So after almost 10 months of service, my X1 is being sent to a repair center today.
I tolerated the cracks throughout the case (didn't bother me) and my front facing camera was jacked. However, today whenever I slid the keyboard out the screen wouldn't change orientation and would freeze. I did a soft and hard reset -> samething happened so I got my RMA number and will be shipping the phone out today.
What are peoples experiences with the Bloomington, Indiana repair shop?
SE says that a repair normally takes 7 to 10 business days to have your phone fixed, but my phone was in repair for over 22 business days so I didn't have my phone for a month. Depending on your issue you might get it back quicker. My problem had to do with a messed up flex ribbon causing the screen to turn black when in landscape mode. From reading other posts from people who had cracks, they got their phones replaced and they got theirs within that 7 to 10 business days time frame. Hopefully you don't have to wait as long as I did.
Good Luck!
My phone repaired and shipped back out in about 3-4 days. Their estimation is always 7-10 though.
Was pretty fast and painless.
Just got my phone back, that was quick! I was kinda worried after all the horror stories, but they fixed all my issues (bad front facing camera, cracks, no screen rotation). Even the wobbly optical pad.
I think what they did is they took the front faceplate (metal) from my old phone and put it on a new phone. Phone feels a lot more solid. Got a brand new screen (my old screen had a light scratch on it).
All in all, I give SE Support an A+.
i might send my x1 to india next time then for repair. the uk is useless

This was in America btw.
As soon as I got my Z1 I started hanging out in the Z1 section on XDA and I have noticed quite a few people with problems like the flaps falling off or the phone being water damaged. My friend got his Z1 about 2 weeks ago, he's not really a tech guy and only uses his phone for Facebook texts and calling but yesterday his phone just shut off for no reason on 82% and couldn't for the life of him start the phone up so he called me and I just randomly suggested for him to hold the power and volume up button for 10 seconds whilst having the phone connected to a charger and voila it worked.
What I am trying to say is that it feels like the Z1 has quite a few flaws, software as well as the hardware.
Don't get me wrong, I still love my Z1 and wouldn't trade for any other phone right now.
And there are people whose flaps don't fall off and go swimming with their Z1 without any probs or so they claim.
Anecdotes. They work both ways

I agree. I've had my z1 for 3 months now and not a single issue. I haven't tried swimming with it yet but I'll leave the water test to occur more naturally

Hey man,
I own my z1 for 3 months already and I've tried everything on my Z1 (including swimming). I don't find any problems on my phone, so perhaps he should ask Sony to check out his phone as he is still in the warranty I assume?
Cheers! Z1 the best.
I'm not sure what some of those people are doing to their Z1. My Z1 has been great to me so far. Also noticed a few people complaints the battery life sucks which I think is a false accusation because I use my Z1 to listen to music at work 6-8 hours a day together with constant texting, facebooking, some youtube/netflix activities, some gaming here and there and I would still have 40% or more battery life at the end of the day without stamina mode activated. With stamina mode activated from full charge I was able to use the phone with similar activities for 2 days and 9 hours before having to charge it at 1% left. The only complaint I have about this phone is the lack of "manual" controls in Manual mode for the Camera app. I wish it would let me manually adjust my shutter speed, and aperture. Though I have a DSLR for real photography it just great to have those adjustment on hand for when I don't have my DSLR with me. After all the Z1 posses great potential. Also it gets pretty warm sometime while using google chrome. Hopefully in kitkat update Sony will greatly improve the camera app or at least will get to it in the near future.
I haven't try the waterproof capability yet as I don't get warranty since I bought the phone 2nd hand. I'll let that happens more naturally like the other members

What I thought about the flaps when I got it: There sturdy and there not in danger of falling off.
Now: After roughly 1 month of pulling the flaps out. They have gotten considerably weaker and I do believe it would fall off eventually so I bought a dock. Much better experience for my phone.
Used the flaps once and that was to insert sim and sd I haved never charged through micro usb I use the magnetic dock charger and it seems to charge faster than usb (done a test with my mate and his z1 both from 1%) overall im happy with device mind you this is my second on as tye microphone stopped working on first one

By the way I also don't have a case for this phone, I did get an aluminium bumper case for it, that was great but I got fed up of the added bulk and when holding it the edges dug into my fingers and caused mild discomfort so I reverted to the naked Xperia Z1. So far so good. No case for a month now. It has one or two very mild scratches on the back but there to very very hard to see. But I still have the screen protector on the back I'm not worried. In comparison I dropped my Galaxy S3 a few days after I got it and the sides scratched, the silver paint came off. I've never dropped this because it's not nearly as slippery as my i9300.

Right, so you need to start using magnetic charging.

I am on rooted LB iHackers ROM, I don't have any problems. My friend if you could read my first post is a basic user IE he doesn't have any advanced experience in rooting and such and only uses his phone to text, surf and call. His phone got this problem and I have also seen reports of other people getting this problem on other forums.
Hmm...I'm reading this and can't believe.
My Z1 is perfect, I have XU, XS and I'll buy Z2 when Sony release it - never had any problems with Xperia's.
I just love that devices...
Screen is perfect, touchscreen problems?-never had something like that...
Battery is awesome (2-2,5 days without any problems)
Flaps are great, although, I'm using magnetic charger, my device is often connected to PC (for developing/theming) and they are still great.
I'm sorry to hear that someone has problems with this device but I must repeat - I have/had many Xperia devices and all of them is/was perfect

Keep in mind that I only said that my Z1 has the flaps problem, they are getting weaker and weaker everytime.
Also one question to all of you saying that you're using magnetic charger, so just because we have a magnetic charger does it mean that it's ok for Sony to make the flaps the way they are right now? The flaps are there so you can open and close them, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't use them just because there is a magnetic charger.
I've had my phone since October and opened and closed the USB flap at least once a day. It's still fine.
FOr me i think it's still depend on your luck
no problems here either, this is one of the best made phones I've ever seen. Definitely no more issues with this phone than any other.
On my Xperia Z2 components of the phone can be seen through back glass, is this a factory defect or is it normal.? Plus after 4.4.4 update stamina mode stopped working on my phone, after screen goes off I still receive messages and notifications but after 10-15 mins stamina mode starts working. Before update stamina mode used to work right when screen used to go off. Please help. Here is link to image of back side of phone
I don't have those kind of problems.Stamina mode working fine and the glass hides everything on its back.Give the phone to Sony's centre.
thats kinda weird my z2 cannot be seen through back glass. haha
honestly, that's actually kind of cool
It kinda seems like your back of phone somehow went through immense heat. Did you let the phone get exposed to heat? Or is it normal usage?
I used to get that too after I use hair drier to heat my phone after some moisture get into my phone innards. Putting heat on highest switch hoping that the moiseture would evaporate... It wasn't work though.. And I get the effect just like your picture
Try to reset your phone to by flashing original firmware to solve the stamina mode problem. Hardware wise, I don't think it's going to have any effect but visual looks. If you don't like it you can sent to Sony for repair (and also ask them to install firmware for you) but it might cost you a bit.
Regards

This happend to mine to, but after I had a little accident. I accidently dropped it on a small patch of water and one of ports popped open. You can imagine my desperation when it happened. I grabbed it as fast as I could, but I could see that a little bit of water poured in (the SIM card was a little bit wet), but it didn't affect the device, everything is working propperly.
My guess is a very small quantity of moisture got is and "lit up" the components. I tried leaving it in a small bowl with raw rice, those silicon gel balls and even vacuuming through one of the ports, but it is still there.
There is no sign of internal moisture on either camera, light/proximity sensors or the flash LED, though.

I can see the components on the back if my phone.. Phone is working perfectly, remember, its only glass with a film on
I recently smashed the screen on my Z2 whilst on holiday and I got a replacement from my insurance. I was using the replacement in water, everything seemed ok but a few hours later I noticed the camera lens was full of water.
When I looked at the device closer I noticed I could see the components through the back glass and I never noticed this with my original device.
I got another replacement the next day which I cannot see through the glass and I have tested In water perfectly fine.
This could all be coincidence but I thought I would share my experience!

Thank you people for your vies, yes I took my phone in pool, but when I came out everything was fine, weather temperature was around 34°c, after that I went in ac room and when I tried to click picture, I saw fog on front and back lenses. I kept my phone in sunlight for few hours and everything went away, my phone is working perfecly fine no issues except stamina mode, the white strip under Sim tray is also white, it hasn't turn red so I guess water did not go through ports, I think that moisture might have went in through mic or headphones jack, because ports were all tightly closed. I am scared to go to service center because center near my place is very rude, they blame everything on customer only, I am happy that my phone is working fine, what if I go there and they ask for money to fix it . I don't want to screw up my phone, I bought it 2 months back
Hi guys,
These forums has helped me a lot so here I am trying to give something back. So here's what happened.
I have just received my Z3C from the Sony service centre as the waterproofness of this phone is sadly, not that reliable. I went swimming in a river with this phone while taking pictures and shooting videos, and the next thing I know. Bam, the screen goes dark and the phone was dead. I did not submerge it for a long period of time either. I took underwater videos for around 2-3 minutes and I resurface it again. It worked flawlessly for the first 2 videos but the third time is really not the charm. I thought the battery was dead at first but later that night when i tried to charge it, i saw water vapours inside the lens and that was when I realised the horror that I am in.
I did secure the two flaps many times before diving into the water so its not an issue of carelessness. The incident also happened after 1 and a half months after I owned the phone so I don't think the integrity of the rubber flaps would have been compromised by constant opening and closing for charging by then. If it is, then it is another thing that we should be worried about.
What I think happened was the current in the river (although not strong) might have had an effect on the integrity of the rubber flaps and caused the leak. I have submerged my Z3C in the bath tub a couple of times before and it was fine. However, the currents of the river might not be that forgiving towards the phone. THEREFORE, I urge caution towards my fellow Z3C users when taking it towards watery places as you might taste the same tears of disappointment just as I had.
Don't get me wrong, the phone is awesome, and I still love it very much, but lets just say that I will not be putting it even near a glass of water next time around. Hope this post can help save a few people from suffering the same fate as I am in the future.
Thank You.
Curious if you're going to make a warranty claim. The waterproof feature is a Catch-22: there's no way to substantiate the user's claim that the flaps were all properly sealed, so Sony will say that water intrusion was due to carelessness.
I washed my phone under tap and screen went after 20 min black.
Then I vacuumed the hell out of it, both flaps open, one connected to the vacuum cleaner.
Flap markers were white btw.
After vacuuming screen was alive again, but digitizer was dead.
Warranty service accepted the phone, no problem with that, but they couldn't fix it.
At first after the screen change, the vol up didn't work.
So I sent it back, when I got it mic didn't work: my calls had noise and voice wasn't audible, plus other party got his own echo back. Without noise supression It was usable.
Sent it back, but after returning mic was still broken, vibrator didn't work and pressure test showed only +-1mbar (it should be about +-10mbar) so it wasn't waterproof anymore.
I made a complaint and got a new phone.
All that back and forth took about 6 weeks.
This is just bad luck. You have a faulty unit. Mine is working fine after some movies into the pool, soda spilled all over it, etc. Thanks for the friendly warning
waterPOOF
A friendly reminder:
Just don't use the phone on any type of water, though it can survive on the rain but as far as i concern, i don't trust the waterproof/water resist of xperia. Don't also use water to cooloff your phone if it overheats. Remove any protective case and cool it down for a minute.
For more protection, you can look for a waterproof pouch with double zip lock if you want to use the phone in watery place. I always use that kind of pouch and i can still shoot nice photos.
Some Info regarding Waterproof and Water Resistant [HERE]
hey,
i got my phone when it came out and washed it every other week with tap water. last week it suddenly turned itself off 20 minutes after i washed it. it kept turning off with three vibrations. after a day i could start it again. two days later the touchscreen didn't work in the center stripe. i sent it in and got a new phone after 3 days. just setting it up right now
i'm disappointed but also happy. anyway, just ordering two new phones for my family which makes it #3 and 4.
so yes, it's not perfectly water proof, but the service was ok (after 3 calls).
cheers,

Oh wow, to think that someone had actually suffered the same fate as I am. For the warranty claim, I did sent it back for repairs but after I got back, it just came back with more problems. As a result I had to send and resend the phone for a total of 3 times. In the end, I also requested a new phone and they did agree to it (After countless phone calls and arguments). However, the overall process took me over 4 months (no kidding) and god knows how I feel during that time. Not every country's Sony service centre was excellent and mine was particularly bad. Still, I'm glad you could get a new one for your troubles as well .
People,
I have an old z3c, second hand, with back cover replaced by my self and a shabby flap.
Trust me, I am a perfect unconscious without care for his own things.
This to say that I'm used to clean my phone under tap water, and during these holidays, I make some videos under river and waterfall, and also a lot of photo and video under the sea!
Yes, I'm unconscious and luky, but just to say that not all z3c are defective in waterproof
When a phone or anything says ''water proof'' to me that means ''Slightly better than water resistant''
I dont ever intend to submerge my Z3C in water. To me it just adds a little bit of peace of mind when it comes to spills or accidental submersion and a quick pull out of water.

Why wash it every week? haha..
I also met this problem last week. It was not really water-proof.
I only washed it for 30 seconds and the screen went dead. I send it to the support to repair it, after they check it they found it is impossible to repair. Hopeful they send me a new one back. I swear this time I will never trust its water proof.
One thing i have noticed about the seals under the flaps. They need to be carefully cleaned BEFORE you close up the flap. Not a problem for the one over the SIM card as its rare to open this.
Major issue i think for the one over the USB port. I have usually found that after opening there are "bits" in there where they can interfere with the seal. They accumulate on the phone and case in normal use, and then drop in when you open the flap.
I use a magnetic charger and really only use the USB for large file transfers from or to the PC, and under my PC screen i have a good quality paintbrush and i check to make sure no hairs get left behind.
The seal just slides in much like a lot of "tough" cameras. Pressing the flap in hard makes no difference. The seal and mating surface must be clean and smooth.
Enough!!!
I have read so many different posts about this phone not being waterproof and it really has to stop!
I have had my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact since november last year and I have no idea about how many times it has been under water...
This phone is sold to be waterproof!
There are countless of commercials from Sony showing the phone used under water!
If the phone gets damaged because it has been under water it is a warranty issue (if you have not closed the flaps... ) because you have a faulty unit - they do exist you know, but that does not mean that all Z3C are faulty...
You can use this phone down to 1,5 meters depth for 30 minutes without being afraid of anything - the phone is WATERPROOF...

The fact that you have read countless post about this phone being not waterproof just proved my point. I did not post this just so I can diss the Z3C. It is a great phone and I have submerged and wash it under the tap water before and it worked fine. But with time (1 moth and a half) that is not so anymore. However, the purpose of this post is only to serve as a friendly WARNING for fellow Z3C users. If you have read my post and you still feel confident about its waterproofness when some commercial tells you so, then by all means submerge it as you please. I'm just here to exercise caution as I do not want others to suffer the same fate as I did. When your phone is breached by water, and your screen goes completely dark, dead and the warranty no longer covers it....Well, I hope you are a rich person :fingers-crossed:

Well my point is that there are many threads (not countless... ) about this phone not being waterproof and that is just WRONG!
This phone is build to be waterproof, it is commercialized to be waterproof (and yes!!! when Sony focuses that much on how you can use this phone under water then you should also expect the phone to actually be waterproof...) and it is sold to be waterproof...
As long as the flaps are closed properly it is waterproof!
Every post about the phone not being waterproof is a warranty issue because it's a faulty unit.
It's very nice of you to come with this friendly warning but it's almost the same as saying to people, that they should not drive around on their bicycle because they might risk to get a puncture...
So far my phone has been under water many times - also in rivers with strong water - and there hasn't been any problems what so ever and if it should ever come to the day, that my phone breaks due to this usage then it will be a warranty issue because the phone is supposed to be waterproof... :good:

The problem is imo in the rear glass or screen sealing which starts leaking over time.
Markers under the flaps were white when my phone died after washing under the tap.

Well, so much for SONY standing behind the waterproof claim:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/09/10/sony-changes-stance-on-waterproof-phones-do-not-use-underwater/
This is technically the right thing for Sony to do, but it sure is complete BS that they wait until after they sell millions of these under false pretenses.

Well I will still continue using my phone under water... Sony sold this phone to be waterproof and just because a tech site brings an article about problems it doesn't mean that the normal user should have heard about it...

I agree, but the tech site is doing what Sony isn't, and that's being transparent with this new info. Song is basically making changes to its warranty and support policy without informing the customer. If something does happen to our phones, then Sony will say it's not covered because of this fine print.
If HTC ever makes another compact flagship, Sony would lose me as a customer.

well, add me to the list of people who lost their phone to water damage.
I made the pressure test before entering in a small lake and it all looked alright. after taking some pictures the screen started switching itself on and off.. I immediately switched the phone off, took out the memory and sim cards, left the flaps open and put in in a dry place. Once I got home I put it in a bowl of rice (which is supposed to absorb the remaining humidity) but after a night it still wouldn't switch on.
I have used the phone under water on several occasions before, so it's not that it was faulty from the beginning. What I noticed is that on the inside of the flaps there is a small rubber sealing, which came off almost by itself when I opened the flap to get the water out.. I guess that could be the issue.
Farewell to the z3c forums, I won't spend another 400 bucks on a z3c so for the time being, I'll revert my old s4 mini..
Hey guys,
it seems that every smartphone i own breaks after ~18 months... Now my Z3 is finally gone, i guess.
Problems:
Blurry Pictures, i guess a coating of the lens went off?
One "system UIDs inconsistent" error, since then, whatsapp had "damaged databases" for at least 20 times - factory resettet twice, no difference
REAL bad touchscreen response from time to time. It either doesn't detect inputs at all or thinks you already lifted your finger. Super annoying, especially when typing.
Glas on front AND back is getting loose. The adhesive doesn't hold the phone together anymore
I can shrug off the first two problems (that's something i could have lived with), but not with the bad adhesive tape (??) that doesn't hold the phone together properly. You can look under the screen, it's not that far out (yet!) on the backside of the phone. Has anyone had that problem before? The phone was looked after well, i haven't dropped it, it was ALWAYS in a case. It had a glass screen protector until the touchscreen response got too bad (it didn't get any better after i removed it though).
As for my bad luck, i dropped the phone for the first time ever about an hour ago, since then the power button can't be pushed in properly anymore. The screen survived it miraculously, even though it sticks out quite a bit. I wanted to send it in for repairs next week.
I have the back sticking out problem . I'm using a case now because the service centre says they need 15 days to repair it

I had the same issue with the glass not glued to the chasis anymore. It wasn't sticking out so badly as urs but I took it to repair centre and they repaired it for me. I had also USB charger burn marks on my LCD, so they changed my screen to a new one. I'd recommend you to take it to repair centre. I tried to heat up the adhessive but it didn't work out quite as planed. After the repair it was ok. But then another story happened. WHich isn't connected to this one.
When the glass is lose, you lose the waterproof ability too. The phone can easily take damage from any kind of moisture.
Waterproof ability? Nah, USB seal is gone anyway. It went about a year ago, so i get why there are so many damaged Sony smartphones... They should include a magnetic charging cable in the box. Thanks for reminding me with the screen, the display also has irregular lighting with a corona just above the on screen buttons. Battery runtime also reduced by 50% (9hrs SOT when new; 4.75hrs now after factory reset, i guess they decreased their battery-saving modes with every new android version).
I still have my old red HTC One M7, so repair time won't be an issue. I guess i won't change back to the Z3 but sell it when it's repaired, because it feels too big in my hands and i never liked it quite as much. Funny; I bought the Z3 when i send in my One M7 for repairs (bad camera lens [purple tint], lens cover broke by itself (was not repaired), buttons far to wide inside housing (not repaired) and some other stuff). Every of my 4 smartphones broke after max. 18 months.

Yeah, there are quite a lot broken Sony phones, especially in this area(Screen). I completely agree with you about the magnetic charging cable. I had an issue with that also. I've never reached 9hrs of SOT, I've got this phone for like 6 months or so. Never had it more than 6 hours.
About the updates- yeah. As i've heard, it has decreased by every update. The best battery was with KK, but when I bought it, I already had 5.1.1 preinstalled. It is a good phone, serves all my needs for sure. Doesn't lagg and so on. THere are few things I dislike about it, the camera is underperforming for such a lense and specs. But not terribly underperforming. Think my recent phone (LG G3 ) was taking better shots. It eventually breaks. I had my phone taken to warranty repair twice. Once for screen getting lose, and the LCD burn marks. And then I took it to warranty repair because my camera became blurry and the focus didn't work at all. I tought it was just a piece of dirt behind the lens. but as it turned out, they repaired the LCD again, the upper firing speaker, the camera module, the magnetic charging module and so on. I may have got a bad unit, but the problems are surreal. I paid so much for this phone, but I have never had so much problems with any phone than with this one... Quite dissapointing to be honest. And I'm thinking about the same as you are... Switching away from Sony. This experience is quite terrifying... :crying:

I had it too, I didn't have to pay a cent. It is covered by warranty. And the adhesive might get lose by itself. As it did for me.
They should cover anything which isn't damage by your behavior. Like dropping the phone on the ground and so on

I guess it depends on the repair center then. I'm shocked they would honor it since its out of warranty. Sony rules!

Yeah, As I've heard, they don't act the same in any place. They mostly are very mean. And don't want to help at all. Either they say that you will have to pay for it or just live with the problem. I guess not everyone has like 200$ for a new LCD swap and so on.
Just to be fair, i'd only want to switch back to my One M7 because i loved that phone so much. Also because it still feels too big. The One M7 was even worse, quality-wise.
The Moto RAZR i i had before the HTC worked for a year, only the AUX port was broken and after sending it in, it was ruined (scratched, logo damaged) and i got my money back. Before the Moto, i had an Desire HD that held together pretty well, until the radio went bad. SIM wasn't recognized very often, battery was absolutely DEAD (jumped from 60% to 0% more than once).
What i think is so sad about it, is that you pay ~500€ for a piece of .... that doesn't even hold together for two years. I knew why i didn't sell the "repaired" One M7, you NEED a backup phone these days. Now it's in use for the second time after the Moto G of my girlfriend broke. Probably if they would spend just a LITTLE more on quality than on new features for the next high-end smartphone that has to be released after 6 months i'd be more exited to get a new phone.
I only bought the Z3 because of the battery life (gone with updates) and because i had several friends with Xperias of which none had a problem.

Its out if it's warranty period. So yes they are charging me. But since they need 15 days, I'm not giving it to them

My backcover became slightly undone (adhesive failing). I also had 2 bright spots (0,5cm diameter) on the left and right bottom part of the LED.
Everything was fixed free of charge, they also gave me a new battery (I asked for a replacement although the old battery was still going strong, but I plan on using this phone for quite a while and the old battery probably had way over 300 cycles)

I'm in Florida so anytime I have a problem I have to call customer service and they keep saying they don't do out of warranty repairs anymore. I wish I had a repair center nearby

Damn you are lucky. No repair for me here as garanty period is over, but I have the exact same issues, forward facing glass is getting undone and I have at least 5-6 bright spots on my screen. Really, really annoying when reading. Any idea if I could get it fixed in some no-name shop?
Surprise... After sending in my Z3 on 18.08., i just got it back and i'm in a moral conflict. They sent me a new unit plus new screen protectors. Service-wise, i'm really stunned. It makes me consider buying a Sony again, just for the service... Unfortunately they don't sell a phone i'd want to have right now.
However, my mobile phone contract runs out in 2 months and i got used to my old HTC One m7 again... So i don't know whether i should (and also want to) use the Z3 again for a longer period of time or sell it in it's new condition and get a new phone in 1.5 months. I'd want to have an S7 or Note 7 - especially the S7 would be plain cheap if i'd get it with a contract. If i sold the Z3, the additional costs of getting the S7 would be covered for 18 months of a 24 months contract period. Hypothetical: If I'd use the Z3 for another two years (won't happen) i'd only save 60€ compared to getting an S7...
Well, i guess those are first world problems. Anyway, i'm really stunned by the service - worst experience yet was motorola when i got back a damaged phone, closely followed by HTC, they repaired half of what was broken on the phone...
Sell the Z3, especially if it's brand new, you could get a good price for it. Then invest that money into something new.
I had this problem too, service replaced my phone's screen and metal case for free because this is Sony's fault.
How are any of you guys out of warranty? Mine came with a 2 year warranty in the UK, and it hasn't even been out 2 years yet.
I had to send it to service centre twice. First time digitizer broke, second time replacement screen was peeling away and screen was getting discoloured. Both times also got the magnetic dock port fixed, but I think that was damaged because I was using the wrong insert in the magnetic dock (you need to use the tightest one). I'm a bit disappointed that such an expensive phone breaks this easily, but the service has been excellent.
