I have seen threads like this in other areas of XDA.
I figured it would be good to have one, all purpose, off topic thread.
Hopefully this will keep conversations that are not directly A7 related from being immediately locked.
Keep it clean, no post whoring for post count, etc.
Mr Clown. Possibly sticky this?
Ok ill start this off has anyone seen the news that nivida will not be supporting harmony past froyo? What does that mean for the a7 a10?

I haven't heard of that in the news? Like to know more about this myself.
Heard that around here a few times, and around tech sites a few times. Nvidia seems to be difficult to get any answers out of too. There were people asking about it on their forums and it didnt seem that anyone was getting any answers as to why.
That's the kind of treatment I would expect from eLocity/compal but not from nvidia
Do you think this is due to drivers issues,
Ok new off topic just want to say congrates to dexter seem hes due to be a dad.

No, I think it was just a bad management decision on nvidia's part. I can understand that they want their guys working on the new upcoming stuff, but abandoning not only the companies that used the last generation components in their products, but the users that purchased the devices not knowing that nvidia had something like this up their sleeve ... it's pretty BS. I don't see why they can't leave a small team working with the harmony boards. I am sure they have teams on the payroll that are working on projects that are useless in comparison.

Congrats Dexter!!!
Yes, heartfelt congratulations to Dexter, who has shown such patience and good humor to so many of us in this forum.
I was just thinking about how much computing power I'm holding in my hand with this crazy almost orphan eLocity A7...when compared to my first computer bought in 1991--a tank of a 486 33mhz mail-order ZEOS with a grand total of 8 MB of RAM and a 256 MB hard drive (but it had a math co-processor!) it's hard to comprehend how far we've come. That damn thing was the fastest computer around when new and cost 3 grand(!) and I had to install a CDR drive, a sound card and I can't even remember what else. I was a wiz with config.sys and autoexec.bat and made that beast last me for 7 years by crunching the hard drive beyond all comprehension. I actually ended up giving it away to someone in 1998, who went on to use it a couple more years after that.
So when we ***** and moan about the lack of true multi-touch, sd card issues, etc...just remember where we've come from and thank Dr. Moore.
lol, my first machine was a IBM PC XT
A whopping 4.77 MHz of pure 8088 processor (pre-286) power.
UPGRADED to 256k of memory.
UPGRADED to a 20 MB hard drive.
ran the electric bill up higher than leaving the microwave on for days at a time
Hey, at least it had a hard drive! Remember when all they had were two huge floppy disk drives...if you were lucky!

Mine was a 386 cant remember the other spec, windows 3.1 damn I spent almost $800 and it was a used computer, my brother had me on his prodigy account back then, windows 95 with graphic was a pleasure to see. And my first Pentium was a 70....
There was a point when disk drives were lucky too
At one point I had a Atari computer with a cassette tape drive super low tech.
Edit: have you ever seen a 8 inch floopy? Now those things were hilarious.

there was a key stroke easter egg in the windows 95 version that brought up a picture of their developers.

Well it seems that we were all proved wrong after yesterday.
I just read this http://www.mytabletlife.com/2011/04/13/nvidia-support-older-tegra-2-tablets-all/ and it seems that nvidia will actually be continuing with support for the harmony boards. They are also saying that they want to help the open source ROM community, but in the same breath saying that they will not provide support, 3rd party drivers, or honeycomb source... So what else do they have to offer???

If they did stop, Intel with their Z brand and soon to be AMD would own the market, when Asus come out I will go with them, been buying Asus motherboard for over twenty add years love they brand, have a Eee PC and will most likely get their tablet. I still think Intel would come out ontop when Asus start to flood the tablet market..just like they netbook did..
Commodore 64 on an old 13 inch anchor crt w the twist knobs and uhf/vhf selector. nyah. make me feel old.
theres a good 4 sdks and other device roms to dig around for our ol devices ya know..
and the chipset manufacter may appreciate your end purchases in their total sales to manufacturers, they arent there to support you. theyre there to support the manufacturers embedding their chipsets. they dont have to give you answers, support or care.
..last gossip said we should see a kernel source release in a week from elocity. yeah, i'll believe it when i see it. 2 months is a pretty fair wait time from last software release tho.

the official statement from Nvidia is a bit more specific..
they will continue to support the vendors with harmony based boards, as long as they continue to release updates...nvidia will as example provide help on elocityA7 as long as the guys behind it will release updates, so if they don't, nvidia will not be able to help.
as parts of the nvidia developer kit, is protected by a NDA, the support Nvidia provides Opensource ROM developers can be limited, and only chip related..
elocity has different BT,wifi, touch and other tabs follow the same path, different hardware used for bt,wifi, touch panels... so its limited how much nvidia can provide of assistance without vendors releasing updated sources..
thats why their original "quick" statement was, to go with 3.0 alone, since most vendors now have to go 3.0, and the old ones will die quickly as they got some nasty extras like softbuttons being unused, or too low resolution for new native 3.0 apps. similar to the new sense3.0 requiring more video and resolution, and people complain because it cannot fit on old small video and resolution devices.. a pretty good explanation but no one seems to understand..
Finally picked up a Xoom yesterday. I had been through 4 Android devices over the Christmas holiday period. I really tried to like them but they had way too many shortcomings. I blame that majority of that on the hardware though. I really waffled on the Xoom and iPad2 and decided to give Android another chance. I must say that I'm impressed so far. While I don't want to speak too soon, I think I may end up finally sticking with this one. The price tag still stings a little bit though.
I'll mostly use this for reading e-books, surfing, maybe listening to a little music. I'm really drooling over the idea of getting Netflix to work so I can hook it up to my TV. Another idea I'd like to try (please chime in if you know how) is to use it as an external monitor for my camcorder. A note taking app with a decent stylus would be icing on the cake for classes. I'm still seeing mixed reviews on the styli (sp?) right now though.
Hope to finally be sticking around this fourm long term now!
Welcome! And enjoy the Xoom - It's a great device and there seems to be some movement in accessories and updates finally!
Check out studyblue.com as they have a nice flash-card style study tool designed for the android and iphone platforms. You put in your school information, classes you are taking and you can build your own study materials or download stuff already entered. Pretty slick.
I am unaware of an application to take your camcorders display and port it out through the Xoom but that would be pretty nifty.
Xoom as external monitor
If price was the issue, how come you didnt get the transformer? $200 less for just about the same hardware. not trying to start another TF vs Xoom debate, just curious

Thanks! I was impressed with the number of accessories that I've already started seeing as well. Another reason I went with the Xoom is because of where Motorola stands in the market. If they did as good a job as they did with the Droids, then I think it'll be an excellent product.

Truthfully I don't really have a strong opinon on that. Only thing I know about Asus is their motherboards. My personal opinon was that Motorola has established themselves in this particular market. I also felt that Motorola seems to be quicker to update and has a stronger customer service than Asus. Just my opinon...so everyone keep your stones at your side. Sidebar: Isn't the $400 Transformer 16GB? At least I get twice the storage.

Here is a prototype running Kal-El!

Having a prototype running proves absolutely NOTHING about when it'll come on mass market!
Ya you're absolutely jumping the gun on this one. That's not only old news but doesn't prove (or even claim) anything we don't already know.
I really don't think we'll see them until 2012. If we do see them earlier, great. I want Tegra 3 AND Android 4.0 though. So unless the late 2011 ones have Ice Cream Sandwich, I'll still hold off. I don't trust any manufacturer enough to let them promise me an ICS upgrade. Maybe Motorola since they're all buddy buddy with Google.

We wont have Android 4.0 for a while. The next version is supposed to be 2.4.

its a real shame that tegra2 is out there now and there really arent so many apps/games for it .. and now they are prepping to get another cpu out ...
it kinda makes fell sorry for buying this tablet.
The same happens with all computer hardware. If you wait until the next great thing to come out, you'll never buy anything.

I'll probably be selling the A500's in Mexico once the Kal-El models come out. I'll be able to sell it for about what they sell for now in the US. I'll make money and it'll be cheaper than if they bought them new here. Win-Win.
I'll have a "Looking To Buy" post in the general discussion, just keep an eye open for it around the turn of the year or when Tegra 3 tabs are available(in stores, not vaporware)
im waiting for Samsung to release a tegra 3 myself. Their tablets are expensive, but they actually support their hardware *demonic glance in Acers direction* and it actually works *laughs at motorolas non functioning micro SD port* and doesn't have so many hardware issues (read: transformer light bleed issues and failing docks)

I may go that route myself, Samsung generally makes good products. Quality near Sony's without the megalomaniacal "make our own standards" in every package. It really sucks the patent crap between Apple and these devices. I'm really hoping that existing patent laws get annihilated soon, but considering politicians are all on the dole I don't see it happening.

Ibwouldnt worry too much about patents, no one ever goes anywhere with them. As soon as one company thinks they have the other pinned, something new comes up.

Ugh darn PayPal issues. Okay I'm reserving mine on Monday. Does anyone know "about" when I'd receive mine? Sucks that I missed the Feb 4th deal.
I am one of the original backers as well and I'm extremely excited! Dedicated system for emulators, indie games, media, all in a small cheap package. I mean I could hookup my phone/laptop to the tv and find some bluetooth controller but this is more convenient. One could also argue I could buy a more powerful HTPC, I could, but I bought an Ouya. :3
i am a backer too and i agree i could have gone with other things but this is cheap small easy to use and setup and take anywhere. and most of all its a leap in gaming for those that want light games and entertainment. i plan on taking mine to my friends house all the time, or modding my motorola lapdock to use this on the go anywhere. i have lots of ideas and plans for mine.
yeah i also backed the ouya and im excited for it. i didnt want the "special edition" one because i didnt like the colour. i also got 2 controllers for it
I backed it with $99 on Day 1. THen rebacked it for $130 when they offered the bronze one.
I discourage Ouya.
It's bound to be an utter failure.
E: Only die-hard Android nerds will buy it.
The argument "we want to get people back to television" is horribly biased and makes me laugh like a damn choker.
There is plenty of consoles out there today, yet no consumer seems to give much of a damn about "openness" of the console.
Of course they don't. They want games, not source code, GPIO and extensive customization possibilities.
E2: I never backed next-gen consoles. They break the purpose and meaning of the word "console".
well i didn't think much about it until i logged in here the other day and it was as the top of the forum... now kinda wishing i had of... oh well

I'm not a die-hard Android nerd, nor much of a hacker yet I backed it.
The OUYA will be great as a media center to access all sorts of digital content on a TV as well as acting as a gaming console for less hard core gaming. I currently use a ROKU to access Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc and will replace that with this. Console gaming is far down the list of reasons I wanted the OUYA, but I am excited to see what might come out once it releases.
I'm a day one (maybe two) backer. I'm neither all excited or doom and gloom on it either.
The reason I did it, it looked interesting. Two, I'm hoping maybe it or something similar will catch on and give an alternative to the major consoles--Playstation, xbox, nintendo--or PC (can be expensive to keep hardware up to date. Three, the market can use something like this so the independent guy or small company can have a low entry point into getting into the gaming market beyond the mobile device There are a lot of people with good ideas, but don't have the financial resources to try the idea. Last, it was only $100, so the cost was quite minimal.
There are some good games on the mobile platform. Some that could be fun on the TV such as Shadowrun. I think developers could make something even better if the platform could support it.
I'm not saying I expect the graphics to up with the 360, PS3 or next versions of these. But as the Wii showed, if you have a fun game to play, people are willing to play with lower graphics.
Plus, I think it will be interesting to see what other people, such as the XDA community, will be able to do with it as well since it's suppose to be open. Another bonus will be able to use the other media services on Android such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Plex, Crackle, MLB, NHL, NBA, and so forth. This is assuming side loading APKs should be relatively easy and the APK plays nice. It won't replace a HTPC, but maybe a set top box.
Have one shipping soon to my place! Can't wait.
Mine will be here before end of April. Can't wait!
I backed Ouya during its kick starter campaign. Looking forward to my kick starter limited edition with my user name stamped on it and its 2 controller

That could be a pretty valid use, but there's bunch of good set-top boxes out there. Cheaper than Ouya too.

+1 for ouya
Actually i want to raise a $99 on their kickstarter campaign, but i was too late to have a pledge on their site. But defnitely give it a try when it is out in our market since this doesnt make a hole in our pocket
I backed this when it was on Kickstarter. I have a hard time accepting prophecy from someone who didn't pick up any recent consoles because you're out of touch with the direction of gaming. This isn't an insult and I totally get your response but you're missing out on the evolution of games and gaming.
For 99 bucks, I'm willing to risk it to see how it turns out. You can say "I told you so" and it will only sting up to 99 dollars worth of pain.
What I don't like is that they plan on releasing a new console every year and at 99 bucks a pop, it's still cheaper to pick up the current/next gen console.
Yep I backed it. Least its paid for. Also grabbed a 2nd controller. Just waiting on them to ship out. =)
Only thing that annoyed me on Kickstarter... didnt know this till LATER.. Is that we KS people.. didnt get a discount on the Ouya.. its the same as "preorder" price for everyone else.. which does make me feel lil cheated.. We backed the project, but didnt get any perks for the normal order.

See that's the thing people keep comparing is the new consoles that are still months away yes I do think it might hurt sells if the consoles were releasing next week but there not and as far as ouya it was a Tegra 3 device with not that great of specs the sheiks on the other had is a tegra 4 way more powerful and most of all the three of those are consoles if you wanna call ouya a console not so portable don't think you can play ps4 or ouya or Xbox one anywhere you want I respect your thoughts I just wished people would stop bashing sheild and comparing it to consoles when its on a whole other level and from what I heard most all orders are filled up for shipping so they must be doing something with the sales I mean come on as I said these consoles I can preorder in December if I want one bad enough I'd be dumb to waste money this early in not to meantion most times a system first releases it has major problems do we need to look back on the first 360 and ps3 so I will wait until the bugs and flaws are sorted out first Sony I love Sony but just as Microsoft they are just trying put them out quick enough to make money look how crappy the 360 was put together with xclamps on the middle of the mother board with no screws to support the middle of the board thereforth it cause it to warp and break the solder joints lose over time am just saying preorder what you will people but am holding off first nvidia has always been good at working there problems out before release hence why the sheild is releasing when it is instead of June because they seen something that didn't work right and people bash nvidia for making a problem and pushing the date instead of just releasing a broken pieace of hardware if some people just took the time to think about these sort of things it would click in there head anyways this was not made to hate on anyone everyone has there own thoughts on what they wanna do I just know were my mind sets

sorry dude, didn't explain that quit well , my bad, but i mean people's budgets , i'm not comparing them them at all, they are very different platforms. the main stream next gen consoles is going to take the "gamer" costumers away, and the new n7 is going to take the "geek" costumer away, which is the two big groups of costumers that the shield is aiming for, and ouya just keep the general costumers out of this. that's why i said it's bad timing
nexus 7

While the nexus 7 is a great device it still doesn't compare to tegra 4 its only a snapdragon 600 I mean don't get me wrong the 600 is a amazing chip. But I think the tegra hits home with its 72 core gpu I love nexus I've had a nexus 7 for many years but again the nexus is more just tablet and sheild is more handheld gaming. I am not fighting with ya man trust me I don't wanna sound like some immature kid on here you make good points. I guess we will have to see what happens with it the way to ywo nvidia reps acted as if this project is already a big thing so I hope it is thank you for your honest feedback man be sure to keep up on my post I will be covering more phones tablets etc..
I'm actually trying to protect you from trolls, but whatever I guess.
