I'm one of the guys impatiently waiting on Samsung to stop being Apple, and patiently waiting on our devs to crack the MF3 build number.
My question is, whether to upgrade to MJ6 or stay on MF3. I don't know if MJ6 holds any hope of unlocking the bootloader any sooner than MF3 does.
Anyone have a clue?
I'm guessing mj6 will be locked tighter than mf3. At least you have safestrap on mf3. I'd wait and see what happens, mj6 isn't going to be that much better than mf3 anyway.

I have zero intentions of getting Samsung Smartgear, mostly cause I don't see too much use in spending 250 bucks on an item I won't be able to use effectively anyway. So MJ6 is pretty much useless to me.
MJ6 is either going to be locked down tighter, or Samsung has actually listened to their customers and unlocked the bootloaders. I know there are a LOT of disappointed customers who bought the S4 cause it was supposed to be an open ended, high end flagship device, and ended up being locked down as bad as iPhones.

4.3 is going to bring KNOX to our devices. Which could probably further hinder the unlock process. Note 3 has KNOX and i dont follow their forums to much so i dont know if they have had any success yet. I am on MF3 as well, and yet to root. If i was to root, I would be for the MJ6 modem. And use Safestrap with 4.3 roms. But I will probably upgrade because I dont use to many ROOT benefits to do it. I just want the 4.3 upgrade. So i will be sticking with official upgrades, but knowing att, I think 4.3 will be the last update this device will see.
I would probably move onto the S5 Google Edition, or Nexus 5

I would lvoe to move on to the Nexus 5, as the S5 probably won't be much better. The Nexus 5 has almost identical specs to the S4,my only problem is that I've spent 80 bucks on a lifeproof case for this S4. And I enjoy the lifeproof brand. They don't make anything for Nexus devices though, sadly.
If this whole boot loader lock is a sign of things to come than I may start looking elsewhere. Having a "jailed" phone is the reason I left apple in the first place. Idk, maybe I'll pick up the nexus 5...wondering if buying one will be as bad as the 4 was.

Yea. Even wihtout expandable storage, the HTC One and the Nexus 5 are looking better and better every day that IN don't have CyanogenMod on my S4

Samsung isn't trying to be Apple. AT&T is the one who try to lock down bootloader not Samsung. Thats why I hate ATT

One thing to concern is that the battery capacity of the nexus 5 is only 2300mAh and no external memory card. Thats why I don't like nexus phone

2300 mAh isn't bad. The S4 has 2600 and uses a MUUUCCCHH more battery draining operating system. My S3, running cyanogenmod would run all day on moderate use and I'd go to bed with 50% battery life left. And the S3 had the same 2300 mAh battery.
The removable storage for me is the big deal. And it's a tradeoff of between dealing with touchcrap UI and all it's bloatware and battery killing software, or trading a bit of storage for a MUCH better operating system and more open ended device. I just with they had released the enxus 5 in a 64gb model. If i could get a 64 GB HTC One for my Galaxy S4 I'd be happy.
Upgrade to 4.4, because mf3 is the worst baseband for rooting devices.

The locked bootloader hasn't been a deal breaker for me. Being able to root and use xposed framework lets me setup my phone the way I want and like it. I was wanting recovery options, but now that we have the Odin files to restore MF3 on our phone I'm not concerned with that anymore. Debloating and apps like Titanium, Tasker, Zooper, "Minimalistic Text" have all the options I need and want on my phone. I would like to develop another Rom, but it's ok as work keeps me rather busy anyways.

that's porbably the biggest difference between me and you.removable batteries don't bother me much. SD card space, meh. I have a laptop, I have an iPod. All I REALLY need storage for is my favorite songs, a couple videos, and apps.
What matters to me is the ability to customize. I'm thinking about the Nexus 5 right now. Just posted a thread in the Nexus 5 forums tog et opinions between it and the S4.
I have been searching this forum for the last couple days and have found conflicting information for my questions, so please understand I realize they have been answered elsewhere, but I'm still not clear on a couple things. I'm upgrading from a droid razr so I've been out of current tech for a bit, I've rooted and am currently running kitkat, but I'd like to get with the times, and the G2 seems to have great specs and the size screen I'd like. Basically I have 2 questions.
1. It appears there is no such thing as root in kitkat, will that always be the case due to changes in KK?
2. Is there other methods for running root apps and custom roms/recoveries? Cause I'm gonna miss that a lot if there is not.
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk
There is root and recovery for every lg g2 model other than verizon on kitkat I think, you just need to root and install recovery before you upgrade to kitkat after that it is just to flash everything you want
You can visit a custom stock (lg ui) 4.4.2 rom site like cloudystock if you want more info about how to do it, it is easy
Ah, but I'm on Verizon.

The Verizon lg g2 (vs980) is a great device cm is somewhat buggy and really buggy if you flash a custom kernel on cm 11 right now its pretty stable its a kernel called furnace oh and nice a droid RAZR I had an atrix 2 which is the Att version of the droid RAZR I'm guessing you have bmm or safestrap with kexec ROMs I miss my atrix 2 I love those old phones a lot,you will like the g2 its very fast good battery life you might wanna get one soon kk ota will be out soon it might make the g2 not be able to have custom ROMs for awhile

Yeah, I'm hoping to grab one on ebay in the next couple weeks. I've been doing the safestrap/bmm and kexec thing so long I'm kinda nervous about stepping away from the moto scene into something new. With the G3 and a million better new phones either already announced and on the way, or coming soon... I'd wait. I just got a G2 2 weeks ago, but only because my S4 died on me. So I used my son's upgrade for the G2, I'll give it to him in a month or 2 when the G3 comes out and I upgrade my line
Make sure that it has 4.2 and tell the seller not to update it because you will have to downgrade it to get root which lg has the worse flash utility ever trust me rsd lite is a million times better if you ever have to flash back you will miss rsd lite a lot PS I came from a Motorola to my moto finally crapped out

I'm not upgrading with a new contract. I'm still milking my unlimited data and I don't feel like giving it up. So any brand new phones hitting the market will be out of my price range. That's one big reason I'm looking at the g2, value per dollar.

I am right there with you. I have a GS3 and was not interested in the GS5, but the features of the G2. I know it's not cutting edge but with all the reviews and comments it's certainly a nice upgrade from what I have and the window case functionality is just what I really wanted. Toss some KitKat on there Verizon and I'll be VERY pleased.

No exploit has been found for 4.4 so as far as I know, we will be in the same situation that we are in the S5.

I love my OG Pro...like looove it, but when ATT offered me an early upgrade (1 year early) on my line, I opted for the S5...not knowing that it was bootloader locked.
Depending on the info released today and when it comes available, I may be returning my GS5 for the G3. Because you know... LG > Samsung in my book. (Even though I had both Note and Note 2)

G3 is coming to all of the big 4. There's no chance in hell it will come with bootloader unlocked when getting the device through the carrier. If you want an unlocked bootloader, but it from 3rd party reseller or hope for a new exploit.

You guys might be real happy about this, I just read this article, where they did a benchmark with an International version the LG-F400S LG G3 variant which apparently works on AT&T's LTE network. My guess while not only does an International version work on AT&T which is amazing news, but chances are, wouldn't that also mean that the device in theory would also be factory Unlocked?!? :good:

You might also consider the G2, spec wise very similar to the S5, but can be rooted easily and custom recovery installed (not T-Mobile) without having to downgrade the OS from Kit Kat first. The first step requires a computer using IOROOT25, which roots the phone, the an app that installs on the phone called Autorec, installs recovery. Easy as pie. I hope the G3 will be just as easy.

I looked into getting the G2 before I decided on my Optimus G Pro, but the lack of an SD slot instantly turned me away.. I've rooted many phones and installed more roms and kernels than I can count.. I'm studying development right now trying to get the hang of it so I can develop roms/kernels etc.. Thanks for your input!
I need a new phone bad and the LG G3 has everything I want. Sleek design, Wireless Charging, Removable battery, etc. If ATT locks down the bootloader, I'll be looking elsewhere.
I walked into an ATT store the other day and said I'm looking for a new phone. He said everyone really likes the GS5. I rolled my eyes and said no thanks. He had a puzzled look on his face and then I told him I'm not buying a bootloader locked phone. He just mumbled, "uh ya" and walked away. I walked out.
I was going to wait for the nexus 6 but that is dead now.
Looks like HTC is the only option these days for root and custom roms unless you go Oppo or One Plus One.

The problem is having to pay full price for the phone. Yes, I know contracts end up being more expensive, but not everyone has about $700 in their pocket to drop on a phone.

By you saying earlier that you dont have the $700 to purchase a new one, I take it you are not using an upgrade. If that is the case you can buy the 64GB Nexus from Google or somewhere else and use it on Verizon. They all have the same hardware and all are able to be used on any carrier out of the box.

Can't say I'm surprised. I was just happy to get it to 5.x. I'd be willing to be Samsung is going to sit on their hand for a bit to see if Apple releases iPad Pro sales figures and if they're good they'll build an updated Note Pro 12.2.

To me it is 3 months older than my S6 edge and I paid top dollar for the SOB! It should get at least one major update to the next gen OS. Mine came with Lollipop. It is not at all a reach whatsoever to expect Marshmallow.

It came out in February 2014.
If memory serves, years ago (i think it was google i/o 2011?) Google asked major manufacturers to commit to update support for a period of 18 months after launch of a device. Since the note pro was announced in January of 2014 we are well beyond that time frame so yeah, it's not a surprise to not see a 6.0 update coming.
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
I'm in no hurry for Marshmallow. I was all geeked up about getting Lollipop. It looks different, but I have seen no difference in battery life or performance in coming from KitKat. Unless Marshmallow is going to introduce something really new (not just be a matter of a few internal changes and a new skin) then I'm good with continuing to use Lollipop.
I'm actually downgrading back to KitKat tonight just so I can root again. =(

By the way isn't the note pro a flagship tablet? Cause if then we still can have a hope for an 6.0 build... Sammobile.com claims that all flagship since begin of 2014 will get 6.0...

It does introduce something really new. "Doze", it does wonders to battery life wherever it was tried...

Meh . . As an advanced user with a rooted device and a few useful tools (Greenify and Amplify for Xposed) I'm able to get standby power consumption on my wifi Note Pro down to a near negligible trickle. I just forgot my Note Pro at the office last night; having unplugged it from the charger at 100% I failed to put it into my bag before leaving for the night. I just got back to the office 12hrs later to find the tablet at 97% . . it had sat on wifi the whole time and my emails were still all synced.
No doubt that for the average user who doesn't want to go through the effort or doesn't want to root Doze takes a lot of the effort out of accomplishing better battery life. Good stuff for sure, just not necessarily mind blowingly good IMO.
It's posts like these that manufacturers never pay attention to. They are in the business of making NEW product. They do NoT see profit in supporting previously sold product. Sad and myopic.
But...the note pro 12.2 has hardware specs that are hard to beat.
I can see the little guy in Korea going crazy trying to figure out how to monetize having made a great product that people, get this, "want to keep".
