I want to know if I need to install a custom rom or a custom kernel or a combination of both so that I can overclock my phone(1ghz single core). Please help. Why is everybody so silent here, so unwilling to answer a simple question as this. My fourth post of the same question.

Any custom ROM that comes packaged with an included kernel should allow you to overclock. AFAIK the oveclocking capability lies within the kernel (at least with Xperias this is the case) . At the least, a stock ROM with a custom kernel and a CPU/Performance app will give you overclocking options.
My suggestion though is to get a ROM like PAC, that comes with a kernel and the needed app to manage your CPU settings.

That is not fully correct.
Most PAC builds use the stock CM kernel. Our ROM offers performance settings to manage that, but they generally do not allow overclocking.
Some of us have additional builds with performance kernels built in. Not all of us though.
Your best approach would be to install PAC for your device then check your devices XDA thread for a popular performance kernel and flash that afterwords. The performance control will see the new CPU settings and you will then be able to configure it as you need.
DL an oc app, like CPU tuner or whatever..

Yes, you need a kernel with overclock support .
On Gs2 I use PAC and dorimanx kernel
On your phone you need to search for kernels and roms for your model

All this is answered in android development. Check ur builds thread. It will telk u which kernwl is being used and what is enabled. Im using shrubcrafts build. The included kernel has overclocking undervolting inckuded.

ok maybe I wasn't clear (blame it on the dutch! ;-)
Of course I know which kernel I'm using at the moment, indeed it's mentioned in the thread of the build.
However, I can't find any info on the activated options in the newest kernel (for example the kernel of the 24th august).
As far as I understand, someone started adding/changing some lines in some file and recomplied the kernel to have other options activated. I'm not sure, and want to know if recent autobuilds do have those options by default.
Please correct me if I'm wrong!

a ROM always includes a kernel, but you can flash another one if you want to.

I wouldn't recommend that for daily use though.. apparently it's buggy as.
i'm using this kernel since an hour now and haven't found any problems yet. battery life seems quite good also but i'll report back after a while
What is the easiest way to overclock, I know that a different kernel is needed to overclock, but does overclocking require a completely new ROM

You only need a new kernel if you're running stock froyo.
There's a lot of apps on the market that offer overclocking (SetCPU is a nice one)
Easiest way to overclock is choosing cm7. No extra apps or kernels needed. It has inbuilt oc kernel and options for setting CPU frequency. And greater stability at higher clocks too.

Sorry to be a pain; do you have an idea of which kernel I should use?
Some other user might give better info, since I'm not using an HTC Sense based rom/stock.

Yes Cm7 IS really great, in fact you can customize almost everything, and I really like that feature...
As for overclocking you can overclock I think to max of 768mhz(if I'm wrong somebody please correct me)...maybe you can a little bit more but I think it is kernel related...

Till date, there are 2 primary kernels which are available - HCDR.Kernel by Jacob and nFinity by arco, and both OC support upto 768MHz. (I think Deep-Knight has recently developed a new kernel for his ROM, which allows OC upto 600MHz)

You can use any. nFinity MC4 offers more features though, like Smartass Governor. It can be found here:

Which is stable till 729 Mhz overclock m using max 729 and min 490 (I guess)
Phone is Much faster than before and love playing angry birds
I read all the 2 posts, but Im not sure to change the original slow kernel, for a faster. All have some bugs, battery life, wifi, etc...
I dont know, which could be better for the stock rom, or which could be better than the original.

How can I flash just the kernel? And also back up my programs with titanium, or mybackup?

I'm currently running on SuperStock-Rom V2.4 and planning to flash SuperStock-Kernel.

One is a full ROM with different software and various interface differences, depending on the ROM you choose.
A kernel is the base operator for any OS. This tells your hardware how to work and potentially unlocks features the standard kernel does not allow.
Not sure if this explains them well in non technical terms.

I think i had the wrong question here.
I was actually thinking the Kernel is a different ROM that comes with Kernel version.
So Kernel is a add-on to flash on top of a ROM. Right?

Yes. The two are totally separate things. You can be rooted on a stock ROM and use a custom kernel.
Likewise, you carbon be in a custom ROM with a stock kernel.
To ask which is best wouldn't make sense as they are two totally different parts of a phone\OS.

In my case, I'm currently in a custom ROM right now which is SuperStock-Rom V2.4, can I flash the SuperStock-Kernel V2.0.1?

depends rom might conflict with kernel since kernel moght set flags the rom woukd freak on. A good kernel can make a stock rom fly. But a stock kernel cant help even the most optimised rom. Kernel is what gives it the horse power.
Just make sure you have a flashable backup of your current kernel so you can revert if you run in to any boot issues, then you should be good to go.
