Finally got one! - Xoom General

Finally picked up a Xoom yesterday. I had been through 4 Android devices over the Christmas holiday period. I really tried to like them but they had way too many shortcomings. I blame that majority of that on the hardware though. I really waffled on the Xoom and iPad2 and decided to give Android another chance. I must say that I'm impressed so far. While I don't want to speak too soon, I think I may end up finally sticking with this one. The price tag still stings a little bit though.
I'll mostly use this for reading e-books, surfing, maybe listening to a little music. I'm really drooling over the idea of getting Netflix to work so I can hook it up to my TV. Another idea I'd like to try (please chime in if you know how) is to use it as an external monitor for my camcorder. A note taking app with a decent stylus would be icing on the cake for classes. I'm still seeing mixed reviews on the styli (sp?) right now though.
Hope to finally be sticking around this fourm long term now!

Welcome! And enjoy the Xoom - It's a great device and there seems to be some movement in accessories and updates finally!

Check out studyblue.com as they have a nice flash-card style study tool designed for the android and iphone platforms. You put in your school information, classes you are taking and you can build your own study materials or download stuff already entered. Pretty slick.
I am unaware of an application to take your camcorders display and port it out through the Xoom but that would be pretty nifty.

Xoom as external monitor

If price was the issue, how come you didnt get the transformer? $200 less for just about the same hardware. not trying to start another TF vs Xoom debate, just curious

Thanks! I was impressed with the number of accessories that I've already started seeing as well. Another reason I went with the Xoom is because of where Motorola stands in the market. If they did as good a job as they did with the Droids, then I think it'll be an excellent product.

I read that thread yesterday and didn't find anything useful in it. I'll keep digging. I'm sure there is a way to do this.

Truthfully I don't really have a strong opinon on that. Only thing I know about Asus is their motherboards. My personal opinon was that Motorola has established themselves in this particular market. I also felt that Motorola seems to be quicker to update and has a stronger customer service than Asus. Just my opinon...so everyone keep your stones at your side. Sidebar: Isn't the $400 Transformer 16GB? At least I get twice the storage.

Thanks, I'll look into that.
I do a lot of filming for high school sports and it would be nice to have a little larger display than 3.5" to follow the ball.

Buyer`s remorse, post here!!

Stop complaining about buying an incomplete device in other sections and post them here. Getting tired of unhelpful info being thrown around on XDA.
Edit
I love my xoom and would never return it, just getting tired of stupid post and tools with no experience lol.
My only remorse is that I didn't buy it on the first day of release.

I am still on the fence. Just got mine a couple of days ago. I have had a handful of problems with apps FC'ing. What I think is really dumb is the case that Staples sells puts the power plug on the bottom so you cant use the Xoom propped up and have it plugged in at the same time.
I am also not convinced yet that I am a good candidate for a tablet. I create a lot of content but don't consume a lot of content. I still have to grab my laptop to do photo editing, faster text editing, video chatting (other than the GTalk app). I don't think a lot of my issues are specific to the Xoom or more Android 3.0 compatibility issues.
I think the vast majority of problems will be sorted out soon but I am not sure I need to pay full price to be an early adopter yet.

Yes, but then the holes for the camera arent in the right place, plus the case is just weak, doesnt hold well and the Xoom slides down and turns the volume down. The case is just a bad design.

Love mine, don't plan on selling it anytime soon. And once Honeycomb matures, this thing will be a beast!
I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!
I think I am going to go for my money back, and possibly buy the 16gb version when it comes out to save a few bucks.
I am tempted to get an iPad2, which makes me feel like an asshole but all the good apps are on there now. However I am learning java and will hopefully have time to write some apps soon, thereby making an empty app store more of a positive than negative.
Before anyone flames me for thinking of getting an ipad, its just cause I feel like its the one form factor device where I might not care as much if its locked down (of course I will jailbreak it on day one if I get it, and will be dual-booting android on it sometime after the ASOP comes out, google...)
If all I want to do with this device is read/watch/consume content, and ipad has all the content right now, it kinda makes sense. And I am confident the ipad2 could be an awesome honeycomb device. With the amount of sales it has had there should be enough interest in that as a project. Enough to give the google all the more reason to hold off on releasing the source code. Dammit..

Nobody will flame you. Its personal preference. Some ppl like changing devices to fit there pref and some choose to use their device as just consuming data. Don't worry. This device will eventually run stable. We just have to wait.
Do you know me? What should you care if I flame you? The only time I would care if you buy an I pad would be if you bought it with MY money.

I don't know if I got a better xoom than most if the people here but I am freaking loving this thing. The screen is beautiful, the white's are actually white, something I have not seen on anything except the Apple devices. I get no lag whatsoever on my home screens after oc'ing to 1.5 governor set at interactive, and the stereo speakers are really nice. I absolutely love this thing. I got a sweet car dock from a dealer in the UK so I can use it as a bad ass head unit in my car, and when its hooked up to my system with great speakers and 2 12's in the trunk it sounds as good or better than my gf's iPhone 5, something I have never found with any other android device, even my inspire with srs sound. Yes, it has some bugs but for what I need it to do it does it wonderful. I am using it as a complete laptop replacement. I am actually thinking of selling my macbook pro. And I think we are not gonna get many people posting here about their gripes with the device because...
1. They want to start their own post for attention/tolling
2. They don't use the search button
3. There is far to much effort for them to actually read through a forum for the appropriate place to post

LMAO, i hate me some trolls, im made this post hoping it would attract them all but i guess i was wrong lol. stupid people. guess they never used a forum before.
I regret buying the Xoom because I should have waited for a tablet that is thinner, lighter, better screen, working micro sd slot, working 4G and has a pen input, a nornal micro usb that is rechargeable, and most importantly can play high profile .mkv 1080p without needing to do any conversion.
How come no company can do it right?
My biggest question is:
How come no European country make any tablets?
If Germany and Italy can create Mercedes, BMW, Farrari and Lamborghini, they can certainly make a measly sub $1,000 tech device.
keep on waiting. wait on, while we enjoy out Xoom. the best thing invented since the internet. Xoom, Xoom, Xoom...
May I offer these words of encouragement to anyone who has bought a Xoom but who hasn't been involved with Android and modded ROMS before?
The out of the box is not overly impressive when compared, as it inevitaly will be, with the iPad. It is disconcerting to have Forced Closes on a device costing what it does as regularly as one does. And there is not much eye-candy included either.
However, the hardware specs are so good that I have little doubt that the Xoom will be the equivalent of the HTC HD2 (which if you don't know started as a Windows Mobile 6 phone, got Froyo and then Gingerbread and now dual boots into Android or Windows Phone 7!) once the developers get their hands on the source code.
Hang onto your Xoom and you will see in the weeks to come that it will get better and better and, instead of having a gadget which is all shiny and cool for the first week and then becomes old news, you will have a gadget that keeps improving as each new ROM is released.

To Xoom or not to Xoom

Hi guys my wife just got me a Wifi Xoom from Costco for my birthday. I want to see how everybody feels about their Xoom and if I should return it and wait for a newer tablet. I already have a rooted Evo 4g so I don't need the 3g version of the Xoom.
I'd great appreciate some feedback.
Thanks

I've had my Xoom for a little over a week and think it's the best thing I've ever owned. My iPad doesn't even compare and ended up giving it to my kids. Love the form factor, great screen and Honeycomb rocks. I highly recommend keeping it if you like Android.
On the other hand, the iPad is much more "dummy proof" and much better for someone not very technical.

I think the question is, what are you planning to use the tablet for? The Xoom still has some features that are a little better than some tablets, and is also missing features compared to some others. Also if cost is a concern, you are almost guaranteed to be better off in 3-6 months since the newer series will be out by then and you'll see discounted clearance prices.
SO, tell us what you think you're going to do, and how comfortable you are in waiting, and I think we can better answer your question.

Ill mostly use it for reading and surfing the net. Also ill be doing the usually nerdy stuff by trying out new ROMs and such.
I wasn't considering an iPad, I was more curious about if the performance isn't up to par, and if I should wait for a better honeycomb tablet.
Thanks for the feedback

These questions are so stupid. It's like asking if you would prefer a blue dress or the red one with laces... C'mon dude, there is an argument on both sides on whether or not you should keep the xoom, wait for another tablet or get an ipad. At the end of the day, it depends on your personal preference, your knowledge of computers/ android os and YOU doing research. Everyone's taste is different! If you don't like the question dude then don't read it. The subject made it pretty obvious what the question was.
Back to the question: I've had the Xoom since Feb 24 and like it a lot. I use it primarily for web browsing, news reading (RSS), email and FB, and the occasional game. I had an iPad for 8 months and was sick of the iOS limitations so happily gave it up.
The only thing I don't like about the Xoom is the rear facing speakers. When watching a video on the web or doing a video chat, to hear the sound good I either have to really crank the volume up, or cup the speakers to get the sound to come forward.
Thanks for the feedback. I've been playing with it all morning. I'm still trying figure out the best way to type on it though. Browsing isn't as smooth as I would like and it is a little heavier than I would like. My kindle spoiled me there. Everything else seems work pretty well. Email, tapatalk, google reader work well on the tablet.
Still trying to find useful 'tablet' apps though.

I picked up a wifi Xoom the other day, since I decided it's a keeper it's already rooted and isn't going anywhere. I also have a Viewsonic G Tablet which is nice but doesn't hold a candle to the Xoom. The G Tablet is now for hacking and testing software that I'm developing.

Why are you reading it if you find it so stupid?
Right now its not a great deal having a xoom. For me its been kind of a dissapointment the apps support. Not even google have updated theyre own apps! they work but are not for tablet and low awful. The apps from big company names like facebook, twitter, etc havent even bother to upgrade to honeycomb. Maybe in 5 month we will find more than 20 apps for tablet (if you are from other country other than us. you cant install many honeycomb apps), but by that time xoom will be obsolete and there will be xoom 2 or whatever

That was a very thoughtful and special gift. Sounds simple enough to me - Keep it. Enjoy it. Appreciate it.
Most of all - Allow your Wife to feel good about her decision then root it and enjoy things yet to come.

You do realize that the Honeycomb/tablet interface 3.0 is a mere 9 weeks old? Apple's IOS for tablets had already been out for roughly 55 weeks and had the the advantage of using existing iphone apps from June of 2007?
I believe Android didn't come around until November of 2009.
It took Apple quite some time to deliver apps and polish the software to where it is today.
It does take time and I would think Google is prepared to put up a hell of a fight.
interesting discussion guys, I am about to decide whether to buy xoom or ipad 32GB wifi.
Simple user, prefer a stable and trouble free tablet for daily use. Occasional movie, email, light gaming and some ebook reading. Wont be experimenting much. Almost decided on xoom, any last moment advise?
I love my Xoom. My only concern is the lack of apps. I think 6 months from now it won't be an issue.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
The XOOM is waiting for one or more important software updates. The XOOM was the first HC tablet and has been out the longest. I have also yet to see these other tablets advertised (as) much. Which one will get the most app / accessory support? My bet is on the XOOM regardless of which tablet ends up being technically superior later in the year. When things don't end up working as well other tablets (even though they perhaps should) as the XOOM, I'll be mostly unaffected.
The LG G-Slate has a smaller screen and lacks a SD Card Slot. The newer Samsung Galaxy Tab lacks a built-in HDMI port. The HTC Flyer may have their Sense UI Skin on it, I personally dislike manufacturer skins. The ASUS Transformer's build quality is not as good IMO but it can be had cheaper and supports mouse usage with optional dock. The Toshiba Tablet will have a full SD Card size card slot. Rea search the differences, decide what is important to you.

Pulled the trigger last night on Xoom Wifi

I decided to pull the trigger on a Xoom last night. By pulling the trigger, I mean I happily purchased a Xoom, not that I got angry at it and shot it.
I've been eagerly anticipating purchasing an Android tablet for the primary purpose of developing apps. I've been following several devices over the past few months and narrowed my choices down to the Xoom, the Acer Iconia a500, Asus Eeepad Transformer, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
With all things being relatively equal, I whittled my choices down to the Samsung and the Xoom...Although I like Acer and have had good experience with their products (yes, even support...I am a teacher/IT specialist for a school district and always had fast turn around with repairs/replacements from Acer), I just didn't like the feel of the Acer a whole lot, combined with a small dev community in addition to (currently) locked bootloader eliminated it from the running....the Asus looks too gimmicky and plasticy/toyish to me.
The Samsung looks very nice, but I'm concerned about the potential lack of ports, backlight bleeding, slightly less responsive touch screen than the xoom.
The Xoom was the clear winner for me primarily because of 1.) a large, thriving development community, 2.) Build quality 3.) Tried and true: I have owned a motorola Droid, Droid X and am extremely happy with those products. 4.) Xoom has been out a few months and has had the chance to be thoroughly reviewed/tested/go through growing pains.
As I said earlier, I'm also a teacher, so I have my summers off...I plan on devoting my summer to Android development and I'm excited to be joining the Xoom community! I look forward to learning a lot and also contributing wherever possible.

Welcome aboard.
To my opinion tho the Acer iconia is the best looking one out of all 4. Nonetheless, the xoom might looks boring at first but its the build quality that wins everything. Its just so solid. Did you get the free portfolio case from Motorola btw? Idk if that deal is still on or not. But I have the case, its originally worth 40 dollars but its well spent money. The case adds protection and a very professional looking to the xoom.
PS: I never knew the Acer was locked down.

I just picked up the motorola Xoom yesterday sunday at the best buy exchanging the acer iconia A500. The reason was because the gps problem also the rocker switch for the volume control not working and also the voice recognition mic was not working all the time. So far so good with the motorola. By the way congratulations on the Xoom.
I'm testing the Xoom on the way to work.

As far as the Acer, I agree it looked solid but the dev community was really small over there (been following a few weeks)...and still having trouble with getting clockwork running etc...

Quite opposite... I think ACER ICONIA looks so ugly... but that is pure personal opinion and I do respect your view on Acer =)
Xoom to me looks "Bold and solid", boring maybe another word to describe it but the full metal jacket is definitely something I like, again personal opinions =)

I also picked up a Xoom this weekend. Got the Zagg screen for free with the promo Best Buy had on the website. Haven't had a chance to put it on. What day did you buy yours? I didn't see the promo and paid full price for my screen protector...BB is very good with honoring things so do you have a link or something where I could check that promo out...I'd like to get my $30 credit.
You have to buy it through bestbuy.com to get the free screen protector.. I'm sure they would refund the price of the screen protector as a price match if you asked.

As far as the Acer, I agree it looked solid but the dev community was really small over there (been following a few weeks)...and still having trouble with getting clockwork running etc...
thanks! Oh...b
y the way, testing on the way to work only if you're a passenger.

Yeah only in traffic jams... Use google maps to check traffic conditions worked great.
I unboxed the motorola Xoom in the parking lot, and install the 3.1 update worked great.

Welcome to the club!!!!! You will not be disappointed. Especially when you get 3.1 update. You just have to be a bit patient with support with regards to apps/games. My xoom has almost completely replaced my laptop which I did not think was possible and has also literally reduced my phone use to mostly wifi hotspot and txt. As for cases, I have the zoogue and think it is simply awesome. I would also suggest getting thumbkeyboard app. Happy xooming to you!!!!!

Awesome! Thanks for the tips! I was actually wondering about keying...i used swype on my phone and nook color and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread until FlexT9 was the app of the day on Amazon app store Saturday... it's hands down better than swype and although it's great on my phone and i use my nook color primarily in portrait mode when reading/replying to forums/ emails, it just isn't going to cut it on a landscape tablet... even on nook color I might give it a try... certainly looks worth the small investment.

Like many others have said, the best way to type is using thumb keyboards. They are Thumb Keyboard which is available as a beta version in apps section, and Swiftkey . And I think the thumb keyboard is better than swiftkey even though they use the same method. The swiftkey version I have is the first beta, I haven't updated so Idk what has changed. But For why swiftkey is worse:
1. The keys are much smaller
2. Prediction is, well, not finished.
And others... lol
You might like the honeycomb city theme. It makes my xoom looks like its from the future.

If you like Swype, try Slideit. *Really* like it on my Xoom. Its keyboard can be made about 66% smaller (towards the right side) with the 33% to the left useful for numbers and symbol drawing. I find the sliding on the smaller area easier in landscape mode, plus quick number entry in the draw area. Not available yet in the Amazon store, tho I've suggested it to the Slideit guys, only in the Android marketplace, but you can get a fully working 15 day demo to try it out before laying down the money. For some reason I'm all thumbs with Thumb keyboard

Wanting an A500 and need some help.

Hello everybody, I am thinking about picking up one of these tablets and wondering what everybody thinks of theirs. I know that its not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs but for the money that your saving is the Tablet itself worth it? Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!
the A500 is actually the best purchase I've made this year. It pretty much replaced my laptop as my couchside connection to the web.
Do you have the 16gb or 32?

I think the worst thing you could ever do is to go to a dedicated forum for a product you know little about and ask questions like, "...worth it?" or "... I know its[sic] not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs" and the ever popular but never informative "I am thinking about picking up one of these <insert product here>"
You really won't get much more than biased responses. The best thing you can do is go everywhere else that isn't dedicated to the product you're looking to research *with* your needs in tow and read read read what other people have to say - their issues, the ups and downs - without jumping, waving your hands around and pointing at yourself.
newegg.com, google.com, youtube.com, bestbuy.com etc etc are a good place for you to poke around and read unaided, real-world, replies and topics on issues, questions, comparisons etc.
While this is not by any means ideal for the most part, those who own a product will love it and those who don't will say it's **** - the point is, you should be trying to mitigate that bias by reading up in places that would be less likely to have biased information. Formulate your own opinion based on your needs and what you read [time and time again - which you'll only know if you read read read in a variety of different places] then come back when you have all your specific questions or concerns to get some clarity.
I've got the 16 gb version with wifi only.
I use it for 99% of the things my laptop did and I'm a power user.
Only issue I've had was with torrents.

Yes, that would be listed in "specs" located on Acer's web site, and pretty much any site that sells the A500

tTorrent is alright but speeds suck even with full version. 750 kbps compared to 1.8 mbps for the same file over the same wifi network using my laptop. Slow.

Which "other high end tabs" do you have in mind? A500 is comparable to every single one of them and actually it comes on top considering connectivity, build quality, etc. Two days ago I bought my wife an ipad2 and she spends half the time at the tablet and the other half at her laptop. I spend 90% of my free time on the tablet and 10% on my laptop. The only thing that ipad has better is the colours of the screen. The white is pretty close to the real white while on the A500 its cooler than it should be. Other than that all I'm hearing these days is "oh, I can't see the pictures on the usb memory stick, right?", "So I need to convert the videos I have to watch them, right?" and my favorite "that stupid iTunes..."
Compared to the Android tablets currently on the market, the Iconia gives more than any of them can.

Here is the #1 thing that I like about the A500: The full size USB port! It is one of the only ones that has it. You can plug in hard drives, usb drives, game controllers etc directly into the tablet. Not many others can do that.
One thing that people give grief to the A500 on is the screen. People think that just because it isn't an IPS panel then it is no good. In my opinion the screen looks great!

My recommendation is to wait a while.
Why?
1. The tablet isn't going anywhere in the next few months and will only get cheaper.
2. The "2s" will be coming early next year - Xoom 2, Transformer 2, Iconia 2? etc. not to mention a slew of other options containing newer/faster/better CPUs at possibly a similar price point hitting the market soon.
3. ICS is out and very, very soon we'll see which tablets are updated the fastest. If you wait just a while longer, you may be able to pick something up at a similar pricepoint with ICS on there initially.
At this point, there's no rush and you'll be better off waiting a bit to see if something nicer comes along. Now granted, something nicer will always come along and it never pays to KEEP waiting. But at this point the Tegra 2 is aged and I think you need to give yourself just a bit more time since you can. Archos for example just released the G9 101 and while I don't see myself buying a tablet with less than 1GB of memory, I am certain vendors will be using alternative, newer dual core chips in their versions coming out in a while. Of course that's just me. I believe in "do unto others" and this is what I would have done if I was in the market for a tablet right now, I'd wait until at least Feb/March of 2012.
That being said, don't get me wrong...I love my A500 and I would surely have recommended it in the past few months. But right now we're on the cusp of a veritable barrage of devices running newer hardware. I wouldn't recommend buying any of the Tegra 2 tablets right now.

This is excellent! It was great to how engaged the students were. Also, nice to see that they find it to be easy to use and very rugged, as we know it is. I hope this is a trend.
a teacher from the up got one thru some program, posted about it and was trying find out what stuff to get with it.
I donated a usb to pc and a hdmi cord to him.
he is legitimate, all the stuff I shipped to a school in upper Michigan (you know they have no budget).
if anyone else wants to kick in here is a link
http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=710509
one item he needed but couldn't really find anything that was sure would work, was a hdmi to vga. needs to be a externals power supply.
anyways, anything for the kids to learn on that isn't micocrap or apple sauce ...
I think using tablets in the classroom is a great idea and would love to see it spread to more school systems, especially the public school system here in NYC. Despite the initial cost it would eventually pay for itself with not having to constantly replace textbooks that are lost, damaged or just outdated.
Wow, that's awesome... Maybe an odd question, anyone know what case that is that they are using? I really like it...
Thank you for the article link. My wife is a teacher, has a Xoom and her district is in the process of converting over to Google. I bought her the Xoom because she likes mine so much. I would be nice to see more android tablets in the classroom!
I hope if this comes to schools they'd chose Android tablets they're so much better than ipads
