EDIT - I found my issue. There was an app storing a large amount of data that was not showing up in the storage setting chart for some reason. I do want to share how I tracked it down. I used the app "DiskUsage" (in the google play store), which I saw mentioned after more searching....
Moderators, please remove if you find this unnecessary or unhelpful.
I'm a noob to using this site, so I cannot determine if I'm supposed to be able to upload an image here. So no screenshot, but I'll give you the numbers instead. My phone seems to be showing incorrect available storage. I have the 32Gb Moto X Pure. Just got it last week. Stock, unrooted. It shows:
24 GB Total Space
1.61 gb Available
6.38 gb Apps
17.07 MB pictures,videos
216 KB Audio
8 kb downloads
331 MB cached data
149MB miscellaneous
I do have an SD card that seems to be showing correct data usage. It's a 64GB card, using about 3GB. Chart seems to be correct
I moved a lot of apps over to external storage when I started getting out of storage prompts. Then I waited for everything to load int he storage settings and noticed that the usage is way off. Has anyone seen this on the Moto X Pure and can help with what I could possibly do to fix it (without root if possible)? I searched here and on other sites and could not find anything definitive. Maybe I missed it. Please advise.
Thanks in advance...

For some reason my xda 11 says i have 91.68 mb allocated for storage
yet the last time i looked at it there was only 28mb in use.
I have no pictures or sound files no extra programmes and have only 2.2 mb of data above 64K. I've closed down all my active programs and performed a soft reset yet nothing seems to help.
Any ideas??
I'm a bit confused about your terminology here - I read it as you have 98MB allocated, 28MB in use, and therefore 70MB free - does this correspond with what you're getting in the Settings-Memory applet?
I'm confused because I can't see a problem with the above - although it only leaves you with 29ishMB allocated for program execution it's a perfectly reasonable config. You can change allocation between storage and program by sliding the slider. You probably know all this, I've probably got the wrong end of the stick.
Looks like a bit has gone somewhere, I have 126.03 to begin with, you are out by a bit as yours only adds up to 119.68.
memory loss
ok sorry if i'm not explaining myself properly
i am currently looking my memory settings
which tells me i have 91.69 MB in use for storage leaving 10.19 free
and 18.06 MB in use for program and only 6.09 free
now what concerns me is that having been through file explorer i don't know what is taking up so much storage memory especially as i have no voice or picture files or have got any additional programs
firstly there is insufficent memory to run transcriber properly and secondly what happened to increase my storage use from 28mb to 91 when i hadn't even used it.
(i haven't even connected my xda to the net yet)
Any comments would be appreciated
cheers john
Hmm 90odd MB in use is indeed strange. Are you sure there are no large files anywhere? Have you installed anything recently? Have you made a recording and forgotten to stop it manually so that it filled the available memory (although you'd still find this as a large file). It's not normal for PPC apps to take up such amounts of storage, and without a directory listing or access to your device it's unfortunately going to be pretty much impossible to work out whats wrong.
Incidentally. storage vs program memory allocation can be automatically adjusted by the device itself if it needs to.
Check for camera files, or do a backup and do a hard reset back to factory settings, then look at it from there and check it as you install programs/files.
memory loss
Thanks for that guys I can't explain it either
i've got 02 data support looking in to it and they're stuck as well so they are escalating it ie sending it to someone else. I should hear back today or tomorrow.
i guess in the end i'll probably have to do a hard reset. I'm just worried that it might come back or i have a virus even though they don't exist on ppcs at the moment.
i want to get a 1gb storage card any tips ?
ps thanks again if you ever get arrested (not that you will) send me a private message and i'll look after you. (I'm in the old bailey tomorrow on a murder case)
Trying to install an apk and my phone won't let me. I get "Out of Space" App could not be viewed. Free up some space on your phone and try again and I get a button for "Manage applications" so I can delete apps. My phone storage reads
SD
7.38GB total
5.63GB available
Internal
6.60GB total
6.32GB available
Anyone else have this happen to them?
Just in case I rebooted my phone but still have the same issue.

Not all of the internal memory can be used for applications. While the phone is advertised to have 8GB of internal memory, that 6.60GB (6.32GB avail) you see is treated like the SD card memory. Apps can't be installed on that portion.
The internal memory for applications is 748MB.

That blows. Can't wait for root so I can use apps2sd. Thanks
Really? Coming from the droid 748 is a godsend.
I agree 748mb is gift compared to the others. I just read somewhere that the Evo only will have 358mb free.
I am curious how many apps you have. Perhaps one of them is screwed up somehow?
I only have 74 apps listed in my app drawer and I have 643MB left.

I haven't counted them but I just noticed that in Phone Memory it says
Total Space
748MB
Available Space
514MB
Something must be wrong...right?

Yes, something sounds wrong.
Turn it off and try again maybe? Or maybe there is something wrong with that one app you are trying to install? Or maybe something got corrupted and you need to factory reset.
I don't recall seeing that error reported elsewhere.
I dont feel like counting mine but Have a bunch plus atless 12 3-D games. Still have 427mb available. Did you maybe mess with the internal card. My brother messed up his sd card on the Moto droid other day just by downloading a pic. Only way to fix it was to reformat it.
Not that the number of apps matters (now that we see there is over 500mb avail for the OP), but I just count the number of rows in my app drawer - took < 10 seconds? (oh, and multiply that by 4) Just an FYI ...
But anyway, I'd keep it to under 300 apps, not so much for space but for OS stability?
Some apps need to be uninstalled to be updated or you'll get that message.
Hello everyone,
Have anyone heard about some sort of filesystem extension to the Storage Card? I once read somewhere, that it could fool WiMo, extending the windows folder (maybe other folders too) into the storage card. I tried to google it, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone knows what this is? Or any other technique to extend the internal storage other than the well known tips and installing/moving the apps to storage card?
Thanks much,
Fernando

Hello Angelo, thanks for the quick reply!
Before someone yells at me that every noob should read the stickies and search before posting, let me explain that I'm actually looking for some light on this "filesystem extension" or something similar... I guess I should have written (already edited) and named the thread more carefully, since I'm not really running out of space, just looking for options on extending the internal storage...
As for the stickies, I already have them applied - tip 67 (Save Some Space in Phone Storage Memory), 97 (Save Camera Photos Direct to Storage Card) or latter on the thread (moving the bluetooth inbox, ringtones and opera cache to the SD card), I'm aware of them and already have them applied, but yet if we keep installing every nice piece of software we find interesting, eventually we are going to run out of internal storage, even with several GBs free on storage card, but I know that installing a bunch of stuff it's not the expected or usual behavior.
Thanks again for the prompt and polite reply.
You won't run out of internal storage, delete My Device/Application Data/HTC/HTC ALBUM contents and the files inside 'Cache' as well, you can hold up to 20 meg or more in there.
Another idea is to delete My Device/Windows/Rings and just use your custom ring tone, message tones, if you use a decent file manager i.e. Resco you can uncover the hidden tones and delete them also, saving you around 8 meg or so.
My Device/My Wallpapers will save you another ~4 or so.
After flashing an updated Energy ROM I usually have exactly 38 meg of used storage, and after a few days of cache it usually settles to around 50-55 meg, I clear the HTC Album cache from time to time and it always keeps it well under 60 mbs.
I prefer to keep things on the internal storage (I mean system files, caching etc.) as it just seems faster than keeping it on the SD card, and it will also save you a wee bit of battery life as it won't need to keep accessing the card.

Well then, since You already tweaked all possible items unfortunately this will be the maximum You can get.
Since Nov. 2009 - when I received my HD2 - I carefully read every post concerning int. memory and now with approx. 50 apps installed (all to storage card) I can keep the internal mem filled at 70% (approx. 54MB free mem).
Never forget: emails, sms, mms, contacts etc. are stored internally: the more You keep, the more mem is eaten up.
Since I use only one ringtone and only two avatars (1 x male, 1 x female) for contacts, no animated wallpapers and one selfmade background I deleted all other ringtones, wallpapers and anims.
If Copilot is installed on Your device move it to sd card also (PocketMechanic worked best for me to do this), makes up for another 10 MB of free space.
Enjoy
Thank you both for the reply!
Well, right now I have about 63 megs of free space in the internal storage, but there are still some apps I haven't installed after I flashed this new ROM.
A month ago I was trying almost every app - freewares and sharewares - to sort out what I really need to buy and which free apps work for me, but before I could test half of the apps and games I downloaded, I ran out of space. It wasn't really a problem since I was planning to hard reset my HD2 and then keep only the nice ones, but I decided to search for a possible solution and then read somewhere about this "filesystem extension"... But seems that I misplaced the bookmark and never found anything else on this... I guess it was some kind of scam...
Once again, thank you for taking the time to read and reply!
A file system extension to move the operating systems to SD card would not be a good idea, the performance would be very slow as access speeds are not good.
As for the htc album cache eating alot of memory there is the possibility to use some of the phones RAM (as the HD2 has way more than you need) as a virtual storage card or RAMDISK. You can move the HTC album cache, opera cache and manilla/windows temp files here.
This has the advantage of removing all these junk files everytime you reboot your phone and also making opera and the album run faster as writing cache files to RAM is much faster than writing to ROM
Can someone help me figure out what's up with my storage space on my N7? I'm getting a notification saying "Storage space running out". According to this screenshot, I should have about 8.1 GB used. With 13.24 total that should leave me with about 5 GB free. Now I understand there are some other things that take up space, but how can that be over 4.5 GB's worth? Anyone have any ideas on what might be taking up all that space, and if there's anything I can do about it? I have a bunch of pinned documents on my Google drive, but they should be more than a few MB. I don't want to do a full reset and have to re-root and re-add all my apps and documents and media. I've tried rebooting a couple of times with no change. I can add any additional information that would be helpful.
I have the same problem, made a thread and no suggestions. Is this a hardware issue? I don't see any similar issues except for Nexus 7's.

I fixed it by formatting the internal sdcard through TWRP.
Thank for your solution, it works for me

For future reference, the flash usage reported in that image that you posted is not all inclusive, it only reports storage used by apps/music/videos/downloads, as it says. The reported free space should be correct though, but if you add up the usage that it shows it won't necessarily make sense with the free space that it reports because other things use storage that it is not reporting.
For some reason, I seem to be running out of space on my 128gb version of the OP5.
As you can see from the screenshots, System data shows as 28.8gb and in the Storage + Memory it states other is 38gb . This can't be true as the largest folder is my DCIM folder which is 36.8gb which is accounted for in the "Images and Videos" section.
I've had a look through myself at various folders and just don't understand where this 28.8gb is. My friend who also has a OP5 has this value at around 6 gb which is understandable for the OS, but this can't be typical as owners of the 64gb model would be complaining about this for sure.
Any suggestions? I'd rather not convert to uploading all my images to google photos to save space.

Thanks for the input but I realised there was an update for the app I was using to calculate storage use in terms of support for Oreo. I was under the impression Spotify was taking up 10-15gb of usage, but in actual fact it was just over 30gb. This clears things up.
Use this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobile_infographics_tools.mydrive
Used it once to know what took space on an S6 Edge when S Voice took 9 GB for nothing. You should be able to see what's the curlprit.
