Does anyone have any websites that they would like to recommend regarding info on ROM cooking?
I really like the idea of being able to totally customize our phones once the root is done but would like to try to have something done by the time our Dev team gets root to us. If this is possible and we won't be needing much from the phone before it is rooted (device specific files that we don't have access to now?) to put a ROM together then I am ready to get started.
If you're already working on this I'll be more than happy to help you out with some guidance.
this is someting you just have to learn it's preaty much doing a system dump of a current working rom. but it's more complicated than replace this file and that file as i spoke before. thta was just a gereral idea.
real rom cookers manipulate the kernal so thier ideas work better and faster than the original. just take a look at my friend cyanogen he's done wonders in rom cooking. i think haykuro and old dev from xda has a rom kitchen tut out there in the intertubes but have lost touch with him.

Very True...I do my own ROMS for myself and a few friends with my Xperia WinMo....its all about performance and how you put it together...
I've played around with rom cooking for my Omnia last year. It is pretty involved. This site and MoDoCo are some of the best places to find information on. I would suggest looking at the Hero forums and other Android phones as I would think some of the specifics are different than say WinMo.
Any way, I plan on reading up on this myself, so if I come across any good info I'll post it here.
i've got a rom done when we get root. just took out all the apps and replaced them with stock android, but its better than nothing for now. we'll still need to get amon-ra recovery and stuff working.
Is anybody thinking about making a Nexus One ROM for the Eris once we get root

A 2.1 ROM or a Nexus One themed ROM?
I'm sure someone will do 2.1 but I'm sure Nexus One stuff (startup animations etc) could just be added to any other ROM with minimal work after we get this thing rooted.
from what ive been reading..and surely hope its true, alot of Chefs are looking to port of specifically Espresso and Nexus themed roms.
and that to me is just freakin awesome.
but all jokes aside..i just wanna metamorph and go nuts with the themes lol
I noticed that the guys in the evo section have a dev/test only 2.3 rom compiled from reverse engineering off the 2.3 sdk. They have already got most of the functions to work, all a bit buggy but cool all the same. I was wondering if I were to flash a evo rom onto my DHD and it didnt work would I still be able to use clockworkmod and reflash my nand backup off sc card?
Or am I just crazy to even think of trying?

I also noticed while rooting/updating my mates Sony Ericsson X10 that there is a sdk dump of 2.3 available. Doesnt really work but still nice to check it out
Anyone willing to do a sdk dump or point me in the direction of how to do it
Ok i attempted to flash the evo 2.3 rom on my DHD.
Didnt work, guess it is because wrong kernal.
Am I the only person who would like to see a skd port of 2.3?
Just to check out, obviously would not run well enough to use as daily rom.
If any1 can point me in the right direction I would love to learn how to port/compile over from a sdk.
I'm as eager as you are! I want a tasty gingerbread
But i'd suggest you wait until a rom is released SPECIFICALLY for your phone...jumping ahead can result in great losses...i'm sure you don't want a £450 paperweight
And trust me, time will fly, before you know it some smart XDA Chef will have released an optimised rom just for our shiny Desire HDs!

I strongly suggest that you don't do this roms must be device specific

I just rooted my Epic, and I need to know, what is the best, most stable Froyo rom out?
Sent from my Epic 4G
they're all awesome.
They are all (mostly) stable.
Try one on and see how it fits.
If you don't like it, flash another. It's not too terribly addicting.
It all depends on what you are looking for. Me personally I like the Frankenstein rom but I had radio issues and switched to the midnight rom and it runs very well.

Why do questions like this even get asked? If there were ROMs that were inferior in every way, such that preference had no bearing... they wouldn't be on the first page or two of the forum.
You are going to have a favorite. Go start trying stuff like everyone else did.
Like I've said a million times that this question was asked. What works for others might not work for you. Flash to you find one you like
Sent From Da Hood.
When I first started flashing I had the same questions and it is nice to be pushed in the right direction. Which gain it is all personal preference. Some roms run better than others but then some roms have the theming that some people are looking for. So my suggestion is read through some of them and the change logs look at some of the screenshots in the threads and flash it if you like what you see. Once you have flashed a couple times you won't hesitate to do it again and again and again to try the different ones there are. I think I have tried 7 or 8 different roms on my epic and 7 or 8 when I had my evo and I was constantly switching from one to the next to the next back to one I had previously and so on depending on the updates that had been applied and the different changes that were made. So try them all then go back to what you like. When you have found what you like stick with it until another version comes out with an update try it and see if you like it. It does get a little bit addicting. It is very hard to brick an epic because of the capabilities of flashing back using odin. So don't hesitate in flashing as many as you like.
Thanks everyone, I'll start trying some tonight.
Edit: ok I found one that looks promising but I have no idea how these modem things work. I never had to do that to install roms on my hero. Anyway, how do I install a modem?

Follow instructions and you should be good. You can install other roms after this if you like.
Which method did you use to get to froyo?
I really hate to advertise, but I feel the need I guess... Frankenstein FROYO is going to come out tomorrow night, its about 94mb zipped right now and solid,I'm still working to make it even smaller, stay tuned...

I'd be interested to see how different it is. I liked your last version for the most part, but boot up time was way too long. Would be nice to see the additional apps/add-ons included so they don't have to be installed individually (or maybe provide them as a pack somehow?) In general, it's a great ROM though.

I would avoid odin as much as possible just my opinion, i would much rather flash the dk28 modem with the flashable zip and noobnls stock dk28 rom first:

I saw Bravo XC2 or whatever is released.
What exactly does this allow us Bravo users to do, if rooted? Can we flash Cyanogen or anything like that? Or Gingerbread? Or is this just the start of the ROM journey?

BravoX is deodexed so it lets you flash any themes made like heydabop's or jrgov's dx theme.
it also has all the bloatware removed which gets rid of all the att junk and vlingo and voice commander (google voice search is the best by far)
the 2nd part of your question seems more geared towards my custom recovery app. using it, someone could port gingerbread or cyangenmod, yes, but no one has yet so the immediate answer is no, you wont be able to flash cm7 at the moment. I may look into the defy port but I dont know yet.
If i missed anything feel free to chime in everyone.
So does that mean we will only be able to put the CM7 only after people have developed a motorola bravo version?
We don't know how Defy CM7 acts on a Bravo yet, but knowing that could be a launching point for a CM7 Bravo port. I don't think anyone is actively working on a Bravo CM7, but I don't spend much time on the CM boards...
I know that BandroidX has made a great ROM but does anyone know if someone tried to port CM7 to the Bravo yet?
Do NOT flash your hero phone with 3rd party ROMs unless necessary. I have played with many kinds of ROMs for 1 year. Most of them are downright laggy, unstable, or battery-draining although you could have some new features. These Roms are not fully tested. Some of them even contain spyware... You normally need to wipe your phone for most 3rd party ROM updates and that means you need to re-configure your phone again and again.. Now, I got my stock ROM back after making a Gold-card and I'm very satisfied with my HTC stock ROM. This is a fast, stable, power-saving and fully-tested ROM. Upgrade is very smooth and not painful.
I would suggest you to flash your phone by RUU and then root it by some tools, e.g. http://www.unlockroot.com/. But, please keep an eye on the install procedure. Do not install unnecessary apps unless you want.
The above is only my personal experience. Hope it helps.

You must have been loading up some really bad ROMs if that was your experience. What kind of spyware have you even seen installed in ROMs? Each to their own.

Yeah, if it wasn't for custom roms I would've gotten myself a new phone ages ago. If you want a bugless Rom you just flash a fully tested Rom, if goin want to try something new flash a new Rom. I've never heard about spyware either.
sent with love from me to you
My used ROMs include Crons, CM, Villian and some others that I can't remember. At present, I don't think there is any spyware in Crons, CM, Villian. Crons, CM, Villian are generally recognised as good 3rd pary ROMs. However, I don't think any of them is more stable or faster than stock ROMs.
I found some spywares installed as system apps in some Chinese ROMs disributed from hiapk.com and bbs.anzhi.com.. These are individual-maintained ROMs.
To my understanding, if an app requires extra permissions than what it actually needs, then that could be a spyware.
I'm not a professional mobile device developer. What I need is a rooted ROM that is bugless, does it job well and therefore suitable for everyday use.

Well, New features are very likely to require more computational resource. If you had a machine for win98, and you wanted to try Win7 with that, then I would suggest you not to do it.. HTC Hero is extacly that win98 Machine.

@gnubot, which stock ROM did u flashed?
Now I use a repack of the oficial OTA 2.1-update1,flashed it and i get some Force Close errors(like com.htc.bgp etc).
I tried VillainROM v12 and v13 and i was stuck on the load-screen (i think it is the Sense app that is stuck on).
I saw that @dastin1015 uploaded his Zero Hero Sense 3.5 ROM, looks nice and I would like to try it, but I have some doubts about some bugs. Also, i searched the forum, and couldn't find any info on how to downgrade to 2.1 (if something goes wrong). I can't post a question under the Developer forum (as a new forum user).
Any instructions or help for me(a new android user).
Thanks,

Bharat has a new RC version of dastin315's rom. Its at the bottom of the thread. Maybe that'll help?
As for 2.1, you could flash an official 2.1 RUU and then root afterwards.

I'm a custom rom addict, rarely do I have a rom for more than 2 months before looking for something which more/better features. Sure there's some laggy roms out there, most of which are still in beta so you can't expect them to be "perfect" Roms. That said, there's plenty of excellent roms being worked on by some very clever and creative people, that go above and beyond the features stock roms offer. Get them from trusted sites/developers and you'll enjoy the experience

The fact is that some Sense lovers are tired of laggy new sense ports I guess
Therefore, a stock android ROM is not a choice.
So, in a way, I must admit that gnubot is right.
But we can't deny that the work that JieeHD, dastin1015, elelinux and other devs did is pretty awesome!
And to finish, I don't really remember how many months HTC devs took to make a correct release of the new Sense...

That is SO correct!!
I've tried non-Sense roms, they're great and fast and stable and good-looking, but not for me... i don't feel comfortable with them.
I even have got back to generic 1.5. So getting back to stock is not a solution.
At this moment, i have Wildheroc RoseV5, it's sense and it's GB.
I'm waiting for the Zero Hero Sense 3.5 to be "stable" and i'll flash it
I just had to post in this thread because of the title. It's pretty ridiculous that you'd create a topic on this site as bline007 said and not somewhere else. Especially using that topic title? You didn't really expect that anyone would agree with you I hope. For your sake I can only assume you meant to say "Be careful I've found some 3rd party roms with spyware" or the like.
P.S. I apologize for the flameish response but I feel a lot of patronage for this site and it's members because of the work massive amount of work and personal time they have spent to make my 'legacy' phone go out of it's comfort zone just to bring us features, options and a longevity we never expected from this phone. So please don't taint the hard work of the developers by making posts with titles as such.
