Can't Connect to any PCs - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I've had my S4 for just about two years now, and have been looking into getting a new phone. I wanted to update it to 5.0 and back it up. My charging port went (yet again) so I bought a replacement and now it will charge like new. However, I cannot get it to connect to any PC and it won't show up in devices.
Things I have tried to remedy this:
-Unistalled/reinstalled newest drivers
-Uninstalled/reinstalled newest Kies
-Four different cables (all of which claim to be OEM, one IS OEM)
-Multiple USB ports on two PCs (Win 7, Win 10) and an iMac
-Checked all connections of new charging port
-Changed USB settings to MTP, MTP+ADB
As I said, I have run out of options. I can only get this thing to charge when connected to a computer, no data. It won't even show up under Device Manager or as a USB storage device.

Put ur phone in download mode then try connecting if ur PC didn't find ur phone it maybe the problem with ur phones USB port

that didn't work either. The charging port is brand new, and also a brand new cable. Any other suggestions?

Try flashing your device with the default rom

how would I do that? I can't connect it to PC to back it up or download a ROM

ive tried debugging mode no different , i can even select - deselect usb debugging whist the usb cable is connected .
the usb drivers from your sig are for windows x64
my wifes galaxy s is detected by the computer fine ,same usb cable and port

If that doesnt work, im afraid there is a hardware problem

DID you try to put a RIGHT cable into a WRONG hole???
You are not alone, I have exactly the same problem, but wrote it off as a hardware problem, because it started after my son (9 months and teething) gnawed on the phone for some time...

ok tried different roms etc no luck must be hardware related going to open the phone tomorrow and check the usb socket . only really worried incase i need to use odin to recover after a bad flash , or incase the usb decides to die completely and i cant charge the phone

Hey Jona29 i had the same problem some time ago i solved it by changing usb port (preferably one direct to motherboard) while pc is off then start it while in download mode and flash with odin.
Good luck bud, i know how frustrating it is
UPDATE ! fixed the phone ,yes it was hardware not software at fault . dissasembled the phone and removed the board with the usb connector on .
heated the board around the connector with a pyro pen to reflow the solder
let it cooled and then reassembled the phone .
powered up phone and connected usb lead ,computer recognised phone and phone recognised usb connection
probably took me 30 mins to complete the task.
better than say a 4 week wait from samsung

Slick. I have taken my phone apart for USB problems as well, but I would be scared to try to reflow something on the PBC. The connections are so small.
I have had the USB issue as well but it always seemed to be the cooked ROM iI was using.
Ian
I had the same problem, after using DXJPA ... every time i connected the phone (even in boot mode) i received "USB device not recognized" ... I don't know what worked in the end, but i tried a lot of things: I bought a new cable (same problem), I used another computer (same problem), I tried on W7 x64, W7 x32, XP SP3 (same problem), uninstalled and reinstalled Kies, I uninstalled and reinstalled an older version of Kies, changed the phone form a computer to another, played a lot with USB ports ...
After 2-3 hours of pain, Odin saw the phone ... flash it to JPY and no USB problem anymore ...
Maybe this will help someone

Problem with usb connection

Hi guys ,my problem is that when I connect my phone via USB cable at first there is no problem, data transfer , windows mobile device center, everything is OK. But when I want to flash the phone pressing vol-down + switch on/off keys the phone is not connected to the PC. And I can't flash it. Also the phone wouldn't like charge trough the charger ,only with the data cable. Is it possible to have any liaison between the problem with charging with charger and no-connection when try to flash.
Also my phone was to the service for touch-screen change ,is it possible the technician make any mistake ? Cause I think that if he make a mistake with the connector nothing gonna work ,but it works at different situations.
Regards!
check to be sure USB SYNC driver installed correctly and also try a different usb cable.
I'll try but there is no logic ,the cable works when charge the phone, works when is connected to device manager but doesn't works when flashing ?
exactly. the device requires different drivers.
1. there is internet sharing and disk mode (which works with all computers, because those drivers are in the operating system)
2. then there is one driver for syncing
3. and another one for flashing
it is not the same kind of data transfer, which is why you need a different driver. but the thread "[tut] updating htc sync drivers" should cover all your windows vista/7 driver needs and a tutorial on how to install them, which in case of a x64 system can be fairly complicated.
if you already have hspl installed (which you can determine by entering bootloader mode and looking whether it says 1.56Olinex), you can also flash using the sd car method. put a rom of your choice on the sd card, name in BLACIMG.nbh and enter bootloader mode, you will be presented with options to flash the rom.
Ok, but in instructions at the thread you give me is written that I have to start making the steps after I see "USB" on the flashing screen. But I don't see it, it's only "Serial". And now what ? I know that if on the screen i written "USB" the phone and the computer are connected and there is no problem to flash ,but now what ?
well, before you start, put your device into bootloader mode. it will show "serial", then connect it to the pc. test your connection using mtty 1.42 (you'll find several download options here in the forum).
the connection settings for mtty are USB 115200-8-1-No-NONE-None
if it works, connect and press enter, the command shell should show USB> then.
if usb is not present in the connection settings, your connection is not established yet. proceed with the tutorial then. during the entire procedure, the device should remain connected to the pc in bootloader mode, so you install the driver for the right device state.
Hello,
I've problem something like this. Few months ago when i was conecting my phone to computer was everything OK, activesync, disk drive, but now nothing, just charging the phone. I've tryed everything in USB to pc zone, but nothing. When i'm going to bootloader it's writen serial. What can be here?
since you already tried all the different connection methods and even bootloader mode does not connect, there are hardly any options left, where the trouble could be:
- the usb port on the blackstone
- the usb port on the pc
- the cable
you can try another port on the pc (or even better, another pc altogether) and/or another cable, like from a digital camera, an external hdd... (many devices have mini usb cables, you should be able to use either one of those)

Do you have the usb drivers installed correctly? Or try another usb port/ cable.
IVE put the USB driver in the c drive along sid the KIES and still it says its (USB) not recognised. Is there something else i could use instead ,i didnt like kies anyway.I tried to get airdroid to work (ive had that for 3 years) but it doesnt handle software (my phone) 4.4.2 it only does 4.3. It says FORBIDEN.FAILED TO SEND MESSAGE on my PC.
Most likely you are using an outdated version of Kies. There are multiple versions of Kies, ensure that you install the latest version of Kies. Then open Kies and have it detect your phone. That is by far the easiest way to install the proper driver for your S5 model. After the driver is in place you can close Kies and never use it again. Or uninstall it if you wish.
Do not use an USB hub, connect directly to your phone. If you have ongoing issues, use a different USB cable and port. Ensure that you are using a data cable, not a charging (only) cable that has the data lines shorted. If your PC has USB driver issues in general, then you'll need to resolve those issues first or use a different PC.

KIES V3. The trouble is i cant find the USB i now it should be there in the notif panel but it is not, ive got developer options & usb debugging ticked but thats all, have i got to do anything else (hair pulling time) i dont think so?
1) Should i plug it in the mains or usb on the pc
2) Im using the cable that came with the S5 is that good enough.
3) The S5 sits on a cradle shall i take it of.
4) How do i tell data cable, not a charging (only) cable that has the data lines shorted
5) Ive tried 4 different USB software and it gives the message DEVICE DRIVER SOFTWARE WAS NOT SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED every time
6) Ive done a reboot every time the drivers are put it

If you use Windows 8(.1) you have to disable driver signature verification to get the usb drivers installed. Here is a tut. https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorial...abling-signed-driver-enforcement-on-windows-8.

You are juggling too many unnecessary variables. Try to simply that and don't skip checking any of the points.
I have no idea what you mean by plug it in the mains? And at least until you solve this you should not be using a cradle, hub or anything else. As I suggested earlier, connect the phone directly to your computer USB hub. And if you have ongoing problems, try a different cable, USB port or even PC.
Making an assumption that the cable that came with the phone is good enough is counter productive. It's not impossible that it may be damaged or have some problem. Borrow or buy another cable, to eliminate one more possible cause of your issue.
Retrace and double check each step. As soon as you make an assumption that it's not worth checking x step because it couldn't possibly be the cause, you are skipping a possible solution. Make sure that you are using the latest Odin, make sure that you installed it from windows administrator mode, connect directly to the PC's USB port, different cable, etc. If you are methodical, you'll resolve the problem.
Good luck

Have you activated developer oprions and usb debug?

If you haven't given AirDroid permissions to send SMS directly, "FORBIDEN.FAILED TO SEND MESSAGE" might appear. Change the permissions in phone's settings for a try

[Q] Nexus 4 gone stealth

... and is no longer recognized when connected to a computer via USB, meaning I can't return to stock to get ready for the Lollipop OTA.
Got a rooted Nexus 4 running the latest PA beta.
What happens when connecting to PC:
- On two different Windows machines: systray popup saying "USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned etc.". In device manager it says "Unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)"
- On elementary OS, based on Ubuntu 12.04: nothing, besides charging.
No USB debugging connection notification on the Nexus 4 either when plugging in.
What I've tried (USB debugging enabled, all relevant drivers installed):
- Settings > Storage > USB computer connection > check Camera PTP (used to be required in order to get an RSA key prompt when connecting to a computer, now it does nothing)
- Flashing latest stable CM to see if PA was to blame. Made no difference.
- Uninstalling device through device manager in Windows and reconnecting. No effect. Driver update doesn't work either, finds nothing.
- Using Wugfresh's Nexus toolkit to see if that worked, but that obviously doesn't work either when the device isn't recognized, same with the Universal Nexus Linux Toolkit on Linux.
- Scouring the net for solutions and coming up with nothing
I have flashed factory images before on this phone without problems. Should I consider it a hardware failure by now, or is this a known issue with a fix?
Try a new wire, different usb port on computer, finally look into cleaning your charging port on the phone/replacing it.

Tried three different cables, every port on two laptops, no joy - my girlfriend's phone connects normally.
Wouldn't replace the charging port, then I'd just get a new phone since it's a 2 years old Nexus 4. If only there was a way to flash the factory image using only TWRP.

Flash this in twrp http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47476426
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks jd1639, that seemed to be exactly what I was looking for -
- but then I had an extremely blonde moment and formatted everything in TWRP, wiping the ROM I was gonna flash in the process, on a device where USB file transfer doesn't work anymore
My phone is now a paper weight.
Have you tried the file manager in twrp yet? I've found it connects when nothing else will...

PC won't detect S7, all conventional fixes exhausted!!

I've got 5 S7s on my desk, all Canadian variant, all from the same manufacturer all the same model. - SM-G930W8
All are recognised by my PC but one and I can't work out why not!
Plugging the phone into the PC makes no noise from the PC but the phone seems to detect a regular charger not a PC.
I have plugged it in using different cables including the one in its box and the ones used on other devices that were recognised and only this phone doesn't work with any of them.
I have plugged in, unplugged and rebooted many times.
I have set the USB configuration to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)/Transferring files.
USB Debugging is ON and OEM unlocking is ON.
I have tried booting into stock recovery and wiping cache AND factory resetting.
When phone is turned on "adb devices" returns nothing.
I have installed Samsung Kies and Samsung Smart Switch to reinstall the drivers.
NOTHING IS WORKING!
All threads I find tell me to do the things I have listed above and have people saying these have worked but all of them I had already tried and double tried and nothing is working.
The cables are correct and working with other S7s of the same model.
All the correct drivers are installed and have been uninstalled and reinstalled.
All the correct setting are selected and OEM unlock and USB debugging enabled.
Phone was fresh out the box as were the other four and all cables.
Samsungs apps installed on PC to ensure best drivers installed.
Would really appreciate some guidance or consolation that its not something stupid I'm doing! I work with these phones everyday and this has never happened! Just banging my head against a brick wall trying to resolve it
maybe faulty usb port, my nephew had S6 with the same issue, service replaced usb port and it started

try download mode and see if odin see your phone.
try to move the cable a lil bit and see if sth appears for a second.

Thanks but unfortunately Odin doesn't recognise in download mode.
Could it be a USB port problem if I used the same port for the other 4 devices and have no issue?
I'm considering sending the phone back to manufacturer to be honest I think it may just be a faulty device or something!
I bet its microusb port fault
Had a similar issue on Windows 10 , if that's what your running let the phone be connected, uninstall the driver from device manager, and then install driver select have disk and select the basic mtp , if this doesn't help connect to Microsoft support and they'll guide you through it , worked for me , my phone used to detect on other laptops but mine , also I could connect other phones on mine but not my phone, hope this helps
same issue here
