Tried searching the threads but didn't find anyone with the same problem. But for some reason sound stopped coming out of my phone. When I say sound, I mean if I try to play any music, use speakerphone, videos, alarms, keypad tones, etc. No sound will come out of my phone. I can make a call using the phone but when I try to use speakerphone nothing comes out. I can hear someone when I'm talking to them on the phone and they can hear me fine and earphones also work fine.
I tried Odin back to stock, then doing a factory reset and even with the factory reset I still don't hear anything when the AT&T logo plays when the phone is turned on.
Any ideas or suggestions? It was working fine this afternoon then for some reason all of a sudden stopped. I'm not sure if I placed my phone in my glove compartment too hard or if I did something else that maybe dislodged an internal cable or something.
Any help would be appreciated.
Looks like you may have a physical problem with the phone. The main speaker is dead somehow. That speaker does music, alert noises, etc, while a separate speaker does your in call audio (directly to your ear so the call is private..). This happened to me once on my iPhone4 where a tiny tiny tiny tab of glass cleaner got into the headset when I was cleaning it. it dried and sorted itself out within a day. If that's the case with yours try drying it out. If not, then you may have to submit it to Samsung or your carrier for warranty.

Thanks for the reply, WoodburyMan. I'm thinking my phone might be experiencing a "supernatural" problem. For one reason or another my alarm went off this morning and everything started to work fine. Although there were some syncing issues with my Gmail. Who knows, last night when all this happened, my battery was at 50%. Maybe it needed a charge or just a night to "sleep off" its issues. In any case, it seems to be working fine for the time being. Hopefully it stays that way.
i was having a similar problem and don't know what is going on. All my sounds work and for some reason when i silence my phone and try and turn the sound back on EVERY sound works EXCEPT for my Media. like notifications, bleeps , etc all work but i can't hear music at all and i can't unmute it. ive tried a whole bunch of stuff and did a reset and nothing yet. As soon as i restart the phone, then the media sound wrks again.. any ideas?

Ear speaker not Working in Galaxy S4.SOLUTION FINALLY FOUND
I hadthis problem for a lot of time...when i was on the phone with a call instantly the sound was off...the loud speaker and the headphones and bluetooth were ok but the ear speaker was off. Firstly i thought that the cause of the problem was the fact the i have rooted my phone...i change a lot of roms... and some times the ear speaker was starting to work but then the same think instantly went down...i unrooted my phone but the problem was still there.... I TRY also the function *#0*# and when i push the botton of the "reciever" some times was working some times not..... when i was playing on this one time i push hard on the screen and has start to work again,.... Then i thought that the time to open the device has come.... Some youtube help on how to disassebly a galaxy s4 and i found the connector for the ear speaker...... i cleaned it... i used the hair dryer and the a connector spray for mantainence and the problem was fixed....I have seen after 2 days reaserch on the net that many people with a galaxy s4 have this problem.... in my opinion is a matter of humidity in this connector.... after hairdrying and a connector spray my phone was fixed... No need to send it back to samsung ....and pay money..because its rooted..(my knox counter is still 0x1 ) .
That was all falks .. hope to help somebody... its very easy to fix this problem once you understand the cause of it!!!

Sort of the same problem with s4 i337m
I recently flashed CyanogenMod on my S4 and now I have no volume at all. Anywhere. I also can't play videos of any kind. Snapchat, youtube, or web videos. I also get no volume with ringer and in call. I have tried flashing different ROM's and the problem persists. Any idea what the problem might be?
Maybe its the earpiece flex problem

I recently got an S4 i337, it was on 4.4.2. I wanted to root and unlock it so i downgraded it to 4.3 using two files from some other thread:
AP_I337UCUEMK2_1921628_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_C ERT.tar.md5
JFLTE_USA_ATT_16G.pit
Phone flashed fine to 4.3, then i had to change modem to USUAMDL. Used saferoot to root and regionlock away to unlock. Long story short after spending two days i was able to root and unlock the phone. I was happy and finally started restoring my data. But i suddenly noticed that there was no sound at all. Now the phone is on mk2 rom and i have no sound whatsoever. When i try to make a call, it hangs. When i try to play some music it says "sorry the player does not support this type of audio file"
I am very frustrated because i have been searching but couldnt find a solution. I cannot flash any other file e.g. mk2 to NB1 or any other MDL rom through odin. I used *#0*# to get to the hardware menu and tested speaker but it doesnt do anything. I still think its a software problem because phone is not able to make any calls either or play music files and hangs. I would greatly appreciate help.

I'm having the same problem after downgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.3 in order to root. The problem with the music not being able to play is very frustrating but not being able to make or receive phone calls is beginning to become a real problem.

Flash the modem back to a newer one. It is known that if you put an old NON-HLOS with the 4.4.2 bootloader that you lose sound.

Isn't the modem the same thing as the baseband? If so I have NC1 as my modem and can't find a newer one.
I have a similar problem with my speaker...
I've tried to replace phisical speaker and daughterboard... But still not work...
When in Android will played a sound (screen lock, music palying, dialing...) on the speaker come out only "tic"s... for the duration of sound... Then speaker will stop... Any ideas?

Hello thanks for reading. I update my Epic to the DK28 2.2.1 on 12/15 and have had a bunch of glitches since (eg. long home screen loads and missing widgets) But a couple days ago I lost all sound from the internal speaker! I can connect something to the headphone jack and hear everything perfectly but as soon as I disconnect... nothing. I have tried so far: wiping all data via recovery mode and all cache, installing audio controller apps but nothing seems to help. No sounds whatsoever even the sprint animation on boot makes no sound. Any ideas? Do you think flashing a custom rom might help?
Re: No Sounds Epic DK28
Sounds more like a hardware problem. Do you use headphones on the phone? I've had a problem on an old LG Chocolate 3 that did the same thing. I had to disassemble the phone and bend a contact point back out. Seems when I unplugged a set of headphones they contact was stuck to the terminal and bent it causing a short.
Try downgrading back to DI19 and seeing what happens. If the audio works again, then you've got a software problem. If it doesn't, you've got a hardware problem.

I switched from iphone 4 to S4 too. Didn't encounter such problem.
Try full wipe your phone using custom recovery, and flash latest stock rom. If problem still persist, it might be hardware problem.
I recommend this custom recovery.

Not full flash. What I meant was FULL WIPE. You have to flash custom recovery like the one i recommended, and clear dalvik, cache, /system, /data, /preload. This will ensure everything is cleared and that firmware you flashed will not be affected by leftovers from previous firmware.
nope

I have the exactly same phenomena on my new Samsung S4 i9505.
Took it to the lab , and they have replaced the "Ringer" hardware , but it did not help .
I tried changing it today to WCDMA Only , but I doubt if this will help . Don't believe in miracles .
The next thing to do is a Hard Reset and install OS from scratch .
If anyone knows the solution please advise .

Hi guys.. I found what causes the problem, it's Viber and Tango they take over the phone calls so you have to remove them and it will work again. It's supposed to work immediately but if not restart your phone hope it helps

Ok i had the same issue here too. To test if it was my in call receiver i recorded my voice using the phone's voice recorder - and sure enough I could here the loud crackling noise that people on the other end claim they hear. Really strange because the call is fine if I use my (wired) headset or put the call on speakerphone.
I followed the advice on here and changed the network mode to WCDMA and all is well so far. crackling noise is gone and even the voice recorder is working fine now. I'm on Three Mobile UK (like OP). I think theres something up with the way the phones modem interacts with their signal/equipment. Hopefull thats the last I see of that issue. Fingers crossed,

Ok here is what worked for me to get all sounds back working on your gs4 first thing is to get hold of a stock unlocked Rom i9505XXUEMJ7 flash this in Odin 3.0.7 by putting the phone into download mode Switch phone off, HOLD DOWN HOME, POWER, VOLUME,DOWN, BUTTONS all at the same time till you see green Android open Odin up plug in cable click on PDA search for the i9505XXUAEMJ7.MD5 you downloaded it might take a few mins for Odin to find it once it has just click on START and let it do its thing DONT DISCONNECT while going through this process when its finished then like you did in Odin flash the (open recovery TWRP.tar) the same way only take like 10 sec it will reboot itself. Now after it starts up if you have a backup in ex-sdcard restore to that custom rom flash it let it boot up now your going to see in the bottom left hand corner safe mode, now try your volume keys on side of phone if you hear sounds then your good to go, now all you have to do then is reboot phone and when it comes back on everything should all be back to normal. Hope this helps
I am also facing same problem. Is it hardware problem? I am on warranty, if hardware problem it may replaced by samsung. Please advise.
I Have The Same Problem!! Cant Hear Calls!!
Was this ever solved I'm experiencing the same issue. I cant hear callers or even the ringing when calling people. The weird part is it works when hooked up to my bluetooth in my car. If I restart my phone it will work for a little while then the issue comes back. I restored to factory settings and flashed AT&T's stock firmware still no luck. Someone please help!!!
any luck?
I was in a vibercall with my friend and heard some weird sounds like the ones when u tried to connect to internet in the olden days. Since than I am unable to hear a word and the other party as well can't hear nothing on a cellular call(viber and Skype etc working fine means no hardware issue, antenna is fine as the call connects perfectly and sms sent and received promptly). I reset my phone after backing up with samsung kies which was a headache in itself. After the reset problem persists but when I changed my sim card problem was solved but that didn't last long after a few minutes the glitch was still there. So its been more than 4 days now I am using S4 Active kindly let me know if you guys found any solution or else I will just hit to the repair center.
And if any custom rom than please note its s4 active i9525.
Thanks

If the phone is stock and not rooted and you have not made any modifications on it then I would return it
to where ever you purchased it from and get it exchanged.
If the phone is rooted and it has a custom rom then I suggest to odin flash the stock Samsung 9505 rom
and that should solve the problem.
Good luck!

As suggested, if you are stock then you probably want to go to Samsung support.
But if you have rooted and installed custom kernel then it could be that.
I had that similar issue, sound disappeared sometimes but came back if I shutdown (not restart) my phone for 10 sec and start again.
If you have similar issue then it's caused by custom kernel. Might want to switch to another kernel or stock one.
Apparently this happens if you flash a newer firmware without the new baseband.
If this is the case you should flash a full firmware (read up on the Knox stuff first though)

first of all thank you all for the replies,
i tried to turn on the noise reduction button and now the other side can hear me and i can't hear them.
there is some other setting to switch on or off ?
this phone is not rooted.
and the receiver speaker is working, i tested him using the *#0*# command.
and when my friend turn on the noise reduction button on his phone he can now speak while the phone is on speaker mode.
my friend phone is rooted and now its work to him.

Hello,
i've found some threads here with similar problems but they all were a result of wrong baseband used after a custom rom installation.
BUT i bought a i9505 with stock 4.4.2 TW rom UGNG8 (not rooted). At some point i noticed that the phone loses sound and mic completly. Sometimes can take a call but with no sound, neather can the caller hear me, no sound from music/video player and no system sounds eather(not even with headphones plugged in). Everything goes back to normal after a reboot.
I figured it was an outdated baseband so i rooted the device, updated the baseband to the latest (UGNK4) and installed CM12. But the problem is still here. At random times the device loses all sound and only a reboot fixes it
Haven't been able to reproduce the exact moment when it happen as it seem to be completly random (gets really anoying when i need to take an important call and there is no sound )
I could really use some help with this
Cheers,
H.
Rule of thumb: If it happens across multiple roms then it is most probably a hardware issue.
I'd suggest flashing the stock rom back and see if it helps.
Make sure it's the stock rom for the country where the phone was initially bought.
For instance: If the phone was bought from Germany but you're using it in England, it is still a German version of the S4 and therefor needs the German version.

thanks for the reply, i will try the stock firmware, maybe i missed something in the process earlier, and post back the results.

Fixed!
ok, after a lot of trial and error i narrowed it down to a hardware issue. The headphone jack was the thing making all the problems. i tried cleaning it but it didnt help, so i removed it. Device works flawless now. Already ordered a new jack. :good:
So to anyone having a similar issue -replacing (or just removing) the headphone jack does the trick.
Cheers,
H.
So, i was having some issues with the earphone i had bought recently, but having a few problems with the same brand sometimes earlier (microsoft really put up a really interesting choice with the low price and really good bass and sound quality for its pricing, but damn, those things had caused me two replacements in earlier models) i was considering taking it to the warranty and getting a new one, fine.
Then i got the moto earphone (had never used it, was in that plastic thingy yet) to get me through the day and i put the ms one in the bag, but when i started walking, the same problems appeared. The volume would get lower, sound getting distorted, and the song started to cut to the point it would recognize as if the headphone has been unplugged and i have to start the music again. i'm no expert but i think we've got some issues here son
I went to master google in search for answers and i've found that people have been having these kinds of issues since the first generation moto g, some even got a replacement and the jack would still come faulty, there were a major "consent" that the fault was the pocket lint inside, and cleaning it would solve the problem, but my phone doesn't have even two goddamn weeks, it didn't even had time to get dirty. (and i tried it cleaning, only a lil hair came out) I am currently listening to music, and it's perfect, when the phone stays still. If i start moving it around or mess with the connector, the issues come back again.
Does someone had this problem here too? found some solution besides the pocket lint thing? i didn't found any post here on xda related to that, and i really don't wanna send it ro warranty 'cause i need it really bad for my work, and i know it's gonna take some time in there, the problem can even come back...
Please, show me a light.
I have a problem where moving the headphone jack a small amount would stop music playback its so annoying. I mostly use Bluetooth headphones though.

Moving it also distorts the sound to the point it stops. Normally this happens with detective earphones, but the jack is new to me.
I'm sure it's the jack, I just got new headphones too. What you can do is expand that contact strip in the jack inward, hence better contact? I haven't done this yet though

yea, it is the jack indeed... are you facing this problem too?
i tried pulling it out a bit, but no results. Some random "solutions in the internet tell to put something behing that first metal contact strip... it that so?
So I kinda solved the problem these days... I bought a tpu case, and it has stopped. I guess that the phone is too slim, and it keeps banging in the pocket, making the jack loose and stopping the song. Now the phone is kinda bulky, fits right in the pocket, I can even run with it and the sound is still perfect. Sad that I gotta use this case, makes the phone Hella ugly, but yeah, I solved the problem
If anyone is facing it, try this, might work for you too.
Fixed my problem
I'd just like to add that I also suffered from this same issue (to the letter, volume decrease, distortion and all). It happened once a few weeks in but now, a few months later, it was happening so often that I had to give up using headphones.
Well, here's the thing: I contact Motorola and they give me the old crap about rebooting in safe mode and testing, or doing a factory reset.
As I KNOW this is a hardware issue, I just go ahead and reinstall the factory image (I was previously rooted) planning to send it in for repair/replacement: low and behold: it's fixed. So installing the original firmware and going through the setup (but choosing not to reinstall all my apps -new device option) fixed the problem. I have no idea how this can be. Maybe an app made the phone react too much to slight disturbances in the connection? When I have time, I'll be restoring my backup to see if the problem comes back, and uninstall apps one by one (starting with the xposed modules and other root apps).
I've been using the headphones a lot in the past 5 days with absolutely no issues.
tl:dr OP's exact problem, what seemed like a hardware fault, was fixed by a factory reset.

I'd just like to add that I also suffered from this same issue (to the letter, volume decrease, distortion and all). It happened once a few weeks in but now, a few months later, it was happening so often that I had to give up using headphones.

Now that was unexpected lol. Anyways, thanks for the reply, i've seen much of this kinds of problems on the internet, but none of it came to a conclusion, the posts die after sometime. I hope someone finds the answer in your reply.
So, i bricked my phone sometime ago and installed the factory image. i've been using the tpu case since it came, as i stated before, it has solved my problems (i think mainly because the phone get bulkier, fits into the jeans pocket and stop moving, so the jack isn't affected by any kind of movement and it works perfectly), but after you said that i recalled, there was one day when i forgot the case at home, and unaware of that i went working with the headphone and it worked perfectly, i just noticed i had forgot the case in my way home. I'll do some further testing without the case, but your solution might just have hit the right spot.

Did you, by any chance, have GravityBox installed on your phone when it was playing up? Also/or, where you using an unmodified ROM, as that's what I'm using usually (deodexed but stock) I've just restored my backup (that's rooted and has a few xposed modules on) and sure enough first time I touch the jack with music playing, it plays up (this time it triggered the voice command, which it did do some times). So I think to start by disabling GravityBox as that modifies a lot of stuff... Reboot, and the damn thing seems to work perfectly, I'm tugging and pulling at the jack right now and it's working perfectly.
I find it a bit too much to believe, and I don't want to lose GravityBox as that's a big reason I root.
One explanation I can come up with is that Motorola saw there was a problem and they fixed it in software, and installing AOSP or GravityBox that changes system files, gets rid of that software "fix".

Well, try to trigger the problem a couple of times with gravity box installed. I don't have it, installed xposed once and had major lag, stuttering and FC problems, then i took the ting off. Didn't test the jack thing, but i've never been a hard xposed user.
I really think my problem is hardware-related, but tonight i'll head home without the case and report back here.
If I am on a stock Moto ROM, I have the problem. When I moved to AOSP/CM based ROM's, I can manipulate my headphones without causing it to stop.. I think maybe the stock kernel is a bit too sensitive and stops it with just a little bit of disconnection vs a more lax implementation in AOSP/CM...
So I've ran my tests: climbed stairs, climbed down stairs, run a Lil bit, shake my hips (they don't lie) and messed around my pocket: no sign of Jack problems. I guess that flashing stock firmware again did the job, as you have stated earlier. I'm going to stop using the case and go jogging, or going more often to work listening to music without it, but after today field tests, I'm sure the issue is gone.

Just an update: I give up. I've tried multiple things, including almost bricking my device. I cannot find something definite at all. Installing a clean factory image (or a rom that has not been changed much) will get rid of the problem, even with root. However after restoring my TitaniumBackup of about 140 apps, the problem came back for a while. I noticed it after enabling MotoVoice, so I disabled moto voice and it disappeared, but then re-enabling moto voice didn't make the problem come back... And that is why I give up. I've ordered a pair of Bluetooth headphones.
I think that flashing the stock firmware again is the ultimate solution to solve the problem. After some tests I really couldn't trigger it again, so I guess that's the end of it
The problem is that the issue is so random I can't seem to find a proper way to trigger or to say it is 100% solved. I've read about it happening since the first generation moto g, seems like a hardware issue, but...
My headphone jack wont work properly when i insert the headphones into the jack completely but it works fine when i pull out a lil of the pin of headphones out of the headphone jack whats the deal its too annoying
