Custom kernel? - Droid 2 General

Okay, I understand that the bootloader is locked and what not and that means no over clocking but I have downloaded a app (dx/d2 overclocking) from the market to allow overclocking and have seen it on the forums here on how to manually. Does this mean we have custom kernels running or just that we have achieved a bypass to overclock. One would think this means they have hacked the boot loader and we are now running custom kernals but im kinda a noob so some more info on the topic would be greatly appreciated. And also, what is cyaogen (sp?)..I see it everywhere and have yet to get it due to not having custom kernels but I still don't know what it is. Thanks

Currently the method of overclocking is done through scripts. Cyanogen is a developer and usually people refer to his ROMs that he creates as Cyanogen as well.

This is not a custom kernel. The word of some great minds is that a kernel has been developed and is still being worked upon but they have been able to get it working at least. There are still some bug issues with it such as the cell radio not working. Until they can find out things like that we wont have the custom kernel.

So there is a kernel currently booting besides the stock moto kernel? That is huge even if there are problems with assorted hardware not working. How is this the thread to hear that news lol.

Its not official and I didnt say that lol.

My mistake. Things like cell radio not working aren't really a big deal if it doesn't boot though. Guess i'm reading too much into what you said.

Well that really is good news that they have a custom kernel kind of working because that means they are close. I know a good amount about all of this stuff and rooting and what not and try to check by the fourms about once a day so im not a complete noob but thanks for answering some of my questions.

Who will give the first ROM

As the title states.. at this moment there is absolutely no reason why we dont have custom roms floating around for our devices yet, other then the fact that noone has taken the time to make one
We have a fully functional recovery from koush as far as pushing custom roms go.. we also have a fully functional froyo base to work with as well as a froyo .32 kernal.. nothing is stopping us at this point other then the fact that noones done one yet
Whos going to be the first to throw one out there?
Whoever it is, please remove all the bloat... Deodex all the system files for easy theming and try to zipalign and optimize however you can
This thread is absolutely useless, not to mention in the wrong section.
anybody can post it. But why sud be Start to Speculate or Gamble. When it will be available it will be like we got Froyo 2.2 stock image

if your phone has root you can remove all the bloat you want and install whatever you want. you should get started with root explorer
Make your own F***ing rom then if you dont feel like waiting for somone to make one. Anyway I bet there is many people working on roms right for the droid x
So many smartasses. How about you guys lay off and get a life, the guy was just asking a question.
I agree with the OP, right around the time that koush released his recovery there were a bunch of people talking about coming out with froyo roms (birdman and rainabba namely)but without the froyo kernel, then the leaked froyo came out and nothing ever happened since.
Now we have a froyo kernel to work with, we just need a stock android build without any oem customization.
Bootloader still locked?

I dont feel like we really need a new rom, whats it gonna do for me? It will either be 2.1 or the 2.2 leak with different themes/different apps, something I could and would rather do myself.
Outside of theming, I dont see the point.

There is definately benefits to be had as far as performance goes as well.. cleaning up the froyo build and optimizing / zipaligning the apks will get things going well, and as you said as far as theming goes, a completely deodexed rom will allow complete themes from A to Z not just status bar things, could even put a new lockscreen in place that may not have any crazy lag
I could see an industrious dev cleaning up the froyo build a little, but I have had almost zero issues with this build, outside of a build.prop change. We will see one soon I am sure, hell, Im just glad we finally have a custom recovery.

Yeah i just find it humerous that everyone was complaining we dont have a custom recovery and the world is goin to end, and im not going to buy a Droid X because the bootloader is locked etc etc yada yada... but then when we actually get rom flashing capabilities, noone even uses it lol
Isn't the bootloader for the Droid X still locked? IE no custom roms?

So, maybe this would be better asked in another thread, but how would I go about pulling the recovery image in order to customize it? I'm simply assuming that's how it's done, so if not, let me know. I would like to start messing with making some roms, but have no clue where to start as it seems to be all device-centric. Where does one learn all of this?

I don't understand how it's doable with a locked bootloader? If someone created a clean froyo rom how would it boot? Wouldn't that be similar to removing all the apk's from the leaked rom and expecting it to boot?
Please tell me if I'm wrong...

We can do custom roms, but have to include and not modify the stock kernel. So, no modular overclocking I believe.
Basically, the first roms to come out will be de blur'd so to speak, and then AOSP roms will hit later. Promise Just a matter of time.
The original lockdown of the bootloader and "efuse" scared a lot of dev's off of getting the X. I only know a handful of people deving for the X, so I assume this is why customs roms are taking a while to come out.
Regardless, they'll be here soon enough. Patience
Im getting the x soon, and maybe i can whip up a rom

Suggestions

So I just picked up a tab today and of course the first thing to do is root, so just a couple of questions, I have a SGS and am on a CM7 ROM, so Im not a complete noob, although this next question may be a noob one... I was looking at the VFP OC kernel and was wondering if it was rooted, meaning can I just flash that kernel and be rooted?
The useragent mod looks to be a no brainer as far as having it, what other apps or mods would you guys consider standard ones to have?
I wont be doing anything till I fully read over what to do as far as rooting or anything else goes but it seems pretty straight forward since we are using the same tools i.e. CWM and ODIN, so just looking for suggestions ATM
Thanks ahead of time

Welcome! Use the rooting video guide to get CWM on your GT10, once you've done that just use the CWM program to flash both ROMs and Kernels.
As for the mods, you don't need them as they are already baked into most of the ROMs. Try Starburst or Task650 for ROMs, And definitely use pershoot's Kernel (and get the SetCPU app to overclock, you can get it free somewhere in these forums).
Have fun!

I9100G users Unite!

Introduction
I've had my I9100G for more than a week now and to date there's no hint of anyone working on a custom ROM or mod for it. I guess we'll have to resign ourselves to the fact that it's not really a popular model for the regular devs and if we want to get some mods or custom roms on our phones, we have to do it ourselves. I'm currently working on customising my phone, but since I have a day job and little actual experience in Android, it's going to take some time before I can put anything out. So I'm inviting fellow I9100G users to join me in the effort to get some mods developed for the I9100G.
Kernel
Firstly, the kernel. AFAIK, there are two available kernels so far for the I9100G - KH4 (Android 2.3.4) and KI1 (Android 2.3.5). There are rooted versions for both, but as of now only the KH4 one has CWM recovery. In addition, Samsung has released the source code for the KH4, but I'm yet to find the source code for the KI1. I'l like to develop for the KI1, but without a source code and CWM recovery for the kernel, efforts are limited. So I appeal to anyone who knows where we can get the source code for KI1 or can help get CWM on the KI1, please respond!
Mods
So far I've deodexed my phone running on KI1 and managed to get the battery percentage mod on it using the UOT. That one's pretty simple. This weekend I hope to try some more mods like the Advance Power Menu, for one. Once I get that done, I'll share on xda. Appreciate suggestions on what mod we can apply that's useful, but too complicated. If anyone manage to produce mods for your I9100G, appreciate if you could share.
Hopefully once we have a few mods done for the I9100G, we can consolidate them into a custom ROM for our phone.
Let's work together to make our phone better!
I would like to join with little experience on android .
I understand our target is to make custom Rom for the g model, but do you think its we can make it possible to flash other i9100 custom roms with sgx 540 processor ?
Can we have a list of things to start with to acheive that?
Btw, i tried deodexeding and i didn't success. Any advice on this .
Thanks

Hi ss219100g,
We can't flash I9100 custom ROMs into the I9100G. I tried flashing VillainRom onto mine, but I couldn't make it work. Needs someone with more knowledge and experience, I suppose. All I can try right now is try to apply various modes I pick up from xda onto my phone.
So far I've managed to apply the Battery percentage and Advanced Power Menu mods. I'll share them later today. I'm still looking around for the next thing to try. Any suggestions?
For deodexing, I used xUltimate. The link's here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
Basically, I copied the contents of /system/app and /system/framework to \origi_frame\ and \origi_app\, run the tool, then copied the results back onto the phone. Remember to delete the *.odex files in the phone.
hi, i one of the new sgs2g user.
i would like to join and hoping if we could ever make some custom rom for this version.
but i still noob bout android, and this is my first android phone.
i was able to root my dzki1 kernel, using insecure kernel and abd command, but unable to flash cwm recovery, is there way to flash it?
and other thing, what is deodex and odex? i try google, but could not understand

i did and that's normal, you get a yellow triangle because you installed an unofficial (insecure) rom or kernel, don't worry about it, it doesn't affect the stability of your phone in any way, it's just for saying that you have intalled a custom feature (rom or kernel)!

Kernels

Are there any kernels that work with this? I recall people mentioning them, but there aren't any threads for abg.

as of now, I could only find the stock and aarrrrgh's kernel. bytecode is for AOSP ROMs only (4.2.2 and above).
not really sure why you would need another kernel, stock and aarrrgh's reportedly qork quite well.

only reason i want a different kernel is for graphical performance. i know overclocking really has no effect on this with our device (or at least very little) but lately ive been having issues with games running poorly and stuttering. ive only noticed these after installing Rootbox and then not liking it so flashed back to stock then back to Eclipse.
i know someone is going to say that any changes made when installing a rom will be overwritten when you flash to another, and even better back to stock, but since having flashed Rootbox just once my phone has been freaking out and i have wiped wiped wiped wiped wiped wiped and returned to stock idk how many times and its still not right. nobody seems to have any answer or even a response to this issue.
im not blaming Rootbox, but it is pretty coincidental that these issues have sprung up and originated only after i used it.
sorry to thread-jack. anyway, would bytecode work on Eclipse? or is that just CM10.1?

When software needs the hardware to do anything, it sends a request to the kernel. Yes it can improve battery life.

No prob. Take in mind that custom kernels can handle tasks differently and may be better on battery life. Just depends on how its coded. If you flash a custom kernel make sure to do a backup of your current ROM beforehand so you can revert back if you don't like custom kernel. Happy flashing!
