[Q] Why do I have Terrible Audio? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On about 50% of calls, I hear terrible audio! (But when I call people, they can hear me perfectly good through the mic). I don't think it is an issue with cell reception, because sometimes quality is poor no matter if bars are high or low. The other 50% of calls sound great. My sister has no issues with her SGS5.
I tried factory resetting my phone, but still the problem persists. I'm in the USA and I have the SGS5 international version, so I wasn't able to get a warranty.
Here is an audio clip of what calls sound like:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxuJib1Gmx3_SkpHWS01YjQzNEU/view?usp=sharing

Thinking back about it now, I don't remember having this issue when I first got my phone, and I did do some modifications to my phone since then.
I had rooted my phone.
The original firmware installed was G900FXXU1ANE2.
Downloaded the original firmware from sammobile.com and flashed it to my phone to unroot it.
Factory reset the phone.
So maybe there is a problem with the firmware? I reflashed the firmware a couple times. I'm going to try flashing an earlier firmware version and see if it makes a difference.

Flashing an earlier firmware didn't help. After doing further tests, I think the issue may be only happening with connections to GSM towers. Very difficult to discover the cause with this issue since it's hard to reproduce.

Have you tried turning off noise cancellation? This bubbling sound on the receiving side might have to do with processing by the Audience chip.

No Sound - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4

Tried searching the threads but didn't find anyone with the same problem. But for some reason sound stopped coming out of my phone. When I say sound, I mean if I try to play any music, use speakerphone, videos, alarms, keypad tones, etc. No sound will come out of my phone. I can make a call using the phone but when I try to use speakerphone nothing comes out. I can hear someone when I'm talking to them on the phone and they can hear me fine and earphones also work fine.
I tried Odin back to stock, then doing a factory reset and even with the factory reset I still don't hear anything when the AT&T logo plays when the phone is turned on.
Any ideas or suggestions? It was working fine this afternoon then for some reason all of a sudden stopped. I'm not sure if I placed my phone in my glove compartment too hard or if I did something else that maybe dislodged an internal cable or something.
Any help would be appreciated.
Looks like you may have a physical problem with the phone. The main speaker is dead somehow. That speaker does music, alert noises, etc, while a separate speaker does your in call audio (directly to your ear so the call is private..). This happened to me once on my iPhone4 where a tiny tiny tiny tab of glass cleaner got into the headset when I was cleaning it. it dried and sorted itself out within a day. If that's the case with yours try drying it out. If not, then you may have to submit it to Samsung or your carrier for warranty.

Thanks for the reply, WoodburyMan. I'm thinking my phone might be experiencing a "supernatural" problem. For one reason or another my alarm went off this morning and everything started to work fine. Although there were some syncing issues with my Gmail. Who knows, last night when all this happened, my battery was at 50%. Maybe it needed a charge or just a night to "sleep off" its issues. In any case, it seems to be working fine for the time being. Hopefully it stays that way.
i was having a similar problem and don't know what is going on. All my sounds work and for some reason when i silence my phone and try and turn the sound back on EVERY sound works EXCEPT for my Media. like notifications, bleeps , etc all work but i can't hear music at all and i can't unmute it. ive tried a whole bunch of stuff and did a reset and nothing yet. As soon as i restart the phone, then the media sound wrks again.. any ideas?

Ear speaker not Working in Galaxy S4.SOLUTION FINALLY FOUND
I hadthis problem for a lot of time...when i was on the phone with a call instantly the sound was off...the loud speaker and the headphones and bluetooth were ok but the ear speaker was off. Firstly i thought that the cause of the problem was the fact the i have rooted my phone...i change a lot of roms... and some times the ear speaker was starting to work but then the same think instantly went down...i unrooted my phone but the problem was still there.... I TRY also the function *#0*# and when i push the botton of the "reciever" some times was working some times not..... when i was playing on this one time i push hard on the screen and has start to work again,.... Then i thought that the time to open the device has come.... Some youtube help on how to disassebly a galaxy s4 and i found the connector for the ear speaker...... i cleaned it... i used the hair dryer and the a connector spray for mantainence and the problem was fixed....I have seen after 2 days reaserch on the net that many people with a galaxy s4 have this problem.... in my opinion is a matter of humidity in this connector.... after hairdrying and a connector spray my phone was fixed... No need to send it back to samsung ....and pay money..because its rooted..(my knox counter is still 0x1 ) .
That was all falks .. hope to help somebody... its very easy to fix this problem once you understand the cause of it!!!

Sort of the same problem with s4 i337m
I recently flashed CyanogenMod on my S4 and now I have no volume at all. Anywhere. I also can't play videos of any kind. Snapchat, youtube, or web videos. I also get no volume with ringer and in call. I have tried flashing different ROM's and the problem persists. Any idea what the problem might be?
Maybe its the earpiece flex problem

I recently got an S4 i337, it was on 4.4.2. I wanted to root and unlock it so i downgraded it to 4.3 using two files from some other thread:
AP_I337UCUEMK2_1921628_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_C ERT.tar.md5
JFLTE_USA_ATT_16G.pit
Phone flashed fine to 4.3, then i had to change modem to USUAMDL. Used saferoot to root and regionlock away to unlock. Long story short after spending two days i was able to root and unlock the phone. I was happy and finally started restoring my data. But i suddenly noticed that there was no sound at all. Now the phone is on mk2 rom and i have no sound whatsoever. When i try to make a call, it hangs. When i try to play some music it says "sorry the player does not support this type of audio file"
I am very frustrated because i have been searching but couldnt find a solution. I cannot flash any other file e.g. mk2 to NB1 or any other MDL rom through odin. I used *#0*# to get to the hardware menu and tested speaker but it doesnt do anything. I still think its a software problem because phone is not able to make any calls either or play music files and hangs. I would greatly appreciate help.

I'm having the same problem after downgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.3 in order to root. The problem with the music not being able to play is very frustrating but not being able to make or receive phone calls is beginning to become a real problem.

Flash the modem back to a newer one. It is known that if you put an old NON-HLOS with the 4.4.2 bootloader that you lose sound.

Isn't the modem the same thing as the baseband? If so I have NC1 as my modem and can't find a newer one.
I have a similar problem with my speaker...
I've tried to replace phisical speaker and daughterboard... But still not work...
When in Android will played a sound (screen lock, music palying, dialing...) on the speaker come out only "tic"s... for the duration of sound... Then speaker will stop... Any ideas?

[Q] Call Quality Issues

Hi everyone,
My S5 came with NI2 already installed. I followed the super easy root process and ever since my call quality has sucked. I have tried enabling the VoLTE and disabling it (on Verizon's web site and phone) and it does not seem to make a difference.
Would re-flashing (using ODIN) the kernel.tar from the root thread help? Does that include the modem? Would re-flashing the entire retail version help? Has anyone done this to fix this issue?
Any thoughts? I have been on T-Mobile for the past ten years and Verizon seems to be a completely different animal. I appreciate any help.
Thank you.

Update: Swapped the phone but still have call quality issues. 2-3 bars, so signal should not be the issue. I have kept the second one stock so far. I cleared the Cache in the stock recovery. I have tried different advance calling features such as privacy mode on/off, noise reduction on/off, personalized sound on/off etc. and every combination in between. Anyone have any other ideas? Verizon is tracking my calls (I dial #832 after each call), the towers I use etc., but so far they are baffled also. I am getting desperate. I am within my return period (1 month for business accounts) but it is too late because they already shipped off the S4 I traded in.
Wow. I was hoping for some suggestions. If I have to live with a verizon phone I think I will take them up on their offer to me. The Droid Turbo is enticing. Fits my needs. Sigh.. I wanted to love the G5. Best screen ever. Always the correct brightness. Sun, rain, whatever.
Call quality is horrendous. I need some input. Please. Robo voice and cut calls with 2 or 3 bars is crap. Any fixes or similar experiences?
I have been having the same problem. Both my wife and I have S5's and the call quality has been terrible lately. I have an iPhone 5c for work and it is much better than either S5. The quality seems to have gotten much worse after enabling Volte. I am going to try disabling it tonight. I am also going to try flashing one of the pre-volte radios if they still work. I have to do my research on this one first. I'm rooted and using Xposed mods but I don't think it is related to the quality issues. I have never been impressed with Samsung's radios and Samsung's call quality but I love their phones and keep coming back to them. Any other ideas anyone?
Well after having the Volte disabled for a few days, the phone seems much better. I am going to try re-enabling it to see if things get worse. It really looks like the Volte is killing my call quality somehow. It's a shame because when I am in a good solid LTE area and I make a true Volte HD call, the quality is awesome. It's when I make a regular call that things start to break up on both ends.
I've never messed with VOLTE, just seems like fluff to me and my call quality has always been outstanding. Have gone thru all update cycles since starting off on NCG. No issues or complaints here at all and I travel in some mighty rural areas

[Q]i9505 periodic no sound and mic problem

Hello,
i've found some threads here with similar problems but they all were a result of wrong baseband used after a custom rom installation.
BUT i bought a i9505 with stock 4.4.2 TW rom UGNG8 (not rooted). At some point i noticed that the phone loses sound and mic completly. Sometimes can take a call but with no sound, neather can the caller hear me, no sound from music/video player and no system sounds eather(not even with headphones plugged in). Everything goes back to normal after a reboot.
I figured it was an outdated baseband so i rooted the device, updated the baseband to the latest (UGNK4) and installed CM12. But the problem is still here. At random times the device loses all sound and only a reboot fixes it
Haven't been able to reproduce the exact moment when it happen as it seem to be completly random (gets really anoying when i need to take an important call and there is no sound )
I could really use some help with this
Cheers,
H.
Rule of thumb: If it happens across multiple roms then it is most probably a hardware issue.
I'd suggest flashing the stock rom back and see if it helps.
Make sure it's the stock rom for the country where the phone was initially bought.
For instance: If the phone was bought from Germany but you're using it in England, it is still a German version of the S4 and therefor needs the German version.

thanks for the reply, i will try the stock firmware, maybe i missed something in the process earlier, and post back the results.
cheers,
H.
Fixed!
ok, after a lot of trial and error i narrowed it down to a hardware issue. The headphone jack was the thing making all the problems. i tried cleaning it but it didnt help, so i removed it. Device works flawless now. Already ordered a new jack. :good:
So to anyone having a similar issue -replacing (or just removing) the headphone jack does the trick.
Cheers,
H.

Poor Quality Calls On Verizon

I have been having an issue with people having trouble hearing me or saying that I am breaking up while on a phone call. This issue started after the latest update which came out about 2 weeks ago. I think it was a security update.
When on a phone call where people are having trouble hearing me, I can either put a headset on or put it through the speaker then the person on the call can hear me normally. I have tried a factory reset, deleting the cache, removing the sim card and put it back in but nothing has fixed my issue.
I do not think that it is a signal problem because of what I said about having no issues if I am using a headset or the speaker phone. Also, I have ruled out a mic problem by taking a video and talking normally then playing the video back. When playing the video back, I can hear myself without a problem (this suggestion was made the Huawei itself).
Does anyone anyone know what is going on? Or is having similar issues? I really don't want to be without a phone if I have to RMA my phone. Huawei's customer service said that they would not send a replacement phone prior to them receiving the RMA (if there is an issue with the phone of course).
I am on the Verizon network. Any suggestions is welcomed. Thank you.
I too am on Verizon and seem to have call quality degraded in the past month. I have no idea why. I live in southern Md.
Same here. Thought it was my case as it started about the same time i got the case. I'm in Central Florida, in a good coverage area. Phone was fine until last update. Now having bluetooth issues and this call issue.
Maybe this is just the noise cancelling mic issue that so many reported when it first came out? I may try to root and turn off the mic as suggested to see if its better, unless one of you guys are rooted and have done that already?
Can I roll back to pre-may update somehow?
yes
I too am
I'm still having the muffled / echo voice issues - putting my finger over the noise cancelling mic seems to "fix" it for me but I'm desperate for a proper fix - otherwise I can see myself jacking in the 6P for another phone soon

Have you tried (or are you) root and disable the noise cancelling mic? Think I may go this route if it continues (which I expect it will)
Unfortunately I use my phone for work, and the software will disable if it detects the phone is rooted - so that's a no go for me.
I had some issues with mine on Verizon. Turning off Enhanced 4G LTE Mode in cellular networks fixed my problems.

Turning on enhanced Lte fixed my call quality issue actually, I had the same breaking up issue with it off. I still have the noise cancellation issue where people can't hear me unless I'm talking right next to the mouth piece though. Did you try wiping your cache partition in the boot up menu?
Wow, no issues for me from the latest update at all. I am in a crappy reception area so needed to turn off enhanced 4g when I got the device about 4 months ago but it's been nothing but great with VZW despite crappy reception.

Using root cloak is an option.
Had issues again last night. Seems when there is any background noise is when the issue presents itself. I'd venture to say this isn't just with VZW. I was able to stop it by placing my finger over the noise cancelling mic on the back of the phone. Guess its time to root and disable it...ugh
See the 800 and counting posts on the Google Help forum. Search "Muffled Voice 6P" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Basically, a bunch of these phones don't work as phones, and Huawei either doesn't want to pay to fix all of them, or more likely, doesn't know how to fix them. The problem with Chinese companies is the same problem Mao had back during the Great Leap Forward. He demanded enough grain to beat Great Britain, the demand was unrealistic so all of his lieutenants made up fictitious yield reports, and they spent all of their budget on farm tools and farm labor, and not enough on train cars to take the grain into town, and a ton of people starved to death as a result! I'm sure something similar to this happened at Huawei: "Boss, the call quality on this 6p is absolutely stupendous". "Well done vice president, here's your bonus". Sales of Huawei 1-2 years later: not up but way, way down. Layoffs. People hungry again...

High pitch sound coming from the earpiece

I have a OnePlus 6T with Oxygen OS 9.0.11, no root.
The phone worked perfectly until yesterday, when I was having a call and suddenly I began hearing a very unpleasant noise coming from the top speaker. Even after the call ended, I could still hear it and even at this time I do it too. It is not by any means loud, I can only hear it when my ear is really close to the speaker, typically when I would place my phone on my ear to take a call. The problem is that it is always there in the background. I must also mention that the phone didn't suffer any physical damage.
The sound itself is not a continuous beep. It interrupts at some times and it sounds like radio interferences or static, but of high pitch. Coil whine is similar to this noise too.
Now, I have tried rebooting the phone and turning wi-fi and mobile data on and off. As soon as the phone powers off, the noise disappears. But immediately after I start it, the sound begins as well, so I thought it may be a hardware issue. But then I played with the camera. When inside the camera app, if I switch to the front camera and place my ear next to the speaker: magic! The noise seems to disappear. If I exit the camera app, however, it returns.
I've already spoken with those at OP support, and after recommending a factory reset they suggested I should send it for inspection. The problem is that I need the device and can't have it away from me for a week.
What do you think? Have you ever heard of issues like this one? Should I downgrade the software to an earlier version?
I have the same problem , and a lot of users of 6t have this problem, i decided not to send it to service center and I stopped paying attention to it

How long have you been noticing it for? Did you also encounter it on earlier versions of the OS?
I don't have any issues with the earpiece. You might try to reboot your phone into the stock recovery and clean the system catch that might help!

Since i bought the phone. I wrote about it with support of oneplus and even with the bug department but nothing in the system did not find, I was instructed to send a phone to the service but not somehow very irritating because you can not hear it when you do not have a phone very close to your ear.

It appears you have a hardware related defect phone so upgrade or downgrade your OS won't help!
Had a similar issue with a Samsung phone once. Hardware fault; warranty service was the only solution.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking too... Though, I don't get why it started doing it so randomly. I've used the phone just fine for one and a half months and it worked perfectly. Now, after no damage whatsoever, this noise appears... strange.
Is the problem solved? I've the same issue with my OnePlus 5T.

No, the problem is still there. However, I can still only hear it when the camera is not active. While in the camera app the noise disappears.
