[Q] Rooting Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on verizon with 4.4.4 - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched and usually only find mods and roms for an already rooted device. I realize there is a possibility that this hasn't been done yet, since verizon is a bunch of *****es and doesn't like to let people have their own way, but I'm optimistic that some one has figured out how to root the SM-N900V running 4.4.4...

Tell me that's not true, can I really not root my phone now that I'm on 4.4.4? I've been away from the customizing scene for a while.

Drew is correct. No root on 4.4.4. Most devs abandoned ship for greener pastures. Either deal with it or sell it and get another rootable device.

Well I guess it does force my hand a bit. I've been debating upgrading to the Note 4 or going to the Nexus 6, was just hoping to get some more millage out of my Note 3. Don't have the $700(ish) for a new phone right now.

Verizon note 4 supposedly has the same limitation.

Definitely NO root on Note 4 unless you buy the developer version directly from Samsung.

Today's news just keeps getting worse and worse. Found out that as of now, Verizon will only be selling the 32gb version of the Nexus as well.

By you saying earlier that you dont have the $700 to purchase a new one, I take it you are not using an upgrade. If that is the case you can buy the 64GB Nexus from Google or somewhere else and use it on Verizon. They all have the same hardware and all are able to be used on any carrier out of the box.

Actually, I am using an upgrade, the wife's to be honest lol. If I had the cash, I could just go buy the 64gb elsewhere and bring it over.

[Q] All of us who are getting Verizon Note 3 at launch....

To insure our best chances of being able to root, what should we do? I've never rooted anything before so this will be my first time but I hear about alot of problems with Knox and what not. When I pick up my phone, should I not allow them to touch it or watch what they are doing so they can't install anything? What should I disable right when I get home? I'm a noob to this and I searched and didn't see anything,,atleast I don't think so.
They don't install anything on your phone at activation that will affect root capability... it's all in there already when the phone is loaded with verizon's version of touchwiz 4.3 ... don't worry about what you're doing with your phone as far as apps or whatever ... it won't hinder your ability to root if that becomes available to us... just chill and let the developers hack at this thing and see what they come up with... BUT ... don't hold your breath... our bootloader will be locked on verizon... that will make things impossible... dev's will gravitate towards the unlocked versions that are easier/possible to work on... and we will be left behind unless some weird exploit is stumbled upon... learn to love your stock device when you're on verizon... it's less stressfulness
I would not take any updates if they are pushed out immediately after launch.

Stock phone is wonderful minus a few omissions. For me it's no wifi toggle, continuous home screen and app drawer and ability to not have all apps in the multi window pane. That to me is worth root. Ugh

I agree ... I can live without custom ROMs/Kernels, but no root would be rough. No Root Explorer, no AdAway, no LMT Launcher would be a rough adjustment. Ugh, and I forgot all about that stupid Verizon WiFi notification nag Oh boy ... Stock is going to be HARD! LOL

I'm going to ask, capability should exist, same model is unlocked in UK and others. I'm also not going to use it as a phone right off, Wi-Fi only, which might help. If refused I might wait to see if a developer version will show up.

Good luck, since when does VZW/Big Red get developer version of phones? I wish they did, the HTC One dev edition would've been great 6 months ago. Only thing on my mind now is 3GB RAM on Note 3.

When wouldn't we get root with a locked bootloader? And devs on Verizon aren't just going to switch over to another carrier for a phone. Have you checked out some of the crazy stuff they've been able to accomplish on Motorola phones? Or safestrap for the locked bootloader s4? Well be totally fine. I'd be surprised if we didn't have root on launch day.

Deciding whether or not to upgrade to 4.3?

I'm one of the guys impatiently waiting on Samsung to stop being Apple, and patiently waiting on our devs to crack the MF3 build number.
My question is, whether to upgrade to MJ6 or stay on MF3. I don't know if MJ6 holds any hope of unlocking the bootloader any sooner than MF3 does.
Anyone have a clue?
I'm guessing mj6 will be locked tighter than mf3. At least you have safestrap on mf3. I'd wait and see what happens, mj6 isn't going to be that much better than mf3 anyway.

I have zero intentions of getting Samsung Smartgear, mostly cause I don't see too much use in spending 250 bucks on an item I won't be able to use effectively anyway. So MJ6 is pretty much useless to me.
MJ6 is either going to be locked down tighter, or Samsung has actually listened to their customers and unlocked the bootloaders. I know there are a LOT of disappointed customers who bought the S4 cause it was supposed to be an open ended, high end flagship device, and ended up being locked down as bad as iPhones.

4.3 is going to bring KNOX to our devices. Which could probably further hinder the unlock process. Note 3 has KNOX and i dont follow their forums to much so i dont know if they have had any success yet. I am on MF3 as well, and yet to root. If i was to root, I would be for the MJ6 modem. And use Safestrap with 4.3 roms. But I will probably upgrade because I dont use to many ROOT benefits to do it. I just want the 4.3 upgrade. So i will be sticking with official upgrades, but knowing att, I think 4.3 will be the last update this device will see.
I would probably move onto the S5 Google Edition, or Nexus 5

I would lvoe to move on to the Nexus 5, as the S5 probably won't be much better. The Nexus 5 has almost identical specs to the S4,my only problem is that I've spent 80 bucks on a lifeproof case for this S4. And I enjoy the lifeproof brand. They don't make anything for Nexus devices though, sadly.
If this whole boot loader lock is a sign of things to come than I may start looking elsewhere. Having a "jailed" phone is the reason I left apple in the first place. Idk, maybe I'll pick up the nexus 5...wondering if buying one will be as bad as the 4 was.

One thing to concern is that the battery capacity of the nexus 5 is only 2300mAh and no external memory card. Thats why I don't like nexus phone

2300 mAh isn't bad. The S4 has 2600 and uses a MUUUCCCHH more battery draining operating system. My S3, running cyanogenmod would run all day on moderate use and I'd go to bed with 50% battery life left. And the S3 had the same 2300 mAh battery.
The removable storage for me is the big deal. And it's a tradeoff of between dealing with touchcrap UI and all it's bloatware and battery killing software, or trading a bit of storage for a MUCH better operating system and more open ended device. I just with they had released the enxus 5 in a 64gb model. If i could get a 64 GB HTC One for my Galaxy S4 I'd be happy.
Upgrade to 4.4, because mf3 is the worst baseband for rooting devices.

The locked bootloader hasn't been a deal breaker for me. Being able to root and use xposed framework lets me setup my phone the way I want and like it. I was wanting recovery options, but now that we have the Odin files to restore MF3 on our phone I'm not concerned with that anymore. Debloating and apps like Titanium, Tasker, Zooper, "Minimalistic Text" have all the options I need and want on my phone. I would like to develop another Rom, but it's ok as work keeps me rather busy anyways.

that's porbably the biggest difference between me and you.removable batteries don't bother me much. SD card space, meh. I have a laptop, I have an iPod. All I REALLY need storage for is my favorite songs, a couple videos, and apps.
What matters to me is the ability to customize. I'm thinking about the Nexus 5 right now. Just posted a thread in the Nexus 5 forums tog et opinions between it and the S4.

Possible AT&T N3 Safestrap?

I thought that this video would give some hope to the AT&T N3 community. Looks like the Verizon N3 is going to get (or got) a program called Safestrap which is allowing them to install custom ROMs and other things on their version of the N3. This should be made applicable to the AT&T version soon. It may not be as flexible as a unlocked bootloader but does give some hope of being able to have the phone the way you like it.

Oh man let's hope for the best. This is all kind of new to me having these issues. Even my One X was a pain in the ass, but not THIS bad with unlocking.
Will safe strap include being able to flash a kernel? That's honestly the #1 reason for an unlocked bootloader for me. I love playing around with cpu and gpu parameters trying to achieve best battery to performance. Plus faux123 has his kernel and coming from it with a nexus 4 I wish I had it on this device.
Safe strap will not allow kernel flashing. Only ROMs. It high-jacks boot up and redirects the device to boot from a secondary partition you create on the internal memory. You will lose space on internal memory to use safestrap. Although the Verizon folks (me included) have been able to overwrite the factory partition to avoid space lose. If you want to flash kernels you need to drop the 700 dollars on development edition of the phone. I can't believe how dead the development thread is for this device I was just looking for some options for a friend of mine who just got his AT&T N3.
I got more jelly beans than jelly belly, on my S3, S4, and both my Notes
Guess I should have stuck with nexus. Oh well ill trade the ability to flash kernels and roms for a removable battery and an sd card and large screen.
I'm pretty sure the DEVS within these forums will eventually find a way to crack the system. It's just a matter of time and patience.

Dissappointment - locked bootloader?

My previous phone (Galaxy SkyRocket) was a fantastic phone, but decided to upgrade since I could get the S4 for $99 and the SR was having trouble charging.
I come to find out there will be no rooting/Recovery/ROM because of the --- Mod Edit, masked profanity is senseless ---locked bootloader/MF3 Firmware from AT&T. And it doesn't sound like there is a good shot any of this will be cracked.
Very tempted to return the phone and get something else. Should I just hang in there and wait for a reliable root/recovery method or return the phone?

Its been 9 months since the s4 was released and no exploit has been found yet besides on MDL and safestrap on mf3 but then again 4.3 just came out very recently and you can root your phone. I'd say turn your phone back in and get a nexus 5. Or you can cough up the extra cash if you want a gs4 and get the Google play edition. But overall I love my s4.

Huge let down. I hate bloat ware. This may be my last Samsung phone. I might go back to HTC or check other offerings when the time comes. I miss all the things you could do with a rooted phone running a custom ROM.
I would return it before it's too late.

LG G2 = Nexus 5. Same specs, same processor and everything more or less. Just Nexus 5 is unlocked and will have more support than any other phones usually.
safestrap makes the MF3 tolerable but yeah, not being able to dabble with kitkat really sucks. Since this is my work phone I'll probably just use safestrap with a stripped down stock. At the moment I have graviton which is acceptable but IMHO still has too much bloatware on it.
Anyone have any thoughts about selling it on Ebay?

Still love the hardware. The display is awesome. Removable battery, sd card. It is a dream phone. So aggravating that it has been hobbled like it is. Thought I was getting a great deal when I got it on eBay. Coming from s3 I just figured it would be easy to mod. Didn't do my research before buying. Still a great phone but really limited. So I am kind of stuck with it now. Maybe I could resell it and try to get one of those unlocked ones but crap they are expensive. I hope somehow it will get liberated.

This is what I am leaning towards. Just deal with the crap/bloatware and hope some breakthrough occurs with these boot loaders.
I think Ebay is gonna be too much of a hassle and the handset is really nice, although not being able to tether is SEVERELY annoying.
Thanks to all for the advice.
This thread is depressing to me lol (phone comes in tomorrow....)
G2 has whack design with its buttons and and no sdcard..
Anyway I will probably keep the s4 (hopeful root) till something good comes out (was hoping xperia z1 would come to att) and then give the phone to my mom....
Everybody should call Samsung 1800# tomorrow around same time and complain to unlock BL (or AT&T which ever it is)
Surge and a few other Devs are working their brains out past few weeks (hopefully picking up traction) and get unlock)

Maybe somebody can help them
Traded my s4 for a HTC one. Don't regret my choice at all.
Down with locked bootloaders!

True that! I just hope this isn't locked down like the GS5
They didn't lock down the m8...hopefully they won't lock the g3 down..if they do I'll probably go with the m8.

It most likely will be lock down. The loki exploit that was used to root the G2 was patched with android 4.4.

Being on a ATT One X I'm out of the loop has any exploit been found for 4.4? Or will we be in the same boat as the GS5 guys? How is the M8 doing?

No exploit has been found for 4.4 so as far as I know, we will be in the same situation that we are in the S5.
HTC is a different story cause they provide a method to unlock the bootloader via HTC dev.

I'm so hoping AT&T gets the G3 (and hoping even more the bootloader is unlocked).. I have the LG OG Pro, and LOVE it, but ready for something newer.. Would have got the G2, but the lack of a SD card slot turned me away from it.. Just hope we get lucky! :fingers-crossed:

I love my OG Pro...like looove it, but when ATT offered me an early upgrade (1 year early) on my line, I opted for the S5...not knowing that it was bootloader locked.
Depending on the info released today and when it comes available, I may be returning my GS5 for the G3. Because you know... LG > Samsung in my book. (Even though I had both Note and Note 2)

G3 is coming to all of the big 4. There's no chance in hell it will come with bootloader unlocked when getting the device through the carrier. If you want an unlocked bootloader, but it from 3rd party reseller or hope for a new exploit.

You guys might be real happy about this, I just read this article, where they did a benchmark with an International version the LG-F400S LG G3 variant which apparently works on AT&T's LTE network. My guess while not only does an International version work on AT&T which is amazing news, but chances are, wouldn't that also mean that the device in theory would also be factory Unlocked?!? :good:
Here's the article.

You might also consider the G2, spec wise very similar to the S5, but can be rooted easily and custom recovery installed (not T-Mobile) without having to downgrade the OS from Kit Kat first. The first step requires a computer using IOROOT25, which roots the phone, the an app that installs on the phone called Autorec, installs recovery. Easy as pie. I hope the G3 will be just as easy.

I looked into getting the G2 before I decided on my Optimus G Pro, but the lack of an SD slot instantly turned me away.. I've rooted many phones and installed more roms and kernels than I can count.. I'm studying development right now trying to get the hang of it so I can develop roms/kernels etc.. Thanks for your input!
I need a new phone bad and the LG G3 has everything I want. Sleek design, Wireless Charging, Removable battery, etc. If ATT locks down the bootloader, I'll be looking elsewhere.
I walked into an ATT store the other day and said I'm looking for a new phone. He said everyone really likes the GS5. I rolled my eyes and said no thanks. He had a puzzled look on his face and then I told him I'm not buying a bootloader locked phone. He just mumbled, "uh ya" and walked away. I walked out.
I was going to wait for the nexus 6 but that is dead now.
Looks like HTC is the only option these days for root and custom roms unless you go Oppo or One Plus One.

You can get the international version of all the phones you mentioned and they come with unlocked bootloaders. Look in the XDA forum for those phones (S5) and they probably have custom rom and a root process.....

The problem is having to pay full price for the phone. Yes, I know contracts end up being more expensive, but not everyone has about $700 in their pocket to drop on a phone.
I was thinking of picking up one of the Korean version on ebay. How can I know for sure that I will get 4g on AT&T?
