OS (System Data) Taking up 28.8gb? [Solved] - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

For some reason, I seem to be running out of space on my 128gb version of the OP5.
As you can see from the screenshots, System data shows as 28.8gb and in the Storage + Memory it states other is 38gb . This can't be true as the largest folder is my DCIM folder which is 36.8gb which is accounted for in the "Images and Videos" section.
I've had a look through myself at various folders and just don't understand where this 28.8gb is. My friend who also has a OP5 has this value at around 6 gb which is understandable for the OS, but this can't be typical as owners of the 64gb model would be complaining about this for sure.
Any suggestions? I'd rather not convert to uploading all my images to google photos to save space.
[Solution]
Thanks for the input but I realised there was an update for the app I was using to calculate storage use in terms of support for Oreo. I was under the impression Spotify was taking up 10-15gb of usage, but in actual fact it was just over 30gb. This clears things up.

Use this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobile_infographics_tools.mydrive
Used it once to know what took space on an S6 Edge when S Voice took 9 GB for nothing. You should be able to see what's the curlprit.

[Q] New to Android, Picked up Aquos Crystal. Need some help.

Hey all -
I've been a long-time iOS user, and recently picked up my first Android device in about 4 years. I'm using (and absolutely loving) the Aquos Crystal 306SH on Boost's network, and have some probably basic questions for you guys.
The XDA device section for the Crystal shows the device has 8GB internal storage - mine only seems to have 4GB. Is this normal?
I have already eaten up every bit of the 4GB internal storage, and realized NOTHING has touched my 16GB SD card. I've found no settings to change storage locations. Can any of these items be stored on SD card by default?
Camera pictures & videos (I am using Google Camera now, but if the default camera app can auto save files to the SD then I'll gladly switch back to that)
Screenshots (I love this ClipNow tool, by the way. Wow)
Apps from Play Store or independently installed apps via .apk file
Downloads
Cache/Temp Files
Is it possible to change the color of the LED light on front of device (for calls, notifications, etc)?
Thanks for any help that can be given, I appreciate it. No longer can take photos or download apps

The 306sh has 8GB of internal storage, but the Os and bloatware leaves you with just 4gb of usable space.
Photos and videos can be toggled between internal and external storage in the camera settings. Pretty sure it goes to external by default as long as ones detected.
Apps must be saved onto internal storage, they can only be saved to external once root is obtained, which it is not for this phone. So for now just media on external sadly.
Cache and temp files are stored internally, I'd recommend an app cleaner to keep phone clear of gunk, clean master is a good one
File manager app (es file explorer there is no sub for non rooted phones) will allow you to easily transfer files between internal and external.
Only 3rd party apps will change the led color, it is possible but I can't remember what it's called, though I will recommend nova launcher as your launcher (makes it look a lot better and you can load custom icons for apps, though it does suck a little more battery.
Hope this helps, transition might not be smooth from an iPhone, but give it time you'll see why androids better.
Hi I just picked up the Aquos 306SH and was looking around for some mods and root tools when I saw your thread. I was on iOS for years until I found android phones and I'll never go back to apple.
The aquos is such a nice phone. Congrats on your purchase.
The led color application I have been using on NY droids for years and now on my aquos is Light Flow Lite and it works perfect. It takes about 15 minutes to get it set up just how you like since it has tons of options and settings but once its saved its exactly what you are looking for.
As far as storage, its definitely limited to the 4gbs until we obtain root access but it should be here soon so stick around XDA forums for updates!
Hope this info helped.
Cheers!

Thumbnails to Ext SD Card

If you have a lot of photos on your device, the gallery view thumbnails seem to use a tremendous amount of data; - nearly 2 gb on mine!! I have used utilities that allow me to clean these to retrieve the space, but the next time I view the gallery, the thumbnails just take up the space again; in addition, the performed task of cleaning them out just makes them load more slowly.
I'm hoping someone may have a trick (or hack) that can move the gallery thumbnails to the external SD card. Considering I only have 16gb of storage to begin with, and nearly 5 of it used up to store the basic OS, I'm not left with much space after installing my favorite apps. Furthermore, the performance on my device seems to be degrading as I approach maximum storage capacity on the internal storage.
I'm aware of programs that allow me to move program data to the external SD, but I have found that it's not uncommon that many programs have a tendency to glitch when using these utilities. I'm really more interested in staying focused on my primary intent of moving JUST the gallery thumbnails to the external SD card in hopes of saving space on my primary storage.
If it matters, my device is a rooted Verizon S5 running KitKat 4.4.4.

You can use the program FolderMount to make a folder on the Internal SD point to a folder on the External SD.
You may need the premium version to mount a folder that isn't in a data or obb folder.

Rapidly Losing Storage Space on my 32GB

Hey Guys
No clue WTF is up with my Note 4 but I all of a sudden got a heads up this afternoon that I was running out of local storage space and needed to clear up some files to make room.
I store everything (app files and all photos etc) on my 64GB card and, last I checked, I had about 12GB of space left on the phone with 7.5GB of OS usage.
According to my phone I was down to 400MB and my phone was feeling a little warm while just sitting on the table.
So I connected it to my PC, removed an old camera folder and a few other things and got it up to 3.56GB but still way too low and all visible folders to me are low in size so something is going on within the system files hidden away to be chewing up 21.6GB of space.
Within 3-4 mins of freeing up the 3.56GB of space, it dropped to 2.4GB!?
So I checked the storage on the phone itself and it was showing only 1.8GB available.
Within 5 mins it was down to 889MB and there is has remained.
I cannot figure out WHAT is writing so much to my phone that is is chewing up 10+ GB?
Anyone else ever experience this?
Could it be Google Photos but if so, why would it write anything to my phone vs uploading it to the cloud?
I installed 2 apps 2 days ago, both for my Mi Band 1S and they appear to be using next to nothing storage and battery wise so I am not sure what is up but it is driving me nuts.
Appreciate any input, advice, or ideas!
Cheers :good:
Use the "SD card Analyst" feature in ES file Explorer or similar feature in other file managers to see size of each folders in SD and External SD.
Mmm but the issue isn't with my SD card but rather the local main storage.
Or are you suggesting the SD card has something to do with that?
Cheers
Was thinking about a system update, but 10GB is a lot.
Strange stuff, hope you get it solved, kinda curious what it could be.
Perhaps it would help if you posted model and firmware version.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Yeah I wondered the same thing but I do not think Rogers has the 6.0 update rolling out yet...I should get it by the time 7.0 is out :|
Well my phone, just now, plummeted down to 15mb of onboard storage left and all I did was take a couple of photos (I choose to save all photos to my 64GB SD card).
I am wondering if Google Photos is caching a ton of info in a hidden folder somewhere after the latest update?
It told me to delete photos since they are uploaded to t Google Photos but those files are on my SD card and yet it is telling me I am running out of space.
Figured it out!
Even though my photos are tossed to the SD card after taking them, Google Photos decides to store ALL your photos in a hidden folder within the system files WTF Google.
I had 18GB of photos so I cleared the Google Photos cache and all good.
Cannot wait for 6.0 and using expandable memory as internal storage.
Hello, i have got the same behavior. After checking which app is the bigger one, I found that google photo took about 14Gb!
I have deinstalled this app and reinstall it. It is fine just for 2days and I have just double check this morning that I have lost again more than 4Gb in one night....
It seems that this memory leaks happens only when connected to wifi.
Ah ha... So it must be after the last update. I re-enabled mine and sure enough it started backing up the photos off the Web to my phone even those the are already on my SD card! I left a 1 star review on the play store... They generally are pretty quick to patch
Hope the patch will come soon...
I sent them a feedback, wait now their answer.

Galaxy S4's hidden folder?

Okay so to start off, I was digging around in my phone a couple days ago (Keep in mind this is a white 16 gig S4 on CM13). And i stumbled across a weird folder, it was a faded one (I did have hidden files on). So I tapped and opened the folder, and for some reason, It was loading so slow (s4s pretty fast storage wise for me), but that slowed it down.
And as ES File Explorer was showing me, there was 44,000+ files. In that very folder alone. So I wondered what it could be (was a ton of old stuff I knew I had deleted).
But the strange thing about it is, once I selected each and every photo, the total amount of storage space used made no sense, it was using 24.6gigs of storage.
My phone remember is only a 16 gig model. But the folder took up 24.6 gigs, and I know it wasn't the sd card, since that was practically full of other things and wasn't in the phone at the time. After moving or trying to move it all to windows, I wound up with about 7000+ photos and 2 12+ gig files that can't be opened nor used at all. it gave me about a gig and a half back in storage as well. (phone has about 6-7+ used with 1.94 or 2.40 left after clearing cache and what not.)
What I'd like to know, has anyone had this 'issue' before as well or do they know what it could be?
I found it in DCIM>Thumbnails. Any information would be very helpful. It still bogs me as to why that happens.
it's function is for gallery apps to show thumbnails. and for the size, maybe the files where a file representing your data partition? very strange.

Hmmm, could be but my data partition is no where near that size. It could of been compressed files, but I'm pretty sure 24.6 gigs would equal a decent 10 or more gig file, and to add to that, after deleting that first one. Two more popped up, each at 25 and 26 gigs respectively, I have no clue what the issue is. But it's only present on cm 13. Cm14 and 14.1 do not give me that issue.

Excessive Storage Usage by the device - Shady practices ?

Hey Guys,
Did anyone else notice excessive usage of storage space. To me it almost feels like there is something shady going on here.
I have not even installed all my apps on the new one there is like 10 GB lesser space consumed on the Note 20 Ultra for apps rest of the storage space used is pretty identical on both.
There is no way that Android 10 OS is 30 GB bigger than Android 9. It seems the manufacturers are doing whatsoever they can to fill up your storage regardless of what size storage you buy.
Any thoughts ?
PS- See My note 8 (Android 9) vs Note 20 Ultra (Android 10) space usage comparison screenshot attached here.

I'm sure there is a similar thread regarding Note 10
no bother as far as I'm concerned

I am not worried about out of box space i am bothered if they fill up storage with garbage just so it gets filled up with information not readable by file explorers esp when one is not rooted.
This is typical and maybe even a little less than my 10+
Get a data drive ie SD card as it helps manage your data files better and can make reloads a lot easier.
Fast 512 gb cards can be had for around $75, get a name brand one like Lexar, Samsung, etc.
I use the internal memory for apps and as a buffer zone before storing files to the SD card.
Downloads go to internal memory first. Occasionally a infected jpeg or whatnot gets downloaded. Hopefully the malware gets tagged by you there. If it makes it to another drive it's more likely to corrupt those files too.
Not foolproof but it's saved me more than once with damage being limited to only the downloads folder.
Doing it this way makes it easier to spot issues on the internal memory as it's less cluttered.
You can go into storage and see what extra is being used...I just checked mine and it was only 4.2 gbs for apps...Also could there be dead space or wasted space if you did a transfer rather than a fresh install? As user raul6 said it's always brought up and usually not a real issue...I always start with a clean install to ensure I don't carry over anything I don't need...

On the 10+ 512 gb variant you have 466.5 gb of available space before -anything- is loaded.
Ater a hard reset the junk is gone. Reload as needed.
If you don't install a lot of apps and especially uninstall the load stays cleaner longer.
SD Maid can manage some of the hidden trash files without root.

Thanks for suggestion I use a 200GB SD card for now sufficient for me. I have malwarebytes and lookout. Malwarebytes is really good at actively scanning the downloads. Thank you.

Got it. I used Samsung smartswitch but this is the last time I will use such an app coz no point all it did was brought over msgs and photos and Samsung settings. I could have done msgs manually, phitos are already on Google photos and Samsung Settings would have synced the moment I logged into Samsung account so you are right it makes more sense to start fresh as apps needs installing manually anyway.

Thanks for this add CCleaner pro or Avast Clean up pro to SD Maid. CCleaner is owned by Avast now so those two are basically the same apps with different names. I do use SD Maid pro.
Ccleaner has made a big mess on me before... I don't use it with Android.
SD Maid definitely has the potential too but has been well behaved. Running multiple cleaners may cause little nightmares...
Don't count on any virus scanners to catch everything because they won't... especially with the jpegs.
Best to keep a close eye on the Download folder and be ready to delete it if things go really south. The last one damaged some files completely and on others just changed the extension.
The ones I couldn't repair or wasn't 100% with I deleted. It wasn't able the breach folders in that folder thankfully.
Still it cost me close to 100 images and files.
Whatever it was, it died with the jpeg... however if I hadn't spotted it early and kept it relatively isolated, it could have destroyed a lot of files. A hard reload wasn't needed.
maybe samsung reserving the space for future activation of seamless update (a/b partition)? my two cents though

It reserves 10 gb for the OS of which around 9 gb are used leaving about 1 gb of reserved space for future updates... I think.
