Unfortunately our tab 4 10.1 got the software OTA (I had SDM frozen so Im not sure how that happened).
Of course, root is now gone.
I tried towelroot, but no luck.
Has anyone had any luck with another method?
THANKS

I looked at VROOT but it has this listed:
VROOT - Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 only
I am looking at Chainfires method.
Can I use odin to return the firmware back to prior to the OTA?
I think this was the one that was prior: PDA: T530NUUEU1AND4

I think I will do that then, it says Canada, but should be the same version used for the USA tabs.
I froze the SDM app so it would not automatically download the updates but it did anyway. Is there something else I can freeze to stop the updates?

Apps for OTA Firmware Updates :
Kies.apk
LocalFOTA.apk
SyncmIDM.apk
SyncmIDS.apk
Dear billinaz
If i m not mistaken With Odin you can flash stock firmware at any time through download mode. But most imp thing you must have details of previous firmware prior to OTA like baseband and build version. If u have such information than you can find suitable stock firmware by Google it.

Maybe check your 10.1 and see if that is the same firmware as before the update. Would I need any other files?
OK, I used odin and restored the previous firmware. Ran towelroot again, and all is back to the way it was before the mistake in software update.
I was able to freeze LocalFOTA.apk but these were not there to freeze:
Kies.apk
SyncmIDM.apk
SyncmIDS.apk

You can use any firmware. In general, in order to know your region should be opened recovery (only sink), and there you will see. Or even easier, install the phone_info and you will be happy.

You can go to the phone settings > general > about device > software update and click on Update. It will tell you that your phone has been modified and will basically tell you to F.O. So to answer your question - no you can't use OTA any longer.

Probably, but I wouldn't update to 4.4.2 anyways, or not yet at least as it's riddled with too many bugs.

There was a topic about How to keep root and get OTA update. It is here.
Steps:
1. Open SuperSU settings, scroll down to the bottom, Enable Pro
2. Check Survival mode
3. Uncheck Enable Superuser
4. Install OTA update
5. After reboot, Enable Superuser
6. Disable Survival mode
Done
Be noted that you have to purchase Superuser Pro for this to work, and you have to reboot after upgrading to Pro.
Also if you have modified your ROM e.g deleted system apps or Verizon crap this method will fail unless you restore them.
Ok. I tried the OTA too, some time ago and after downloading it failed to install. My N3 is rooted and I thought I'd try anyway. But did anyone try to use kies? Some time ago I connected to kies and it told me that my phone wouldn't be supported. I think I installed another region. Yesterday I tried and it told me there was a new firmware although it's not 4.4.2 yet. So it would be interesting to know if it would install after download.
Some other thing: I have something like a mnt folder and one or two other folders like mnt_1. Just like if you update windows and don't do a clean install. How can I do a clean install on my phone once kitkat is released for DBT region?
As title says, I've tried TowelRoot but It said 'unsupported version' and I was afraid of using anything else that might damage my tab 4

Twrp recovery is a way for us to flash stuff into the system or even whole new systems.
If you find and install that on your phone you can then flash SuperSU. I'm sorry I don't have this device yet so I cannot help you more. But I have done similar with two other Samsung phones.

Im pretty sure he said. Flash twrp recovery with odin. Theres like some sort of file you flash with odin to get twrp, not with the apk.
Twrp is a recovery.
Samsung uses a pc recovery software called Odin. It is capable of flashing any part of an unlocked device including a recovery partition.
Since the tab 4 did not have a locked boot loader we can flash twrp without root. Once twrp is installed with Odin on the PC you can simply flash su into the device using twrp

You can use Wanam Xposed module to fake your device status. There are other Xposed modules that also does this. At first I thought this was only a cosmetic information, but it actually tricks the system and the OTA really work. It worked for me.

I am under custom recovery and i believe that the reason OTA update fail even fake the status.
Anyway to revert to stock recovery?
I don't like Kies, but sometimes I have to use it to check if there's an update, and if it finds one, it will install it for you but you have to reroot afterwards. I think this is the only method if you're rooted.
@Andrewtst, I had a Note 3 with custom recovery (CWM), and when I was one firmware behind, Kies prompted me for an update and after I updated it I got the stock recovery back. Don't know if this is the case with the Note 4, will try when there's an update for my Note 4.

Well there isn't a stable root for PJ2 I did a guide on rooting that you might want to check out. I explain how to get back to PE1 before rooting, and in the method it shows how to get data and sms back easily.

I also made a tethering mod method if you would like to check that out.

Hey! So just so I'm clear, I can follow your guide and it should work, even if I'm on PJ2 right now? Do I need a pit file like lvpre mentioned?

I didn't think you could get back to PE1 from PJ2 just by flashing the PE1 firmware. I also did not see where you explained how to get Voice and SMS back (possibly not needed if you are coming from PE1). Is this info included in the download (dropbox is preventing download because you're soo popular ) or does the XTether mod fix this issue?
I have heard that flashing the Echoe Rom from PE1 fixes most issues.

Yes you can start on PJ2 Firmware, however before you start rooting process you have to be on PE1. My guide includes how to get back down to PE1 before you start rooting. You can use Odin and the firmware included to flash you Samsung completely back to PE1. The only reason you can't use PJ2 is because it has updated PRL's and they wont allow you to reactivate your service, therefore to reactivate your phone service you have to be on PE1 Firmware using the older PRL's.
I do not know anything about a pit file, I have done this process many times with no problem. The reason I've done it so many times is to test out its success rate, and every time I've done it, the method gets easier to do, and it works 100% of the time.

As it says in the post, I did not create this method, I simply make it easier to follow. How to get sms and calling back is in the link reference under the subtitle "4.Rooting:". He shows how to root the device and then get everything working. He just doesn't explain the setup, how to install Xposed, and he does not show how to get back to PE1 so that's what I've done with my post, is just make it easier to follow.
SIDE NOTE: Service and sms is very easy to get back on PE1 I tried many times to do it on PJ2 using different methods, the PRL just wouldn't allow me to activate my device.
When I tried this method it said pit fail immediately in Odin. I tried adding the pit file but it still failed
just tried it too. Same result. execept i didn't try with a PIT. think you could provide it for me? @vegoja

Hmm. Ok. Can you tell me your variant of Samsung Galaxy S7. Like what service provider, Snapdragon or Exynos?
and did you use the files directly from my drop box link?
Did you run Odin as admin?
Does the Odin exe file say "Odin PrinceComsy.exe" and you also have to "Odin3.ini" config settings?
Maybe this post will help.
