[Q] Nexus 4 - Android 5.1 update installation error - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all ,
I got a notification that the 5.1 update is available in my phone. I pressed download and afterwards install, but when the phone reboots to install the update, after 3-4 seconds it just says "Error!" and nothing more.
Has anybody experienced this?
My phone has stock 5.0.1 and it's rooted.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

You can't be rooted. You have to be 100% stock system, kernel, and recovery for the ota to work.

Does that include the bootloader? must it be locked?

Nexus Root Toolkit solved my problem.

Download it from here. Install the driver using the instruction in the same link. Then connect your phone in debugging mode. Consider the "backup" as well. you can backup your phone in the program(nexus root toolkit). Though, during the procedure, the program asked me if I want to preserve my data, and I said yes and there was no need to restore the backup (however it says that it might not work sometimes , so you should consider the backup).
select "Flash Stock+Unroot" in the program and select the andoird 5.1 from the list.
After it's done, let the phone boot up and then select root in the program. It will restart your phone couple of times and finally you'll have Android 5.1 rooted.

In my case, this did the trick: aaronhastings.me/updating-to-android-5-1-0-on-rooted-nexus-5
I hope it will help you, too.

Nexus 7 not updating

Hello guys. I guess you can say I am a noob at this.
My Nexus 7 is rooted, and ever since the new update came out, my nexus does not want to update. I tried to update in manually with a file via computer, but it does not update. It is currently running 4.1.1. I really want to update my nexus 7. Does anyone know any other way? I also tried using Nexus Toolkit, but it says that my USB debugging is not turned on, but it is turned on.
Can someone please help me?
Greatly appreciate it. Thank You

I tried unrooting it using the Nexus 7 toolkit program, but it says debugging is not turned on.
I tried to also update it using the updated version. I downloaded the version and put it on the nexus via computer. Then I went into custom recovery and tried to flash it, but it either said no file found or it tried to installed it but failed.

There are no apps blocked, but on SuperSU there is an option that says "Full unroot." should I try doing that?
Just download the image from Google and flash the System and boot files. Shouldn't take more than a couple minutes.
which toolkit? I've used wug's and its worked really well. I had to do the pdanet drivers though.

What can I do now?

How to update to 4.3 on rooted N4?

My nexus 4 is rooted and is on 4.2.2 with rom paranoid android 3.5. Im not interested in root anymore. I want to update to 4.3. but everytime i try to update it ...it says 'verification failed'. Is there a way to update to 4.3 without going back to 4.2 unrooted nexus 4. I m passsed my modding days and dont have time to unroot it so looking an easy way to update to 4.3
thanks.
First thing this is not Q&A section. To update to 4.3 you have to be on stock rom since you on a custom ROM you'll have to flash the stock 4.3 images with fast boot
From my BLACKED OUT N4
So I tried THIS method... but in command prompt screen, it doesnt go beyond the second line of command prompt.
I also tried THIS method and i got stuck on installing the drivers.
I guess I need a really easy simple way of unrooting my phone.
I use "Nexus 4 toolkit" it works great you can do anything easy.. Just make sure it sees your phone while in android and fastboot (install the drivers with this toolkit)

Is this Nexs 4 tool kit you're talking about? Will it unroot my phone? coz i dont see it in the feature list.
Yes that's it. You can download stock 4.3 and flash it with this or just unroot...

Don't use the toolkit, learn to do it yourself. Which drivers are you using? I use the ones from the SDK, they work fine even on Windows 8.
Once they are installed, it's just a case of following efrant's guide after downloading the 4.3 factory image from Google. It's really not that hard if you're willing to take 10-20 minutes to read up on it all. Once you have read up on it, you'll never need to use a toolkit
He asked for something easy.. Toolkit is fine and you can do a manual input...same thing

Sorry if you felt my English improper.. I have got used to texting..
So to start, I had rooted through framaroot and unlocked the bootloader and installed twrp through goo manager.
Unrooted my phone for 4.3 update by restoring the kernel and recovery(was on stock rom). While restoring the recovery I got an error message with android and exclamation mark so I rebooted and all was fine..
So today I got the update and downloaded it and it said to Restart and Install I did that and while installing it aborted and gave a android with red triangle and error written under it..
Hope you don't find this English as gangster speech.

Much better!
OK, the android with the red triangle is the stock recovery so all that seems fine. Did you modify and of the system files at all on the phone since rooting it?

No not at all.. I had only flashed kernels n radios thats it.
Thanks for your reply.. Can you please tell me can I flssh Pa based on 4.3 when it comes directly on rooting 4.2.2?
Flashing the kernel will affect the OTA as you have to have the stock kernel as well. I'd imagine the radio also has to be the 4.2.2 one as well

[Q] [HELP] Download again Android 4.3 via OTA

Hi to everyone,
I downloaded Android 4.3 via OTA but I didn't install it immediately. After some days by mistake I cleared all the data in the Cache, so I couldn't install it because I lost the data.
I tried to clear the data in google service framework process after I checked for the updates but my phone says the system is up to date even if I have the 4.2 installed on it. How can I download the 4.3 update again in the simplest way?

Keep trying the same trick as it won't work in the first attempt.. I had tried it for almost 15 times a day..
Simple way is why dont you try any 4.3 custom rom if you are rooted??
Rooting your phone won't harm you or your phone... all upto you. :good:

Go to settings-->Apps-->All Apps-->Google framework services.
Delete cache and data etc.
Go to dialer and 'call' this: *#*#2432546#*#*
Go to System update and your update should be there.

I havent rooted my phone because I don't want to lose warranty. I rooted my old HTC desire and partitioned the SD card as it had no space for apps. So I'll keep trying. Do you think Google will let me download again the ota? Or I'll be disabled for downloading the 4.3 seen that I already downloaded it?. Thank for your reply

Try it a couple of times. And make sure to clear cache AND data.
Maybe also Force close it.
You can also try the following:
Do exact to same but instead of typing *#*#blabla#*#* after deleting cache etc you gonna restart. After reboot go to system update it should be there.
I was lucky it worked for the first time but I remember members here tried it 7+ times and then got result.

Thanks I'll try to get the code for the URL. I have two questions:
1) Once I get the URL and I direct download the ota how can I install the updates? I mean (no root, no custom rom) just upgrade "legally"
2) Does the OTA delete the apps I have installed or any data like photos or music on my smartphone?
Thanks :good:

hahahahaha Legally? you act like rooting is going to get you thrown in jail.... LOL, well I have never done it "legally" as you say but I would assume there are directions in the link or on the web. Probably download zip to phone and there should be an update.zip option to use in stock recovery. OTA wont delete anything you have on your phone but ya know if you rooted it you would be able to nandroid all of that.
The pros of rooting out way any con you could possibly have but hey its your phone so enjoy. Also 4.3 stock is not exactly a major upgrade that you will notice but hopefully it fixes something you may have had an issue with on 4.2.2

[Q] I think I softbricked my Nexus 7 :'(

I rooted my Nexus 7 a few months back and I was still using stock android 4.2.2. Today I decided I wanted to start using 4.3 but when I tried to update it gave me an error. I then proceeded to do a factory reset on my tablet hoping that would help, it didn't now it wouldn't let me click the buttons or connect to any Google services. I then downloaded the Nexus Root Toolkit and clicked the Flash Stock + Unroot button. I proceeded with all the steps but when my computer said it was finished my tablet didn't restart, I tried to turn it on but it keeps saying "Booting Failed" I need help please!!! Thank you for any help.

But the second problem is that my Bootloader is locked and i dont have rooted my Phone, so is there any chance to safe the phone with any method?
Greets,

If you can define the procedure you followed for updating to Android 5.0.1, then I can think of something.

Well, your phone isn't dead but you might have to wipe your phone. I'd start with doing a factory reset in the stock recovery. That will wipe your device
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
Go to stock recovery and you can trying wiping /cache first, and then reboot. If that does not work, go back and do a full wipe.
Did you use the toolkit? If so, this happens everytime for some reason. Your phone is not broken. Just give it some time after rebooting and should bring you to the setup menus.
