What will happen if I update my rooted note3 through Kies or OTA? Is it safe?

You can go to the phone settings > general > about device > software update and click on Update. It will tell you that your phone has been modified and will basically tell you to F.O. So to answer your question - no you can't use OTA any longer.

Nothin bad will happen, just try it yourself.

you can set your status from modified to official using wanam xposed so you can ota,
but you will loose your root and got updated bootloader when you do ota.
Probably, but I wouldn't update to 4.4.2 anyways, or not yet at least as it's riddled with too many bugs.

There was a topic about How to keep root and get OTA update. It is here.
Steps:
1. Open SuperSU settings, scroll down to the bottom, Enable Pro
2. Check Survival mode
3. Uncheck Enable Superuser
4. Install OTA update
5. After reboot, Enable Superuser
6. Disable Survival mode
Done
Be noted that you have to purchase Superuser Pro for this to work, and you have to reboot after upgrading to Pro.
Also if you have modified your ROM e.g deleted system apps or Verizon crap this method will fail unless you restore them.
Ok. I tried the OTA too, some time ago and after downloading it failed to install. My N3 is rooted and I thought I'd try anyway. But did anyone try to use kies? Some time ago I connected to kies and it told me that my phone wouldn't be supported. I think I installed another region. Yesterday I tried and it told me there was a new firmware although it's not 4.4.2 yet. So it would be interesting to know if it would install after download.
Some other thing: I have something like a mnt folder and one or two other folders like mnt_1. Just like if you update windows and don't do a clean install. How can I do a clean install on my phone once kitkat is released for DBT region?

Other said that if you root your G2 and used the original stock rom and recovery, you can have an OTA with no Problem, is that TRUE?
how about you ROOT your G2, and you used stock rom and recovery but you installed Xposed to change your notification bar, can you still receive OTA update without a problem?

I was running a stock rom and I went to install the OTA now I can't do anything. I have tried factory reset. I have tried restoring all the backups I have on have on TWRP and it says that the restore is successful but when I reboot it goes right back to the recovery mode. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions please?????
search, thats what you can do.
when root only, no problem if you temporarily via superuser settings disable root. Ota update and reroot. I think.
Now I have a question for you, do you know a good joke?
tip: when doing anything custom, use the search to determine if it can do harm, or inhibits updating. Then you will always be safe.

Apps for OTA Firmware Updates :
Kies.apk
LocalFOTA.apk
SyncmIDM.apk
SyncmIDS.apk
Dear billinaz
If i m not mistaken With Odin you can flash stock firmware at any time through download mode. But most imp thing you must have details of previous firmware prior to OTA like baseband and build version. If u have such information than you can find suitable stock firmware by Google it.

OK, I used odin and restored the previous firmware. Ran towelroot again, and all is back to the way it was before the mistake in software update.
I was able to freeze LocalFOTA.apk but these were not there to freeze:
Kies.apk
SyncmIDM.apk

You can use any firmware. In general, in order to know your region should be opened recovery (only sink), and there you will see. Or even easier, install the phone_info and you will be happy.

You can use Wanam Xposed module to fake your device status. There are other Xposed modules that also does this. At first I thought this was only a cosmetic information, but it actually tricks the system and the OTA really work. It worked for me.

I am under custom recovery and i believe that the reason OTA update fail even fake the status.
Anyway to revert to stock recovery?
I don't like Kies, but sometimes I have to use it to check if there's an update, and if it finds one, it will install it for you but you have to reroot afterwards. I think this is the only method if you're rooted.
@Andrewtst, I had a Note 3 with custom recovery (CWM), and when I was one firmware behind, Kies prompted me for an update and after I updated it I got the stock recovery back. Don't know if this is the case with the Note 4, will try when there's an update for my Note 4.

In most cases you cannot...it will fail. You can try to just put back stock recovery, but out of experience if a single file has been changed or missing the update will fail. Best option is to return to complete stock via Odin. Or wait to see if someone can pull out firmware to flash then come out with rooted ROMs.
I'm on stock, but am rooted. I cannot upgrade OTA. It says, "System has been tampered."

Nope, phone has been solid except for these partial reboots for the last two months. It started right after the first MM update (PC1). Hasn't gotten worse or better. Hoping this is the "stability improvement" that is getting fixed.

I've also had random reboots ever since Marshmallow/PC1. I ended up trying to isolate the problem by starting from factory reset and installing apps in small groups to determine where there was an incompatibility. So far, I've found that the Amazon appstore is definitely one source of instability. The other one for me seems to be the app AnyMote. I'm hoping that PE1 somehow fixes these...

Yep, root is good with PE1. Able to odin latest TWRP and install chainfire su 2.74 to achieve root with no problem. I even odin back down to PD1 without a single problem.
What are the potential security risk by not taking these updates? Since having root wont allow you to do the update and having to flash stock software to take the update is a bit of a pain.
How?

So, would you mind me asking, are those the only steps?* Odin latest TWRP then install (thru play store? ) su 2.74?

I'm on stock PD1 with TWRP 3.0.2.0 rooted with SuperSU 2.74 xposed-alt-v83-sdk23. Currently my Android Pay is working...like used it and made a purchase and everything, twice! Anyone know if it still works after PE1 update?

So, would you mind me asking, are those the only steps?* Odin latest TWRP then install (thru play store? ) su 2.74?
I'm assuming I'd need to stay stock until a PE1 rom is made. How would i go to PD firmware and stay rooted after* if wanting to flash some custom roms?
Any help/advice appreciated.
