I just finished arranging my Xoom in its original packaging and placed it back in its Verizon bag to go back as soon as tomorrow. Unfortunately after some heated internal debating ive decided that the Xoom is not the Tablet for me.
My first experience with Android was with my beloved EVO 4G and ive since become very fond of its in and outs. I hoped i would feel the same way with the Xoom and Android in Tablet form. Unfortunately some glaring ommisions and simply blatant misguided intentions keep me from loving what is an otherwise spectacular piece of hardware.
First off, for a device that claims to be a true Ipad competitor one of the most important areas to address is MEDIA. My mom has an Ipad 3g that i purchased and set up for her and everything runs flawlessly in its limited ecosystem. The Xoom while a much more capable piece of hardware is severely lacking in its implemented media delivery system. How a tablet could even be shipped without a dedicated video player is just beyond absurd to me(im sorry GALLERY is NOT the first place anyone would look to find movies) That wouldnt even be so bad if it weren't for the fact that getting movies on your device is simple enough but watching them is a downright chore. On the Ipad most video formats arent supported, but with one simple app i was able to load any movie i wanted and play it without the hassle of Itunes compatability. Xoom on the other hand has had me spend HOURS converting and researching Video files and codecs and converters just to get a movie to play on my Xoom without the framerate of dialup porn in the 90's. Ive made great progress with this as well, but why should i have to? If i werent me and i were just your average consumer i would be completely lost and frustrated.
So right out the gate weve got a
-4G tablet with NO 4G(pending)
-Expandable Memory(Pending)
-Flash Support(Pending)
-HD Video support(De-Pending on how computer savvy you are)
But ultimately the True Nail in the coffin for me was VERIZON. I chose to go the subsidized route due to the absence of a WiFi only option. I figured i was getting the WiFI version/price plus 3G if i wanted it. But after some hard thinking i realized.... I HATE VERIZON. We have a sordid past involving a cellphone i once had( a MOTOROLA btw, first and only ive ever owned) that wound up leaving me permanently soured on that particular carrier. So the fact that i was so anxious to get a Xoom that i actually got back in bed with these guys took a couple of days to set in. But being that im an avid early adopter i decided i could not be contractually obligated to a first Gen piece of hardware for two years.
I truly believe that the Xoom has potential up the wahzoo. But i cant allow myself to be suckered into playing the waiting game like some lonely side piece waiting for their lover to drop the axe on his marriage. I think there is a place for the Xoom in my life, but only in Wifi form and @ $600 unsubsidized. Once that becomes a reality then i will likely be back for seconds. Until then ill have to swallow my $70 restocking fee but atleast ill be $580 richer and VERIZONless. isnt thats what relly matters in the end?
So... if i read that right.. Your one complaint that you didn't know about before hand was the video player. That's totally understandable.
The rest of it is just plain *****ing, you knew about all of those things BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT and you're just coming here to ***** for no reason.
Sorry I'm just so tired of these posts, everyone knows what the xoom is/isn't capable of, yet they go and pay $800 then ***** about it non stop.
Some people like to buy things, play with them for a week, and then decide to return them based on things they knew when they bought them. Then they come on forums and complain about a device they no longer own.
What kind of responses do you want, do you want us to feel sorry for you?
And let me get this straight....you payed $799 for the Xoom, and now your going to pay a $70 restocking fee. Yet an $600 WiFi only model 2 months down the road sounds good to you? What?
you are one pissed off dude

Actually no one knows that the Xoom isn't capable of playing back what everyone would consider HD media, because they sell it on this point in every commercial without feeling the need to clarify that its only in their VERY specific and unused form of 720p and 1080p that videos actually play. Everyone who asks me about the Xoom is surprised to hear that its dual core processor and eight core GPU is incapable of playing back HD h.264 in high profile, which is what everyone has. And it IS a Tegra 2 issue. I had an owner of a Notion Ink test on video that a high profile video is incapable of being played on the Notion Ink, so the claim made by multiple people here that its a lack of codecs for the Xoom seems to be false. The video is posted in the general section.
As for the other issues, yea the OP pretty much spent money on something knowing its shortcomings and is complaining about his bad decision. And how do you sign a 2 year contract with a company that you hate???

That's what I meant when I said there was one issue he didn't know about.
That's what I love about android it doesn't hold your hand and wipe your ass so to speak. Its and operating system that is full customizable. Hell you couldn't even change the wallpaper on an iPhone for years.....
The lack of video player makes sense but the fact that you can download any player out want makes up for it. Rockplayer lite can play pretty much any video you can throw at it.
SKReeettttt... hold [email protected]!!
I was merely pointing out the main points to why im choosing to return my XOOM but i just figured my post was long enough without tunring this into a miniseries. I dont expect any sympathy. I totally admit that i made a choice and in the end decided that it wasnt the right choice for me, thats all. Im allowed to change my mind arent i?. No i didnt pay 799. I payed 599(subsidized) which meant ill be on contract with Verizon for 2 years until the Ipad 4 comes out (not cool).
I did all of my homework before making this purchase. But even given that info without any solid confirmations from a number of companies until literally the 11th hour alot of it was guesswork. So i became my own guinea pig and if all it costs me is 70 bucks i think i got off easy.

After all these post it seems they have I pad experience and want to go back to the drone life

I sympathize with your frustration. Despite all the sugar coating and the feel good positive self help encouragement on this board, the reality is, that there really isn't an excuse for a device to have these shortcomings. If its not ready to be released don't release it.
I am amazed at how much crap people will put up with. $800 + tax to spend hours encoding videos -SERIOUSLY!!
Seems like every other post is some form of be patient and their will be unicorns and roses and sunshine just around the corner.
I am willing to bet you guys are all 100% right about all the fixes. Last I checked the turn-around time for new tech these days is about the time it takes to blink.
By the time the fixes are available, they will likely all be distributed in one, complete, non downloadable format called the XOOM 2.
Some of you are very defensive!
The OP knew the device had some shortcomings but wanted to give it a shot anyway. He did, and found more things he had an issue with. He doesn't want a 2year contract with VZW and decided to give us an account of why he is returning it. Get off his back.
does best buy charge a restocking fee for the xoom? if they don't i may be right behind the op in the next few days.
the having to re-encode video is killing it for me. i bought this as a media consumption device, a large part of that being videos, maybe using it with my hdtv too.
if i have to spend hours converting video, thats just a waste of time, id be better served using my samsung epic phone.
thats just sad, my freaking cell phone plays video better than the xoom.
seeing hte xoom and adam comparison video was disheartening. i have read that the tegra 2 was demoed by nvidia playing h264 1080p high profile video at 10mbit and its supposed to be able to do 720p high profile at 20mbit.
both the xoom and adam seem to be incapable of this currently, that being said, it is still POSSIBLE that this can be solved with software/codecs.
the problem is when and what if? if it does happen, when will it be? but what if it doesn't happen?
as i watch the days tick away till my deadline where the xoom is no longer returnable, im getting more and more concerned because i don't want to be stuck with an $800 device that only does half of what it advertised.
/rant
sorry a bout that, just wanted to get it off my chest too. i just don't know what to do. i see the potential in the device, but i also understand the fact that the potential may never be realized.
everyone is pissed off
Yawn.
iPad and likely iPad 2 cannot even do real multitasking and these are the things we find to complain about.
It's ok to have buyers remorse for the price, but anyone in the Android world knows that the beauty of the ecosystem is something and somebody will almost certainly come along and fix whatever problem you have.
It's a simple trade off between flexibility and the Apple dictatorship, if you want to be locked into what a system can do, be sure to buy an iPad, where if you have a problem, you are almost certainly stuck with it forever.
It an easy choice for me, I do not stress out waiting for improvements, I enjoy the continuously improvements over the lifetime of the hardware. I cannot even image being locked into the Apples 'my way or the highway' environment.
And in 5 years when Android is 70% of the market and Apple is relegated to it's sub 30% share, where it is most comfortable, there is a reason.
And last but not least, no device is perfect, and to expect that invites disappointment every time.
Not that he said he was going to iPad, but others in the thread seemed to suggest that is there solution.

Why do you assume that everyone who returns a XOOM wil immediately run out and buy an iPad. Many may just chose to wait and see what Samsung and LG and others will produce.
I have a Galaxy Tab and I chose to wait at this point. I'm not running out and buying an Apple device. This battle isn't all Apples and Oranges - or Androids and Apples......
My Nexus 1 couldn't record 720 video and FM didn't work until enterprising hackers figured out how to enable it. If I was waiting on official channels, it still wouldn't work. Just because Moto can't figure it out doesn't mean it won't eventually be done.

Agreeded. My wife and I each have a Xoom and we love it. Sure it has some short comings, but so does every device. In the end, the biggest selling point for me for the Xoom was the unlocked bootloader and the Google experience device. The software on this thing is going to be hacked and chopped up to no end. That is what most people are missing. Who cares that it wasn't 100% ready at launch...seriously. I am much happier having one to play with now rather then waiting another month or 2 or 3. Any of you saying otherwise is lying to yourself because of self inflicted buyers remorse.

I absolutely agree with you. Which is the reason my Xoom is also heading back to Best Buy. Its just not ready for prime time. Now i consider myself an early adopter and i have no problems doing so but this device is just way, way too young. Ill wait for it to mature again and purchase it later. In the mean time ill let my $800+ dollars sit in a high interest account ;-)
No one cares that you don't like it. Good bye have fun, hope you find what you are looking for elsewhere
Stop complaining about buying an incomplete device in other sections and post them here. Getting tired of unhelpful info being thrown around on XDA.
Edit
I love my xoom and would never return it, just getting tired of stupid post and tools with no experience lol.
My only remorse is that I didn't buy it on the first day of release.

I am still on the fence. Just got mine a couple of days ago. I have had a handful of problems with apps FC'ing. What I think is really dumb is the case that Staples sells puts the power plug on the bottom so you cant use the Xoom propped up and have it plugged in at the same time.
I am also not convinced yet that I am a good candidate for a tablet. I create a lot of content but don't consume a lot of content. I still have to grab my laptop to do photo editing, faster text editing, video chatting (other than the GTalk app). I don't think a lot of my issues are specific to the Xoom or more Android 3.0 compatibility issues.
I think the vast majority of problems will be sorted out soon but I am not sure I need to pay full price to be an early adopter yet.

Yes, but then the holes for the camera arent in the right place, plus the case is just weak, doesnt hold well and the Xoom slides down and turns the volume down. The case is just a bad design.

Love mine, don't plan on selling it anytime soon. And once Honeycomb matures, this thing will be a beast!
I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!
I think I am going to go for my money back, and possibly buy the 16gb version when it comes out to save a few bucks.
I am tempted to get an iPad2, which makes me feel like an asshole but all the good apps are on there now. However I am learning java and will hopefully have time to write some apps soon, thereby making an empty app store more of a positive than negative.
Before anyone flames me for thinking of getting an ipad, its just cause I feel like its the one form factor device where I might not care as much if its locked down (of course I will jailbreak it on day one if I get it, and will be dual-booting android on it sometime after the ASOP comes out, google...)
If all I want to do with this device is read/watch/consume content, and ipad has all the content right now, it kinda makes sense. And I am confident the ipad2 could be an awesome honeycomb device. With the amount of sales it has had there should be enough interest in that as a project. Enough to give the google all the more reason to hold off on releasing the source code. Dammit..

Nobody will flame you. Its personal preference. Some ppl like changing devices to fit there pref and some choose to use their device as just consuming data. Don't worry. This device will eventually run stable. We just have to wait.

I don't know if I got a better xoom than most if the people here but I am freaking loving this thing. The screen is beautiful, the white's are actually white, something I have not seen on anything except the Apple devices. I get no lag whatsoever on my home screens after oc'ing to 1.5 governor set at interactive, and the stereo speakers are really nice. I absolutely love this thing. I got a sweet car dock from a dealer in the UK so I can use it as a bad ass head unit in my car, and when its hooked up to my system with great speakers and 2 12's in the trunk it sounds as good or better than my gf's iPhone 5, something I have never found with any other android device, even my inspire with srs sound. Yes, it has some bugs but for what I need it to do it does it wonderful. I am using it as a complete laptop replacement. I am actually thinking of selling my macbook pro. And I think we are not gonna get many people posting here about their gripes with the device because...
1. They want to start their own post for attention/tolling
2. They don't use the search button
3. There is far to much effort for them to actually read through a forum for the appropriate place to post

LMAO, i hate me some trolls, im made this post hoping it would attract them all but i guess i was wrong lol. stupid people. guess they never used a forum before.
I regret buying the Xoom because I should have waited for a tablet that is thinner, lighter, better screen, working micro sd slot, working 4G and has a pen input, a nornal micro usb that is rechargeable, and most importantly can play high profile .mkv 1080p without needing to do any conversion.
How come no company can do it right?
My biggest question is:
How come no European country make any tablets?
If Germany and Italy can create Mercedes, BMW, Farrari and Lamborghini, they can certainly make a measly sub $1,000 tech device.
keep on waiting. wait on, while we enjoy out Xoom. the best thing invented since the internet. Xoom, Xoom, Xoom...
May I offer these words of encouragement to anyone who has bought a Xoom but who hasn't been involved with Android and modded ROMS before?
The out of the box is not overly impressive when compared, as it inevitaly will be, with the iPad. It is disconcerting to have Forced Closes on a device costing what it does as regularly as one does. And there is not much eye-candy included either.
However, the hardware specs are so good that I have little doubt that the Xoom will be the equivalent of the HTC HD2 (which if you don't know started as a Windows Mobile 6 phone, got Froyo and then Gingerbread and now dual boots into Android or Windows Phone 7!) once the developers get their hands on the source code.
Hang onto your Xoom and you will see in the weeks to come that it will get better and better and, instead of having a gadget which is all shiny and cool for the first week and then becomes old news, you will have a gadget that keeps improving as each new ROM is released.
I did, can't wait to get it. I'm going to have a great time with emus

Ugh darn PayPal issues. Okay I'm reserving mine on Monday. Does anyone know "about" when I'd receive mine? Sucks that I missed the Feb 4th deal.
I am one of the original backers as well and I'm extremely excited! Dedicated system for emulators, indie games, media, all in a small cheap package. I mean I could hookup my phone/laptop to the tv and find some bluetooth controller but this is more convenient. One could also argue I could buy a more powerful HTPC, I could, but I bought an Ouya. :3
i am a backer too and i agree i could have gone with other things but this is cheap small easy to use and setup and take anywhere. and most of all its a leap in gaming for those that want light games and entertainment. i plan on taking mine to my friends house all the time, or modding my motorola lapdock to use this on the go anywhere. i have lots of ideas and plans for mine.
yeah i also backed the ouya and im excited for it. i didnt want the "special edition" one because i didnt like the colour. i also got 2 controllers for it
I backed it with $99 on Day 1. THen rebacked it for $130 when they offered the bronze one.
I discourage Ouya.
It's bound to be an utter failure.
E: Only die-hard Android nerds will buy it.
The argument "we want to get people back to television" is horribly biased and makes me laugh like a damn choker.
There is plenty of consoles out there today, yet no consumer seems to give much of a damn about "openness" of the console.
Of course they don't. They want games, not source code, GPIO and extensive customization possibilities.
E2: I never backed next-gen consoles. They break the purpose and meaning of the word "console".
well i didn't think much about it until i logged in here the other day and it was as the top of the forum... now kinda wishing i had of... oh well

Of course they don't. They want games, not source code, GPIO and extensive customization possibilities.
E2: I never backed next-gen consoles. They break the purpose and meaning of the word "console".

I'm not a die-hard Android nerd, nor much of a hacker yet I backed it.
The OUYA will be great as a media center to access all sorts of digital content on a TV as well as acting as a gaming console for less hard core gaming. I currently use a ROKU to access Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc and will replace that with this. Console gaming is far down the list of reasons I wanted the OUYA, but I am excited to see what might come out once it releases.
I'm a day one (maybe two) backer. I'm neither all excited or doom and gloom on it either.
The reason I did it, it looked interesting. Two, I'm hoping maybe it or something similar will catch on and give an alternative to the major consoles--Playstation, xbox, nintendo--or PC (can be expensive to keep hardware up to date. Three, the market can use something like this so the independent guy or small company can have a low entry point into getting into the gaming market beyond the mobile device There are a lot of people with good ideas, but don't have the financial resources to try the idea. Last, it was only $100, so the cost was quite minimal.
There are some good games on the mobile platform. Some that could be fun on the TV such as Shadowrun. I think developers could make something even better if the platform could support it.
I'm not saying I expect the graphics to up with the 360, PS3 or next versions of these. But as the Wii showed, if you have a fun game to play, people are willing to play with lower graphics.
Plus, I think it will be interesting to see what other people, such as the XDA community, will be able to do with it as well since it's suppose to be open. Another bonus will be able to use the other media services on Android such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Plex, Crackle, MLB, NHL, NBA, and so forth. This is assuming side loading APKs should be relatively easy and the APK plays nice. It won't replace a HTPC, but maybe a set top box.
Have one shipping soon to my place! Can't wait.
Mine will be here before end of April. Can't wait!
I backed Ouya during its kick starter campaign. Looking forward to my kick starter limited edition with my user name stamped on it and its 2 controller

That could be a pretty valid use, but there's bunch of good set-top boxes out there. Cheaper than Ouya too.
Did Cant wait to play!
+1 for ouya
Actually i want to raise a $99 on their kickstarter campaign, but i was too late to have a pledge on their site. But defnitely give it a try when it is out in our market since this doesnt make a hole in our pocket
I backed this when it was on Kickstarter. I have a hard time accepting prophecy from someone who didn't pick up any recent consoles because you're out of touch with the direction of gaming. This isn't an insult and I totally get your response but you're missing out on the evolution of games and gaming.
For 99 bucks, I'm willing to risk it to see how it turns out. You can say "I told you so" and it will only sting up to 99 dollars worth of pain.
What I don't like is that they plan on releasing a new console every year and at 99 bucks a pop, it's still cheaper to pick up the current/next gen console.
Yep I backed it. Least its paid for. Also grabbed a 2nd controller. Just waiting on them to ship out. =)
Only thing that annoyed me on Kickstarter... didnt know this till LATER.. Is that we KS people.. didnt get a discount on the Ouya.. its the same as "preorder" price for everyone else.. which does make me feel lil cheated.. We backed the project, but didnt get any perks for the normal order.
I have been a strong advocate of the Mad Catz Mojo since release, and I still think it has the most powerful components of any Android box to date and has a LOT of potential...but I have to come to the realization that the potential is lost on this device for quite a few reasons:
1. Mad Catz does not seem to "know" the device or their end users in this area.
Exactly as I put it above. They did not know how to root their own device and needed Modaco to come forward with a root method, and thank GOD for that, as without it you would quickly discover that you cannot download a single thing from the Playstore without it. But root is usually the beginning to better things. It seems like it was the one and only mod. Root was necessary, but custom recovery and a WAY to recover this device is also necessary. You just gave the general population a way to wreck the Mojo, but no way to recover from it. Nice. Feels like this was merely released and that is all. Sort of like "here you go, figure it out". You advertise on the box that this can play your Playstore purchases, but not until rooting. You guys should be rooting these before packaging.
2. Price
I never had an issue with the price, but I know others have. For a "figure it out on your own, we will not assist" type of device, maybe the introductory price should have been $199, and then dropped to $150. I fear the price is driving away potential devs...that is the price of what you are getting. The console is great, and honestly does not need to be included with that controller. It does not have a screen like the Shield. There is no reason why the joystick cannot be omitted and the price drastically lowered...maybe down to Minix Neo X7 pricetag ($130)
3. No advertising, upselling, no dev samples..
I saw a blog my someone (I will not mention his name) in which you guys were supposed to send him a Mojo and never did. He didn't care, but was upset because you guys made a promise and backed out. You didn't even contact him again. Not good. These Mojo units should have been handed out to the dev elite to help keep this box alive. If they don't have it and are reluctant to buy it, nothing is going to come of it. Get it? Ohh, and advertising is key for products. I saw you guys talking it up pre-release in trade shows, NeweggTV, etc. Then it is released and nothing. You did make that Ouya announcement two months ago....but the light is dimming. Faster items are on the way and this device is going to be forgotten before it has a chance to be remembered.
It pains me to say it, but I have now too returned my Mojo. Not because anyone talked me into another device, but because I feel the lack of support, updates, news, development, anything at all....is the doom that is the Mojo. No way to get in and install a custom rom (or even stock rom if bricked) is just asking for trouble. What if some rogue app bricked the mojo? What are you going to tell me? Send it to Canada and wait a month for you to flash it? Or do you even know how to do that?
I ended up ordering the Minix Neo X7 (I know the X8 is coming, and will probably get that as well) not because I think it is more powerful (I know it is not) but because there is a world of active development going in for the device and a dozen ways to ensure that I never end up with a paperweight down the road. If it runs emulators/movies/music well that is all I need. I wish the Mojo was the ultimate answer (in hardware it nearly is for me) but software/development/support ends up being even MORE important than the hardware contained. It's like someone giving you an 8-Core CPU but only providing software that takes advantage of one core. Ugh.

Your phone and your attitude DOES suck. I did not change my mind about that Your stupid posts compound the issue and make the Mojo less desirable...or at least the Mojo forums. Congratulations for that. You should be given a "major award". Your posts have nothing to do with mine. You were just a crybaby because you bricked yours and they had no more in stock to replenish it for you.
As for the Mojo, I still stand my ground that it is the most powerful (currently) Android TV box on the market. That is fact, not me just saying it. It is a shame the way it has turned out however with the lack of support, no development, and a weak forum with only a handful of helpful and encouraging people and one real dipstick (hint, the post above)

I agree with zektor I biught this cuz it said was going to be rooted and was good quality but was very disappointed with the extra stuff I had to do. Not for the average person. Hes right the more people the more development from devs amd if it takes mad catz giving some free out to high level devs to make thier product better then they need to hurry up. There used to be a mad catz rep here but ive seen nothing for a while I ciuld be wrong. Maybe cause he has blno answers anymore

Strange that a week ago you wrote Reasons you SHOULD buy a M.O.J.O.. the mojo hasn't changed,Android hasn't changed, the community hasn't changed.. so what's changed? " because I feel the lack of support, updates, news, development, anything at all"
Well there was an update 2 days ago: http://madcatz.com/4k-coming-to-mojo/
Apart from that, it hasn't changed.
Obviously, it's not a cheap toy like Ouya, so yes less devs and I would agree with you: "No way to get in and install a custom rom (or even stock rom if bricked) is just asking for trouble. "
But I'm guessing, like rooting, madcatz can't do it or release the image due to legal reasons (it's android/nvidia's software) obviously it would be nice if it "leaked".. then yeah sure I too would try more risky stuff..
Price point I think it's great value and a complete package with the ctrlr... ie I don't like the amazon firetv controller, moga etc.
re Advertising etc, I think they are timing it, it's not cheap to advertise.. I'm guessing they are waiting to finish kit-kat/ouya everywhere before doing so? I don't know.. don't really care
"I wish the Mojo was the ultimate answer (in hardware it nearly is for me) but software/development/support ends up being even MORE important than the hardware contained. It's like someone giving you an 8-Core CPU but only providing software that takes advantage of one core. Ugh. "
Madcatz is a hardware vendor, TMK they don't do software... and that's one of their selling point, no vendor lock in.
It's like you bought an Dell laptop and returned it because Dell didn't put out enough patches/upgrade? :silly:
What community mods makes you think your not running on all 8 cores?
I mean you had a good set up... what exactly couldn't you do?
Anyway, I'm still optimistic and it's still early days, MOJO is future proof, it's spec's are still top of the line and will continue to be for a while yet.
I wouldn't be surprised if kitkat/ouya comes out closer to the holiday season.

Yes, it was a nice setup and yes, I still do believe there are reasons to buy the Mojo. But, it is not future proof. It is getting older by the day (the Tegra 4) and more and more devices will have the processor (or something more powerful) built in. When that happens, the Mojo will become less exclusive and less desirable. It is also not future proof because the minute you run a rogue app that requires root and it bricks it (or you brick it in any other way) the Mojo is essentially done for. Not having a way to recover from a brick is not something that is acceptable nowadays.
It's nice to see some news. The 4k support means they are doing something. Not hearing anything for almost 3 months since ouya announcement and kit Kat upgrade has made it hard to have faith in improvements, but it sounds like it may still be coming
What is future proof nowadays things are changing at a very fast pace but I'm in no rush couldn't be happier with my mojo there may be new hardware coming but its not out yet and there is nothing on the play store that this baby won't run at this time horse before the cart

I agree about not being able to unbrick it ourselves is an issue.. but it doesn't make it less future proof IMO.
Having an active community helps.. but with android/nvidia in it, we/I can 'piggy back' on other groups for info ie shield, ouya, other T4 products.
As you may or may not know, there are very few pieces of technology that have stood the test of time.
I can name a few from personal experience here:
Commodore 64
MS Windows XP
Nokia N900 & Maemo(native linux)
The mojo & CTRLR are so versatile, I'm sure I'll still be using it well after it's product lifecycle... that's future proof!

It is funny you mention the C64. Not only do I know it...I lived it I ran a BBS for many years and was a part of a demo group in the mid-late 80's for the C64. I know all well how it stood the test of time, and still own and use one (and develop on it) today. It is well documented, I can fix them, mod them (now with SD2IEC and other neat stuff) and they will essentially last as long as the hardware does.
The Mojo IS a cool system, I have never said otherwise in regard to the hardware. But I honestly cannot say that it will stand any test of time...sadly. It is a flash in the pan as compared with the likes of the other items you mentioned, *especially* the C64. It almost feels like blasphemy to put the two in the same sentence
But, Mad Catz could definitely redeem themselves if they became a little more proactive in the area in which the system's target audience resides. Namely HERE, and in other forums concerning Android TV boxes. Maybe some of there techs can get involved in conversations, provide useful tips, and check with their senior technicians regarding in depth questions that we may have. As it stands now it is a ghost town. I wonder if the Mad Catz employees read these forums and chuckle at what suckers we are for buying in. I REALLY hope that is not the case.

But you forget Zektor nothing nowadays is made to last, back in the 80 and 90 hardware was made to last 20 a 30 years, like the
Commodore 64 (and i have one with a floppy drive and a tape drive, and also had Commodore Amiga for years, still have a Amiga 2000 from
1987 and it still works.
But all the stuff that is now made is not made to last, they (the manufactures) want that you buy new hardware every view years, thats why
Android phones only get 1 a 1.5 years of updates if your lucky and then nothing, when a Samsung Galaxy S3 can run Android 4.4 KitKat easily.

I can agree with you here. We live in a throw away society unfortunately. However, there are still items that are made to last, but they are "hidden gems" more or less. The vast majority of items are made like garbage, but every once in awhile you find something that is built like a rock. My Canon Powershot S80 comes to mind...which is actually quite a few years old now. Out of the items made today (in terms of these devices) the Minix is build VERY nicely, same with the Ouya. The Mojo is of decent quality, but it still feels like a hollow piece of plastic to me for some reason.

Computer cpu's are built to last, just in the past they got outdated so fast. These days you can get a new cpu and be good for a very long time and it will outlast any other piece of computer equipment. I've actually never had a cpu go bad. But at the non component level, most consumer electronics have very short shelf life.

I don't agree, there are still companies out there that make great and out lasting products!
They add extra features that others don't, yes it's more expensive but less disposable.. like the SID chip on the C64 and the BT4/USB3,etc on the MOJO... it didn't have to be there and it's really at the manufactures risk/expense because it's their profit margin that it effects.
But it gives the company integrity for not selling out like their cheaper competitors.
I think things now are built for the lowest common denominator and only the brave step out of that.
IE: mobile phones, In Australia, it's next to impossible to buy a new mobile with a keyboard
Anyway, it's interesting
So we all know about the cracked edges issue, and you've probably also heard that even the "new batch" and the LTE model are still prone to cracking.
Yesterday I posted a petition on the geforce forum to bring attention to the issue and to demand a statement from NVIDIA regarding what their plan is to rectify the issue. Today I was shadowbanned, which means that nothing informed me that I was banned, but all my posts and threads are not visible to anyone else. So now the petition is down a black hole. I have NO IDEA why I was banned, but it was likely an attempt to erase the petition, as I didn't do anything inflammatory in the past couple days, and this is not a normal account suspension (those let you know you're temp banned). This is a shady shadowban where they don't want anyone to know that I'm banned. They just want to silently erase every post and thread I've ever made.
Here's where I need your help. Nvidia is obviously trying to sweep the continuing cracked edge saga under the rug. I would appreciate it if anyone who also frequents the nvidia community could make a new topic to start a new petition to demand a response about the cracked edges, and also to let people know what happened to me.
We shouldn't let them get away with this. Thanks.

Yes I saw that this morning. Quite disgraceful. I see they deleted your thread on Gamergate too some days ago.
If this is the way that Nvidia conducts both its Android device business and its customer support forums then it has lost me completely as a potential customer. This action is the last straw for me, my decision is made to totally avoid Nvidia, I shall delete my GeForce forum bookmarks and not visit there anymore. I do not wish to be part of that debacle any longer.
All in all it is a shabby state of affairs.
ps I have seen you over on FreakTab, I am considering PiPO as the way for me to go next.
I hear yea' man, this isn't cool.
My device burnt me and must of been near combustion, and is now finally after two months crumbling at the corners.
When speaking to support, they were LYING TO ME and just running me through a loop.
"The issue has been resolved in the new replacements"
"Uhh, I was just on YOUR forums reading the opposite... "
Like, they didn't even have to lie to me...
I would of been civil and tried to work something out.
But instead they just want to keep sending out disfunctional and DANGEROUS items and tell me it's okay now?
No, it's not. I have a daughter about to be born and I'd rather not have a fire / choking hazard around.
I sort of wanted to like use the thing to help teach my daughter things through a touch interface, but you know.
I'm scared it'll kill her.
What a freakin' shame.
And to be shadow banning is beyond corrupt now.
Do they think we're all complete idiots who can't communicate if we're blocked somewhere?
That the issue will go away?
Give me back my money and apologizing for wasting my time, lying to us.
Criminal.
Decided to go green for GPU's this year (I sell prebuilds on the side).
WELL, that was a short ride.
PS 4k Downsampling has always been possible on any modern gpu, don't let Nvidia fool you into thinking it's a 900 series feature.
Another thing you likely won't hear make the news articles.

It's funny because AFTER that I had a rep tell me that wasn't true..
I asked "Is it true you guys are giving people the upgraded version to try to make up for all of this hassle?"
"No".
"Oh, okay."
OP is too right.
I received my replacement quite a while ago, all packaged up nicely with bubbles and tampering tape. Little did I know this was the same model that I had had before. A crack appeared the week after. I had since already returned my tablet to the retailer and now have a cracked RMA'd tablet in my hands.

I really wanted this tablet to be good given it's price point and specifications but I'm not interested in the risk given all the complaints and issues. Keep it up! I'm glad the problems are noted in multiple places. I wouldn't rely on their official forums for unbiased comments anyways so keep up the conversation elsewhere where you can't be censored.
Brothers, the least you can do is go make a review on Amazon.com, which is the defacto website where I go to search up reviews before buying the product. This will save other people a lot of headaches. I already did, and you should too.
Thank God I came to XDA before pulling the trigger on one of these. No lie, I was dead set on getting one in the next 30 minutes.
I'm honestly not too surprised either.
Nvidia doesn't have a strong OEM track record either. Most of the time, if you've purchased a 'Nvidia GPU', you're purchasing a card developed by another OEM which uses Nvidia tech/chips. My understanding is that the Shield is Nvidia OEM- it's an Nvidia chip, on an Nvidia board, in an Nvidia-designed hardware unit. In the US, they only seem to sell Nvidia OEM cards at Best Buy (probably for good reason), so I've never seen Nvidia cards anywhere other than Best Buy, which admittedly, can be pretty spotty at times too.
I'm not sure where all these issues are coming from too- all mine has is weak wifi signal. When I'm in decent range of my AC/N router, the signal is great, but it degrades quickly beyond 4ft away. I've dropped this tablet all over the place, and used it for pretty heavy gaming with K1-optimized titles, and I still have no cracks after a month and a half; Can't say the same about my Nexus 7 though, which is in horrific shape.

Yes I saw that this morning. Quite disgraceful. I see they deleted your thread on Gamergate too some days ago.

What the heck does gamergate have to do with an nvidia tablet? Easy to see why that was deleted.

How very interesting.
Is that really your best response to the topic?
It is a shame such a device has the manufacturing issues. I can say from my experience that Nvidia's support is top notch. I had the screen got out after about 6 months on my Shield Portable and they sent me a new one in just a couple of days. They also RMA'ed my Shield Tablet do to cracking with no issues.
I've just ordered one of these tonight, it's being delivered in the morning. After reading about it here which I should have done first, it will be going straight back unopened.

Thank heavens! Tell your parents, coworkers and your uncle.
Don't support a product that has the company deleting forum posts and ignoring issues altogether.
If you are still interested in one, it might be worth waiting a year or two, until (if) they hit deal sites as refurbs. I bought a Nexus 7 2013 at launch, and it had all sorts of build issues, but two of my team members got refurb models from Woot recently, and both are in a lot better condition than mine was at launch. >_>
Of course the truth differs greatly from the OP's statements.
He got banned for being an obsessive-compulsive and an outright obnoxious troll, not because of some great crackpot conspiracy regarding his petition or whatever. He also got - at least some of the less offensive - posts returned along with being unbanned, but these kind of facts would just ruin a nice story.
Made up stories are made up. Simple as that. There's a few of these cases on every forum and the Shield Tablet section on Nvidia's forum isn't an exception.

It is an excellent tablet. If you have an issue they will replace it. Use the device and draw your own conclusions. Nvidia has a lot of devices out there and this is just one thread with one disgruntled customer. No company is perfect and in my case at least they have done what needed to be done for my issues.
