Kernels - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I am wondering if kernels are more "universal" than roms? I ask because I would really like to be able to overclock this tab a little but need a compatible kernel and Im not aware of any more for this tab yet. So I wonder since kernels dont have to have drivers and all that if one from a different tab would work?

if your talking about the tab 4 t230/t230nu then the hardware is very specific to the devices and building kernels/recoveries is very difficult flashing kernels for any other device will almost certainly be bad news for your t230/t230nu.. and a beginner dev i would not advise it and just wait for us devs to come up with something..

Its the 530, but thanks. Am I missing anything anywhere? Is there currently a kernel I can overclock with?

currently i dont believe there is a specific kernel to overclock the 530 but i may be wrong unless there is a rom which comes with a clockable kernel... you may want to have a hunt around in the tab 4 dev sections..

Custom kernel?

Okay, I understand that the bootloader is locked and what not and that means no over clocking but I have downloaded a app (dx/d2 overclocking) from the market to allow overclocking and have seen it on the forums here on how to manually. Does this mean we have custom kernels running or just that we have achieved a bypass to overclock. One would think this means they have hacked the boot loader and we are now running custom kernals but im kinda a noob so some more info on the topic would be greatly appreciated. And also, what is cyaogen (sp?)..I see it everywhere and have yet to get it due to not having custom kernels but I still don't know what it is. Thanks

Currently the method of overclocking is done through scripts. Cyanogen is a developer and usually people refer to his ROMs that he creates as Cyanogen as well.

This is not a custom kernel. The word of some great minds is that a kernel has been developed and is still being worked upon but they have been able to get it working at least. There are still some bug issues with it such as the cell radio not working. Until they can find out things like that we wont have the custom kernel.

So there is a kernel currently booting besides the stock moto kernel? That is huge even if there are problems with assorted hardware not working. How is this the thread to hear that news lol.

Its not official and I didnt say that lol.
My mistake. Things like cell radio not working aren't really a big deal if it doesn't boot though. Guess i'm reading too much into what you said.

Well that really is good news that they have a custom kernel kind of working because that means they are close. I know a good amount about all of this stuff and rooting and what not and try to check by the fourms about once a day so im not a complete noob but thanks for answering some of my questions.

[Q] Porting Voodoo Kernel

Hi is it posible now to port Voodoo Kernel beacuse we have a CWM(ClockWorkMod recovery)on our device?
I dont know if i can post links so if i cant haree pls change my post.Thx
Here is the link:
http://project-voodoo.org/porting
If it is can somebody port it?
Thx.....
Can you tell us *why* you want this kernel? It seems to me that the FuguMod kernel provides everything that this Voodoo kernel does, and more, for the i5800/5801.
because the name is so coool ^^
beacuse if we have 2 kernels we can choose wich is good foe our phone(im not saying that Fugumod kernel is not good...But is good sor our community if we have 2 kernels from galaxy s forums)thats all....

If you want to port it yourself then go for it, if you want to convince somebody else to port it this reasoning will most likely not be enough

Kernels

can someone list which kernels work with the 0.014 ICS update for the a500? im sick of the stock kernel that came with cm9, i believe and want to flash another one.
my tabs unlocked, cm9 installed, but is laggy so i think OC'ing it may help a tad.
ty in advanced as im new to the world of flashing kernels

Currently, there are no known OC/UV kernels for the 500/501 running ICS. With the exception of TegraOwners, however it only works with the Tegraowner rom as best I know.

damn, i was hoping there was a kernel out there.. is it possible to take a kernel from another tegra2 device & flash it to the a500?
thank you btw for all your answers to my possible ridiculous questions!

Look in my thread , they are not OC kernels , the tweaked ones but they improve smoothness big time.
One thing they are build for 1.031.00 based rom , they will work on older versions but it is possible that camera fails.

[Q] overclocking?

i'm pretty newb when it comes to phones and roms, but anyway i've managed to get a Pacman 4.1.2 JB rom on my phone, working lovely.
Now i'm wondering about overclocking.
I can't seem to find any Kernels anywhere for this device, or if it's even kernels i'm supposed to be looking for?
My nexus 7 i just change the kernel if i want faster processor, but not so sure with my HD2.
Any help would be appreciated
Custom ROMS's have kernels with overclocking in them
Just install SetCPU and have fun. Alternatively, use the built in controls in developer settings.

I think you have a "Rom Control" in Pacman.

Help here!

I want to know if I need to install a custom rom or a custom kernel or a combination of both so that I can overclock my phone(1ghz single core). Please help. Why is everybody so silent here, so unwilling to answer a simple question as this. My fourth post of the same question.

Any custom ROM that comes packaged with an included kernel should allow you to overclock. AFAIK the oveclocking capability lies within the kernel (at least with Xperias this is the case) . At the least, a stock ROM with a custom kernel and a CPU/Performance app will give you overclocking options.
My suggestion though is to get a ROM like PAC, that comes with a kernel and the needed app to manage your CPU settings.

That is not fully correct.
Most PAC builds use the stock CM kernel. Our ROM offers performance settings to manage that, but they generally do not allow overclocking.
Some of us have additional builds with performance kernels built in. Not all of us though.
Your best approach would be to install PAC for your device then check your devices XDA thread for a popular performance kernel and flash that afterwords. The performance control will see the new CPU settings and you will then be able to configure it as you need.
DL an oc app, like CPU tuner or whatever..

Yes, you need a kernel with overclock support .
On Gs2 I use PAC and dorimanx kernel
On your phone you need to search for kernels and roms for your model
