Out of Space - Droid Incredible General

Trying to install an apk and my phone won't let me. I get "Out of Space" App could not be viewed. Free up some space on your phone and try again and I get a button for "Manage applications" so I can delete apps. My phone storage reads
SD
7.38GB total
5.63GB available
Internal
6.60GB total
6.32GB available
Anyone else have this happen to them?
Just in case I rebooted my phone but still have the same issue.

Not all of the internal memory can be used for applications. While the phone is advertised to have 8GB of internal memory, that 6.60GB (6.32GB avail) you see is treated like the SD card memory. Apps can't be installed on that portion.
The internal memory for applications is 748MB.

That blows. Can't wait for root so I can use apps2sd. Thanks

Really? Coming from the droid 748 is a godsend.

I agree 748mb is gift compared to the others. I just read somewhere that the Evo only will have 358mb free.

I am curious how many apps you have. Perhaps one of them is screwed up somehow?
I only have 74 apps listed in my app drawer and I have 643MB left.

I haven't counted them but I just noticed that in Phone Memory it says

748MB
Available Space
514MB
Something must be wrong...right?

Yes, something sounds wrong.
Turn it off and try again maybe? Or maybe there is something wrong with that one app you are trying to install? Or maybe something got corrupted and you need to factory reset.
I don't recall seeing that error reported elsewhere.

I dont feel like counting mine but Have a bunch plus atless 12 3-D games. Still have 427mb available. Did you maybe mess with the internal card. My brother messed up his sd card on the Moto droid other day just by downloading a pic. Only way to fix it was to reformat it.

Not that the number of apps matters (now that we see there is over 500mb avail for the OP), but I just count the number of rows in my app drawer - took < 10 seconds? (oh, and multiply that by 4) Just an FYI ...
But anyway, I'd keep it to under 300 apps, not so much for space but for OS stability?

Some apps need to be uninstalled to be updated or you'll get that message.

And which memory because you are talking about installing apps when that has nothing directly to do with operating memory.
Installing on mem card doesn't "save" anything in this regard.
I'm also low on Storage-mem on the phone - even though I install programs on the memorycard whenever possible (and of course put my pictures, music and videos on the mem-card as well!).
I have 177mb free Program-memory on the phone but only 9.3mb storage-mem.
This makes programs such as the YouTube-app very unhappy as it seems to only be able to cache to internal storage-memory :-(
On older versions of WM you could change how the phone used it's internal memory with a slider in settings.
The phone also seemed to adjust this automatically as it became necessary.
Now however it seems that this possibility is gone (both manual and automatic adjustment).
I hope it is only my ignorance speaking so here's hoping that someone has a solution to this problem (fingers crossed)

If you have used up storage mem then that's it but what have you installed to use it.
Mine shows 152Mb storage and 252Mb program memory free. 27 apps installed and everything running fine.
Do you install a lot of application from the Marketplace? If so, this defaults to install on internal memory
I have exactly the same issue, and it's very frustrating. Pretty crazy really as I can't use the phone for anything that uses device storage. No youtube, no media busy web pages and some apps refuse to run smoothly, or at all.
Like you, I'm always having to delete Opera & IE's cache files just to keep the phone functioning! I've also deleted all my Co-Pilot files on the card and the device - this helped a little and gave me another 5 or 6 MB of device space.
With all cache's cleared and around 30 programs installed (all on the card) I now only have 7.8MB of free device storage, which disappears within a few minutes when using Opera.
Out of the 336MB of program storage I have filled 153MB with 182MB free - I wish I could control how much memory is allocated to the program memory and device memory.
Very strange...I have any large applications like games, copliot etc installed on my SD card, only small apps on my internal memory...
Total storage: 200.15MB
Used storage: 119.99MB
Free storage: 80.16MB
Total program: 336.93MB
Used program: 170.54MB
Free profram: 166.89MB
i have a 16 meg Ram Disk (see the 'ram disk' thread ) and my system temp folders and caches, plus opera cache have been moved to it. Opera now runs really fast, and the cache is no longer taking up the storage memory, plus when you soft reset it clears out the cache too.

Wow thats so confusing!
Just tell us
Storage memory (where the apps are installed)
Program memory (where the apps and OS run)
You should have plenty of mem to install ail your apps and run them without a problem.
Try installing them all to phone because you have enough mem

I have since day 1 installed all my programs to the memory card apart from a couple of programs and hotfixes which I though would be smarter if I installed to the device - but these are tiny. I have also set my marketplace to default to the memory card and removed all co-pilot files and set all podcasts to the microSD too.
Total Storage: 200.27
Used Storage: 191.48
Free Storage: 8.79 (whohooo, that's much bigger than normal!)
Total Program: 336.93
Used Program: 143.89
Free Program: 192.93
SD Card: Over 2GB's free
I really have no idea what's using all my internal storage.
Yep - that's about the same for me.
Only a few apps are installed directly on the phone (the ones that install without letting the user decide where they want them) so what's hogging my phone-storage is beyond me...
But I really don't need close to 200 mb of program-memory, is there really no way to use some of this memory for storage - as was possible with earlier versions of WM?
Have you tried importing to PC, such as pictures and other things, using Windows Mobile Centre?

I can't help but think that you've missed the point - when the storage memory is full the phone ceases to function properly!
It uses this area of storage for the cache files for the browser and for applications such as you tube. When I start the youtube app, if it opens at all, it will say 'Critically low on system memory...etc' and shut down after playing a few seconds. If I have many tabs open in opera the same memory problem occurs.
The 'Device Storage' partition is full (with what I don't know) whilst the 'Device Program' partition is almost empty. We have no control over what sizes those partitions are. Maybe i've got it all wrong but either way it's really limiting the usefulness of the phone.

yes there is. as I mentioned in post 9, I use a ram disk for my temp files and cache. lives in program memory but shows up as a (fast) memory card.
search for the ram disk thread.
also, as regards figuring out what is taking up all the space, use a file manager (don't forget to unhide all files) and search for everything over....say....1 meg.

No I haven't missed the point, I just don't get the problem and I'm trying to figure out why not?
And that would help you. Something is causing certain phones to behave this way. I use youtube and opera and never have to clear out anything.
I currently have 36 apps showing on my start menu screen and memory is showing as Storage 152.13 Mb free and program 313.80 Mb free.
I run Titanium (not manilla UI) and I have LeoLite ROM installed.
Something in that setup is causing the phone to respond differently!

app storage

so I read that it has 710mb of rom for app storage, so can you not store apps on the 8 gigs (6.5)of internal mem?

Currently, you cannot store apps on the 6+ gig partition of the internal memory.
However, when you think about it, the 748MB allocated as internal storage, for apps, is already more total application storage than what most people allocate for themselves when using apps2sd on a rooted phone. For example, if you read some ROM threads, you should find reference to a suggested 512MB partition on SD card for apps2sd and the likelihood of never filling it up. So, even without root and apps2sd we have more apps storage than pretty much everyone else.
Aside from plain old app storage though, I am very curious to see what developers can do with these partitions and all that internal memory once root is achieved.
Well the good thing nowadays is that alot of developers store files on your sd card also, so you save alot of your app space. I've installed every app that i wanted (I've downloaded over 60) and i have 633mb left
plus most apps don't take much space anyways, alot are under a 1mb
I just heard that the evo has 1gig of storage, which is awesome, but I hate sprint and want to convince myself that the Incredible is a better phone.
so if you have an sd, and download something, does it go to internal or sd?
and when you plug in your phone to your pc, does it show two seperate hard drives(sd and internal)?

When you download something, by default it saves to your SD. I haven't found a setting to change that. However, you can move the files to your internal storage after you've finished downloading using Astro File Manager. The downside to all this right now is that all third party apps can only read from the SD card. So if you have music and you want to play them using a third party app, then you'll have to store them on the SD.

Help me Understand Storage on my 101

I have just bought an Archos 101 16gb and downloaded just a few small apps.
I got a "Low on Space" notification today....but i cant understand why. Under /settings/staorage in shows under "Internal Storage" total space 14.44GB and available space 14.15GB.
I dont have an SD card yet
On system storage it says Avaialable space 25.25MB
Can someone help me understand whats going on here. Whats the differnce between Internal Storage and System storage and where do apps get stored by default....
Many thanks
Hey Pete,
System Storage is storage for apps that you can't put on internal storage or and SD card. Now, in order for you to only have 25mb free, you must have put a lot of data on there as well. I have a whole boatload of apps on my system and still have 162mb free on system storage (most are not on the SD). If you were to think of system storage in computer terms, it would be like RAM memory.
Internal storage is the storage where you put your data. Think of this storage as your "hard drive."
The next storage is, of course, the SD card. This is another place to store your data.
Finally, there is external storage. This is for things like flash drives and external hard drives.
By default apps load to the system storage area. You can go into your system preferences and move some to SD once you get an SD...but seriously, something else is at work for you to only have 25mb free right now.

Thank you that. Really helpful. So on my internal storage or "Hard Drive" I just have two apps, Aldiko and World Newspapers, totally 9mb.....
I had a look under /manage applications/downloaded and their is the AppsLib icon with 120MB next to it. That cant be right surely. This is just the Archos AppsLib app..... The MArket app is only 2.89 MB. If I look at the Application Infor for AppsLib under storage it says Total 120MB, Application 1MB and Data 119MB. What is this 119MB???
Also how do I set up storage preferences and what should they be.
Many thanks
OK, sotday the problem has changed. The missing 119MB of System storage has re-appeared. It seems that the AppsLib app which had shown 119MB of data cleared itself before I could uninstall it. No Idea why it had created 119MB of data in the first place.
So, can someone explain this for me. Not sure Im upto spead with this whole storage regime yet :-(
under /settings/storage "System Storage" was showing 119MB available.
I then downloaded Angry Birds (1.87 MB) and Angry Birds Seasons (1.99MB). Then checking /settings/storage "System Storage" now shows 104MB.
Next checking /settings/applications/manage applications and then clicking the "On Internal Strorage" tab I see the two Angry Birds apps there on Internal Strorage.
So my question is how come my "System Storage" has gone down by 15MB when the two apps only add up to less than 4MB. But, as manage apps shows them on the internal storage i.e. my 16gb storage, why did my system storage available space change at all. I'm very confused........
Update. I just checed AppsLib under /settings/applications/manage applications and its showing under application infor "Stroage" Total 41.46MB, Appkication 1.0MB and Data 40.46 MB. Whats going on here. What is the 40.46MB of data made up of. Its eating my System Storage.....Why?

have you installed Dolphin Browser HD or something similar?
In the options you can set cache to write into System Storage....
You should set the option to write cache into sdcard instead!!
Remember first to delete all caches...
I don't know if in the standard browser there is a similar option...
Honestly Pete, I have no idea what to tell you. I mean I'm not doing anything special and I have about 60 apps installed and still have 120mb of system storage, about 5gb of my 8gb internal storage and my 8gb SD card is maxed out with movies, music, documents, and some e-books I'm reading.
I have angry birds (not seasons...not feeling Christmas at the moment) and several other games as well.
I haven't done anything with the apps other than hit the "install" button. I know there are a lot I can move to SD, but since I don't need to I haven't.
The system memory does jump around though. As you use applications, load and unload, etc. Try using Archos's task manager to stop all apps, wait like 10 seconds (1 hippopotamus, 2 hippopotamus type 10 seconds...) , then check your storage. I bet that might be the issue. Hell, it almost has to be!

Thankyou. I think Im getting there. I noticed that in /settings/apps/manage apps the Archos AppsLib was showing 120MB. Weird I thought. So looking that the App Info for it said App 1MB data 119MB.
So I have uninstalled, re-booted and then sideloaded the latest build of AppsLib from Arcos. No App Info shows 1MB. Magically Angry Birds re-appeared too ...
This sounds like it has something to do with the problem and I now have to keep an eye on AppsLib to make sure it doesnt start eating System Storage Again.....
This seems very unusual to me. Maybe something is coded incorrectly by Archos in their latest release of AppsLib. Can others please tell me what amount of Data AppsLib has created on their devices? Thanks.
I havent got an external SD card yet, so I think that's going to be a must. Whats the biggest SD card that it can take? 32GB???
I should maybe also get Apps2SD. There seems a few versions out there. Who's the author of the one everyone here has loaded?
My appslib is 0.93mb of that, only .02mb is the data part.

the most recent one.
Im still having problems in thw whole storage and could do with some help.
The System Storage is listed as 299.44mb available when I look in App2sd. It shows I have 86.29mb available.
Using App 2 SD it shows the list of immovable apps on the System Storage. When I add up their indivdiual file sizes it comes to 65.919mb.
So where is the other 147.23mb gone?
Is System Storage where the Android OS sits? If so would that account for 147mb?
Many thanks Guys.

No, the OS is on a different partition, specifically a mounted squashfs. There will always be more data on the /data partition(System Storage) than is listed in the Applications menu. Keep in mind all the System Apps (ones you didn't install) will still need to store databases, settings, etc. on the /data partition, because the OS partition is read only.
147mb seems like alot, but my Archos has about the same amount of storage available(~86mb), and I have about the same amount of installed apps(~65mb), so I guess it's right.

No problem. I never really did the math, but it seems like an awful lot is used by non-download apps. I may have to do some crawling through the file system to see what's using so much.

If you discover anything please let me know. 147mb seems a lot to have gone missing
I contacted Archos support and they gave this answer:
"Dear Customer,
The information given by the 3thd party software is not correct, we do not support 3thrd part software.
Kind Regards,
Archos Technical Support"
So they are not helpful at all. Given the amount of money we pay for these devices you'd think they wouldnt just dissmiss my request for support and perhaps try and help even a little bit....
Do you both think that an operatingsystem can run without any memoryneeds?
Android is build for small memory devices but it still needs some memory or all that ui, threading, file and other services.
It is a bare Linux which consumes around 100MB depending on the features you have installed/switched on.

[Q] question about internal memory

hey guys so finally I was able to move most of my apps to the storage card as I had only less than 40 mb left on the internal storage,
I used the adb method that was posted on this forum, know that i have over 140 apps installed, I kept on purpose the IGO and 4 other apps on the internal memory which take about 50 mb by. But besides that I moved all the other apps to the storage card. The weird thing is that I am now left with about 115 mb out of a total 380 mb from the internal storage.
What is taking the remaining memory from the internal storage?
You'll still have some space taken up by the apps you left on for widgets etc, and the ones that went to the sd leave a few kb's behind.
The rest is all bloatware my friend, timescape, what's app and all the other sh*t they won't let you uninstall.
Also cache from most programs.

The adb method will only use the SD Card? or it is the same as moving the app to the SD CARD (Some part of the app will still be on the memory?)
if SD Card only please add the link on how to do it ..
Thanks a lot..

hey guys so finally I was able to move most of my apps to the storage card as I had only less than 40 mb left on the internal storage,
I used the adb method that was posted on this forum, know that i have over 140 apps installed, I kept on purpose the IGO and 4 other apps on the internal memory which take about 50 mb by. But besides that I moved all the other apps to the storage card. The weird thing is that I am now left with about 115 mb out of a total 380 mb from the internal storage.
What is taking the remaining memory from the internal storage?

The 380MB you're talking about is actually the available RAM size (from a total of 512MB). The storage space for installed apps resides in the NAND flash which has a total of 400MB free.
The RAM size will reduce as more background tasks are running, i.e. you kept opening apps and didn't close them properly.
The NAND flash storage space will reduce as you install more and more apps, but many apps are able to offload their data files to the SDcard.

Memory issues.

I have a little over 30mb left on a internal memory and i can't download or even run some of my apps any more, it keeps telling me not enough space or storage is running out evwn though i have about 53gb on my ext.sd. I have tried moving apss to ext. infact most of my apps show as copied to ext. but i still have this problem. Anybody has any idea what i can do ?

Go into settings/storage and look at the coloured breakdown of how the data is being taken up - are apps still the main culprit?

Yes, just apps. I don't really have a lot of media... On it.

Sounds like some of the apps you have moved to the microSD card have only partially moved their data. Perhaps if you go through each app which has a large amount of data and see exactly where its data is located you may get to the bottom of things. In the past i've noticed that some games that have a large amount of data only more a proportion of it to the MicroSD card (from memory i think NOVA might be like that).

I found Fifa 14 and NFS most wanted each had over 1gb on internal SD, I've deleted them but now the games don't work. At least I have some free space and I can always reinstall when I figure out what's happening. Thanks.
