Q2: How do I get my PC to recognize my phone in Fastboot/bootloader Mode ?
Unofficial (Windows) USB Drivers/ADB/Fastboot [Essential PH-1/Mata] by sd_shadowQ3: Does the phone have an unlockable bootloader?
Yes! The bootloader on Essential Phone can be unlocked by following the directions here: https://source.android.com/source/running. To reach fastboot on your Essential Phone press and hold volume down, then press and hold power.Q4: I currently have the grandfathered Verizon Unlimited Data Plan does Hotspot work without Rooting?

Can anyone verify if Hotspot works on Essential using Verizon Gradfathered UDP?
I currently have the grandfathered Verizon Unlimited Data Plan and I have to root using the build.prop hack to enable Hotspot on my Pixel XL. I used to have the Nexus 6P and I didn't have to root to get Hotspot and I really would prefer not to root if I don't have to. I need the Hotspot feature and I will not pay for it (don't get me going on this BS by verizon). I was hoping that the essential phone would allow hotspot without rooting. Can anyone confirm for me that Hotspot is working out of the box for Verizon Grandfathered UDP??? I will place my order ASAP if it works. I appreciate any help!
I want to know how is its photo quality in low light condition? Thanks in advance

Firmware update that improves the camera quality should be ready when the Phone ships

I'm pretty sure stock android includes the tethering checks that prevent devices on a Verizon Unlimited data plan from activating
wifi tethering/hotspot.
Some kind of work around will be likely required.

Nope.
Nexus 6P, 5X and most non-Verizon compatible unlocked phone do not do the provision check that is required for Verizon.
I doubt the Essential will have the check.
I'm on Verizon and it doesn't matter anyway, since the legacy unlimited plans are more expensive than the current plans once your contract runs out.
I have four lines and my bill will go up by $80/month.

I haven't had a contract with Verizon in years, still on old unlimited data plan, new plans are throttled after so much data

I got under contract so as not to pay the $20/month per line increase for unlimited two years ago.
I'm moving to the (old?) new plan because the $80/month increase on my bill will be painful.
They introduced new plans today that cost more. So I switched to the other plan yesterday.
Anyway pay more, get less. Same old story.
I doubt the build.config on the Essential phone will have the provision line.
The Nexus and non-branded Pixel phones do not and work right out of the box on Verizon for tethering.
The specs mention that the Essential Phone has four microphone noise cancellation, which is fairly unusual (most phones stick with three microphones at most). But I haven't seen this discussed in any reviews.
I'm wondering how good the noise cancellation is during calls. In other words, for your caller on the other end of the line, if your are in a noisy setting with the Essential Phone, how well is background noise cancelled? Are all four microphones even used for this purpose (or only for voice commands and/or video recording)?
In call noise cancellation is something that really hasn't changed or improved since the Nexus One, which was the first phone to use the Audience chip (no one uses it anymore--Qualcomm's inferior noise cancellation built into the chipset has taken over). My Nexus One was so good in noisy setting for calls. I'm still waiting to get a phone that achieves that quality.

Just tried it on mine. Seems to work just fine. I'm already at 30+ Gb this month on my plan so I'm not sure if my speeds are cause I'm being throttled or not. But it didn't give me any issues when I turned it on. Though I'd expect that once it goes and gets VZWs officially certified lable that may change.
Just got mine yesterday.
Have to say, a little disappointed in it compared to the S8+ .
Got notice the camera has shipped, main reason I bought it.
Anyway my question is, how can I get more home screens (I dont root phones) ?
This phone seems to only have one screen.
I usually use an extra screen for a calendar widget...
Also, anyone know if using a skin on the back affects the camera attachment ?
Thanks
To get a 2nd home screen, long hold an icon and move it to the right. The 2nd screen is there and will be created.

Any way to replace the normal font (*.ttf) with custom without root (since we don't have it yet)?
Speaker in status bar
I'm coming from an S7 so maybe I missed something but I have no speaker icon in my status bar. Is this normal for pure Android? I really liked being able to hit it and mute the phone quickly.

No TWRP or factory images if you mess something up.
You can install Magisk with an unlocked boot loader but no way to go back to stock.
Until images or an OTA is released people will be reluctant to root.

Hi. Is there any way to get rid of the gray outline and/or hide the bottom "box" completely and just use a swipe gesture? I've tried Nova launcher and it is still there. Will play around with it some more. TIA

From the Sprint site: "Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on required to access Wi-Fi on the device".
Does that mean if I want to use my home wifi to browse the internet on the phone, I can't unless I pony up $30.00 more for the Mobile Hotspot? I'm sure it can't be that way. No smartphone locks out wifi unless you buy a tethering plan. I use wifi all the time on my iphone as it's much faster than the 3g data network is.
http://now.sprint.com/evo/
It's in the fine print at the bottom.
Based on sprint's past phones you will be able to connect to your wifi network at home. You will not be able to connect your laptop with wifi tethering to the phone without the addon hot spot.
I believe it is referring to connecting other devices to the evo via wifi.
I think this is a case of reading too far into the words regardless if sprint was ever dumb enough to do it once we have root it wouldn't matter.
im not to worried about it... gonna be easy as **** to hack that feature in once root is attained
I fear that the OP may be correct; as the OP points out, it does state the following at the bottom of Sprint's webpage (emphasis added):
"Sprint Mobile Hotspot Add-on required to access wi-fi on device"
I am also concerned that Sprint may use this as an excuse not to update the EVO 4G to Froyo 2.2, because I believe Froyo 2.2 provides tethering and wifi hotspot capabilities built into the ROM.

HTC sense on the Hero (1.5) also included a wired tethering feature... sprint just had HTC disable it on their firmware... why wouldnt they do the same with the evo?
I've been under the impression that if you root your device in the future, there will likely be some type of hack that will allow you to use the mobile hotspot feature anyways, i don't think sprint or htc, unless they released some kind of update to stop this(which i'm sure you can stop this update from going through right?), you would be good to go...But, take what i say with a grain of salt because i'm new to this whole rooting ****, I've never personally owned a android handset either.

Once you root your device you can do whatever you want to it, once it's rooted only thing sprint has control over is what passes between your phone and them, data, calls, etc, not your device
I'm running android on a device that isn't even supposed to run android, and as far as sprint is concerned they think I still have WinMo 6.1 on this thing.
I asked my Sprint rep the other day when I was adjusting my plan. Wi-Fi will be "incoming only" and active on the EVO out of the box. If you want "outbound" (i.e. tethering, hotspot etc.) then you pony up the $30.

Yeah i don't know why people would think you would have to pay to be able to use a wifi network of your own(or someone elses), no one would ever charge for that, and i don't even think you possibly could without heavy HEAVY modification of android.
OMG! I'm also new to all of this... I have a few questions? They may have already been answered, pls excuse my ignorance on the matter. I have a Huawei Ascend M860 Android 2.1 (I think) I'm trying to get the mobile hotspot on it (BTW how do I do this?) but I'm afraid to do anything because I dont want to get caught paying more money or finding out that the insurance I'm paying extra won't be valid anymore? I want to know what happens if I "root" my phone will they find out I've done something to it? LOL. sorry every1 but I'm not trying to have 2 bills to pay by the end of the month if I can connect to the internet on my laptop by using my phone. Thnx.
How did everybody here get to know so much about these things. What did u study?

i have t-mobile's unlimited data plan with 2.5gb mobile hotspot and tethering. How do i bypass this limit or block tmobile mobile from seeing how much tethering i've been using?
I did google searches and only found outdated threads. The newer threads states that you can't bypass tmobile's tethering anymore cause they've gotten too good at detecting it. is that true?

This is not true I'm using the T-Mobile Note 3 and I use over 2.5GB of hotspot. I am running a ROM, but it's a stock Deodexed ROM. I did do the whole "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 edit, but I'm not sure if the ROM I'm using already has a tether bypass installed in it, or if the "tether_dun_required" fix did the trick. Either way, you have your answer You can go over the 2.5GB limit

No, the mistake was in my number...... ithe hotspot limit for the unlimited is 4.5gb not 2.5gb. Therefore, you never really went over your limit. you can't go passed it for now. Some people claim switching user agent on their desktop works, but i'm not sure about that. and even if that trick works, it's a horrible way to browse the internet cause you're browsing in mobile web mobile on your desktop, it's not an enjoyable browsing experience, i've tried it.

No, no... this is incorrect. The unlimited data plan comes with 2.5GB of data NOT 4.5GB. I just pulled the image below from T-Mobile's site. I should I know, I am on this plan
Please note, it says "includes up to 2.5GB of Mobile Smartphone Mobile Hotspot"

Lastly, again you CAN go over the 2.5GB data if you edit the "tether_dun_required" value to 0. Again, please see my screenshot below which shows I've used 5.36GB of HotSpot data. You don't have to switch agents or any of that nonsense in Chrome. Quite frankly that just sounds like a waste of time :-/
See, you can go over the allowed limit

Yea right after I typed this, I looked at the mobile website and its 2.5gb.
Anyway if you go over the limit , would they charge you? Have T-Mobile charged you extra?
Also do that trick work for WiFi hotspot or only USB tethering?

No, T-Mobile cannot charge you overage. They only make you see that upsell page once you reach your limit (hence the reason why so many people try to bypass it.)
The trick works for WiFi hotspot. I don't use the USB tethering (I don't like to deal with cables :silly: )
They don't charge an overage. Eventually they'll keep an eye on you can throttle you when you reach your limit. Enjoy your freedom for now.
Also their AI or whatever detects throttle is smarter now, it use to be possible to modify a system file to disable throttle.

I'm seeing some people get away with 20GB/month. Over on the T-Mobile Note 3 forum of the XDA site, people are posting their data usage and getting around it just fine :-/
I guess we'll see. So far I have not been throttled for my hotspot.
They can't throttle me for my mobile data usage. T-Mobile doesn't do that anymore on the new plans if you have unlimited 4G plan.

I don't think it's so much as a "Note 3 users found a way around it" I think it's just the settings.db file you have to edit. However, from what I've been reading online, I think Nexus owners are having issues. My guess is that with an OS update, T-Mobile blocked it. That's all I can think of.
Can anyone confirm that the SQLite mod works? I'm running CM11 and want to know if I need this. I used the sqlite mod on my droid X and my RAZR but now I have a Nexus 4 and just want to know of it works.

It did not work for me. I found the guide online and I followed it to the T. The guide I believe is for Nexus though :-/
I rebooted the phone and opened the file after I edited it and confirmed the changes stuck, they did, but I would still get the upgrade notice. I even created a new APN and still nothing. I must have tried for like 2-3 days and never could get the SQLite trick to work.

Well if you had already hit your limit before trying it, T-Mobile doesn't NEED any new information to tell them you've hit your tethering cap. They already know. I dunno I guess I'd try it at the start of your billing cycle to see how it is
nice find:good:
It may be old new for some(couple of months) but most will still find it very interesting
how Google collects(steals..) your data from your device. Some Dev's have already added some attention to this on there rom's.(not all)
But then again, most inflictions come from apps you install and the privileges they come with.
It's all a bigger picture. 1 app, one question. 20 apps, 20 questions.
For instance; the facebook app uses an great deal of privileges you probably are not aware of and don't want to give for what you use it for. facebook may be respectable, but that depends on your point of view.
Additionally, most of your are probably not technically inclined, have no or little experience with android and are not aware what can be done by indexing your kind. In that case, just take it into consideration.
So, read it and weep <here>
Please, if you have something interesting to add concerning privacy on custom rom's, share it here.
If you don't care about your or anyone else's privacy or the fact you may be manipulated in the long run, then please don't rant or insult. Conspiracies do exist!
We just need an clean rom.
ps;
Motorola owned now by Lenovo, so stuff may change.
And everybody wants to work for Google, don't they?
This is not a rant, just an observation.
I's amazing how aggressively Google is going about not letting users have the options they need to protect there privacy.
If you are an first time user(like all those now in India), then they force you to upload all your contacts and information to there servers. No option to opt-out what so ever.
Try to set up your google account, and it immediately starts sending all info to there servers. No opt-out.
Just try to just sync your mail automatically, wont work in KK. Is all data or nothing.
Copy your contact to your own SIM, they won't let you. What's that all about.
Well, that's why the moto g, which obviously is an very good devices, is so 'cheap'. They steal private data and make you think you made the choice. Most didn't make the choice, some think it doesn't matter others 'have nothing to hide'. All just don't see it.
You probably just bought an new phone, hardware with android(Which still is considered opensource.) on.
That's an honest action.
In reality they made it so difficult not to use there services, that there really isn't any other option for most users. And surely not now they changed and closed the system even more with the KK lure on budget devices.
Most new user need to be made aware of privacy. Most notably younger people. By the time they find out about it, there life is already splattered all over the net. Don't use it, they say. Wel try to keep an user away from facebook for a month.
That is the reality these company's play with. And no, it doesn't have to be this way. We just need to fix the apps to add more privacy options.
It's not evolution. It's derailment, just an other road.

Well I could just sync emails with out contacts.. I never used a sim card before 2013 so I had no contacts on it. You can use the device without Google services just unchecked allow unknown sources download different appstores... Get apks from other places. And I am 100% sure your data isn't stolen.. We just choose to ignore the TOS and move on because who has time to read when there is facebooking to do? I bought the moto g over a lumina 521 because I am indoctrinated in Google's bubble. Now that screen is busted think I am going to go to a blackberry or windows phone or iPhone anything else? Nope going to buy a moto x unlock the boot loader, add a custom recovery and root that bad lad and life moves on..if security becomes a real issue I will be sure to complied android from source and strip out the Google stuff..but I am not worried about it.

EVERY android phone that's bundled with Google apps does this, not just the moto g. Even the expensive galaxy s 5 and the htc one.
Nobody is forcing you to sign into your Google account or even make one. You can even install cyanogemod without these tracking apps and alternative app stores like f-droid.
I'd argue that android is actually one of the best mobile OS for privacy, simply because it is open source and you can choose what you want to install. Try doing that on a windows phone or iPhone. Both those operating systems are closed source and could be doing much worse than you claim the moto g is.
You also claim google gives you no option to choose what to upload to their servers, you're wrong about that too. You can actually choose what to sync to your google account. Just go to settings->google. Don't want your contacts synced? No problem, just uncheck it.

Maybe you don't understand the psychology about this tactic. But that's ok.
Anyway, the XT1033 I got doesn't offer an check boxes in the account section. XT1033 is the Asia version.
Those check boxes are, normally, standard available on Android. Also in KK, as is the possibility
to edit and store contacts to sim. Which is also not available on the moto g. Instead, they go strait to the
google servers if you make an account, which you need for the play store.
Yes, you can install and custom rom. If you have the knowhow or want to learn. But chances are you will
configure your phone right out of the box first. And you may forget that custom rom's void warranty.
Which is off course a good thing for the manufacturer. So, most don't do it, or don't want it.

Are you sure the check boxes aren't there? You have to touch your email after you go to Google account, so its actually settings->google>your email address.
Why does editing and storing contacts on the sim even matter? The year is 2014, you have a smartphone. You don't need a sim card to store contacts. you can store them on your phones storage without syncing them to Google servers. But if you insist on using the sim card, there are 3rd party apps you can download just for that purpose. That's the beauty of android.
Honestly it sounds to me like you're just uninformed from reading one old article.

It takes some work to maintain privacy online these days, be it on Android or anywhere else. Caring about that and not knowing, for example, how to install a custom Android ROM, simply doesn't go together. However, there's differences in what data is collected and how it's used. I don't mind giving data to Google because, well, it's a trade-off. I like their services.
Still, not offering to opt-out of it is simple bullying and a -1 for Google in this case.
This is the reason I am looking forward to install Cyanogenmod!
Im asian, using the XT1033 n the tick box is here to choose what u want to share..
Removing the motorola Blur service with some apk manager does the job for me, no trace to be found on my device. This doesn't mean that Google doesn't send some data anyways btw!
No moto blur service on mine, but lot's of other stuff is poking around. All pieces of the puzzel, I guess.

For those who don't know, the MAC address/number is hard-coded in the hardware of your phone.
There is no legitimate reason why this number should change after an software update has been applied.
Can anyone confirm that using this(or other) rom has not changed the MAC on his/her phone?
Other fine addition to data stealing.
Look for the folder: .faceRectImg (yes, hidden folder)
edit: some may say you or anyone made these with an contact manager. I can tell you
without any doubt that is not the case. These are made with face recognition software from
pictures on your drive or from other locations. You may or may not have this folder, but at
one point you will have.
Please don't whine about the nsa doing there work. Android phone are global, and there are other laws and habits in other country's. And no body really likes an spy.(except may be 007..)

It took Sunshine team a FULL year to find the first Droid Turbo bootloader unlock exploit... and they were actively looking. After that (November 2015), they said they were no longer actively looking.
So, this is a surprise. 9-10 months to find the 2nd exploit.
That's some great news
Added great news:
Once Sunshine pushes this new update, Verizon will be motivated to push one more "security" update for the Droid Turbo. I mean, they can't be bothered to update to Marshmallow, but for this, you'll get a new update...
People will still procrastinate and complain it should be free.
And they'll rush to take the next Verizon OTA "security" update.

and here I was thinking my jesus free cracked screen replacement phone was going to remain pristine and sin free.

No. You need something like Adaway, which Google banned from the Play store. You can still get it on XDA, however.
It uses a blacklist of host files at the system level, as well as enabling a fake web server on your phone to direct ad requests to a non-existent location. Apps see the ad requests being filled (but no ads appear) and still work.
EDIT: didn't know about this AdGuard below. It has a root and a non-root method.

I use adguard on SU4TL-49, and it blocks just about every ad except the ads in the YouTube app.

Well, you still need root -- unless you plan to run through their VPN mode. I do commend them for offering a non-root method, if that's what people want. I had never heard of this app/service, whatever it is. But then I will never own a phone I can't root. Rooting is just becoming "administrator". It's MY phone.
— Adguard is able to block ALL kinds of ads, not only in browsers but also in games and apps!
How does Adguard protection work?
Adguard filters your browser’s traffic by blocking requests to phishing and malicious websites and removing intrusive browser advertising.
Adguard can use two modes of traffic filtering.
— Local VPN mode.
— Local HTTP proxy mode.
Local VPN mode
If you are using this mode, Adguard does not need ROOT privileges to carry out filtering. At the same time, a VPN-server is located on your device, so that there is no need to pass your traffic through a remote server in order to filter it.
Local HTTP proxy mode
In this mode Adguard launches a local HTTP proxy server on your device. This mode is recommended, if you use a rooted device.
Otherwise, manual adjustment of an HTTP proxy will be needed to use this mode, the filtering in mobile networks (Edge/3G/4G) will also be impossible.

Well ... I guess I can. I'm trying it out. Still I do love the freedom to d**k around with my roms. Also when I got the new phone, it was a super pain in my butt to do a full restore of the backup I made on the rooted phone. So there's that.
Anyway, I'd probably still pay for BL unlock even with adguard working.
Also gotta remember to whitelist mms.vtext.com just like with the other blockers.
Holy crap this is some great news! I thought I was doomed to the pits of hell when I woke up one morning to see that my phone had been updated before I got a chance to unlock the bootloader.

Hey guys, new to the Turbo section as I've been rocking the Nexus 6 the past couple years.
I've wanted a Turbo since release, but the locked bootloader was a dealbreaker, and the unlockable xt1225 and/or xt1250 have been ridiculously overpriced (said the guy who paid almost $700 for Nexus 6 lol smh).
Thinking about picking up a Turbo now, and as it will most likely have SU4TL-49 preinstalled, I want to make absolutely sure I'll be able to unlock it.
Just wondering if anyone knows what the ETA is for the SU4TL-49 Sunshine update?

Great News! even i already unlock the bootloader, i really glad to hear that, Turbo & Sunshine still rocking!!
Latest sunshine is out. Go get it before Verizon sends out an "update".
So I'm new to the S7E. Only had it about a month. Luckily I didn't have to wait long for the official Android N 7.0 upgrade... Unfortunately there is no root available, which I'm not used to...all of my previous devices have always had full root with some pretty decent rom development. So a non-root device is new to me.
I'm guessing there may be others out there like myself who may have picked up a S7/S7E from people who were selling their older devices waiting for "the next big thing"... So like myself, those people are having to go thru this learning curve later in this devices life cycle. As an example, I didn't know the S7E & S7 (on tmobile g93#t) were not root able before buying this phone. And what root that was available for the MM, the guides were outdated and I never did it I decided to wait for nougat and see what happens. Anyway here we are!
I'd like to try and get some people to post some tips and suggestions for living and enjoying a no root phone especially when you're used to a rooted phone and all those goodies that come with customizing from root.
Samsung themes are ok, not amazing. Many are free and many are paid so you'll have to look around for one you like. The advantage to Samsung themes is it themes things like messages app (default), the notification pull down, the dialer, the lock screen clock. So it can give you a false sense of having a custom rom.
Surely there are more ways to customize these devices without root? Any suggestions?
I am rooted on my S7 edge. I am wishing I had Nougat but so far, am not willing to do without root.

I tried to deal with the root even after the fixes n all that but the random lag was annoying
I'm OK w/o root by using Adhell for ad blocking and EZ Package Disabler to disable the small bits of Tmobile bloat.
I purchased Package Disabler Pro but beyond disabling the T-mobile obvious, what else should I disable?
Is there a list or script I could use? 7.0 Nougat T-mobile variant (no root obviously).

Mine too. I can't get it to activate license.
package disabler is a must! I really didn't like the root on the s7 edge, it was a lot of tweaking to get the lag to go away. The last rooted device I had was my note 7 which I miss still. IMO having a rooted snap dragon s7 edge isn't really all that great. Its just a poor experience and for me, the cons outweigh the pros. I'm pretty happy with nougat and package disabler tweaks. I do miss having root but in this case it blows as I previously stated.

Am I reading this correctly that you have the Nougat engineering kernel for both the S7 and the S7 Edge, and you're demanding money before you'll release it?
I cannot fully root my S7 due to security patch. I have SU app but it does not work. Can I just flash Nougat ROM using ODIN and remove security alert and custom notification on boot? Also, any idea when, if ever, ROOT will be available for PK1 or Nougat users? Thank you.

I jist found out about disconnect pro.. (just like adhell but better ) it blocks ads in browser like chrome and withing apps itself. This was the main reason why i would root (for adway) but this work perfect without having the annoying VPN key icon on top. With this and package pro i dont really need to root. Nougat is super smooth
I actually use both Disconnect and AdHell. I find that when I turn off AdHell while Disconnect is still active I see certain ad's here and there (maybe I'm crazy? I dunno). I don't see a way to update the blacklisted stuff in either app? I guess they do their thing in the background as far as updating goes? I dunno.
I tried AdClear but the battery hit was massive (about 30%) pretty high... The adclear guys claim they've improved it but since I found Disconnect and Adhell I'm good.
Nothing work's as good as AdAway did for me- but obviously no root so that's not going to work.
The last versions of package disabler pro do work on Nougat, I've disabled a bunch of stuff (like 90 items?) but then I notice the samsung cloud stuff doesn't sync so no samsung backups... I just left everything enabled, I don't see a noticeable performance difference, I do see a little more battery drain with everything enabled though... I never took the time to figure out which service I disabled that stopped the samsung cloud sync, so I figured just leave 'em all active.
As for the guy wanting donations for the ENG kernel for Nougat, I call 100% Bull Shirt! (anybody watch the good place? LOL)... That post is enough to get you BANNED imo. It's all a joke. JusMEJOSE claimed the same thing on the Note 7 forums when the Note 7 came out. Everyone was excited to think it would have root right away and when everyone asked him to release it, he disappeared. People tried to contact him for weeks and he acted like a prick and would not even answer their messages. With that kind of record, Good luck. Only a demented person would believe that if he had it, he would release it. He lies and expects people to not remember? I think he does it for the attention. My memory is pretty good and I remember deceiving people very well. How about releasing it and then asking those who benefited to donate instead? That's what a decent person would do.
