FM Radio in the Note 4 - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 General

T-mobile is locking down the FM radio tuner in our Note 4.
It is built in to all models but the carriers choose to restrict the chip. It's very popular in other countries and they refuse to explain why they won't let consumers access the feature and pretend like it doesn't exist for our phones.
The Sprint version can use the Nextradio App to use the FM tuner because Sprint has a deal with the app makers for an ad revenue cut.
T-mobile pretends to be the UNcarrier and I switched to them from Verizon for that reason but it seems that they're just as bad as Verizon with painfully slow updates and locked down features.
There is already a campaign to contact the carriers and convince them to unlock the feature http://freeradioonmyphone.org/.
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? I would threaten to switch to Sprint but that's an empty threat because everyone knows their service is hot garbage.
Would be great if there was a softmod solution for root users but I don't think this is possible....

I would also like to see this feature active on my n4.

I tweeted
@JohnLegere @Tmobile John why can't we have FM radio. Tmobile claims Music Freedom but Sprint wins this round.
Maybe everyone who wants this feature should do the same.

Although it sounds like a great idea, I'm wondering if they would have to resubmit for FCC certification to enable it. If that's the case, it's NOT going to happen.

I dont think radio is locked, it probably doesn't exist in Tmo Note 4. Sprint version most likely using different modem which has fm capability.

Will be awesome especially for those international trips

I have no idea if maybe the Tmobile, AT&T, and Verizon versions don't have it but I really don't think this is the case although it is possible that it is physically disabled.
As far as FCC re-certification I wouldn't be surprised if the FCC was willing to give a pass...

I miss this feature that once graced my old HTC devices.

If you are truly unhappy with T-Mobile then switch. No one is stopping you. The whole thing about updates being slow is taken out of context because, for one, you act as if everyone has Lollipop already which is untrue. And two, I can count many other times where T-Mobile was in fact first to the punch and some times where they actually skipped an update because a newer one quickly came out. Going from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and skipping 4.4.3 for example. Do not completely discredit the carrier because of one minor misstep or because some feature we really don't know why isn't on our phones. There's plenty of online radio apps out there and iheart radio has many local stations.

It was okay at first, but the fact that you needed headphones plugged in (i guess to act as an antenna?) ruined it for me.

People in poor signal areas might not be able to use iheart. For example my coverage in my local park is bad, or was last year anyway, waiting for nice weather to go back, and if I enjoyed FM radio then having the ability to use my phone to do so would be nice without having to hope I have a data signal.

If loading your phone up with some MP3s somehow isn't good enough then for less than $10, and in some cases $5, you can get a portable FM radio that is smaller than your phone if you absolutely feel you need it.

I'm not about to give kudos to a carrier for updating a phone. Especially not a phone that hasn't even been out a year. Add to the fact that Samsung does all the heavy lifting as far as developing their updates. I will fault a carrier for disabling features built into my phone for the sole purpose of pushing some other agenda. Knowing the reason is moot if the reason has nothing to do with lowering the quality of the product.

I guess my question is why does someone need to justify to anyone why they would want this feature? Further more an MP3 isn't exactly a replacement for news and talk shows.
IF it's built into the phone its kind of shady to disable it.

Again, no one knows why exactly it is not on our phones and that Sprint is the only one. Furthermore it is NOT a feature that is on be default, it must be 'Activated'... Until recently no one even knew that the phone had it. Also, most news and talk shows are on AM radio.

Yay the "there is no view but mine" part of XDA has come out...*clap clap clap*
I don't care one way or the other about the FM radio, I just think you demanding people do things your way as it must be the "right" way is arrogant.

I'm not demanding anything. I'm simply stating that there is an alternative... And the fact that this alternative is so cheap and simple begs the question why it's even an issue at all. If not activating an FM radio in your phone is enough to make you consider another carrier then why get that phone in the first place knowing that it wasn't there to begin with? You guys are basically complaining simply because you can and the fact that I can bother you so much by solving your issue with a simple answer proves how dumbfounded the issue really is.

My question still stands why should anyone have to justify their preference to want to use the FM feature on the phone if it has it? I see this right in line with disabling different NFC payment options, or how Apple wouldn't allow the Kindle app to purchase books just to make it more difficult and thus push users to their ecosystem.
I pay for my device. It will be paid in full in two months, its mine. Whether or not I will use a portion of it should be no concern of T-Mobile. I don't use the UV sensor, it's still there.

Saying T-Mobile is just as bad as Verizon with slow updates and locked down services is just crazy. When's the last time you bought a non Nexus device on Verizon that had an unlocked bootloader? Now when's the last time you bought a device on T-Mobile that had a locked bootloader? Don't think I really need to say much more.

This is the main reason why people buy the international version, these US carriers always disable stuff on their phones, Sprint AT&T Verizon all disable download Booster from their note 4 and s5 I didn't get an international version of this phone but I definitely see why somebody would

Fact: The Note 4 HAS an FM radio reciever. http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/phone_details.jsp?ensembleId=SPHG900BKS&flow=AAL&isDeeplinked=true&INTNAV=GalaxyS5LP:ShopNow:041114
Fact: T-mobile has chosen not to activate the software to communicate with the FM chipset.
Fact: International Models do not have it activated either. Meaning Samsung does NOT, by default, use the software.
Hope: The Lollipop update that is finally now in T-Mobile's hands might have it.
Hope: If Not, maybe it will be possible in AOSP roms i.e. CyanogenMod.

I don't think its just the ROM I think you also need to be connected to the specific network when you log into dropbox. I am with Telus and when I first setup my phone my data wasn't working so I was using WiFi and I did not get my dropbox space. When I got my data working and signed onto dropbox with my data I got an email right away that the space had been added to my account.

actually, after some research i think it may be APK related, as in the APK that came with the SGS3 (where it was enabled) enabled it on the site. a lot of other non-SGS3 users are doing this by taking the SGS3 APK and installing it on their phone and they get the space. mixed results on keeping it though.

I think the Rogers might have had the SGS3 dropbox apk included. im just glad to get it since AT&T deprived us of what every other SGS3 owner was getting free
i had a '99 GSR with bolt-ons and ITR cams / tuned around 170 WHP... it got stolen several years ago so I got an '04 WRX and added the usuals + a VF39, brembos and a nice tune to 290 WHP / 274 ft-lbs =D
I just got it as well I am on AT&T.
I was freaked out by the android is upgrading dialog that came up after the app switch (which makes dropbox a system app) to get the 48GB on AT&T. everything seems ok now anyway.
i had almost 80 gig's before i got my GS3. Then when i signed in on my new phone it cut me down to 30 gig's. not sure what happened but i want what i had back! HAHA not like i would ever use it all.

Related to their service? Wasn't able to find it. But, yeah the site design is crappy with no option to select the memory for the find 5 white version.
EDIT: So, apparently, they still have not started selling the phone. The white version not able to add to cart because memory option not available and for the midnight black version, it is saying currently not in stock. But, the shipping rate seems to be an amazing Rs 5, so seems really good overall, if it does turn out to have 3 months replacement warranty..
Anyway, lets update here, if any one of us finds anything new. I am very much interested in getting the phone, but may go for nexus 4 again if a 32gb version is announced.
I never thought this day would come where I would part so easily with my Nexus 4. Even with the announcement of the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One I didn’t care too much about those devices. I love pure Android and how clean it runs. But there was something about the Oppo Find 5 that attracted me so much. Maybe it’s the fact that Oppo is doing something different and really trying to make software for the consumers and not something gimmicky. I’ve never been a fan of Android skins like Sense, Motoblur and Touchwiz, but Oppo isn’t just another skin, It’s more like a custom ROM on steroids. The reason I say this is because as of now they are the only Android phone manufacturer that update their firmware twice a month with features requested by the users. Let’s face it, update’s matter. When you ask people why they buy a Nexus device one of the top 3 reasons is “It get’s updates”. Similar to how Cyanogenmod implements features, Oppo does the same and since it’s GPL Compliant, with its kernel source code released. This means developers from all over the world can work together and make the Find 5 even better. :good:

Tips for enjoying NO ROOT on S7E - Please post!

So I'm new to the S7E. Only had it about a month. Luckily I didn't have to wait long for the official Android N 7.0 upgrade... Unfortunately there is no root available, which I'm not used to...all of my previous devices have always had full root with some pretty decent rom development. So a non-root device is new to me.
I'm guessing there may be others out there like myself who may have picked up a S7/S7E from people who were selling their older devices waiting for "the next big thing"... So like myself, those people are having to go thru this learning curve later in this devices life cycle. As an example, I didn't know the S7E & S7 (on tmobile g93#t) were not root able before buying this phone. And what root that was available for the MM, the guides were outdated and I never did it I decided to wait for nougat and see what happens. Anyway here we are!
I'd like to try and get some people to post some tips and suggestions for living and enjoying a no root phone especially when you're used to a rooted phone and all those goodies that come with customizing from root.
Samsung themes are ok, not amazing. Many are free and many are paid so you'll have to look around for one you like. The advantage to Samsung themes is it themes things like messages app (default), the notification pull down, the dialer, the lock screen clock. So it can give you a false sense of having a custom rom.
Surely there are more ways to customize these devices without root? Any suggestions?
I am rooted on my S7 edge. I am wishing I had Nougat but so far, am not willing to do without root.

I tried to deal with the root even after the fixes n all that but the random lag was annoying
I'm OK w/o root by using Adhell for ad blocking and EZ Package Disabler to disable the small bits of Tmobile bloat.
I purchased Package Disabler Pro but beyond disabling the T-mobile obvious, what else should I disable?
Is there a list or script I could use? 7.0 Nougat T-mobile variant (no root obviously).

How did you get to activate EZ disabler pro. Mine is stuck at activation with a message. Is there a workaround?

Mine too. I can't get it to activate license.
package disabler is a must! I really didn't like the root on the s7 edge, it was a lot of tweaking to get the lag to go away. The last rooted device I had was my note 7 which I miss still. IMO having a rooted snap dragon s7 edge isn't really all that great. Its just a poor experience and for me, the cons outweigh the pros. I'm pretty happy with nougat and package disabler tweaks. I do miss having root but in this case it blows as I previously stated.

Am I reading this correctly that you have the Nougat engineering kernel for both the S7 and the S7 Edge, and you're demanding money before you'll release it?
I cannot fully root my S7 due to security patch. I have SU app but it does not work. Can I just flash Nougat ROM using ODIN and remove security alert and custom notification on boot? Also, any idea when, if ever, ROOT will be available for PK1 or Nougat users? Thank you.

That's how I read it. Seems he has been a member since 2012 but with not much participation. Not sure how much is trust it to be a working 7.0 kernel though.

I jist found out about disconnect pro.. (just like adhell but better ) it blocks ads in browser like chrome and withing apps itself. This was the main reason why i would root (for adway) but this work perfect without having the annoying VPN key icon on top. With this and package pro i dont really need to root. Nougat is super smooth
I actually use both Disconnect and AdHell. I find that when I turn off AdHell while Disconnect is still active I see certain ad's here and there (maybe I'm crazy? I dunno). I don't see a way to update the blacklisted stuff in either app? I guess they do their thing in the background as far as updating goes? I dunno.
I tried AdClear but the battery hit was massive (about 30%) pretty high... The adclear guys claim they've improved it but since I found Disconnect and Adhell I'm good.
Nothing work's as good as AdAway did for me- but obviously no root so that's not going to work.
The last versions of package disabler pro do work on Nougat, I've disabled a bunch of stuff (like 90 items?) but then I notice the samsung cloud stuff doesn't sync so no samsung backups... I just left everything enabled, I don't see a noticeable performance difference, I do see a little more battery drain with everything enabled though... I never took the time to figure out which service I disabled that stopped the samsung cloud sync, so I figured just leave 'em all active.
As for the guy wanting donations for the ENG kernel for Nougat, I call 100% Bull Shirt! (anybody watch the good place? LOL)... That post is enough to get you BANNED imo. People here HELP each other, we don't charge for that help. ** IF the ENG kernel exists for 7.0, it'll surface WITHOUT your help. **

It's all a joke. JusMEJOSE claimed the same thing on the Note 7 forums when the Note 7 came out. Everyone was excited to think it would have root right away and when everyone asked him to release it, he disappeared. People tried to contact him for weeks and he acted like a prick and would not even answer their messages. With that kind of record, Good luck. Only a demented person would believe that if he had it, he would release it. He lies and expects people to not remember? I think he does it for the attention. My memory is pretty good and I remember deceiving people very well. How about releasing it and then asking those who benefited to donate instead? That's what a decent person would do.

Can anyone verify if Hotspot works on Essential using Verizon Gradfathered UDP?
I currently have the grandfathered Verizon Unlimited Data Plan and I have to root using the build.prop hack to enable Hotspot on my Pixel XL. I used to have the Nexus 6P and I didn't have to root to get Hotspot and I really would prefer not to root if I don't have to. I need the Hotspot feature and I will not pay for it (don't get me going on this BS by verizon). I was hoping that the essential phone would allow hotspot without rooting. Can anyone confirm for me that Hotspot is working out of the box for Verizon Grandfathered UDP??? I will place my order ASAP if it works. I appreciate any help!

Nope.
Nexus 6P, 5X and most non-Verizon compatible unlocked phone do not do the provision check that is required for Verizon.
I doubt the Essential will have the check.
I'm on Verizon and it doesn't matter anyway, since the legacy unlimited plans are more expensive than the current plans once your contract runs out.
I have four lines and my bill will go up by $80/month.

I haven't had a contract with Verizon in years, still on old unlimited data plan, new plans are throttled after so much data

I got under contract so as not to pay the $20/month per line increase for unlimited two years ago.
I'm moving to the (old?) new plan because the $80/month increase on my bill will be painful.
They introduced new plans today that cost more. So I switched to the other plan yesterday.
Anyway pay more, get less. Same old story.
I doubt the build.config on the Essential phone will have the provision line.
The Nexus and non-branded Pixel phones do not and work right out of the box on Verizon for tethering.
The specs mention that the Essential Phone has four microphone noise cancellation, which is fairly unusual (most phones stick with three microphones at most). But I haven't seen this discussed in any reviews.
I'm wondering how good the noise cancellation is during calls. In other words, for your caller on the other end of the line, if your are in a noisy setting with the Essential Phone, how well is background noise cancelled? Are all four microphones even used for this purpose (or only for voice commands and/or video recording)?
In call noise cancellation is something that really hasn't changed or improved since the Nexus One, which was the first phone to use the Audience chip (no one uses it anymore--Qualcomm's inferior noise cancellation built into the chipset has taken over). My Nexus One was so good in noisy setting for calls. I'm still waiting to get a phone that achieves that quality.

Just tried it on mine. Seems to work just fine. I'm already at 30+ Gb this month on my plan so I'm not sure if my speeds are cause I'm being throttled or not. But it didn't give me any issues when I turned it on. Though I'd expect that once it goes and gets VZWs officially certified lable that may change.
Just got mine yesterday.
Have to say, a little disappointed in it compared to the S8+ .
Got notice the camera has shipped, main reason I bought it.
Anyway my question is, how can I get more home screens (I dont root phones) ?
This phone seems to only have one screen.
I usually use an extra screen for a calendar widget...
Also, anyone know if using a skin on the back affects the camera attachment ?
Thanks
To get a 2nd home screen, long hold an icon and move it to the right. The 2nd screen is there and will be created.

Any way to replace the normal font (*.ttf) with custom without root (since we don't have it yet)?
Speaker in status bar
I'm coming from an S7 so maybe I missed something but I have no speaker icon in my status bar. Is this normal for pure Android? I really liked being able to hit it and mute the phone quickly.

No TWRP or factory images if you mess something up.
You can install Magisk with an unlocked boot loader but no way to go back to stock.
Until images or an OTA is released people will be reluctant to root.

VZW Stock V20 fear Blueborne

Is there anything short of throwing away my android watch I can do to protect my V20 from Blueborne? By the time VZW gives us the September security update it will be next spring at the earliest. Do any of the anti malware programs in the playstore help?
I do not wish to root since the one step rooting "apps" themselves are a terrible security risk. They come. from god knows who god knows where and could hide any malware they want in your phone.
Well the good news is this:
- the attacker has to be within 30ft
- your phone will turn on if it was asleep so you'll know when something is going on
- if you've got your lock screen setup with pin, pass or fingerprint the Bluetooth hackers won't be able to by-pass it (at least not currently)
- when the phone is hacked it'll be noticeable it's not like this hack is going to work in the background your phone will noticeably be doing stuff. From what I understand it'll behave as if you're actually operating it which means you'll see activities on your phone I could be wrong but I don't believe this hack can function without being noticeable.
Some tips:
- turn off Smart Lock
- ensure you use secure lock (pin/pass/print)
- use Tasker to automate Bluetooth on/off
Situations like this make me wonder why they don't design Android in such a way that google can just release security patches on the fly without worrying about different configurations like Windows. I hope they do this in the future because being reliant on your carrier and manufacturer to get your releases.
These security risks make me seriously consider getting a Google phone next.
I see this as another stagefright type bug a serious security flaw that never really took off. In fact stagefright was worse in regards the only thing needed is a phone number.

Those are comforting thoughts except wearing an Android watch and hardly ever turning off my screen makes me easy fodder. I'm not sure downloading everything from my docs folder would be noticeable as I discuss it in Tapatalk.
I work in an environment of tech savvy people. Probably not unusual for 50 people to be within 30 feet. Kind of ideal hunting ground really and my phone is seldom locked. I wear an Android watch so bluetooth never off (although I now leave it at home and have disabled bt in my car and leave it off in phone all the time
BTW, I thought the same about Pixel until I read a lot of those users who upgraded to Oreo no longer receive their sms. They can send but not receive so like me they now have to wait for an update!
Wish there were some antivirus app that could stop BlueBorne
There is an app called Bluetooth firewall that I've got that is supposed to monitor Bluetooth connections and only accept ones you approve of. It's by FruitMobile and I had forgotten I purchased it awhile ago. I'd be curious if someone could test to see if this could actually block it.

I suspect if it worked the security firm that discovered the exploit would be selling an app to block BlueBorne. I haven't heard of an actual infections yet but they may be set up to all pop on a certain day like WannaCry.
Google should make their cure available in the Playstore. By the time it goes to LG then to Verizon then to me I'm thinking Xmas at the earliest. VZW showing no urgency since no complaints of infection coming in
As I understand it it does not have to pair with your device.

Yeah I just read that, ridiculous. Honestly surprised these flaws weren't found a long time ago. This is why I think one company should be responsible for on the fly security updates.
We will be lucky to see a patch by the end of the year.

Why not just turn Bluetooth off?
you guys are talking about missing 0 bugs in 300 thousand files equating to roughly 25 gigs of source code. There are bugs that are introduced to android simply because kernel updates. A project this big will never be perfect.

yeah if its that big of a deal use remote instead of bluetooth
Let me be clear. Turning off Bluetooth IS a big deal to me because my smartwatch just became a paperweight but the post I replied to spoke of an extra app to block bluetooth. If blocked it is essentially off right?
Bluetooth is essential for two things my Fitbit and my speaker...a lot of components use Bluetooth now a days. I can't wear headphones at work but I can use a speaker that I clip on my shirt it also allows me to take calls while using equipment.
With phones removing the 3.5mm I would guess Bluetooth is going to be even more important.
Realistically The security risk is fairly low for me (and probably for most) since I am always out and about at work so the chances of anyone having a real opportunity to hack my phone is going to be slim having to stay 30ft with me.
The biggest issue is notifications I use the Fitbit for text notifications on a regular basis and it saves time not having to pull my phone out.

It's sort of confusing considering the exploit allows connections without pairing I am unsure if the app will work. I know it blocks connections when unauthorized devices try to pair but seeing as the exploit requires no pairing it might not work.

Did you get the pay version? Basically what it does is turn off Bluetooth if it detects an unauthorized device. Seems somewhat glitchy right now as it has already turned off Bluetooth once this morning and I am in my house
Edit: nevermind it looks like I didn't put my speaker in the authorized list so it turned it off.

LineageOS fixed the blueborne exploit in one of their recent builds, so until VZW gets off their asses and releases a patch you might just have to use that. At least you guys have a chance of getting an update, the US996 hasnt gotten a security update since December.
