*SIGH* Its decided, Back you go XOOM - Xoom General

I just finished arranging my Xoom in its original packaging and placed it back in its Verizon bag to go back as soon as tomorrow. Unfortunately after some heated internal debating ive decided that the Xoom is not the Tablet for me.
My first experience with Android was with my beloved EVO 4G and ive since become very fond of its in and outs. I hoped i would feel the same way with the Xoom and Android in Tablet form. Unfortunately some glaring ommisions and simply blatant misguided intentions keep me from loving what is an otherwise spectacular piece of hardware.
First off, for a device that claims to be a true Ipad competitor one of the most important areas to address is MEDIA. My mom has an Ipad 3g that i purchased and set up for her and everything runs flawlessly in its limited ecosystem. The Xoom while a much more capable piece of hardware is severely lacking in its implemented media delivery system. How a tablet could even be shipped without a dedicated video player is just beyond absurd to me(im sorry GALLERY is NOT the first place anyone would look to find movies) That wouldnt even be so bad if it weren't for the fact that getting movies on your device is simple enough but watching them is a downright chore. On the Ipad most video formats arent supported, but with one simple app i was able to load any movie i wanted and play it without the hassle of Itunes compatability. Xoom on the other hand has had me spend HOURS converting and researching Video files and codecs and converters just to get a movie to play on my Xoom without the framerate of dialup porn in the 90's. Ive made great progress with this as well, but why should i have to? If i werent me and i were just your average consumer i would be completely lost and frustrated.
So right out the gate weve got a
-4G tablet with NO 4G(pending)
-Expandable Memory(Pending)
-Flash Support(Pending)
-HD Video support(De-Pending on how computer savvy you are)
But ultimately the True Nail in the coffin for me was VERIZON. I chose to go the subsidized route due to the absence of a WiFi only option. I figured i was getting the WiFI version/price plus 3G if i wanted it. But after some hard thinking i realized.... I HATE VERIZON. We have a sordid past involving a cellphone i once had( a MOTOROLA btw, first and only ive ever owned) that wound up leaving me permanently soured on that particular carrier. So the fact that i was so anxious to get a Xoom that i actually got back in bed with these guys took a couple of days to set in. But being that im an avid early adopter i decided i could not be contractually obligated to a first Gen piece of hardware for two years.
I truly believe that the Xoom has potential up the wahzoo. But i cant allow myself to be suckered into playing the waiting game like some lonely side piece waiting for their lover to drop the axe on his marriage. I think there is a place for the Xoom in my life, but only in Wifi form and @ $600 unsubsidized. Once that becomes a reality then i will likely be back for seconds. Until then ill have to swallow my $70 restocking fee but atleast ill be $580 richer and VERIZONless. isnt thats what relly matters in the end?

So... if i read that right.. Your one complaint that you didn't know about before hand was the video player. That's totally understandable.
The rest of it is just plain *****ing, you knew about all of those things BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT and you're just coming here to ***** for no reason.
Sorry I'm just so tired of these posts, everyone knows what the xoom is/isn't capable of, yet they go and pay $800 then ***** about it non stop.

Some people like to buy things, play with them for a week, and then decide to return them based on things they knew when they bought them. Then they come on forums and complain about a device they no longer own.
What kind of responses do you want, do you want us to feel sorry for you?
And let me get this straight....you payed $799 for the Xoom, and now your going to pay a $70 restocking fee. Yet an $600 WiFi only model 2 months down the road sounds good to you? What?

you are one pissed off dude

Actually no one knows that the Xoom isn't capable of playing back what everyone would consider HD media, because they sell it on this point in every commercial without feeling the need to clarify that its only in their VERY specific and unused form of 720p and 1080p that videos actually play. Everyone who asks me about the Xoom is surprised to hear that its dual core processor and eight core GPU is incapable of playing back HD h.264 in high profile, which is what everyone has. And it IS a Tegra 2 issue. I had an owner of a Notion Ink test on video that a high profile video is incapable of being played on the Notion Ink, so the claim made by multiple people here that its a lack of codecs for the Xoom seems to be false. The video is posted in the general section.
As for the other issues, yea the OP pretty much spent money on something knowing its shortcomings and is complaining about his bad decision. And how do you sign a 2 year contract with a company that you hate???

That's what I meant when I said there was one issue he didn't know about.

That's what I love about android it doesn't hold your hand and wipe your ass so to speak. Its and operating system that is full customizable. Hell you couldn't even change the wallpaper on an iPhone for years.....
The lack of video player makes sense but the fact that you can download any player out want makes up for it. Rockplayer lite can play pretty much any video you can throw at it.

SKReeettttt... hold [email protected]!!
I was merely pointing out the main points to why im choosing to return my XOOM but i just figured my post was long enough without tunring this into a miniseries. I dont expect any sympathy. I totally admit that i made a choice and in the end decided that it wasnt the right choice for me, thats all. Im allowed to change my mind arent i?. No i didnt pay 799. I payed 599(subsidized) which meant ill be on contract with Verizon for 2 years until the Ipad 4 comes out (not cool).
I did all of my homework before making this purchase. But even given that info without any solid confirmations from a number of companies until literally the 11th hour alot of it was guesswork. So i became my own guinea pig and if all it costs me is 70 bucks i think i got off easy.

After all these post it seems they have I pad experience and want to go back to the drone life

I sympathize with your frustration. Despite all the sugar coating and the feel good positive self help encouragement on this board, the reality is, that there really isn't an excuse for a device to have these shortcomings. If its not ready to be released don't release it.
I am amazed at how much crap people will put up with. $800 + tax to spend hours encoding videos -SERIOUSLY!!
Seems like every other post is some form of be patient and their will be unicorns and roses and sunshine just around the corner.
I am willing to bet you guys are all 100% right about all the fixes. Last I checked the turn-around time for new tech these days is about the time it takes to blink.
By the time the fixes are available, they will likely all be distributed in one, complete, non downloadable format called the XOOM 2.

Some of you are very defensive!
The OP knew the device had some shortcomings but wanted to give it a shot anyway. He did, and found more things he had an issue with. He doesn't want a 2year contract with VZW and decided to give us an account of why he is returning it. Get off his back.

does best buy charge a restocking fee for the xoom? if they don't i may be right behind the op in the next few days.
the having to re-encode video is killing it for me. i bought this as a media consumption device, a large part of that being videos, maybe using it with my hdtv too.
if i have to spend hours converting video, thats just a waste of time, id be better served using my samsung epic phone.
thats just sad, my freaking cell phone plays video better than the xoom.
seeing hte xoom and adam comparison video was disheartening. i have read that the tegra 2 was demoed by nvidia playing h264 1080p high profile video at 10mbit and its supposed to be able to do 720p high profile at 20mbit.
both the xoom and adam seem to be incapable of this currently, that being said, it is still POSSIBLE that this can be solved with software/codecs.
the problem is when and what if? if it does happen, when will it be? but what if it doesn't happen?
as i watch the days tick away till my deadline where the xoom is no longer returnable, im getting more and more concerned because i don't want to be stuck with an $800 device that only does half of what it advertised.
/rant
sorry a bout that, just wanted to get it off my chest too. i just don't know what to do. i see the potential in the device, but i also understand the fact that the potential may never be realized.

everyone is pissed off

Yawn.
iPad and likely iPad 2 cannot even do real multitasking and these are the things we find to complain about.
It's ok to have buyers remorse for the price, but anyone in the Android world knows that the beauty of the ecosystem is something and somebody will almost certainly come along and fix whatever problem you have.
It's a simple trade off between flexibility and the Apple dictatorship, if you want to be locked into what a system can do, be sure to buy an iPad, where if you have a problem, you are almost certainly stuck with it forever.
It an easy choice for me, I do not stress out waiting for improvements, I enjoy the continuously improvements over the lifetime of the hardware. I cannot even image being locked into the Apples 'my way or the highway' environment.
And in 5 years when Android is 70% of the market and Apple is relegated to it's sub 30% share, where it is most comfortable, there is a reason.
And last but not least, no device is perfect, and to expect that invites disappointment every time.
Not that he said he was going to iPad, but others in the thread seemed to suggest that is there solution.

Why do you assume that everyone who returns a XOOM wil immediately run out and buy an iPad. Many may just chose to wait and see what Samsung and LG and others will produce.
I have a Galaxy Tab and I chose to wait at this point. I'm not running out and buying an Apple device. This battle isn't all Apples and Oranges - or Androids and Apples......

My Nexus 1 couldn't record 720 video and FM didn't work until enterprising hackers figured out how to enable it. If I was waiting on official channels, it still wouldn't work. Just because Moto can't figure it out doesn't mean it won't eventually be done.

Agreeded. My wife and I each have a Xoom and we love it. Sure it has some short comings, but so does every device. In the end, the biggest selling point for me for the Xoom was the unlocked bootloader and the Google experience device. The software on this thing is going to be hacked and chopped up to no end. That is what most people are missing. Who cares that it wasn't 100% ready at launch...seriously. I am much happier having one to play with now rather then waiting another month or 2 or 3. Any of you saying otherwise is lying to yourself because of self inflicted buyers remorse.

I absolutely agree with you. Which is the reason my Xoom is also heading back to Best Buy. Its just not ready for prime time. Now i consider myself an early adopter and i have no problems doing so but this device is just way, way too young. Ill wait for it to mature again and purchase it later. In the mean time ill let my $800+ dollars sit in a high interest account ;-)

No one cares that you don't like it. Good bye have fun, hope you find what you are looking for elsewhere

Not sure im liking this Xoom

Trying hard to get used to the 16x9. Also, the weight of it at times I really notice after holding it in bed for a decent amount of time. Also the fact I did not get a data plan and it cost me $853. When I know a wifi only version is coming out that will be quite a bit cheaper. Honeycomb is taking some time to get used to. There aren't many apps for it, so I find myself getting bored. All i seem to be doing with it is web and facebook stuff. I think may return for ipad 2.

Of course it's gonna take some getting used to its a new OS. Obviously there aren't gonna be many apps, as it just came out a week ago.
Sitting here looking at an iPad, a Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Xoom.
Xoom is a bit too bulky. Love the screen size. Waiting for some more apps (I know it just came out, but there are apps on the Galaxy Tab that I want on the Xoom).
Not sure the Xoom is hanging around.
mine is going back for sure
then take it back. What makes people think that we care if you choose so and so over something else. You know what you want so get it. Xoom isn't cutting for you then get something you wwill be happy with. No nneed to share with everyone.
I hope HTC makes a large Honeycomb tablet. I completely ignored them after the release of the HTC Flyer because I didn't appreciate the screen size, and it didn't run Honeycomb. However it was beautiful, and even had a unibody design. The Flyer was definitely a nicely designed tablet, and I do want to see what HTC does with a larger device.
They seem to be the only company that creates Android products (well, Motorola too) that focuses heavily on build quality and design. I assume if they made a larger Honeycomb tablet it would actually look up-to-par with an iPad. The silver Xoom somewhat does. This post is somewhat entirely irrelevant =/
the Xoom is supposed to be a media powerhouse. Which is why the screen is so big. It is a bit heavy, but it hasn't botherd me that much in this last week.
My girlfriend said if I return mine I can go to sunfest in florida next month. Sunfest is going to be awesome with lots of big names including sublime with Rome and ziggy marley. I am 1200 miles away from west palm beach where it will be held. I want to go so bad.
I am not returning my Xoom.
For anyone complaining about it I can see your reasons. I really can. But these were all issues I knew before spending 800$ on it. I knew these issues because I spent lots of Time thinking about it and evaluating my options before I payed almost 900 for it.
If you did not do this you are a fool for spending that amount of money without allowing your brain to process information beforehand.
Someone remind me how many apps were on ios when the iPhone launched please.
Already returned mine. It is a nice product its just not ready for the market. The price is ridiculous for what it offers.
Great, since you are both getting rid of your Xooms you can go to a different XDA forum now. Yay.
Is there any reason why this couldn't have gone into the other threads like this? I don't know why the 6 (yes, random number) people with the same nit-picky issues can't hold each other's hand through the return process in the same thread. It's not even buyer's remorse. It's not being able to put your finger on what you want upfront, and faulting the thing you bought for being the way it's clearly advertised.

They have to let everyone know they are returning it.
HEY GUYS I DON'T LIKE THE XOOM, I AM RETURNING IT OKAY. I'LL COME BACK EVERY NOW AND THEN TO TELL YOU WHY I TOOK IT BACK.
I think these types of threads are stupid.
Anyone who would return their Xoom because someone else doesn't like is an idiot. Now if you are trying to get more information because maybe you don't understand how a the platform works that is different.
So if you want us to help you understand how Honeycomb and the Moto Xoom work that's great. On the other hand if you just don't like it no one really cares. The only person I need to like my Xoom is me and maybe my girlfriend.
Complaining about how people post their complaints won't do any good. They will post it regardless... you might as well ignore it and move on. If I actually had a Xoom and didn't like it, I would sure as hell post in a thread (maybe not a new one) exactly why I don't like it.
All that I'm afraid of is that the Honeycomb OS itself will never make it past the "nice-try" stage. I love the Xoom so far but it IS a risky business right now. I am convinced that other HC tablets will push the demand for apps and updated software but can "we" win the fight? The only time I would be sorry to have purchased the Xoom is when support for it stops and it becomes an orphan. Other than that - still have to break the news to my wifey

Ok. That information would be useful if:
- Your Xoom was suffering from a defect of design (iPhone 4 antenna) that is probably shared with other Xooms.
- If in your research of how the product was understood to work, you found something nobody else had, or were commenting about an issue to help bring about a consensus.
- If there was some way of showing whether or not you were a knee-jerk purchaser, or someone that bothered to take 2 minutes and Google the Xoom before you bought it. This point has been exhausted, but buying a first generation device with an OS whose official innards weren't released to the overwhelming majority of developers even two weeks ago isn't for everyone. It's your own responsibility to research a product. The Xoom is exactly what Motorola said it was, and every issue everyone has ever posted other than nuances to the software was a click away from before the thing was even released. If someone wants to make threads about how stupid they were for spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on something before checking it out, I'll thumbs up those all day.
TLDR - Some of the Xoom's features were advertised as "released in the coming weeks" before the product's release. This is not news, or worth sharing as a reason for your return to the store.
Edit: Just thought of something. The video playback is annoying and was kind of a surprise. I'll totally give you that one. But with some playing around and effort I'm really satisfied with the quality.
returning it for ipad 2 .

[Q] Glitches

So after about a week or so with my Xoom, I am happy, unlike the fools that don't understand early adopting.
Anyway. Today I ran across two glitches that I would like to know if anyone else has encountered. First I put about three or four 720p videos on my xoom and it stopped audio from playing out of my xoom. In videos that were previously on it and the music app didn't work either. Second, I went to take a picture and the picture I snapped stayed in the viewfinder, didn't save, when I closed the camera app and tried to reaccess it I was stopped with a prompt stating "camera could not be found". A simple power off power on technique fixed both issues. But that was twice today I needed to do that after an almost flawless week.
Has anyone expiren ced either of these glitches or any others you'd like to mention?
If you start out calling people fools then you deserve to wallow in your glitches.

Anyone that spends 800 dollars on a device then pops online and complains about the stupidest things that are to be expected is a fool. This forum is filled with people *****ing because their fb widget doesn't work or their favorite app from froyo isn't running properly. Anyone that wastes up space like that on this forum is a fool. Don't spend that much money on something and come here to ***** about things that should be expected.
And you good sir are a fool. Don't comment on this thread if you having nothing of use to say.
I pre ordered it and think its junk. I returned it and lost no money in the transaction. How is that foolish? Whats foolish is $800 for something that a cheaper tablets can do just as well.

Maybe I should fix this cause it was really meant to be harmless. I started this thread after reading a post about someone calling the xoom junk because he/she could not run a few apps he had on his phone on his Xoom. And this was the reason for his return.
Now like I said in that post, I can understad why people would be dissapointed with the Xoom. It shipped with aa **** stock player when it is supposedly suppose to be a media powerhouse, just to mention one of the few things wrong.
However if you purchased a Xoom this early into the game, and expect it to be able to run all your apps from Froyo, you are a damn fool.
It was not a burn to people that decided to take theirs back, just to those that don't understsnd what early adopting is, and for all intensive purpses come here to complain about it.
No one cares that your fb widget doesn't work, and if that is your sole purpose for returning this device you are an idiot for having bought it.

The Xoom being junk, and the Xoom not being for you is two different things. The OP's frustration with a certain breed of early adopters is completely justified.
You are a click away from the information that would've saved you time and effort. Instead you chose to buy a brand new product with brand new software, and ***** because it's not seasoned, and because you can't understand what it's capable of.
i haven't rooted yet due to the concerns of not being able to get the upgrade. But I believe its now confirmed that the upgrade will still go to those that have rooted.
I have a video converter I used, but what caused me problems was a youtube streaming saver. I've been using it to convert music videos posted by vevo into 720p. That was the only time it glitched.
The videos all play fine after the reboot.
I also encountered problems trying to transfer 1080p files to my Xoom. For some reason my windows 7 computer stops the transfer well after it starts and is seemingly going fine.
I'm not sure if 1080p is even worth it considering the file size and that 720 looks beautiful but any advice would be gratefully taken.
I did happen to get a 1080 on my Xoom, however it did not play on the stock video player and actually stopped my other videos from playing till I had a chance to take it off.
Again I am sorry for anyone that took offense to my fool comment, unless you are on of the few fools on this forum that just wants to complain your apps aren't working.
I can't imagine all the returns that they are going to have to process for people that don't fully understand what they are buying.

That makes no effing sense. Could you imagine if Apple sold a new Mac Pro and then when people complained that it was glitchy and things werent working that obviously should, their response being "You shouldn't have spent so much money on our device. Don't you know that you are an early adopter? Stop complaining on our forums about your problems." For the premium price Motorola was charging, the tablet should have had next to no bugs.
LOL.
I understand being frustrated by the half of the frontpage of the general section that is people complaining about their Xoom, but realize that the entire "early adopter" excuse is nonsense. Android will never make a dent in the tablet market if every tablet has to be allowed to go through an "early adopter" phase where it is riddled with bugs. No Apple product goes through an "early adopter" phase. Some of their products have flaws, but out of the box you do not see nearly the same amount of issues. For the premium Motorola demanded for their tablet, there should have been much more quality control testing of not only the hardware but also of Honeycomb. I can easily understand why people are pissed when they spend $850+ dollars on a device and they get home and their browser is crashing on them and their widgets arent working, etc, etc, etc.

I believe anybody who knows anything about android should have expected some issues with apps running on a new version os. If you bought a xoom within the first week of its launch you should expect some bugs to be found. Comparing this to apple products isn't really fair because this is a new platform. This is probably why apple hasn't released a tablet os just because of all the testing that would need to be done. Which im sure they are currently working on. It will just have to be perfect before we see any sign of it. Google on the other hand works entirely differently. Take a look at the first android release on the G1. That system was far from perfect but it was released anyways for people to get their hands on it. It allowed them to start working with it and see what was needed. I understand what your saying but this is nothing new. This is how android has always been. Thays why they release new versions every few months. To fix the code that was wrong in the last and add some new features.

I stopped reading after your every tablet going thru early adopter phase. You obviously don't know what your talking about. We are early adopted to honeycomb, not so much the Xoom you bafoon. The xoom works fine, the os is what has minor glitches.

The first iPhone had some huge holes in its capabilities. Some would call the lack of flash early on when html5 was nowhere in sight a huge problem. Couldn't send picture messages, pretty sure you couldn't even type in landscape. You just have a short term memory.
We're not asking for it to happen with every tablet. The is the first tablet running 3.0. Where were you when Windows 7 was released? A fantastic OS that was only sort of compatible with things that could run on Vista. Software needed some time to adapt. That's literally all that's happening here.

Severely blown out of proportion. Don't bring this into this thread lol this is about Xoom glitches...

How is the Motorola Xoom? The best, or not?

I had a chance to play with a Xoom briefly at a local Best Buy and was pleasantly surprised how well I liked it. It felt solid and significant and looked very nice. Honeycomb was...well...pure honey. It left me with the distinct desire to own one. Though recent test have the iPad2 blowing it away, the iPad2 doesn't have the higher res display of the Xoom. I would much rather watch the Xoom display than the iPad2.
But I need people;s experiences with the Xoom since it is a significant investment for me. I would buy the full-priced WiFi-only version, that's why it would be such a significant investment...no subsidized pricing. However, knowing what I know of Motorola's support tactics, we all really should be boycotting them rather than considering buying anything from them. They never update any non-subsidized products. If you own a Moto device from a carrier, you wil eventually get updates and bug fixes. But it you buy one outright, you are abandon as soon as they have your money.
I paid a 1000$ for mine and I am very happy.

Based on what I read in another thread about some bugs in HC, I've decided to either wait for a Google produced tablet with HC or stick with Apple and wait for an iPad with a higher res display. I know Google and Apple take good care of their customers with updates, support and bug fixes so it won't be a worry to me. The carriers and other manufacturers tend to be greedy and slight their customers. I won't take a chance on them.

+ The Android OS is more friendly for everyday use. I owned a iPad, loved it, but when I got the Xoom, I realized that a tablet could be way better To say it simply, with honeycomb you have everything at hand with a simple touch, while on the iPad you have to browse through many screens to get things done. Huge difference if you want to use a tablet more productively and not for incidentally browsing, reading etc.
For example:
Picture this, I have four very active email accounts. I have a widget for each of them on my desktop. When I want to check my mail I just press home and I directly see the the new messages in each mailbox. On the iPad I first had to open the mail app and then I had to click on each of the different mailboxes to see the new messages. What a usability difference....
And this is just one example. I think Android tablets will definitely be a tough competition for the iPad. Didn't expect that till I did the switch myself. Lot of potential.

It showed the tegra as sort of lacking in the graphics department. Personally, I didn't buy a xoom to play games, I have a PC and PS3 for that.

My 2 cents for you, I looked at the Xoom simply as something to use while 'someone' is on my laptop for hours at a time. My nice new Dell Win7 laptop cost a little more than a Xoom, and it does so much more, so I personally don't look at the Xoom as a "PC replacement". It's something I plan to use at home mostly. I bought the WiFi only one because I didn't want to be tied to Verizon for 2 years, because we really don't know how long Moto is going to put the effort into the Xoom. I don't want to potentially be paying Verizon a monthly fee for a lightly/none supported product in months 12-24 down the road.
The clamor about "Xoom has no apps" is total BS. Having 10,000 apps that make fart noises isn't something to tout. Not everything is perfect, but I'm the type that wants to personalize my device. I think Ipad has it's place as does the Xoom. People that bash either just have incomplete lives with nothing better to do. In my opinion, Ipad is more mainstream, it's what the 'unwashed masses' will flock to, because it has a consistent and simple interface, stability and requires the person to be less involved with 'setting things up'.
I'm not a 'media intensive' person...I could give 2 ****s how Youtube works on the Xoom. I have not tried the HDMI output yet, but in using 'TV' apps I'm happy that I have the option, if I take a trip where I have WiFi that I can stream music/video (I don't care that it's not in 1080p, I can live without it on even a 6 hour trip). I'm intelligent enough to read the postings here, to find apps that let me stream Dexter Season 5, which is NOT out on Netflix yet, so THAT was cool to me. I did try the NHL.com Gamecenter streaming of live games and it worked pretty good.
Also, I have an EVO through Sprint, so for $30 a month I can activate it's HotSpot feature and get unlimited data. So in my mind, if I really want to use it 'away from home' for whatever reason someone has I can also turn on/off the Hotspot feature whenever and they prorate the $30/mo to the day. So if I turn the feature on/off for 5 days in the month, it costs me $5 for that month. I could decide to be lazy too, and just leave it enabled all month, and I think that's a better deal than a 2 year contract w/ Verizon with a monthly data cap. Of course what I am doing requires 'effort' that so many people just don't want to put into things.
To me, I guess having the 3/4G options would be nice at times, but really, where outside of Home does a person really need to whip out their tablet? You going to take it to a movie or dinner, or to the ballgame? If so, why did you pay to attend something and then stick your face in your tablet? Or if you are on a bus/train, why don't you just stick a big "please rob me" sign on your back? If you are using it for 'work' chances are that you need to use it for more than a few minutes and likely for data intensive things, so your likely only going to be 'working' someplace with WiFi....if your company doesn't have WiFi (like mine) that's probably a sign that you employer doesn't want your WiFi device at work
@ austonja, well stated, now this was one of the best replies I have read in a while.

3d tests. but apple is vying for top mobile gaming platform so you can see why.
I think you are asking the wrong question. Of course the Xoom is not the BEST...but then NO product fulfills that criteria for me. The Xoom is excellent. I enjoy it greatly, and there are reasons I picked it over the other options which are still valid. I am satisfied with my choice, but it was a choice, and given slightly different thinking, I am sure I would have been happy with the iPad 2 or the other new Honeycomb tablets when they arrive. I personally think you would not regret a Xoom purchase...but that is just my opinion.
Xoom is decent, but its just the hardware. Before the end of the year I'm sure we will be seeing some great devices that will trump the xoom. Also 2012 I'm sure will be a very exciting year for tablets. Very excited to see what will happen
If now talking about Honeycomb, I believe from what I see is so far the best. Once it get its kinks worked out and we go through a few updates Honeycomb will be the best OS out there for tablets. Honeycomb>IOS>Palm(HP)>blackberry qnx

None of those sites you listed performed the test again and some of them were simply just forums discussing the information Anandtech presented to us. They only posted Anandtech's graphs and reported the information back again. Therefore it was still "one review" and the fanboys can still say "Just one review!". I'm not trying to be negative, I get your point and what you were trying to prove. The iPad 2 is more powerful than the Xoom and anyone who claims otherwise is... in denial, or a fanboy.

Sorry about sounding hostile. It isn't meant. I have had a bad day already. Having been infracted for responding to hateful people and those very same people have not been infracted. When you are an innocent person who wants nothing more than to express views and allow others to express their views and you get accosted for it, it leaves you with a seriously jaded view of life and humanity. It makes a person hope there truly is something to the 2012 myth because I've had my fill of the hatred people love to spew.
As far as the iPad2 goes, I wouldn't buy one of those either. I don't like looking at highly visible pixels on a screen. The iPad2's 1024x768 res is just way too low for this day and time. I did love the display of the Xoom and was yearning for a Xoom...until I was reminded it would be supported by Motorola. But I did read a post that said Google would be updating the Xoom. If this is true...and I'm trying to get confirmation of this in another thread...I may yet acquire a Xoom. As I said, though, I won't get one through or locked to carriers. It would be the full-priced one with WiFi only.

The iPad is a finished product. It's a good one, too. (My wife has the iPad 1.)
The Xoom is not finished, and it approaches the new iPad already.
The iPad is never gonna suck, but it's pretty obvious the Xoom has the potential to kick it's ass. However, I have very little faith that Google, Motorola or Verizon will bring it to that point. We'll need to rely on the Android development community for that.
In my opinion, the only time a Xoom will ever be really great is when it's rooted and has a custom ROM installed.
MartyLK said:
The sad part is, I predicted someone would waste their time to say that. It seems people would rather post negative light about others than useful information.
The *reason* why I posted all of those was because the fanboys would come back and say, "Aha! Just one review! That doesn't mean anything!"
However, knowing that someone would complain that all of those links weren't needed, I chose that direction rather than allowing the fanboy/girls a voice.

Are you for real? Go back and read all of your posts in this thread.
You posted that many links to show how people reported on the ONE benchmark? What does that have to do with anything? Not one of those sites re-ran or even confirmed the benchmark themselves, so it is relavent to point out that you could have and should have posted only one link.
You're trying to find fault for some reason in a product you don't own and then post it on the forum. You have to see why this might make me thing you're trolling for no reason.
If you don't like Motorola based on one forum post, that's fine. If you don't like the Xoom based on one test, that's fine. If you don't like it because you actually tried it and tested it for a long time, that's another story. Posting links we have all seen (weeks ago), doesn't help anyone on this forum or help anyone decide to/not to buy something that you don't even own.
Just how I feel about this whole thread.

That's the problem with Motorola products, the BIOS and bootloader are locked. The only time a custom ROM can be flashed is if it's based on an official Motorola ROM. That's one of my biggest concerns about Motorola. They hinder the XDA community from doing their magic on Motorola devices. If Google releases an updated Honeycomb ROM that deals with bugs and provides performance enhancement, the XDA community can't use it on Motorola devices until Motorola makes an official ROM out of it.

I am still on the fence. Just got mine a couple of days ago. I have had a handful of problems with apps FC'ing. What I think is really dumb is the case that Staples sells puts the power plug on the bottom so you cant use the Xoom propped up and have it plugged in at the same time.
I am also not convinced yet that I am a good candidate for a tablet. I create a lot of content but don't consume a lot of content. I still have to grab my laptop to do photo editing, faster text editing, video chatting (other than the GTalk app). I don't think a lot of my issues are specific to the Xoom or more Android 3.0 compatibility issues.
I think the vast majority of problems will be sorted out soon but I am not sure I need to pay full price to be an early adopter yet.

I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!
I think I am going to go for my money back, and possibly buy the 16gb version when it comes out to save a few bucks.
I am tempted to get an iPad2, which makes me feel like an asshole but all the good apps are on there now. However I am learning java and will hopefully have time to write some apps soon, thereby making an empty app store more of a positive than negative.
Before anyone flames me for thinking of getting an ipad, its just cause I feel like its the one form factor device where I might not care as much if its locked down (of course I will jailbreak it on day one if I get it, and will be dual-booting android on it sometime after the ASOP comes out, google...)
If all I want to do with this device is read/watch/consume content, and ipad has all the content right now, it kinda makes sense. And I am confident the ipad2 could be an awesome honeycomb device. With the amount of sales it has had there should be enough interest in that as a project. Enough to give the google all the more reason to hold off on releasing the source code. Dammit..

I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!

Nobody will flame you. Its personal preference. Some ppl like changing devices to fit there pref and some choose to use their device as just consuming data. Don't worry. This device will eventually run stable. We just have to wait.
Do you know me? What should you care if I flame you? The only time I would care if you buy an I pad would be if you bought it with MY money.

I don't know if I got a better xoom than most if the people here but I am freaking loving this thing. The screen is beautiful, the white's are actually white, something I have not seen on anything except the Apple devices. I get no lag whatsoever on my home screens after oc'ing to 1.5 governor set at interactive, and the stereo speakers are really nice. I absolutely love this thing. I got a sweet car dock from a dealer in the UK so I can use it as a bad ass head unit in my car, and when its hooked up to my system with great speakers and 2 12's in the trunk it sounds as good or better than my gf's iPhone 5, something I have never found with any other android device, even my inspire with srs sound. Yes, it has some bugs but for what I need it to do it does it wonderful. I am using it as a complete laptop replacement. I am actually thinking of selling my macbook pro. And I think we are not gonna get many people posting here about their gripes with the device because...
1. They want to start their own post for attention/tolling
2. They don't use the search button
3. There is far to much effort for them to actually read through a forum for the appropriate place to post

LMAO, i hate me some trolls, im made this post hoping it would attract them all but i guess i was wrong lol. stupid people. guess they never used a forum before.
I regret buying the Xoom because I should have waited for a tablet that is thinner, lighter, better screen, working micro sd slot, working 4G and has a pen input, a nornal micro usb that is rechargeable, and most importantly can play high profile .mkv 1080p without needing to do any conversion.
How come no company can do it right?
My biggest question is:
How come no European country make any tablets?
If Germany and Italy can create Mercedes, BMW, Farrari and Lamborghini, they can certainly make a measly sub $1,000 tech device.
keep on waiting. wait on, while we enjoy out Xoom. the best thing invented since the internet. Xoom, Xoom, Xoom...
May I offer these words of encouragement to anyone who has bought a Xoom but who hasn't been involved with Android and modded ROMS before?
The out of the box is not overly impressive when compared, as it inevitaly will be, with the iPad. It is disconcerting to have Forced Closes on a device costing what it does as regularly as one does. And there is not much eye-candy included either.
However, the hardware specs are so good that I have little doubt that the Xoom will be the equivalent of the HTC HD2 (which if you don't know started as a Windows Mobile 6 phone, got Froyo and then Gingerbread and now dual boots into Android or Windows Phone 7!) once the developers get their hands on the source code.
Hang onto your Xoom and you will see in the weeks to come that it will get better and better and, instead of having a gadget which is all shiny and cool for the first week and then becomes old news, you will have a gadget that keeps improving as each new ROM is released.

[INFO] 10.1" Galaxy Tabs Given Away at Google's I/O

Well, you probably heard by now...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-launching-in-about-a-month-google-giv/
... and if this is any indication of developer support for custom ROMs, than I think I'm going to have to defect to the Galaxy Tab over the Transformer. The same thing happened when the HTC EVO 4G was given away. Some were immediately sold on eBay, while those that kept them built amazing ROMs, apps, etc before the device was even out. It has by far the most active development community behind it, even over the Nexus line. I feel a similar trend coming for the Galaxy Tab... not the Xoom, and especially not the Transformer.
I feel Asus is really going to lose a lot of sales when the Galaxy Tab is released. Something they could have avoided by having more upfront stock, or releasing the TF earlier. Oh well, hopefully they'll learn from this mistake.

When you follow the Xoom threads they mostly hate the Samsung devices because they will get updates every blue moon or so. Maybe Samsung will win the battle but as long as the Transformer get some attention I don't care. I personally don't need 100s of ROMs. It's always the same with technology - the moment you buy it it's obsolete and something fancier is released.
Yea, that is my feeling as well...

I think this is good for tablet app development. At the moment, that dearth of tablet apps is pulling down HC.
I couldn't care less if Samsung gets better custom ROM's.
Now I can find out if it has Tegra 2 or Exynos.
dying to find out myself too. I am jumping ship if Exynos and supports high profile 720p.

Well the Transformer supports High Profile 720p, its just Honeycomb doesn't support Tegra 2's hardware decoding properly yet.
On eBay all ready and over $1000 in a matter of minutes !

I just found a dead pixel on my TF and coupled with the creaky chasis I'm thinking about returning it.. Tomorrow is my last day to decide.
I just figure, if I dont like Samsung's offering, it will be much easier at that time to get myself a TF. But I love the TF! ahhh this sucks
This makes me even madder that I could not get through the I/O registration process because the servers could not handle the load. Silly servers cost me a free tablet!!!
I am 5 miles away, maybe I should drive by and see if some extra tablets are lying around Moscone

Samsung will likely cost a lot more ?
I didn't keep my Transformer and I do somewhat miss it, with 3.1 coming.
The keyboard lag on forums was driving me crazy, couple that with HD video issues.
Seen lag on both keyboards.
I'll get a Samsung to move on, but hope it or 3.1 solves HC issues.

I had a couple dead pixels and a skewed off center screen. I sent my TF back for a replacement. Waiting for stock.
I was thinking about the Samsung but it isn't as feature full as TF and I don't know what the cost will be, will it be wifi only at launch or just 3/4G...
Seeing Samsung listed as a partner in the timely updates slide made me really start thinking though. Not sure what to expect from Asus, it's too early to tell but I can already tell there are quality control issues.
To be honest, there is just no pleasing some people. Ya'll will never be happy with any tablet/cell/puter, lol.
If you mean the people sending back their Transformers because of manufacturing defects / poor quality control, that's crap.
I'm not going to be satisfied spending hundreds of dollars on something that is defective.
Thankfully, besides woefully needing updates and having a useless dock my Transformer has been working pretty well.

Another thing I don't understand is why people are so fixated on the high profile issue... As the poster above stated - there's no pleasing people *sigh*

A lot of people are fixated on the high profile issue because:
*they just spent $400 on it
*don't want to spend hours upon hours re-encoding the their movies again
*can store more movies since file size are reduce
*because at the moment tablets are mainly used for media consumption and web browsing

But this has been a known issue since the XOOM came out! If people don't do their research before then they shouldn't bash the product.
I also had to re-encode all of my movies because the digital copies and DVD/Blu-Ray rips that I had were low res for my iPod classic. Sucks but it is what it is! If you get programs that have batch capabilities then it's a matter of starting it and it will do the rest on its own. However, I can't argue about the file size... only excuse is that storage is so cheap nowadays
I agree. People should have done more research before buying the Transformer if they were looking for the "perfect tablet". Next they'll be complaining how they can't use a USB hard drive without buying a dock. Oh wait.

I don't think there is such a thing as the "perfect tablet" at the moment. It's a fairly new mass phenomenon so give it time!
