPU in the EVO Shift?
Is the smaller screen really a draw back?

It is really a matter of opinion. I had an Epic and I will tell you that there is no other smartphone line on the market that can match the graphics performance of the Hummingbird processor. They won't even come close.
That said, the GPU on the shift is not bad, its just not as good as the one in the SGS line. Personally, I don't play a lot of games on my phone and if I do they are not GPU intensive ones. My wife (she owns the shift and I now have an Evo) plays the sims on her phone and I've never seen it even stutter. I've watched full 1080p avi videos on both phones and never had an issue.
As to the screen, no one can say for you if its an issue. For me, it is. 3.6 is just too small but to my wife its more than enough. My suggestion would be to the sprint store and play with each. If you want the big screen the Evo is great and it has a great development community. If you want the keyboard, even though there doesn't seem to be a lot going on around here there are a lot of great devs would have already switched and are just waiting for permanent root to start releasing some very cool stuff.
For me, I wouldn't get or use my evo without the sprint extended battery for it. That fixes a major evo issue, battery life. It depends on what's most important features on a smartphone. I won't go through all the questions but figure out what you're wanting to do most often and go with the phone which that is it's strongpoints.
None of them do everything well.
I'm personally waiting for root on the Shift before I decide to buy it. Of course by then Sprint may announce something better. We'll see. My Hero is fine for now.

I agree, that's intriguing. Permanent root will happen, the Shift out of the box will blow your Hero away if you're worried about the bloatware.
I have the phone and I'm waiting for Perma root. In fact, if it's not achieved before my 30 days mark, I might take it back and buy it again once its done.
Use and abuse the 30 days I say. This also might free me up for whatever is being revealed on the 7th, which is one day after my 30 day mark.

Like you, I'm currently using an HTC Hero (fully rooted, ROM'd, & themed). I'm due for my upgrade next month, but am having difficulty deciding between the Epic & Evo Shift. They both seem to have their strong points, but I'm just torn. I'm thinking I'll "test drive" the Epic (sAMOLED screen really looks nice), and if I don't like it I'll use the 30-day return policy & give the Evo Shift a try.
The biggest complaint I've been reading about the Epic is lack of support. I've figured out that this basically means people are upset that it doesn't have an official Samsung FroYo release yet. Understandable. HTC seems to have gotten better with their updates (my wife has an OG Evo), but I remember a time when we Hero users were very, very upset with HTC/Sprint because we didn't have Eclair for the longest time. Remember that?
Bottom line (for me) is that no phone manufacturer is perfect!

I completely agree! The Eclair update for the Hero was a definite disappointment. I was very apprehensive about rooting (fear of bricking my phone). Once I did it & realized how easy it actually was I kicked my self for not doing it sooner - no more dialer lag!
I hope you're right about HTC and their updates going forward. Maybe the Hero fiasco taught them a valuable lesson - the Evo 2.2 update and subsequent patch (Swype & other software) seems to show they've learned something. If the delay goes on much longer for the Epic users, Samsung may find a lot of people either jumping ship early or just refusing to buy their products in the future.
I know I'll most likely root whatever device I end up with, but I think Samsung's delay with FroYo is my biggest hangup because I don't want to go through it again!

Honestly, if you are considering the Epic, don't. Its not worth the money. I bought it at launch and it was the biggest technological mistake I've ever made. I should have gone with my gut and gotten an Evo from the start. If the Epic gets froyo it will be the last update it gets, it will never see gingerbread or anything beyond. They've left the GPS barely functioning for this long and I doubt if they'll ever really care enough to fix it. The upside is you never really have to worry about bricking it because its already a brick.
I have a MacBook and love it. I thought I would like an iPhone but I read stories about the cons of the phone. I feel as if apple heavily censors some apps and deny some really useful apps because maybe they think someone could do something remotely black or grey hattish with it.
A Swiss army knife or leatherman multi tool can be very useful and handy sometimes. You could also use it to cut someone's brake lines or slit their throat. They decide that we aren't responsible enough to have something like that at our disposal. Once again, I digress.

Speaking of opinions... my ex-wife had a Moment which she cursed constantly... what did she "upgrade" to? You probably guessed it... the Epic.
I also plan to spend some more "hands on" time at the Sprint store with both phones.

I do apologize for my harsh opinion. I felt very burned by Sprint and Samsung based on the fact that the sales rep sold me on the epic based on a claim that there would be 4g in my area within 2 months and that the Epic would have 2.2 in less than a month. However, when I came back to have them check out my wife's instinct the same guy told me that the Epic wouldn't be getting FroYo and as you are aware there is no official Froyo for it nor is there 4G in my area. I bought my wife a Shift because I knew she couldn't handle dealing with the Instinct any longer but I bought it off contract so that when hers is up we can leave Sprint and just pay my ETF. If I could get out of Sprint with just paying one ETF I would do it now.
I've only had this Epic for almost a month and am very satisfied with it so far. But its getting pretty old looking on xda everyday to see someone new complaining about not having Froyo. You got what you paid for people, you bought a epic with 2.1 eclair on it, do you buy windows xp and then when windows 7 comes out you complain they won't upgrade you for free? There will always be something better and something new out there or up and coming you can't expect companies to sit there and keep working on things of the past they have to make money as well and they have to compete with each other and try to stay on top. I'm not saying I don't think they shouldn't release it for us I'm just saying you realy can't blame them for moving on with other phones as well. And if you think 2.2 is gonna make your phone that much better then go get a vibrant from tmobile bc I put 2.2 on my girlfriends phone last week and it didn't do much of anything for it, its just software sure your battery is a little better or the system runs a little smoother your not changing what you physically have the hardware is what it is and you knew all of this before buying the phone and if you didn't then you had 30 days to do some research and return it to sprint.

Alright, I'll bite.
most of us did not buy our epic's having seen a forum full of people dissatisfied with samsung's ability to upgrade their phones. I for one bought my phone on launch day. August 31st 2010. It was a sunny day, there was a nice breeze. I was young without a care in the world. I saw a phone with very formidable hardware and better yet, a promise from samsung that the device would see 2.2 in the very "near" future.
Now I don't know what you paid for your phone, but I paid retail price plus tax. If I had known I was actually paying for an education about what it exactly it means to buy a samsung phone I would have looked elsewhere.
that being said, theres one thing I can't stand and that is people such as yourself who waited until after people bought the phone and realized that and official update in a timely fashion not likely, accepted that risk, and then come here to rub it in the face of those who care about things like kernel sources, and custom roms to tell us about how we should all be as smart as you with your divine phone selecting savvy. I can't say that I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself when I tell you sincerely to gtfo.
yours truly, cozmonot
Ok to someone like yourself I understand that you did not know what you were getting yourself into and I'm not trying to say that someone such as yourself that bought the phone right when it came out doesn't have a right to be mad. I never said I had waited to buy this phone for any reason its just when I see ppl on here that say they just got the phone and now are mad they don't have 2.2 yet its disturbing. I understand we need kernals and source to make better roms and things, I myself am running Nebula and have been since the first week of owning this phone, so as with the rest of you I myself would like it so my rom can be further upgraded. The main thing I was trying to get at is that complaining about how we don't have it isn't getting us it I did not mean disrespect for someone like yourself and I don't think I have any better taste for phones than the rest of us we all chose this phone for whatever reasons but I don't think anyone chose it bc it was going to have 2.2

I agree in that people complaining here doesn't really accomplish much. Apologies, I probably shouldn't reply to threads when I'm angry and tired.
I think we need to make our voice heard by sprint and samsung if we want things to actually happen, and complaining to people in the same position can't make things any better. just look at the vibrant owners who threatened a lawsuit and got the mainstream blogs to post about the vibrant not having froyo, didnt they get the update like a week later? I agree with what you said in your second post and I wish I had known about what I was getting myself into back in August when i signed on the dotted line.

Actually, I did. Also, because of the slide out keyboard. If I wanted a phone forever stuck with Eclair, I'd have kept my Moment.
EDIT: I am not stuck on Eclair, but there are people who don't know about rooting and custom ROMs.

OMGrant this is very true I should probably keep my mouth shut sometimes but its just not easy and that's where the rant part came in...

I bought the phone because of the hardware and because it was stated that 2.2 would be coming soon. I don't understand how people like you can just accept that You have the phone with the best hardware specs on the market at the moment and not be pissed that it doesn't have 2.2. While I agree that coming on xda and starting multiple threads on if FroYo is out is not the most productive way of dealing with the problem, bending over and submitting that because you paid money for the device and knew that it had 2.1 on is just a cop out.
To answer your question on what does FroYo add, here is just a few.
- What about all of the people who spent $30 to $50 on official samsung docks and can't even use it to the fullest without FroYo. IT EVEN SAYS ON DAMN PACKAGING THAT FULL FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE UNLOCKED WITH THE 2.2 UPDATE.
- What about bluetooth voice dialing, JIT, flash, and the updated google apps that come with 2.2, not to mention the speed increase. The FroYo update for the Vibrant doesn't count in this case because everyone knows that update was rushed because of the lawsuit business, and that lead to a bugged release.
And if none of that convinces you, the fragmentation of the market is the best example I can give. Do you know how annoying it is to find an app that you know your phone has more than enough power to run, but it won't even show up in the market because it only works on FroYo and up? IT'S THE ****ING PITS DUDE. For example there is this game that some (ex-sony I think) devs called Lame Castle that I really want to play, but it won't work on galaxy s phones without FroYo. Look it up on the market with Epic, it won't even show up. Now go on appbrain and its there clear as day. There are numerous examples of this, but this is the one that affected me that most.
So when you say that we should have know better and should not be upset, all I can say is that I hope you continue to enjoy the anal that samsung and sprint have given you so far. There's a lot more to come.
It was my first Android. It was cool at first, but just wanted FroYo and refused to get the Evo because the screen sucks and no keyboard.

I would have to say my favorite part about what you said was when you said Froyo for vibrant was rushed and has bugs. Because that could be us, we could have a rushed crappy edition of froyo. I understand that it makes it better and we can't do somthings without but if your life won't go on because you can't play some game on your phone (unless somehow you've got a job doing mobile gaming) then it might be time to look at some new hobbies or just pay your way out of contract so you can go get a phone with froyo that will make you happy as a little kid in a candy shop. But it must not be that bad if your willing to wait it out and hope one day you will wake up and see an OTA.

you never [/rant]
Anyways android is a grey point right now as with your reference to XP you could pay to upgrade to vista/7 (driver / hardware supporting of course) where with android everything is kept under wraps so by the manufacturer until weeks or sometimes months after their "official" software is released and only then can some reverse engineer everything to get what they need to develop.
Hopefully the future of android can be like computer operating systems. Manufacturers only make drivers that way google can push out their own updates or at least give us the ability to do our own.

You are very right as far as being able to pay for updates I was just meaning more of on a free level for that analogy, but yes very good point. And I too hope that it will someday be that easy.

About the Vibrant, their is no excuse for that buggy release at such a late push date. The carriers have had FroYo since November and and have taken their own sweet time working on it. To add insult to injury, Every other carrier with a Galaxy S phone has pushed out FroYo since November. They even started getting 2.2.1 about two weeks ago. Even the number five carrier in the states, U.S. Cellular, has had FroYo out for its captivate out for about a month and a half now. And guess what? That update went off without a hitch. I also like how you were able to boil down my argument into the my statement about Lame Castle, which in my circles is very important because I'm going to school for that kind of thing, and Vibrant update which I would have even if I didn't have months of knowledge on the situation here and everywhere else that Galaxies are sold. You just get your phone and feel like preaching to me on how I should just take this ****. I bought this phone months ago knowing I would be with it for two years and expecting on Samsung to hold up to their statement of by the end of the year. Its a month into 2011 and still nothing. If you find your epic fine on 2.1, all power to you. But their are people with docks, people that want to make hands free calls while on the road, and people who just want full access to the market, who have all the right in the world to complain over this mess.
Note: Make multiple threads on XDA is NOT the way to go about it though people.

I never said there was an excuse for it but I do like your note, bc that was one thing I was trying to get at in my original statement is topic after topic about how we don't have 2.2. And I said earlier to a guy its not the people such as yourself that have had th phone and been expecting the update its ppl that haven't had their phone long and are starting thread after thread asking or complaining about 2.2.

I decided to get THIS phone for the desired features AND the promise of 4G and 2.2 before the ed of the year. While you are entitled to your opinions, I certainly don't appreciate labeling and especially not when you do it from the safety of your keyboard. It just isn't called for.

I didnt read the majority of the posts, I apologize....just want to put in my two cents and I guarantee it'll still be on topic.
People here have the right to rant. They have the right to be angry. They bought a true high end Android phone and are still on 2.1. That's not right... I have an Evo and an Epic...and the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really just the Flash (I'm not including what Samsung through in there based off of the leaked roms. Because some of what they through in there was just polishing up the UI and stuff). And Flash isn't really that big of a deal, its just one of those things that is nice to have. But thats beside the point. It doesnt even matter if the only thing different between 2.2 and 2.1 was a damn ringtone...a high end Android phone should be updated. If you don't update these phones, then why would someone shell out extra money to buy another high end phone that will share the same exact features as a low end phone? True the High end will be faster, but it really needs to have something to separate itself from the low end phone and that something should be the fact that it will always be supported...
And this is the problem with Android and this is what makes me sick about it. Android is great...but dammit...they need to relax on these phones and focus on the ones that are out now. They just keep on taking our money, and its going to get to the point where no phones will be updated, they will just keep releasing phones with the new update. And they know people will straight up go buy the new phone just for that update, just to realize that it aint even good. I started with the Evo before the Epic and if I wouldve went from the Epic to the Evo just for 2.2, I wouldve been pissed the hell off. 2.2 is not worth it at all...well, lemme put it like this: 2.2 by itself is not worth it. Although it aint worth it, this high end phone should still have it. If the Evo has it...the Epic should have it. The Evo will probably get Gingerbread and that'll be a damn shame...it won't benefit from it at all...
I mean, when you look at this 2.2 update from different angles, you can see why people rant and get mad. They have the right to...now if we could just put all of it into one thread that would be a lot better than multiple threads...but its w/e.
Also, does anyone else think that nothing else will top Android but Android will "destroy" itself? Android has already destroyed itself with me, if the iPhone hits Sprint, I'm jumping ship.
