The earpiece on my Galaxy S4 (SPH-L720) does not work, so I cannot hear calls (or any other audio that uses the earpiece). The other person on the call can hear me fine and speakerphone and headphones work. I bought the phone used, so it seems like it would be a hardware problem, except for the fact that I am able to make it work by opening HwModuleTest (dial *#0*#) and pressing the receiver button. This creates a tone through the earpiece and the problem goes away until for a while, only to come back at seemingly random intervals, or when I reboot. All this was happening with the stock firmware (4.4.2).
I then switched to CyanogenMod 11 M12 (4.4.4), because I do not like the stock OS and because I hoped it might solve this problem. Unfortunately, the problem still remains, but I now have no way to mitigate it at all because CyanogenMod does not have HwModuleTest or something similar as far as I know.
I found a few similar problems on the internet, but they were are either unresolved or the solution did not work for me. A common cause was that the phone falsely detected that headphones were plugged in, but I don't think this is the problem because I used the SoundAbout app (as recommended in one case) to force the use of the earpiece and this did not fix the problem.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem or has any ideas of you to solve it. Thanks.I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem or has any ideas of you to solve it. Thanks.

similar problem
I seem to have a similar problem. Today my speaker stopped functioning at all. The in call speaker still works and i get audio using the handsfree headphone but nothing via the main speaker . It doesn't seem to be a software issue.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
if i understood well your problem it's the hand's free problem. jam still thinks that the hands free is still inside. try putting in and out again,
there posts on this
Searched through most everywhere and found very few references to mic problems, but no solutions. My mic keeps dropping out during calls (not always, but often). If I switch to speakerphone the other end can hear me fine. It didn't do this for the first couple of weeks (month?), but then it happened 2-3 times in a row so I don't think it's a Sprint or tower issue. Now it's fairly regular.
I'm still stock, not rooted, so I may try doing a factory reset first, but this sure sounds like a hardware problem. But what confuses me is the speakerphone mic working. I thought the S4 only had one mic. If so, then it could be a software issue. Can anyone confirm it uses only one mic?
Thanks,
Greg
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this issue?
Right after the 4.3 update I can no longer hear anything out of the earpiece speaker.
Wired headsets and speakerphone work fine. But, can no longer hear the phone ringing or hear anyone on the other end.
There are a few people reporting this problem on the google products page:

I have tried rebooting and Factory Restore.
Phone has never been rooted/unlocked or modified in any way.
Thanks
Same happened to me and i also stumbled across that thread. I am using soundabout as a temporary fix and so far it has been fine. Hopefully there will be a more official fix soon.
Hello,
I have not seen a thread on this nor has Google searches helped but I have an issue I wanted to post to see if anyone else was having the issue.
I use my phone for work and often have it on speaker phone, out of no where the call goes quite and the person on the other end of the call can not hear me anymore. Upon looking at the phone the speaker phone seems to get disabled and the call goes back to the handset. This happens often when using the speakerphone but certain calls are worse then others.
In one call I had the speaker phone get disabled about 10 times which was close to every 30 seconds or so. This is very very annoying, I have also rebooted the phone. At this time I am not modded and have less then ten apps installed and I am pretty sure none of the apps I installed are causing the issue.
I will note that I do have the phone connected to bluetooth a lot and when the issue happened I tried to disable the bluetooth while on the call but the issue persisted.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
Speaker phone and Bluetooth turning off at random
I am having the exact same problem. But for me this happens with Bluetooth and speakerphone. This is getting really frustrating for me and potentially dangerous when I try to switch back to Bluetooth while driving.
Have you figured out a solution for this yet ?
There is probably an answer to this problem somewhere already but I haven't managed to find one that solves it for me so I decided to open a thread here incase someone could help me before I rip my hair off.
The problem is that my voice is completely silent in the opposite end during a phone call but when I turn on speakerphone it works perfectly fine, it also works fine when I use a headset even if it doesn't have an own microphone. So this makes me think it's more of a software than hardware problem as the microphone is obviously working?
One thing that is so weird is that when I plug in a headset without a mic, everything works as it should, then when I pull out the headset it continues to work as it should, not only on speakerphone, even if I end the call and make a new one it still works but after a while the problem is there again.
What I've tried to do to solve the problem:
Factory reset twice
Updated to latest OS
Cleaned the holes
I'm forever grateful to the one who helps me solve this.
is there an solution?
