Being the first Honeycomb Tablet - Xoom - Worth the rush

I used to be with a lot of critics largely on why Moto has to rush such a potentially great product to the market just almost for the sake of being the "first honeycomb tablet", even with "Honeycomb" is not at that time a well tested or used OS.
And now I think I got it. Despite of all these good/bad issues around Xoom, I think this move from Moto is pretty good move.
The advantage of being in the market available earlier than the rest of the pack did make a difference. Just judging from
1. the Dev's attention (Kernels coming and 44 threads in xda dev section even before Honeycomb source code is published). Look, the Dev community are group of Tech enthusiasts who are mostly early adopters. This product carried the new OS to the market, this fact alone will draw strong attention and millions apps developer, who sees Android as future OS of the tablet market , want to get it as soon as possible so that their apps will come out much earlier to the market.
2. Peripheral accessories' manufacturers' attention: If you search in Amazon or online, many case / screen protector / charger/ dock / speaker manufacturer already use Xoom to represent almost entire 10.1 inch tablet market. They did not include "Transformer" in their product name (no offense, but really to my best knowledge, nor A500)
3. Average consumers they can't remember and tell the differences of all those specs, but they only know one name: Xoom. Anecdotally, my manager, who spends life in Finance industry and has not much idea of what is different between Ram and Harddisk etc, asked my the VERY CORRECT question" Is that a Xoom?" God bless him he did not ask "is that an iPad". ^^
This is not statistical proof but rather anecdotal ones, my friends around now all know that Xoom is a contender to iPad and LOOKS COOL &FEELS SOLID.
I guess if a Tablet is drawn in the waves of tablets launching events, the tablet can't really be remembered then. Evidence being almost bestbuy staff can't tell Acer or ASUS (by the way, this two pronounce too similar to each other)
So much for my saturday night chitchat.
Xoom is a solid piece of product with both Moto's hardware and Dev's contribution =)
It was worth it to rush to be the first Honeycomb Tablet, I think.

I was torn between this and an actual computer but Im realizing how VERY much I use my phone.. this tab does everything my evo does and does almost all of it better. Much better.
edit- some have criticized the power button placement, I really like it. It is unique and convenient.

Ditto, I almost sent mine back. God knows why but it seems to have a 'breaking in period', it was uber slow and crappy, FCs here there and eveywhere when first got it. But now it's settled down, albeit still stock, for now, I absolutely love it. :-D

I was also skeptical after the first week but I'm loving my Xoom. It sits well between my notebooks and my EVO, but I find it displaces my EVO usage more than my notebook. Just like when I picked up the HTC Hero when it launched, there are issues but nothing breaking.

I believe the Xoom will have the same impact as the original Droid. People swear by the OD and my son uses mine to this day. I asked him if he wanted a new Droid X he said he wanted something sexy looking like the OD. Go figure!

Yeah I was skeptical too, my friend said I would regret it. I haven't, I know I can trust in Google at least to make the software stable. As for some of the hardware issues or problems ( HDMI, bluetooth, etc.) I don't mind it too much, I am getting a micro HDMI cable and I would probably never use it too much, I don't use a keyboard or a mouse ( that would ruin the point of this being touch screen). Still being one of the few with a Honeycomb tablet is exciting, you get to start the future of Honeycomb. I gave some advice and some feedback for the Droid Reader Tablet Edition, and when I see the update show up on the market, I downloaded it and saw that some of the advice that I have given to the dev was implemented, which is pretty cool, considering one day thousands of millions of people will be downloading it and running it, and I will know that I have helped them in a way. Sounds stupid I guess, but still just very excited to help out with software and stuff.

i have to say that the zoom is simply awesome. I played around with all the available tablets on the market for about a month and easily settled on the zoom. I love honeycomb, even though it has a few shortcomings at the moment which should get fixed up. Once Google fixes some bugs and adds some much needed features. I've been using my laptop much less now, as well as my phone (hotspot aside). I'm not going to complain much about the limitations and bugs since I know they'll get worked out, but my one big worry is if Google decides to launch its own nexus tablet this summer as well as the speed in which mobile hardware is evolving right now. Anyhow, just my 2cents

The Xoom IMHO is worth every penny. When you tie in the amazing hardware with Honeycomb and then the amazing features provided by XDA devs, it is beyond any doubt worth it.
I use my Xoom everyday, and for the most part I have absolutely no regrets.
I might add, just consider the screw job Samsung did with the Galaxy Tab by not providing a Honeycomb update on a device that was barely 4 months old at the time in which Xoom RTM.

I was thinking of buying the iPad 2 here in Oz (I do have an iPad), then decided that I had enough of the no flash support, and to be honest, got bored playing games on it.
I bought my Xoom from the US through Amazon, when I received it, I was like a little kid in a candy store! After a few days, I got bored of it. No SDcard support, no flash, no ad-hoc wifi.....then I cam across these forums....well...let's just say, I sleep with my Xoom under my pillow now. Kidding.
I'm only a newby when it comes to Android, and you can tell, it has so much potential.

Motorola xoom , is it good?

hi everyone , ive just bought my motorola xoom mz604 , and i think its awesome because android honeycomb is really good OS, it is fast and smooth
but iam having some problems with installing apps, and i realized that most of them aren't compitable with the xoom, like the android games hawx, assassins creed and modern combat 2...
anyways i just wanted to know the adv and dis-adv of my device from an expert

Answering the question in your title, the xoom IS good... very good, in fact. Sure there are a few apps here and there that do not work, but for the most part, everything runs fine. Additionally, the new scaling option in 3.2 ensures that more apps are functional. I simply love the beauty and elegance of honeycomb, and I still find the xoom to be my preferred method to obtain the honeycomb experience. Plus, being Google's reference HC device, we get all of the updates first.

What about the Galaxy Tab displeases you and makes you want to switch to the Xoom? They are about even on features and such, with the Galaxy being slightly lighter and thinner.

I would recommend a samsung device...the xoom is a bastardized piece of hardware. Go with a device that is "popular" thus will be supported more....not the xoom

I couldn't disagree more, but to each his own...

I'm plenty happy with mine, just a wifi though and no cell network model. That, honestly, is probably the issue with slow updates just like it is for my epic: the company that runs the network it's attached to wants to manage its stuff (aka install crap and extra 'features') and is slowing down the process. Sprint is HORRIBLE with this.
As for why I chose the xoom over others - part of it was price, it was the $400 32gb wifi model off woot.com. Second was that it has actual ports on it (micro-usb, mini-hdmi, etc) and not some proprietary jack *cough*galaxytab*cough* that you need to hook up some dorky dongle to in order to get a usb port.

I'm pissed that the Xoom 3.2 update only let's you read the SD card but not write. That's ass backwards to me.
I have to root this thing to get that basic feature. I think they still haven't figured out the issue that devs figured out. Other than that I like it and apps are slowly starting to catch up.

Like most of the respondents to this thread, I have been very happy with my Xoom. I have had the chance to play about with most of its major rivals in the 10 inch space (The Transformer and the Iconia and a 7 inch Tab) and while each has pros and cons (and nearly identical tech specs), I prefer the Xoom for several reasons...
The build quality is excellent. The device feels solid and durable while also giving off a sense of luxury. Most people who have handled it have commented on how "high-end" the Xoom feels.
As a Google experience device (thanks to special ordering a US model), the Xoom has the best chance of the current crop of tablets to run Ice Cream Sandwich well in a few months.
The XDA community for the Xoom is the best developed of the current slew of tablets with many excellent developers and plenty of other users willing to help and guide you (and "gently" remind you when you are being an idiot).
I like the design of the Xoom, with the power button recessed on the gently curved back. The placement works well for me and I prefer it to having the power button on the front of the edge of the tablet.
Those are my reasons for choosing the Xoom as the first amongst equals, but as always, ymmv. I suggest you find a store with demo models of most brands and see which one feels right to you.

Fair Enough. Touchwiz might be able to be disabled when it comes out but maybe not. The xoom comes with a bit of crapware itself, dungeon defender and cordy are the ones that come to mind though there may be more.
It would not be worth the cost to me but to each his own. You could probably find a xoom owner who is fed up with Motorola enough to do a trade.

I totally agree with you. I bought mine with a $100 off coupon from staples. I initially wanted to buy the tranformer now looking back I dont regret my purchase. Love my xoom.

I had to fiddle around with the formatting in order to make it work, but I know the problem you had and eventually got around it. Try ntfs, fat, or whatever - just mess around with it in your computer until you find one that it likes. I forget offhand what made mine happy.

This is by FAR my favorite tablet!!

I've loved the concept of tablets for a long time, but two things that were always keeping me from replacing my laptop with a tablet - full sized ports and a video editor.
I've tried iPad and iPad2 - too limited
Galaxy tab (7 inch) - LOVED it, but couldn't justify keeping it anymore
Xoom - It was great, but didn't really have a use for it.
Acer Iconia - Really liked it, but again didn't do everything I wanted.
Toshiba Thrive - So far, I'm thinking I'll be able to replace my laptop. I can even hook this thing to a TV or monitor (with adapter) and use a full sized keyboard and mouse, external hard drive, game controller, whatever.
For what I do on my laptop, since I don't really develop anymore, I can do just about everything on the Thrive.
Even the movie editor, although basic, is working out for me so far..
Granted I've only had it a day and a half, but so far so good.

I played with all of the top rated tablets before I purchased my Thrive. And as far as I'm concerned, the quality and features of this tablet are among the best of all the currently available choices. But what blows me away is the total lack of interest from the xda development community. That and Thrive owners, including myself, had to literally beg for an xda forum. This is a total mystery. And they've left us no clues. Because I never have seen any negatives on this tablet, period. But what has scared away all the developers is aparently a well kept secret. I had high hopes when I first purchased my Thrive. But up until now only 1 and maybe 2 persons are qualified(?) developers, and have taken interest in the Thrive. And things are just plain dead right now, even at thriveforums.org. What a bummer! So I will probably end up selling it, even though it is a great tablet, and getting something that has more developer interest, such as the Asus Transformer. Because I like to play.
9-29 UPDATE: Rumor has it that the next Thrive update is going to make things more difficult for everyone, as Fastboot has been removed. If Toshiba does this, it will make it a lot harder for us to "play."

Man Lexus One. You should hang in there. We may not have any love from the XDA crowd, but those of us working on the Thrive are doing great things. I think you will see a lot more come along when ICS is released. This device by far is running smoother than any of the others. Tweaks I have made to the boot image for memory management has really stepped it up. Guys like to overclock to make the device run smoother, but right now, I do not think we need it. dj_steve is porting ROMs and giving you guys that like custom ROMs the ROms to play with. I am keeping those of us that like the stock feel what we need. I do not think going to the Asus will make you any happier. Development has slowed down for all the tablets. I think all are looking for ICS release and the source to go with it.

I am getting one of these soon (from the AndroidAndMe contest) and was excited about the ports and goodies and all despite the thickness. It also made me sad there is barely any development tho.

You could be right about things improving for the Thrive. However I think you are operating more on faith than on the facts. Because if things don't start picking up soon, the new quad core tablets will be popping up, and interest in Thrive development will probably diminish even more. Sorry to be so negative, but it's hard for me to have your faith right now. But I am thankful that the Thrive has got people like you and dj_steve to keep things interesting and fun. And everyone else who has helped in the area of development.

I just bought one last week when Was visiting the US (in fact am typing this on it!!) And have to say I love it. My wife bought an I pad, and I think she secretly wishes she got the thrive instead!! Love the connectivity and Android is far superior to iOS. As for the thickness, I don't even notice it now. The latest rom seems to have fixed the sleep of death issue.
And the price was great, worked out about £260, which is pretty cheap for honeycomb tablet.
All in all highly recommended!

Glad to here you like it. I enjoy mine also. At least when I can get it away from the wife. She's hooked on Angry Birds.

Every day there's something I like more about it.
Just last night I was messing with ES File Manager, mapped a drive to my windows share that has all my media and tried to launch a video (something I haven't been able to do over the network on other devices).
Boom, WMV, AVI, MP4.. all played flawlessly.
I didn't have to do anything special but download the file manager.
I'm putting my laptop on Craigslist.. this thing is officially a replacement for me.
.. let me rephrase that, for me, it is a laptop replacement.. not that it's a replacement for me.
..although if I was a tablet, my wife could push my buttons all she wanted.. haha

I've been following XDA for years, since I first bought my Samsung i760 and fell I love with it. Its a great phone that I always consider bringing back into service! Then when I jumped to HTC I found this the place to be, now I'm like wtf... how is the thrive so neglected? The potential this device has with full sized USB is insane! Why wouldn't devs take advantage of it? I feel like no one cares about the thrive, Toshiba turned around and made a tablet that all the fanboys on here ***** that the ipad doesn't have... the ipad doesn't have expandable memory, it doesn't have full sized USB or HDMI out, the web can could be better.... ppl flamed the ipad so much and Toshiba turned around and took all these ideas and put them into a tablet and granted its bigger than normal but its not overly so.
Toshiba went above and beyond making this tablet and so many people turned around and **** on it and ignored it... so now we may never get another tablet like this again. Soon we will all be told how much storage we need and be forced to upgrade when we either don't have enough or our batteries can't hold longer than a 5 minute charge...
Sigh, I'm ranting but I'm gonna start moving away from xda now I love their dev's and the projects they embark on but I can't take the forum as much anymore. Even the mods are getting on my nerves, like the post that's in the Toshiba dev thread in here... the mod says its not his job to keep a thread cleaned and organized... what crack are you ****ing smoking? If your not a dev or project manager it is your ****igng job you retard, why else are you a ****ing mod? Ive been a forum mod, IRCop, NetAdmin and if that's your attitude your just being unreasonable and I see that more and more here at xda. Kids these days are so backwards, I fear for future generations. I think I'll be spending more time over at thriveforums.org.

I wonder if people fear the Toshiba name? When I got my galaxy tab the Thrive had just come out. I had minor interest only because it was a 10" tablet. When I ditched the tab and went shopping I was struggling between the Xoom and the 10" tab. The guy showed me the Thrive. I played with it for almost half an hour. The price was right...and having reward point certificates didn't hurt either I transferred files over using my USB thumb drive which was cool. Haven't tried the HDMI yet. I've been thru a few devices and this is by far the best one.
I'm very satisfied with my Thrive.

I gave the NookColor to the kids for games, videos and Netflix after I purchased the Thrive AT100 on Saturday. Love it!!!!!!!!!!
I looked at a ton of different comparisons: Transformer, Jetstream, Galaxy Tab 10.1 & iPad2 vs. Thrive. None is a match!
From the standard SD slot, to the Full size USB & HDMI; to the great screen; nice weight and solid performance --- I'm in love!!!!!
I know the AT200 is out 'soon' so I'll upgrade then -- I have a 30 day return policy..... AT200 is a monster! Great job Toshiba! They came to the dance when they had a great product; rather be late to arrive then to be Dead-on-Arrival like so many others who came out fast with gen1 pieces of half-assed junk.

I want a tablet very badly and the OG Transformer looks very enticing

Like the thread title says, I'm looking to buy a tablet. I never really wanted one because I thought they were excessive luxury items but Amazon's Kindle Fire announcement (mostly it's $200 price tag) made me think for the first time about getting a tablet.
However, once I learned about the Fire not having a microSD port, I looked at the B&N Nook Tablet. I played with it in stores and I really liked it, but that 7" screen isn't optimal for me. I was looking for other options and came across the refurbished Transformers going for $300 on Tigerdirect. (Using my Chase credit card, I can buy it from Amazon and get 5% cashback which means I can get the Transformer for about $285)
Obviously this forum is biased, but do you guys recommend the Transformer? I'd love the Prime, but I just don't have that kind of money as a college student. Am I better off going with the newer Nook Tablet? Have you guys heard of any problems with these refurbed Transformers?

Asus refurbs have a bad name to them lately. Either way, I love my Transformer. I returned an iPad2 to buy it. My wife returned her Kindle Fire because she expected it to be more like the Transformer. Said she'd rather have no tablet, then a half a tablet.
So, my vote goes to Yes, Buy it.

I'll chime in here. I've had my Transformer since the summer and I must admit that I absolutely love it. For me it offers the ultimate in portability and choice. Whatever your desire, be it watching a movie, reading a book, updating a work document, accessing your home computer, playing a game or browsing the web, it is an ultra portable extension of your computing life. If you are already in the Android ecosystem, once you register your tablet all of your Android apps will show up on your device for download. Some things it does not do well is picture taking but who uses a tablet for taking pictures? Tethered to my Android phone, I have the internet anywhere on the go. I use it with the Swype keyboard (you have to sign up for the beta) to take notes at meetings and can nearly keep up with the spoken word. If that's not good enough at a meeting, voice record it. If you have kids, there is plethora of movies, games activities to keep them quiet in the back seat on a long ride. I rooted my tablet more because I like to tinker, but out of the box I think you will find that there is not much need to do so if you are no so inclined. The stock ROM is smooth and responsive and full of useful apps; not overly bloated with proprietary B.S. In short, what are you waiting for? Pull the trigger and you won't regret the investment; it's tons of fun and useful when needed.

I have to agree with aburgthing, it's a great tablet. I also got mine this summer to replace my Asus eeepc 1005HA which was so slow that I would rather use my Incredible instead of that slow piece of crap. I use mine constantly.
The thing is absolutely amazing because IMO it can do way more than your standard netbook, if you're a college student (like I was up until a month ago!) you'll definitely want to get the keyboard also. It's a great addition for multiple reasons: It makes typing way easier (IMO it's kind of awkward to type with your thumbs on a 10" screen), it provides you with a stand when you don't feel like holding the tablet, It gives you another 9 hour battery, it provides you with 2 usb ports which function exactly like usb ports on a pc and you get an SD card slot which supports up to (the current) 128GB. Not to mention if you install an app like syncSMS you can send text messages to friends during class with the professor being none the wiser (since the texts can be sent and received via your TF to your phone)!
It's an amazing piece of technology, I spent $600 total on mine and I don't regret it one bit.

look for some used equipment deals first. Usually you can find better deal than refurb.

OP: I love this tablet, I use it everyday for business, gaming, media, Web surfing... You get the idea.
I would but new or from a reputable source if you go used. If you plan on typing a lot then get the dock also, it really makes this tab stand out compared to the rest.
I have zero regret with this tablet, much preferred over all the other choices... Aside from the prime, but i'm waiting for the revised version.

id have to say the transformer in my opinion is the best tablet out there minus the prime when its worked out. ....laugh all you want but id be willing to bet i am over 10 ft away from my tab for less than a few minutes a day i m pretty much attached to it....and except for things tht are just impossible to do, i have completely replaced my laptop with it.im a student as well and its done everything ive needed it to do/

BTW, what did one of you mean when you said ASUS refurbs have a bad name recently?

I am very happy with the Transformer purchased mine around the time of the Touchpad big sale.Boy glad I did not get that thing,and wanted a tablet and hands down it is the best for the price.Picked up the dock at Christmas for $99 from Amazon a good deal.Check online for a good price I was lucky the price had dropped under $370 at the time.The refurbished will save you some but not that much imo save and get it new.

Absolutely love my Transformer. I would definitely buy it again if I had to. It is fast and I have not had any problems with it at all, everything works great. I think some places are even selling new ones cheaper now that the Prime is out as well, but I could be mistaken. I say go with the transformer.

just make sure the refurbed transformers are not ones with the bad light bleeding issue! thats the only issue i've had so far with my transformer...not a major problem, but can really annoy you at times

I had an ipad, ordered the Prime. Changed my shipping speed and Amazon graciously kicked me to the back of the line and i got backordered untill mid Feb so i cancelled.
So glad it happened, i grabbed a refurb OG Transformer and i love it. With the right rom and kernel it kicks my wife's laptops butt on loading webpages, and if you have seen anything on ICS it will just be that much faster. Very glad i saved the 200 bucks, power button is pretty weak though on my refurb but ill fix it if it gets too bad.

Isn't that how it always works? I was originally with Nook Color, then I traded up to a Galaxy Tab, then I traded up to a Transformer. I kept finding reasons to justify the cost.
The TF201 has some issues of its own, particularly flaky QC and poor wi-fi and GPS reception, of which the TF101 has neither but has had QC issues in the beginning (I believe they're all ironed out now).
The TF201 has a smooth, slick design, better thinner profile and weight, a better processor, better screen, better camera, overall better device but its issues are alarming and the fact that they announced the TF700T which seems like an admission of poor design for the TF201 leads me to believe you should either stick with the tried and true TF101 or at least wait until the TF700T.

Try looking on craigslist.

You should get an ipad2. Apple came out with this anti-fingerprint technology where your fingerprints are instantly dissolved the moment you touched the screen.

Gotta give props to the Xoom

I'm on my second Xoom in a year. I bought a WiFi only model, sold it and grabbed a 4G/LTE version 6 moths ago. Yes, even with all the new tablets out or on their way late last year, I still felt the Xoom was the best Android tablet available with 4G connectivity.The build quality and lack of annoyances (reboots for no reason, slow WiFi connect, bad GPS, etc) that are found on other Android tablets still make the Xoom a really nice option.
I've owned or used Acer tablets, Asus tablets, Toshiba tablets, Samsung tablets, Apple tablets, E-locity tablets and the Xoom. Hands down the Xoom is still my favorite and a year later I feel good every time I use it. I guess initially cost held consumers away from Motorola tablets, which is a shame, because outside of the loving the IPS screen on my Asus Tranformer I pick up my Xoom every time hands down because;
Build quality is better
WiFi is better
Speakers are better
GPS is better
No random reboots
I'm a Motorola fan from phones to tablets and it's a shame the Xoom hasn't commanded the respect and following I think it deserves for being solid Android tablet choice. I'm very happy with mine and hope to continue to get use for work and play out of it for a few more years before trading up.

Now that the Xoom is over a year old and the prices have come down so much, I love being able to tell people that my Xoom holds its own with newer tablets twice its price...and it does!

this.....i visit a lot of forums and people always ask whats the best tablet, and no one ever mentions the xoom. so i chime in and ask "what can your tablet do, that mines can't?". I never get an honest answer. The xoom is still one of the best tabs on the market. Even though we dont have full sd card support, or you have to root to enbale usb devices, i still dont find those things bothersome. With a 64gb card installed, why would i need to worry about deleting something from it, attaching an additional hard drive?

I have to admit that other than the Kindle Fire, there isn't an android or apple tablet I would rather have. The Kindle Fire is attractive to me because of the way you can access ALL of the Kindle library content and magazine subscriptions. I also really enjoy the Amazon Instant Video capabilities. Overall, it's just the best portable media device for people who pay for stuff
I still kinda hate my Xoom but there isn't a tablet I would rather have other than something running Windows 8. When Microsoft releases Office for Android, I will probably either keep this device forever or dump it for something lighter that runs Windows 8. I can and do get a lot done with this thing. My husband always comments that I take it everywhere and use it for everything. (I feel that I spent a lot of money on it and should expect to get a lot out of it.)

It does hold its own!
So a friend of mine recently got the "new" ipad, or ipad 3... or whatever... One day we sat down together to take some notes and he shows off his new ipad wi-fi and said:
Hey, mine's got a retina display with 1536 x 2048 screen resolution...
So I said... Well, my Xoom's got expandable storage above the 32gb on board memory, flash support in a fantastic browser, A-GPS support, Java MIDP emulator, a 2mp front facing camera, dual band wi-fi hotspot, stereo speakers, oh... and bluetooth that works with pretty much every other device out there...
So he said... well, at least mine's got a higher ppi pixel density...
I just smiled!

Yeah it is, thank you Okantomi. I squeeze everything I can get out of it. What do I do with mine? Typed & handwritten notes for class and work (plus annotated drawings FreeNote is great for that,) scan documents to PDF and sometimes use as an OCR, present PowerPoint briefings (awkward HDMI setup required but it's better than nothing.) While surveying a new event site, I use the camera to take pictures of those building evacuation diagrams, save them as PDF. I then take pictures in the venue with the camera and put those in the same PDF. Using my PDF editor, I can bookmark those pictures in the PDF with the floor plan which lets me create kind of a site familiarization document/way finding tool almost on the fly. If I had a panorama viewer and could put my own buildings on other models in the Android version of Google Earth, I could get almost everything done before I even got back to the office.
I also use AutoCAD WS when the CAD data is available and ESRI ArcView to check some of my mapping stuff (our GPS is a little coarse but it's workable.) I can't integrate CAD into a PDF on the Xoom but the point is that this device that I paid a few hundred dollars for can do almost everything my $2100 Windows 7 tablet can do. It's awesome but not almost 3-4 times the price awesome. It's a shame that they couldn't really make the XYboard a step forward. Come to think of it the Droid2 was only faster than the original Droid (which I wish I had a phone that was just like it but faster. Maybe I'll feel that way about my Xoom in a year?

Hands down the xoom is the best overall tablet I've owned. I've went through a gtab 10.1, flyer, playbook and about 3 nonames before my xoom. I just can't understand why almost no other company can't make a good tablet like Motorola can.

Motorola did a great job on the Xyboard as well. I would never own it because it's not a Google Experience Device, but a friend of mine has the DROID Xyboard 10.1 and I love using his. Motorola's customizations are minimal, Honeycomb runs smooth as butter on it, and some of the features are outstanding. Motocast is really cool, as is Dijit. The Xyboard has built-in infrared hardware that allows the tablet (using the Dijit app) to act as a universal remote control to control your TV, cable box, receiver, whatever.
Plus, let's be honest, who builds a tablet sturdier than Motorola does? Everything they build from phones to tablets to two-way radios are built like a brick ****house.

I feel the xoom is still comparable to today's tablets. I proudly use my wingray as a daily driver.
And I honestly don't understand why some people focus on size and weight so much. The Xoom is a little chubby compared to many other tablets, but it certainly isn't fat. And the xoom isn't much heavier than most other tablets either. Yet the xoom can do the same things, if not more things than the other tablets.
Now that isn't to say the xoom is a perfect tablet (it has a couple flaws), and it isn't to say all other tablets aren't as good, its just like others have said, the xoom should be recognized more today.
And performance-wise, the Xyboard may not have superseded the xoom in terms of performance, but for the people who need a tablet, it is a solid choice.

Recently when I went looking for a Tab, I had the chance to try out most of the new stuff that's out today. After mulling it over, and doing a little research, the choice was really pretty easy for me. Being a fan of GED devices, the Xoom, even though not the newest and flashiest Tab, was still my choice.
I couldn't be happier with my Xoom. I use it daily for many needs, and don't see that changing anytime soon.

I use my GED WiFi Xoom everyday and still love it a year later (got it day one). I also have a Playbook & HTC EVO VIEW 4G & use the XOOM alot more than the other 2 combined. I find myself defending the XOOM on Engadget quite frequently as the fanboys there say it's a major fail. I tell them Xoom can do anything their own Tablets can do (even Delete files/folders using SDCARDXD from Google Play) and I could not be happier. Plus unlike my other tablets the Xoom can use Ad-Hoc and connect to my Photon's Bluetooth for Internet connectivity

Until an unlockable, WAN-enabled, quad-core 10" Android tablet shows up for sale here in the States, my Xoom is my daily-driver (and will likely be my kick-around tablet even then). ICS and the custom ROMs (full disclosure: I help produce one) make this old tablet even more useful than when I got it, two days after launch day- and I own few electronic items that I can say that about.

Call me bias, Motorola the inventor of cell phone, an American company, all of my life I live in these united states of America the mother of higher learning period. Why in hell would I buy a tech gadget that was made by an inferior mind, there is a reason why all other nation send their logger heads here...again call me bias because I am, Oh yeah in anticipation of the Verizon updates I revert back to 3.2.1 HC..

Week one Xoom owner here. It's only gotten better with age and I still wouldn't trade it for any other tablet on the market.

I'm glad that your enjoying your Xoom and its treating you well.
Despite any up sides you have stated, build quality, screen and excellent battery life I have been over all a bit disappointed. I was originally very very happy when I got it but over time I have noticed there is a considerable amount of lagg constantly. Despite rooting and using EOS European 3g rom including over clock it seems to make no difference. Bit of a shame really but other than the pain in the ass lagg its a excellent tablet. Wouldn't buy one again but I'm not gutted I did either
