Screen freeze + Ghost touch - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I searched for this a lot, and found a lot of people experiencing similar things but not exactly what I happen to have. So here is what happens:
1. first screen freezes and you can't touch anything (icons, nav keys)
2. ghost touches start (as if someone touches screen quickly in lots of places), and this causes apps to start at random, numbers are dialed, random strings of characters are being input, etc.
The only thing I can do is to turn off screen, then turn back on and it will unfreeze the screen, and stop ghost touches for a few moments. It will not stop randomly dialed calls so I often have explaining to do to a lot of people why I have called them. In short it's a nightmare. My phone is practically unusable.
It all started just a week ago. I did a factory reset back to the same custom rom - helped for 2 days, and then problem came back. I wiped everything (including internal memory), and flashed a different custom rom - problem appeared within 10 minutes of starting the phone. Both were 5.1 custom roms. Has anyone had this happen?
I found out it can be either faulty screen or battery, but I have no idea how to determine which. I do not want to try replacing one after the other. Is there a way to figure out the cause of the problem?
I will try to take a video of what happens.

Constant Touch Screen Malfunctions

Hey,
I'm sorry but I can't find anything on common touch screen problems..
My touch screen is constantly just not working. It started I think after a droplet of water(one singular drop) fell on the screen for a second(right in the middle) and it stopped working for about 2 hours..Since then I will have it working fine for a couple days, then it will just simply stop working. No response to anything at all. I can restart it and sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. I usually just end up sitting it down and when I come back 20-30 minutes later it works again.
Now, today, it has been doing it constantly. I can get it to work after multiple resets and stuff, but then it will stop again. Works some, then stops, etc, but I am not doing anything difference except resetting it..
Is there anything where I can troubleshoot the problems with my screen and see what is wrong with it?

Well I don't know how you searched but there are multiple threads on touch screen problems. Here's one search I did using the Google sticky post:
http://www.google.com/search?as_q=t...rum.xda-developers.com&as_rights=&safe=images
However, your problem is curious as it's the opposite of the one many get. Some folks find when the device has been on for a while and gets warm then it's screen stops responding. You have the opposite, it stops working and then leaving it brings it back again. I suspect though it's related. By leaving it for a while it cools down and works again.
It's not good news and we have no reliable fix. It is not thought to be a touch screen fault (for many folks anyway) so changing the screen may not change anything.
If it still has the problem after a hard reset then it's a Warranty replacement or repair I'm afraid.

Certain area in screen not responsive

Hi.
I'm using the device for a month now and today a weird thing started to happen. There's a certain area in the screen that's just not responsive.
I haven't dropped the phone ever and I'm not rooted. It happened while I was customizing my homescreen with Nova Launcher.
I've tried a factory reset, I have also pushed the power button for 10 sec.. Nothing helped. The first occurrence of this was that my screen was completely unresponsive, I rebooted and then only the certain area was unresponsive.
Thanks in advance.
Best to request a RMA from Google.
The thing is that it worked perfectly until now. Also, sometimes it works for couple of minutes, then it becomes completely unresponsive, and when I lock->unlock then the certain area is unresponsive.
update
You have a faulty device, you are going to have to do a RMA.
Are you using touch control or similar sweep2wake apps with a custom kernel?
If that's the case you should delete it.
How come it hasn't happened until now? I am not using any custom kernel and I have done factory reset so there aren't any apps on the device.
UPDATE: *Sometimes* when I touch the "dead" area and it works, the whole screen becomes unresponsive immediately. What could have happened?

Troubleshoot Random Resets?

Hello
I'm getting 1-2 restarts almost daily, and what is consistent is that the phone will short-vibrate once, then a pause of about 8 seconds, then two quick short-vibrates in succession (about .25 sec apart) and then the phone restarts.
This can happen when in my pocket, it can happen while actively using it, can also happen when just sitting there on my desk with screen on. I haven't seen a pattern regarding app use or activity triggering the restart.
I posted a question a month ago about how people with Androids can troubleshoot restarts. There HAS to be a way (app, etc) that allows you to see crashlogs **without** rooting your phone. Yet, I got no replies here to my last post.
Is this really such a hard thing to do with Android? Please, tell me if I'm wrong and missing something completely obvious. I'm right now factory resetting my phone cause I can't figure what's causing this.
Thanks in advance for the help.
I have the some.
Any once have fix for this random reboots ?
Same problem at any moment. And sometimes it stays at a boot loop.
I have changed the firmware to a custom one and the problem persist.

It's an inherent issue with some displays present on the Moto G4. It most often happens when you charge your phone. Too much current builds into the frame of the display and you get weird ghost and jitter touches.
No way around it unless you send it in, and even then it may be only a temporary fix.
I also face this issue. Unable to find solid solution for this. Finally i decied to go for custom rom like RR and Invicta. This still comes occasionally(when Heats too much during phone charging)

On my phone this happens while not charging. Seems to happen about one out of every 3 times the phone is unlocked using the fingerprint sensor. Locking the screen and unlocking via a pin seems to be a reliable way of getting past the issue. Though occasionally it happens on the pin entry screen before it the pin has been entered. Needless to say, it IS annoying.
Same problem which is fixed.
I had this problem with the factory firmware too, intermittent bouts of the phone going crazy with phantom touches on my Moto G4. I sent it to Motorola/Lenovo after the supplier gave me their phone number and they did find the problem and fix it. Now I can play graphic intensive games even during fast charge and the phone is awesome for once. : )
Please note they will fix it for free if in warranty and bootloader not yet modified.
Pressing power button to turn off the display and then pressing power button again to turn the display back on will provide temporary relief from jittery screen. I noticed that the jittery screen has twice subsided over time but came back twice immediately after OS upgrade so blaming the problem on charging, or hardware doesn't seem accurate.

As a last ditch effort prior to buying a replacement phone I deleted all apps I installed, reset phone and reinstalled fresh copies of most if the apps I needed.
I don't recall every thing I did but my focus was to delete everything I could and then reset phone back to factory state. After reinstalling, my jittery problem went away and has not returned. Your millage may very, so no promises. Phil
. I have touch screen issue(ghost touch) but this time not screen burn issue.. Now there is in winter.. I have checked battery temperature with ex kernel manager. When i go outside in fog or cool weather and when battery temprature goes to less than 20 degree Celsius phone gonna mad..back key home button automatically pressed..Is there any solution? phone going crazy
Hi,
I am having the same exact problem. I have observed that Google Assistant is intruding because each time this happens, Google Assistant is trying to run. Reboot is a temporary fix but the problem persists. I have removed most of the third party apps just to see if anything changes but it did not work.
This is not something that was happening from the start. I have the phone for about 2 months put the problem only started a couple weeks ago. I would love to hear if there is a solution and what. Thanks
Sadly, but compared to the issues visible indoors, in outdoors this Lenovo gift turns complete crap:
youtu.be/dTcHclVEfCg
"Lenovo Moto Z2 Force touchscreen gets completely unusable when getting outdoors! The video is made at about 0 degrees Celsius. So it takes about 30 sec from getting MotoZ2 Frc to sleep with pwr btn (and wakeing up back) to see the touchscreen goes crazy. At -10C, it takes ~5 sec. At +15-20C, after several min it becomes unresponsive and have to use pwr button to recover.
Lenovo, what you have done to Motorola ?!!"
Can it be fixed somehow with changing the upper protective part? I have seen comments that the touchscreen can stop working completely, if peel off the cover part..

Touchscreen buggy

Just this morning, out of nowhere, I started experiencing random touchscreen jumps and touches. My phone just registers random touches after a few seconds of use before completely disabling the touchscreen. This mostly happens on the bottom left but its random touches. The only way to temporarily fix it is locking and unlocking the device. I tried a soft and several hard resets which fixed the issue for a few minutes but eventually brought back the problem in an hour or two. Is this a hardware or software problem? Should I attempt to install a custom rom to fix it? My model is the US99721E.
