[Q] Mic cutting out repeatedly - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Searched through most everywhere and found very few references to mic problems, but no solutions. My mic keeps dropping out during calls (not always, but often). If I switch to speakerphone the other end can hear me fine. It didn't do this for the first couple of weeks (month?), but then it happened 2-3 times in a row so I don't think it's a Sprint or tower issue. Now it's fairly regular.
I'm still stock, not rooted, so I may try doing a factory reset first, but this sure sounds like a hardware problem. But what confuses me is the speakerphone mic working. I thought the S4 only had one mic. If so, then it could be a software issue. Can anyone confirm it uses only one mic?
Thanks,
Greg

[Q] Help---people can't hear me

I had an issue with my LG G2 where people can't hear me when I call them. If I turn on speakerphone, they can usually hear me then. So I exchanged my G2 for a new one. Same problem now. About every 5th call or so, people can't hear me. It's driving me nuts. Could there be some software that's messing things up? I have google voice installed, and while most of the calls in question are GV calls, not all of them are. Just called someone now from my regular number and they couldn't hear me. Anyone have any tips or even advice on how I can tackle this?
Running latest Android updates and apps always, no root. Verizon. Calls placed from random locations (and even different states).
I am having the same issue. There are a couple of things I have tried. The most promising is to turn off Google hotword detection on every screen.
You can also try turning off the Privacy Keeper and Voice Enhancement in Call Settings. If any of this works for you, or you find and answer, let me know!

Having the same issue with 2 lines, same LG G2 phone. Called Verizon, was told it sounds like a hardware issue. I'm thinking it's something to do with their Android update personally.
Had exact same issue and took phone to repair center. They said it was mic issue. They ended up replacing the entire phone but guess what - issue is still there on new phone.

I've seen this issue on many forums and with the number of people that are having the problem, it has to be either LG flaw or a software issue. I'm trying turning off the ok google, noise cancellation, and privacy keeper. But I'm pretty sure I tried those on the last phone with the same results.
Just to make sure we're all having the same issue, you can be heard once you turn on speakerphone, correct?
Update on this: Still having the issue after disabling ok google hotword..

I read your reply some time ago but didn't answer because I had no answer.
Today the bug appeared again so I turned on speakerphone like you said. Guess what, they could then hear me!
Thanks for the tip @eepyikes, its a good workaround but lets hope for a proper solution.

Any of you with this issue also have a Pebble or other type of smart watch?
I've noticed the same problem but the issue goes away when my Pebble isn't actively paired.

-Correction- I hadn't had this issue since I disconnected my Pebble about 10 days back. It came back today when I made a call. What I noticed today is.......
When I switched to the speakerphone the person still couldn't hear me very well. Switching back to mic the problem is still there. But when I turned on my BT headset the audio was fine. Switching back to the phone mic from the BT the problem cleared up.
Did a test call initiating the call on the BT headset and had the same audio problem through BT. Switching back to the phone mic or speakerphone cleared it up.
Initiated another call on the speakerphone. Same audio problem. Switched to BT and it cleared up again. Switched back to the phone mic and it was still fine.
Seems the issue is there when initiating the call on BT, mic or speakerphone but switching from BT to the phone or phone to BT clears it up. I'm on a D801 (TMO) and first noticed this about three weeks back.
Rebooting the phone seemed to clear it up at least for the short term. I just noticed that the Google search app updated on the phone about two/three weeks back. Seems about the same time I started noticing the issue.
I had a backup of Google search 4.1.29 from back in January. Just restored that version and blocked it from updating to see if the issue comes back again.
Interesting to see this is also on the d802. Mine is the VS980.
The 13qcelp trick does not fix it. So tired of this!
Any other tricks out there??
Happened twice in one day. New record for me. Sick of people saying "hello?? Anyone there??? Hello??" until i turn speakers on. With speakers sound is horrible so really annoying! Wonder if issue will happen with AOSP/CM roms.....

G900F Incall Microphone very quiet

From the various searching Ive done this seems to be a problem effecting quite a few people. MIne was working fine although now when i make a call noone can hear what im saying. One suggestion ive read was to increase the microphone gain in the service menu.
Does anyone know how to do this as im struggling to find what to do? Or any other suggestions of what to try. I dont think the microphone is damaged as I can record fine from the phone, unless this uses the other mic?
Thanks
Andy
Found this:
If this is a known issue with fix then I apologize, but I searched for hours and couldn't find it mentioned. Since Verizon disabled engineer mode, I had to experiment, going through every app that involved sound recording/input.
When I first got my S5, phone calls were fine. Then one day, no one could hear me unless I basically yelled. The built in microphones were fine for camera/sound recording/tuner usage so I knew they were undamaged. If you are having this problem and have used headphone with your S5, this is probably what happened as I can replicate it 100% of the time.
If you are on a call using your headphones/microphone and unplug them before you end the call, the phone microphone is not properly reset and the gain stays very low.
To remedy, simply plug your earbuds with microphone back in, make a call and then end the call before you remove the headphones. The built in S5 microphone then properly resets for regular gain for phone calls.

Thanks for your reply, ive tried that although still no improvement. Really starting to annoy me now!

Speakerphone turning off at random while on call.

Hello,
I have not seen a thread on this nor has Google searches helped but I have an issue I wanted to post to see if anyone else was having the issue.
I use my phone for work and often have it on speaker phone, out of no where the call goes quite and the person on the other end of the call can not hear me anymore. Upon looking at the phone the speaker phone seems to get disabled and the call goes back to the handset. This happens often when using the speakerphone but certain calls are worse then others.
In one call I had the speaker phone get disabled about 10 times which was close to every 30 seconds or so. This is very very annoying, I have also rebooted the phone. At this time I am not modded and have less then ten apps installed and I am pretty sure none of the apps I installed are causing the issue.
I will note that I do have the phone connected to bluetooth a lot and when the issue happened I tried to disable the bluetooth while on the call but the issue persisted.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
Speaker phone and Bluetooth turning off at random
I am having the exact same problem. But for me this happens with Bluetooth and speakerphone. This is getting really frustrating for me and potentially dangerous when I try to switch back to Bluetooth while driving.
Have you figured out a solution for this yet ?

Microphone Issues on Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Ze550kl

Hello All
I bought myself an Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Ze550KL a couple of weeks back.
An overall good phone. But I am facing an irritating issue.
The phone's microphone does not work from some point onwards. Once this happens, when attending(or making) a call, the other person wont be able to hear me.
I am not sure whether its a hardware issue or a software issue. Because once I restart the phone everything is perfect once again. After maybe a couple of calls, the problem resurfaces.
I read in multiple forums of this issue (even in Zentalk) , but nobody has a clean solution. Some of the solutions were -to disable Ok Google Detection, to enable call recording, to switch to loudspeaker, to reboot the phone and so on.
Enabling loud speaker works for me. When I realize the other person cannot hear me, I switch to loud speaker and then he is able to hear me.
Did anybody come across this issue? Is it a software issue? Any help/ideas/suggestions would be nice.
I am hoping its a software bug which will be hopefully fixed in the next system update or so.
Thanks
Hmm that's an odd one I can tell you that I have call recording enabled on a ze551kl and haven't had this issue, but I'm not sure if its specific to the 550 or not. I haven't actually recorded any of my calls, it just pops up and asks me if I want to every time and I tap cancel.

Its not about recording calls.. Its about the recipient not hearing me. The microphone is what is bothering me. I doubt the issue is with the noise cancellation of microphones. Perhaps cancelling more than noise.
When I reboot the phone, everything starts working normally. After a few calls the problem returns, the recipient not hearing me!.
The temporary fix for me is switching to loud speaker. I dont know why, but the mic starts working when in loud speaker. The moment i switch it back to handson, the recipient is again not able to hear me.

I am seriously hoping it is a software bug which would be fixed in the next update or so.
I tried the hardware test which behaves differently when the problem occurs and when it is problem free.
The hardware test is perfect if i test the mic just after reboot and when everything is normal.
But once i find out that the recipient is unable to hear me (after maybe a couple of calls/days after the reboot) , i did the hardware test again and certainly was different. A buzz at all times with my voice being completely muffled. Something to do with the noise cancellation mic i believe.
I have tried disabling OK Google Detection.
I have tried enabling call recording.
I have tried reseting factory settings , clear wipe partitions etc.
I have tried enabling dialer pad tones (Dont know why this was marked as a solution in some forums)
But all of the above was not a solution for me. Switching to loudspeaker works. And rebooting the phone (which is irritating during important calls) also works.
Any help would be nice.

To OP,
This is for most of the guys. It's a software issue, dont worry, Just update to latest update. Which happened to me the same, and solved when i updated some random OTA update fix by asus. So the current version on my phone now is LRX22G.WW_user_1.15.40.639_20151029044030520_201505210103

Hi I too have this same issue. I believe it is a faulty model from Asus! I had serviced my mobile last month and the Subboard assembly has been completely changed by those people but still I face the same issue. . Hope I will throw away this bulsh**t soon. Asus not willing for replacement too I argued so many times which is just waste of time. Totally a waste of money and time.
Microphone issue
I am also having same problem once restarted phone is all fine...should i replace phone ??
Bought just 2 days back
Solution
Since you apply this solution the error has not returned to flicks: I cannot post the youtube link, but search the title: Solved: Asus Zenphone 2e mic problem by Jack Scorpion.
I have the same device with the same problem! It was neglible before, and it happened very rarely. But recently it had become worse and that thing happened to all the calls. Switching to loudspeaker works (loudspeaker mode disables the bottom mic and switches to top mic). I reset the device to factory settings (that thing wiped the internal memory too!) and since then, i haven't updated the 'ASUS Calling Screen' from the play store and everything works fine atleast till now.
hai friend try (ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser=ZE550KL (Z00L) software Image: 1.17.40.1234 for WW SKU only) this firmware from asus site or try system update form your mobile. thats old version runing firmware running on your mobile so thats a software problem. this a network issue in that old version asus team doing always best i am also have same problem in past month but my current update installed after working fine. so don worry friends

Try disabling Audio Wizard app
I am also facing same problem. Suddenly the mic of my asus fails to work.
Solution
There is solution. Please post it on another forums after you will check it.
Just hold your phone in your hand in position, which will make sound to reflect directly into your voice microphone. This way you will make a difference in signal between voice and noise cancellation microphone. That's how voice cancellation technology works. I have got this result after one week of search for any effective solution. And did not find any useful info. So I have find a solution after some experiments.
Please post it to another forums if it will solve your problem.

No in-call audio for cellular calls... BT calls work fine though

Hi all,
I've owned my S4 for a year an a half and out of nowhere started experiencing a huge issue today.
I have no audio whatsoever - earpiece or mic - when making a cellular call. I dial, and the call goes through (the other party receives the cal), but I have no audio. Even when plugging in a headset, still no audio. Incoming calls exhibit the same problem.
When connected to bluetooth, I do have audio + mic through the bluetooth device. As soon as I disable bluetooth, the issue returns.
All other apps/audio work fine - VOIP, texting, data... I can make Hangouts calls and the earpiece and microphone work.
I've rebooted the phone; that worked for a few minutes then the problem came back. I also did a battery + microSD + sim card pull, that fixed the issue for probably 30 minutes, then it returned.
I also flashed a new rom just to see if it would fix it - it didn't. Removed microSD, no fix.
I'm running Stock GPE 5.1 and have been for many months with no issues whatsoever, then this creeps up out of nowhere today. I've done some searches and other people have had the issue but I can't seem to find a definitive fix. Some report faulty SIM reader, but I have no problems otherwise with my SIM, and BT calls work so that would seem to rule that out?
Has anyone had this issue and/or fixed it?
Best,
-Dirk
OK so it appears to be hardware!
While making a test call, I took the back cover off and moved my finger around the upper area of the phone - near the SIM card slot - and applied various amounts of pressure. The in-call audio returned! However if I jostle the phone a bit, I lose audio. So some sort of connection in that area is loose or fraying or something.
Has anyone else had a similar issue? Perhaps tightening things would fix?
