Problem: My vs980's touchscreen is at times erratic and sometimes will not register touches in the statusbar area therefore rendering the phone mostly unusable. This first occurred about 2 days ago but wasn't bad. It went away and i didn't think anything of it but today it's back and much worse. Note that i didn't flash any new rom or make any real changes to my phone in the period that this happened.
------------------------------------------------------
Info:
Phone: vs980 ROM: Xdabbeb's VS980 1.1.0
------------------------------------------------------
Symptoms:
-The screen usually won't register taps/downward swipes in the statusbar area.
-Pinching the phone tightly together doesn't help any(it had been reported that doing that fixed some issues that some people had)
-Phantom taps in the statusbar area (which cause the screen to turn off. this happens as frequently as 10-ish second intervals)
-The phantom taps/Unresponsiveness seem completely isolated to the statusbar area (i mean, to the best of my ability to detect, exactly the pixel space the statusbar takes up, i tried this at 480 and 400dpi)
-Knock Code will not usually work with the screen off. Sometimes it's iffy with the screen on.
-The screen seems to be able to detect swipes in a direction parallel to the statusbar (ex: i can move a launcher screen left/right from the statusbar area, but it won't register a tap a downward motion in the statusbar area)
-I booted into recovery and weird things seemed to happen. There seemed to be a few phantom taps(which is dangerous) I reflashed my rom and that didn't help.
-I left the phone alone plugged up in a window for 30 minutes or so. The problem went away for 10 or so minutes and came back. Not sure if that matters..
-When scrolling or anything involving movement, the phantom taps basically make it hell to do anything
-----------------------------------------------------
Things I've tried:
-Updating touch fw in hiddenmenu. It appeared to fix it for all of 30 seconds. Knock Code worked with the screen off. But then it just came back.
-Reflashing my rom
-Rebooting
-Wiping cache/Dalvic
-Cleaning the screen/Hands
----------------------------------------------------
What i haven't tried:
-Complete TOT back to stock- I really don't want to do this
-Any more ideas?
----------------------------------------------------
Help is very much appreciated

I've been getting very strange/unwanted touchscreen issues for a while now. It seems to happen randomly and for hours at a time. When I press the power button to wake the phone and turn the screen on, I can't even drag the unlock slider to unlock the phone. It takes numerous wake/sleep power button presses until I can get the screen to respond to my finger. Sometimes I'll be typing and it will go crazy and highlight buttons back and forth quickly, usually two or three letters almost always off to the left side of the screen. When this happens I am unable to get it to stop or register any other screen presses. I have to press the power button and then press it again to wake it and I'm stuck at the unlockable lock screen. Only after repeated attempts does it finally get through and the problem will go away for a while, only to come back later.
I have used the program 'Dotty' to track the touch points and I noticed that it will sometimes show a multicolored touch point off to the left of the screen and it will jump around, and it won't detect any other new touch points.
Soooo I think my screen touch sensor is messed up somehow. Does anyone else have this happen? Seems to have started when I flashed the kernel to get rid of the 30 fps cap. I have recently flashed Fresh 3.1.0.1 and still have this problem, different kernel with that rom correct? I'll try to get a video up sometime to show this in action...
Yes, I've been having the exact same issue. I even did a hard reset, with the assumption that it was an app. My plan was to add them back slowly until I got the issue, the problem was it happened as soon as the phone rebooted on the reflash. I have no idea what the issue is, but its very frustrating.
I'm running 2.2 stock...
Some people have reported touch screen problems with netarchy's kernel. There is usually a revision to correct this problem for people who are experiencing it. I suggest you carefully read over the OP in that thread and determine what kernel is right for you. There is usually a version specifically for Fresh users also.
MIGHT i ask what widgets are you running??
i talked about it before when running the pre-official ota rom.
it was my htc music widget (half sized one) i had running on the home screen.. caused lag like a mofo, couldnt swipe most of the time, capacitive buttons wouldnt react, pressing the app drawer button wouldnt respond till 5 seconds later...
AS A MATTER OF FACT.
im running fresh 3.1.0.1 + latest kernel + music widget on home screen.. LAAAGGG like before. removing it makes things snappier again.
YEP. Its happening again.
when i ran the STOCK Official rooted rom, with music widget on home screen didnt produce this lag and poor touch input, even with kernel it didnt produce this problem.
Mine is fine, no screen problems!!! stock rooted rom!!
Hi,
The navigation and status bars, and notification shade (presumably because they are controlled by the same system process) are freezing very often on my Nexus 4. It seems to happen after unlocking the phone when it's been on standby - either the little dotted circle persists for 2-3 seconds or the navigation buttons begin the 'fade in' animation, and freeze during it for a 2-3 seconds. The status bar is also affected, the time disappears from the top-right corner and the notification shade is unresponsive while frozen, then moving rapidly as it catches up with my finger movements that occurred during the freeze.
The most confusing part of the issue is that it has persisted across a full system wipe. It originally began on PA 3.99, and so I decided to do a factory wipe and go back to stock, blaming the ROM. I made sure to wipe all storage and settings, caches and restore the stock recovery. This worked for a short while but the issue has returned as bad as ever. It seems to go away temporarily when I reboot, but returns fairly soon. The only link between the installations is whatever settings are restored from Google's servers when setting up the phone. Could they be at fault? Has anyone else had the issue, or does anyone know of a fix?
Thanks.
I searched for this a lot, and found a lot of people experiencing similar things but not exactly what I happen to have. So here is what happens:
1. first screen freezes and you can't touch anything (icons, nav keys)
2. ghost touches start (as if someone touches screen quickly in lots of places), and this causes apps to start at random, numbers are dialed, random strings of characters are being input, etc.
The only thing I can do is to turn off screen, then turn back on and it will unfreeze the screen, and stop ghost touches for a few moments. It will not stop randomly dialed calls so I often have explaining to do to a lot of people why I have called them. In short it's a nightmare. My phone is practically unusable.
It all started just a week ago. I did a factory reset back to the same custom rom - helped for 2 days, and then problem came back. I wiped everything (including internal memory), and flashed a different custom rom - problem appeared within 10 minutes of starting the phone. Both were 5.1 custom roms. Has anyone had this happen?
I found out it can be either faulty screen or battery, but I have no idea how to determine which. I do not want to try replacing one after the other. Is there a way to figure out the cause of the problem?
I will try to take a video of what happens.
Just got a Moto X Pure (Style XT15752) (Dual SIM India variant) a few weeks ago to replace a OnePlus that refused to charge.
Running on TruePureX MM ROM at the moment with Frankenclark kernel.
Had a few issues with ghost touches on the navigation bar early on but I always assumed it was due to moisture on the screen or something because it would always disappear in a few seconds (and in the meantime I'd give the screen a wipe with a cloth or such)
But now the nav bar completely refuses to accept touch input. When I enable show touches (in developer options), touches on the navigation bar area are not registered whatsoever.
Saw a couple threads with similar if not exactly the same issue but no solution as such.
The weird thing is that this part of the screen works perfectly in TWRP suggesting a software issue.
Tried wiping system and reflashing the ROM already with no success.
Any suggestions guys? Trying to fix this without going to service as that will take a while and I don't have a spare phone to use in the meantime. (My work seems to revolve around being connected 24/7)
P.S. Also using Button Savior to use the phone at the moment. Only the Home button works, not back and multitasking.

It's an inherent issue with some displays present on the Moto G4. It most often happens when you charge your phone. Too much current builds into the frame of the display and you get weird ghost and jitter touches.
No way around it unless you send it in, and even then it may be only a temporary fix.
I also face this issue. Unable to find solid solution for this. Finally i decied to go for custom rom like RR and Invicta. This still comes occasionally(when Heats too much during phone charging)

On my phone this happens while not charging. Seems to happen about one out of every 3 times the phone is unlocked using the fingerprint sensor. Locking the screen and unlocking via a pin seems to be a reliable way of getting past the issue. Though occasionally it happens on the pin entry screen before it the pin has been entered. Needless to say, it IS annoying.
Same problem which is fixed.
I had this problem with the factory firmware too, intermittent bouts of the phone going crazy with phantom touches on my Moto G4. I sent it to Motorola/Lenovo after the supplier gave me their phone number and they did find the problem and fix it. Now I can play graphic intensive games even during fast charge and the phone is awesome for once. : )
Please note they will fix it for free if in warranty and bootloader not yet modified.
Pressing power button to turn off the display and then pressing power button again to turn the display back on will provide temporary relief from jittery screen. I noticed that the jittery screen has twice subsided over time but came back twice immediately after OS upgrade so blaming the problem on charging, or hardware doesn't seem accurate.

As a last ditch effort prior to buying a replacement phone I deleted all apps I installed, reset phone and reinstalled fresh copies of most if the apps I needed.
I don't recall every thing I did but my focus was to delete everything I could and then reset phone back to factory state. After reinstalling, my jittery problem went away and has not returned. Your millage may very, so no promises. Phil

phone going crazy
Hi,
I am having the same exact problem. I have observed that Google Assistant is intruding because each time this happens, Google Assistant is trying to run. Reboot is a temporary fix but the problem persists. I have removed most of the third party apps just to see if anything changes but it did not work.
This is not something that was happening from the start. I have the phone for about 2 months put the problem only started a couple weeks ago. I would love to hear if there is a solution and what. Thanks
Sadly, but compared to the issues visible indoors, in outdoors this Lenovo gift turns complete crap:
youtu.be/dTcHclVEfCg
"Lenovo Moto Z2 Force touchscreen gets completely unusable when getting outdoors! The video is made at about 0 degrees Celsius. So it takes about 30 sec from getting MotoZ2 Frc to sleep with pwr btn (and wakeing up back) to see the touchscreen goes crazy. At -10C, it takes ~5 sec. At +15-20C, after several min it becomes unresponsive and have to use pwr button to recover.
Lenovo, what you have done to Motorola ?!!"
Can it be fixed somehow with changing the upper protective part? I have seen comments that the touchscreen can stop working completely, if peel off the cover part..
