People should be warned before rooting HTC M8 - One (M8) General

Hello,
I've been using Galaxy s3 for and recently moved to HTC M8.
I rooted device and unlocked the bootloader to be able to make few things however I've never predicted that unlocking bootloader is (almost) one way ride.
HTC made a life really difficult and If I knew that it will be a hassle to unroot/lock the bootloader (+removing modified flag) then I would think twice before rooting.
I think it would be good to make this post sticky so people should clearly be made aware of what will happen when they root.

You're coming from a Samsung device, where they don't even allow you to take an OTA EVER AGAIN after rooting, and you're complaining about HTC??

its down to the user themselves, yes it has an element of risk and we see so many people messing up their phones as they didn't read the necessary info prior to unlocking/rooting. Also yes, rooting a sammy is a piece of piss compared to HTC in certain respects, but the resources are here and providing people embrace the resources on offer they shouldn't have any issues
whilst the above statement agrees with you somewhat, this is a pretty useless thread and goes completely against what xda is here for
to sum up,
1, people who are not prepared to do the above, should not think about tampering with thier device
2, thread reported as it serves as much use as a chocolate tea pot, you are defo trolling and inflatable dart boards have served much more use than this.:laugh:

and you post this at XDA.....the mother of root and customising phones ?
All the things you do to your own phone is at own risk ! You know what the real solution is ....
READ until you actually know what you are getting in to ! if you don't know the terms and conditions than this is not the place to be !

I clearly understand risk of rooting (bricking device etc) but it would be really easy to tell people that if Sunshine will not work rooting will be just one way ticket!
That's it -as simple as that.

You can change the tampered text, set s-off status text to On and yet have the s-off, so that it doesn't cause problems for warranty purposes...

lets not get into details here. I wanted to pass the message to other users.

Set your m8 s-off and you're able to remove tampered **** with a simple adb command the Same simple a Bit different adb command is for lock your device so read the therms and the instructions ??

providing the user keeps a backup available of thier original rom, returning to stock will never be an issue. the firmware cant be changed as the CID cant be changed
yes warranty is buggered but that's defo the case with samsung devices also. I have a galaxy tab s 10.5 and there's nothing on that particular forum that i could root with without tripping the knox counter
basically if anyone is going to go into rooting without reading what people have been kind enough to compile and do things properly then sorry "we told them so!!" several hundred times actually
oh I just realised......
THERE ARE THESE WARNINGS IN PRETTY MUCH EVERY ROM/ROOTING THREAD IN CAPITALS JUST LIKE THESE

passing what message ? that you have to read instead of getting warned....hold on mate its not kindergarten here ?! hahaha
thread is reported already.....let's hold on for the verdict. I had my say.
all the best

There is very little actual information in this post, and I disagree that it should be made sticky.
You were provided ample warning from HTC when unlocking the bootloader. Regardless, any such mods should never be taken for granted and should always be preceded with thorough research.
If you bothered to research current Samsung devices, you will see that root is truly a one way road. All current and forthcoming Samsung devices have a Knox counter. The Knox counter is an actual physical fuse that is blown when you root, and impossible to change by software.

got the "must read" point across so maybe some use for this thread haha !!

Wm 6.1 Thought?

This may be a really idiotic question but in my mind it really makes sense. But, I only know some basic things about programming and things of that nature, and not to much about ROM's. But anyway, here goes.
I called Htc earlier today, as I do every week to see if there was any new news on a release date for the very , very elusive Official Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade for my Htc Touch/Vougue, from Alltel. Knowing that Alltel is usually one of the last carriers to get things done,
I tried to get a release date from him with no prevail. But he mentioned that Wm6.1 had already been released in a few other countries(Im in the US), which Im sure quite a few of you knew, but I did not. I had actually never heard this, or read about it here, so I called back and brought it up to another tech and he said the same thing, so I am assuming it's true. If they have misled me , then I'm extremely sorry for the waste of space.
Now I dont know what countries he's talking about, no clue actually ,but heres my thought. If it has already been released in an official form from some overseas cell provider, why couldn't someone download the ROM, and somehow add language support for other countries? Couldn't they just remove the Radio portion of the ROM and release an actual wm6.1 ROM.
Now, like I said , I know nothing or ROM's other than what Ive read here over the past few months, and only what little Ive understood of that. But there are Wm6.1 threads everywhere , of people wanting a stock/orig version, so this just crossed my mind. Maybe that where these custom 6.1 roms on here come from? Im not sure. But its just a thought. Anyone care to correct me or comment? Dont be harsh though, I seriously didn't know if this was possible, and thought if it was, why hasnt it been done. Thanks guys.
oh my god. Curious George.. no comment?

i think wm6.1 roms are available here for a long time..
It's been realesed in various countries outside of the US most likely because of a higher demand, and HTC operates from Taiwan. The update itself is per carrier and country.
Try the "Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking" section, or the section dedicated to your phone, and you might find what your looking for.
I too am suprised to see curious george hasn't told you to stop thinking, maybe he's been kidnapped or something?

"i have a PPC, how do i turn it on?"

Excellent question! Can we get a Sticky or maybe add this to G.W.E.N.I.???
i don't think we need a sticky on it here's the answer:
you go peeing, and if it doesn't turn on when you're back, you should give up and buy a symbian based phone.

Isn't that a phone for monkeys?
(Maybe we SHOULD sticky this, ehehehehe! )
as it seems... the monkey is dealing with that phone very well
(he probably installed an HTC WM6.1 Official ROM on it himself)
but Dr.Puttingham, you're posing a new and serious question which i will search google for straight away.
"do monkeys pee?"
i will edit this post later with the answer.
(also, i suggest creating an archive with all questions which are too stupid to be asked. before posting every member has to read the whole list and then post a question, if he/she didn't follow the rules he/she will be accused of murder)
put this on the front cover of the archive:

yeah, the eula thing would be so funny, make it some crap like
"its ok to ask if windows mobile 9 can be ported to the sony ericsson k750"
then have options of i agree or this is total crap... then people will by default click i agree, and it should say something like well you cant join then and ip-block them

but...
To all you dream devs I love your work, and just want to say thanx.
Also, How many of you, other than CM, are moving on to development for the Nexus?
And will I be able to flash roms like Super- D, and WG- Y on the Nexus?
Or are they Dream roms only?

Maybe you should look at what happened to the PRI upgrade bounty in the Development section. I agree with the OP of that thread - bounties should be banned from XDA.

My humble opinion I would have to agree with silver. Bounties tend to cloud the focus of the overall objective and could lead to somewhat shady end results. In this case of froyo root believe me the devs have this as a top priority and bounties are not going to achieve a faster result. It would probably be best if one would donate to them now as it could lighten the load and burden now when it really counts.
This is counterproductive as much as you think your helping. Pretty soon nothing around here is ganna get done without a bounty, and the whole development thread is ganna be slowed to a halt with devs waiting for a bounty before they do any work. Plus Android isnt owned by anyone of us to claim a bounty for developing on, if you wanna make money through it, there are channels like through the market. Donations are for Churches/Charities so what you are basically doing is bribing people to do the work.

That was only one of a few root bounty threads. I personally completely derailed one of them (I'm not proud of myself) trying to make the same points that others have made in this thread, but they were much more eloquent here than I was there. Ya and what was that? The PRI fix? The whole point of rooting is to achieve the best possible tweak of code that gives us the best possible Android experience overall. The only logical step forward is to root froyo. If nothing more it might contain the ingredients for us to eventually root Gingerbread when we get it. Believe me rooting froyo is a top priority.

The unrevoked twitter feed hinted they were working on it this morning.
"You can expect another face on the wall of phones soon. 2.2 folks: stuff is coming
down the pipeline. Inc folks: use Forever before the OTA!"

If you want the unRevoked team to work on this and you want to help them out, then go to their site and donate to the EFF. If you really want to show your support, then donate NOW, not after they then find the hack. Anyone can donate AFTER but only those truly serious will show their support now. So go to their page and show you are serious and show your support.

Exactly. Unrevoked is the only one I've seen even hint towards it. I think, most of the hardcore devs got their device when it came out and have had root since 2.1, aren't willing to loose root and therefor development time for other projects, and probably don't want to spend a few hundred bucks to buy a cold unit out of contract to test with.
My suggestion: all you bounty guys chip in your milk money together, start buying devices and giving them as gifts of gratitude towards your favorite devs. Devs do this for fun on their own time and surely wouldn't mind having their name on the end-all-be-all-2.2-exploit, but probably don't want it bad enough to go blow a few hundred bucks on. My $0.02 anyway...

Well duh. You are talking to the wrong group. You need to talk to the hackers.

No... it wasnt the PRI fix and thanks for confirming what I said. The 2.2 root has not been being worked on, at least according to the only devs that have spoken up. They dont consider it important, their words, not mine.

The whole challenge for a hacker is too hack something that has not been hacked. Pardon me but the last I heard 2.1 was hacked and now the PRI is fixed. Ya I confirmed that much...your welcome. Hackers don't go around babbling about what they are doing until they achieve it then make their mark.

HTC G1 very dead!

Hi team!
I have a big problem!
I have a HTC Dream (aka HTC G1) where i has updated with root today.
Once update my device, i decided update a SPL Haykuro: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3816278&postcount=3
I has downloaded this files:
Latest Radio
2.22.19.26I
Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
Latest SPL
1.33.2005
MUST FLASH RADIO FIRST.

According to the manual, should be updated first radio and then the SPL ... Silly me ... I first updated the SPL by accident ...
Now, my htc will not turn on....
I can not enter the bootloader or fastboot....
Is stop in T-Mobile G1:

Any solution?
Solution: jtag
and by any chance isnt that a Rogers or something other boarded that needs other radio than "ordinary" G1s?
well probably it is ****ed anyway, would be a bit more hassle to give it rebirth via jtag.
sorry for your loss
but.... is only solution??
thanx..
If you can't get into fastboot or recovery then your only option is jtag. Or use it as a paperweight. Or a battery charger for a replacement g1. Or sell it for parts
Firstly WRONG SECTION!
There seems to be this beast creeping back in around here of misposting in incorrect sections. Please read the rules.
As for the phone as already displayed if you can't follow simple instruction you deserve what you get, next time instead of thinking you know better than those that have done this a thousand times before you when you get a new phone you will....
...Learn to follow SIMPLE instructions.
Let this be a lesson to others who think 'They know best'. 99% of all problems on this site could be easily solved if only people would learn to read, Understand, and follow simple instructions!
Besides the extremely rude reply above me, here's a link that will probably help you if you have decent computer skills:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649431
It's got some pretty good resources for JTAGing which looks to be your only option.

Rude? No.
Truthful? Yes.
How long has this phone been out? How many threads/posts can you find on a Google search alone regarding flashing Danger SPL and the pitfalls of doing it incorrectly? How many thousands of tutorials/info pages are there explaining the correct procedure?
And yet STILL people brick there phones because they can't follow very simple and very basic rules and instructions. I'm sorry if I don't sugar coat my replies and be all ' Aawwww poor diddums did you break your phone, thats awful! Poor you ' and be all sweetness and light but sometimes people just need telling and telling straight.
And if the "offending" post helps ONE person sit up and think about what they are doing before they do it and saves them bricking there phones rather than switching off reading the usual replies of 'Poor you' and thinking to themselves 'Won't happen to me' then my replies will always be blunt and to the point on this subject.
It's not to offend, abuse or to be rude to anyone, its just a simple truth.

Even worse: how many people decline to flash radio and/or SPL using fastboot, even if the risk of bricking the phone is much reduced?

Staggeringly high unfortunately, all because they can't be bothered setting up the sdk. The mind as they say boggles....
Edit: Oh and just a case in point of how stupidly easy and transferable it is. I setup sdk for G1 using sdk r04 (about two years ago! Yes its been that long lol) and STILL today on my N1 it works perfecly only thing I updated was the N1 usb drivers. Thats the beauty of it, when its setup thats it for pretty much your android phone history for the average user!

Well, that REALLY WAS stupid of you. As has been mentioned, jtag is your only option.
Next time, don't do stupid things. 1.33.2005 SHOULD NEVER BE USED. There is no point, nothing to gain. What is the purpose of taking a risk when there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to gain from it?
FYI: "haykuro" was a HACK. Following his BRAINDEAD ideas resulted in HUNDREDS of devices being destroyed beyond PRACTICAL repair.
i was one of those not listening or reading people. I am glad for the straight forward way you tell it. following the advice you gave me around a year or more ago has saved my ass on more than one occasion with the g1. making me sit back and not rush it,while thinking "WWS31D"lol
There is a reason why step-by-step instuctions are in the order they are in, imagine building a house by starting with the roof, and then wonder why it came crashing down, because there wasn't even a foundation yet
Is there really any reason to tell someone to jtag a dream/g1 at this point in the device life cycle? A jtag arm program/debuger is going to run about 50 bucks, and you are going to have to buy/make a logic level converter since the g1 dosen't like ttl logic levels. On top of that, the person is going to have to use openocd wich dosen't come as a binary (or maybe there are bins for windows but I haven't really looked) so have fun with that. But the most important point, if they failed to follow the instructions and bricked their phone in the first place are they really going to be able to follow the jtag instructions?
TL;DR you made your self a brick. Go sell it on e-bay for parts.

Some (very few) people have more hardware knowledge than software and might have the parts laying around. Or they might have friends with these skills.
They asked for a solution for the problem, jtag will fix it. But most people arent able to because of lack of skill/tools/experience. so being told to jtag it to most people means your screwed, sell for parts.

Totally agreed! Just did the samething yesterday and I had been reading the preaching on fastboot all along and like everyone else thinking (Nah! It an't going to happens to me, I won't brick my phone) Long on behold, I just did. Bricked my only phone!
I totally see where you are coming from but...
If it were me and I made the OP, the last thing I would want after ruining my phone that I paid money for is people rubbing it in my face of my stupidity and idiocy. Rather than pointing out the obvious mistake that he already knew that he made, I thought it would be much more helpful to come up with a possible solution rather criticize his intelligence.
That's pretty much all I have to say. Have a good day/night

I agreed with you definately rubbing/bashing on someone when they screwed up (just like I did the other day) is not helping. *** no pun intended to anyone here*** In this case the only solution (for now, to my understanding) is to jtag the phone. And many are too scare (including me) in doing it. And having someone else doing it for a fee. Well, paying for jtag, I might as well using that money toward a new phone.

Some of the instructions

On here are about as clear as mud.
I can say thanks for the hard work you guys put in but you really need to stop assuming that everyone is programing at degree level.
After 4 broken mouse a broken cup and 4 sleepless nights I'm giving up trying to root the wildfire..
I don't even want the thing in this house anymore!
That's funny I followed them twice with no complications at all and I knew nothing about Android and have basic computer skills, don't blame the guides here for your own incompetence. Those guides have helped hundreds/thousands of people to gain root, if you're having problems why not ask like everyone else does, though I doubt you'll get much help now.

Maybe you just don't have enough patience and willingness to put time and effort into your phone. I rooted my wildfire the second day I got it, no problems at all.
PS: epic ragequit bro. A broken mouse and a mug. Over an android phone.

When I rooted mine I had zero knowlege of Android past "this app looks neat" and I did it in an hour or two (didn't get much sleep that night. too much new stuff to install)
But seriously, if you just use a third party tool like Revolutonary, it's as easy as pie.
Download tool->plugin phone->install drivers (if necesary)->run tool->follow simple onscreen instructions

I just think folk could be a bit clearer at times and then when your not having success further in the post someone chimes in with another 'even easier' solution lol, well so they say so your away again and suprise it doesn't work or something isn't clear so you go back and aw well the loop continues until you litteraly break!
I give up the phones old hat now anyway!
Relax A Minute!
@Tevion74
I can understand where you are coming from, before I bought my Wildfire I had never even used any PC Linux Distros (distributions) and had a lot of reading up to do, but the main thing I had to remember is this:
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON LEARNING
whenever I had a problem rooting or now when I am trying to do something with my wildfire - I will not just dive straight in, research what you want to know IN DETAIL
and then if I am still in doubt, I will ask one of the great devs on here, such as Scratch0805, Heavy_Metal_Man, Sympnotic and Arco68 and Hacktrix2006 - but there as so many that I can not name all the people that have helped our friend Willy Wildfire progress to where its at!
My point is, dont just try and do it if you can't, RESEARCH, and if need be - ask for help.
There is always people on XDA willing to give help to those that ask and don't tant.
Dev? Me? Far from it mate, I have no knowledge of Linux based systems at all, well except what I've learnt here, it has all come from reading guides on xda.
I struggle to understand when erwinp, sympnotic start talking in the cm9 thread.
I think of myself more an advanced user who's not afraid to have a go.
To the op if you post your problem in the thread of the guide your trying to follow we'll try to help you and figure out where your going wrong.

You just need to understand that this is a forum. If a member of a forum has a problem, he can post about it and other members can help him solve it. That's how forums work
I'm 100% sure if you posted about your issue in the relevant thread, you would've gotten a solution in 2 hours, if not less.

agreed. im sorry if my reply seems harsh (my hasty responses can be) it just frustrates me when people come with grievances and seem to have not asked for help on the matter. if you had asked for help, read the threads and still couldnt get the help you wanted then i would understand. (we have all been there before). our members try there best when righting guides to make them as user friendly as possible. we all need to start somewhere and alot of us come here with little or no knowledge of linux or android. if we can do it you can do it. these things just take time and paitence.

Look ya muppet, if you read the guides as carefully as you read my posts I'm not surprised you can't get root. Me and you both seem to have a bit of an attitude so let's just leave it.
Yes we kind of clashed the first couple of posts I get that and offer my apologies, it just p's me off when people throw a fit and blame others because its themselves that can't follow a simple step by step guide correctly. This forum is what it is because of people asking questions and others answering them. I'm offering to help you as that's why we're here and I know other people will too so just chill out, Buy yourself a new mug then have a cuppa tea n we'll try to start again and get you up n running!

I purchased my wildfire in South Africa and to gain root i couldnt use the regular way, i researched day and night, by the way this is my first android phone, i knew nothing what so ever about what i was doing but because i just applied myself into the task, the day i decided to finally root, it took me less than an hour. but now im fairly competent in fixing this and that on a rom, so shoot your questions, we will answer..........this is XDA, we can do anything.
Ok thread cleaned and closed.
To make things clear here.
XDA is a developer forum and not everyone's personal tech support.
Mostly everyone in here tries and reads the guides and the wealth of information included for their own benefit.
If you dont like the current guides then by all means make your own and offer something back to the community.
