Razr M stuck on 3g! - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So a few days ago, my Razr M decided to stop using 4g, and is now stuck using 4g. Even after returning to stock 4.4.2, this is still an issue. Any insight as to what's wrong with my phone?

Had this happen once I tried a bunch of stuff... I can't remember but I think I actually just let it die to 0% and let it charge back to 100% while off... But during that time I also pulled my SD card out put the data on my PC formatted it put data back on... I don't think the new Sim helped at all but it wouldn't hurt to try

Did you try the battery drain. Also turn the phone off, take the 4g simcard out and ensure no dust is in the slot (maybe blow it with a bit of compressed air).

I'll give battery drain a go. I haven't done that, and I might need a new Sim.

Same issue -- this was how I fixed mine

I've had this happen after flashing some ROMs (MIUI and older CM versions). It's a ***** to fix, and honestly its mostly trial and error. I did manage to get it to work, but I can't remember the exact series of things I did. You can tell its working correctly when it shows 4G/LTE (not just LTE) and you can still make phone calls, and you can send/receive texts and MMS.
Before trying any of this though, it might just be a KitKat issue -- you will lose a huge amount of reception running the stock 4.4.2 OS. When I tried it I was never able to get 4G due to the poor signals I was getting with KitKat. I would strongly recommend reflashing to the the last Jelly Bean stock firmware (skip gpt.bin and tz.bin) and see if you still have the no 4G issue. I'm running stock JB (with the garbage apps frozen) after trying every ROM out there, because the signals I get are way stronger, and the battery life (might be due to better signals?) is amazing -- I can go 2-3 days without a charge.
In any case, if you still want to try it, I think these settings are the ones you want (what worked for me was actually TOGGLING the settings to something else, then back to the correct ones). Also, this was under JB, but I think its identical with KitKat:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Go to Phone Info. Click the menu option and click on the Radio Bands. Change it to US Band. This will break everything.
Go back to the menu and Radio Bands. Change it back to Cellular.
Then scroll down and click on the Preferred Network Type. Change it to GSM/CDMA (Auto). At this point you should see the Location: showing actual info in the BID, SID, NID fields, and GSM will be "In Service", GSRM will be "Connected" and Network Type will probably be eHRPD (which is still 3G).
Click on the preferred network type again and change it to "LTE/CDMA/Evdo". It should change the GSRM to LTE. If not, power off, pull the SIM, power on. Wait for it to say SIM not found. Power back off, put in the SIM and power back on.
Go to your Settings, and under Wireless & networks click on More... and click Mobile Networks. Again, the fix was toggling, so if it says Global, change it to LTE/CDMA or if it says LTE/CDMA, change it to Global. It doesn't matter which one its set to (as long as its one of those 2 and you toggled it).
At this point, I had to let the phone sit for about 10-15 minutes. After I came back, it started switching automatically to 4G/LTE and you should be good to go.
If you can't MMS or text, go back to the Mobile Networks settings, click on Access Point Names, click the menu and reset to default. Power off and power back on.
Hope this helps... GL!

I wish I could say that helped... But it didn't... I'm not sure what this thing is doing, in LTE, it doesn't even detect a network.

I had the same problem. Lost 4g.
Tried all of the suggestions in this thread and the CM11 and GPE threads in Android Dev section.
Got a new sim card.
All better.

So this worked for me....kinda. It will keep my LTE when I switch back and forth, but only until I call someone. At which point it will stop auto-switching back and forth.

So, I got a new SIM, and things worked for a while, but when I tried to make a call, it said "Phone not authenticated". So I go back in, the guy says to dial *228, and 1 to activate. I do it, and the calling works, but I'm back to 3g. So I'm back in this boat again...while I get 4g in my Gnex, with the same Sim...

Didn't ATTACK tell you in another thread that *228 fries the 4g sim cards?
Sent from my RAZR M xt907 (KitStalk) using Tapatalk

True... But see, the same SIM can get 4G in my Galaxy Nexus, which makes 0 sense. I might go get another SIM again, but I'll just deal with it for a while. It works if I do LTE only mode on my Razr. It's strange that the same SIM works perfect in my other phone.

I would factory reset or wait a few days. In a few days a new software update will be rolling out.

Probably won't use it. It'll lock my boot loader or unroot me, which I'd hate.

It will make you lose root but you can't lock your boot loader after its unlocked... Even taking an OTA. So just flash twrp and flash SuperSU zip and then you're good to go after a OTA

You're boot loader will not be relocked. . if the ota wasn't relocking the bl and doing just the opposite then you have nothing to worry about regarding that... As for unroot you're unlocked so all you'd have to do is flash SuperSU or use the root method again... If you're stock then rather the FDR just run it in safe mode long press power button till screen pop long press power off till screen pop select OK...if safe mode helps then you'll need to FDR...

Mobile network greyed out

For some reason my 3g keeps disconnecting. In settings the mobile network option is greyed out, stuck on "turning on". The only thing that fixes it is a reboot.

No one has any idea why this happens?
Is your phone stock?
it seems to just show that when the phone is idle, not updating, sending/receiving, etc. i have no way to prove this, just a theory.

I had that problem when I was running adrylalyne's Vanilla FrankenROM. It's the sole reason why I had to quit running it. It was a seriously annoying once-in-a-while thing at first but once I'd been running it for about 24 hours, it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME and got to the point where sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix it. I haven't had it on any other ROM, though.
I was running the leaked radio (2.05?) when I had that ROM. Now that I've got 2.15, I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

No, the connection completely goes away. It's not just "I can't see the 3G symbol"... The phone actually has NO data connection and it seems impossible to get it to come back without a reboot.
2.15 radio fixed that for me. Using first leak Rom still.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
in order to get rid of this, you'd need to find which file or which portion of that file controls the signal indicator on the phone, and replace it with an older version of that file, from before this "idle" indicator began.
maybe the google holds the answers you seek?

Good to know. I think I will try that FrankenROM again, then.
i'm unrooted and on stock OS, just got my incredible yesterday...so far i've noticed that it seems to just stay dormant, whenever i open an app that connects to the network, it automatically lights up the indicator and starts using the data, and it doesn't seem to prevent me from actually sending or receiving data, so i don't know how i would tell if it's actually no connection or just an "idle" indicator. how did you come to that conclusion?

What you see is normal. The 3G (or 1X) indicator only lights when the data connection is being used. The problem here is that there was no data connection. I would attempt to do anything that used the data connection and it would not connect. No email, no internet, no Nav, no nothing. The programs would all open, but could not download anything.
Agreed, that's sort of what I was implying, I was referring to the OP. so the connection issues are Rom based, not related with the gray indicators. Just because its gray doesn't mean you don't have connection. Clarifying for the next person who stumbles across this thread.

What he was talking about being greyed out is when you go into Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks, the place where you check to turn Mobile networks on and off is greyed out with the text of "Turning on..." below.

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I was in a tiny town in Texas that apparently had no 3g and I was unable to do anything that used the data connection. Reboot didn't work, neither did changing the Mobile Directory Number to all zeros when pressing ##program>NAM-General (as was suggested on a different forum which I cannot link to). What sucks is that it's highly unlikely I can duplicate this problem since there is probably good 3g coverage around the verizon store in the city where I live. I called verizon and the person said something about that area not having access to the data network, which I don't believe because when I was screwing with the settings under ##program I managed to get a text message. My wife's Samsung Vibrant (I know, different network) had no 3g but she was still able to access all apps that required the data network.
When my wife's Incredible was stock, this happened to her. It wouldn't connect to 3G. When going into settings and checking it out, "Mobile Network" was all grayed out. After LONG discussions with Verizon Tech Dept, 2 factory resets later, they found the problem to be on their end with the phone being "lost" on their system. They reset something (didn't tell me what) and bingo! her phone had 3G again.
I just had it happen to me. Reboot fixed it, but I'd like to know why its happening so I can tell my friends at VZW to look into it...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Still happening to me. I told the tech that a bunch of people in the forums were saying it was a problem on their end, something about my phone needing to be removed from and then added back to the data plan, and they told me that they'd look into it. Eventually the 3g came back on its own like it always has when I have this problem, and the next day I got a text from verizon saying the issue had been fixed (which I doubt consisted of anything more than someone having the system send me a text saying the issue had been fixed). I've had this problem when my phone was stock, when I updated to the 2.05 baseband, and now that I've rooted and installed skyraider. Not exactly the experience I anticipated when I left the iphone 3g...
noticed another thing, idk if related...my gmail will "quit" working...meaning, it shows i have new emails inside the app, but they haven't pulled to my phone yet. the refresh button in the app, and the sync now button under accounts don't work, i had to do a nand wipe and restore a file from a day ago. i think it's app related, because it always seemed to happen after i updated some apps in the market, but one of the times (this last time) i didn't update the apps, i deleted them and it still happened. all other data and network connections work fine, only gmail. prolly not related, but thought i'd throw it out there

[Q] 4g Radio not turning on

Hey everyone! I have been having a problem with my Samsung Epic. I am in NYC and recently they have turned on the 4G within the city limits. It was working great last week and I was getting a decent 4G connection (8down, 4up). Now yesterday When I went to activate the 4G radio on my phone it wasn't turning on. The 4G button stays grey and it says its turning on but it never turns green. When I go into the 4G settings its grayed out but its says "turning on..." 3g stays connected during this. Wifi works when I turn that on, but I notice back in the 4g settings menu 4g still says "Turning on".. it doesn't even time out. It completely killed my battery after 20 mins.
I tried a factory reset.. didn't work... Tried the Odin full reset (stock everything).. No dice. I never rooted the phone or did anything to it except install Juice Defender (which cause a whole bunch of problems). Has anyone else had this problem? I am within my 30days so i'm thinking of exchanging my phone.. any ideas??? Thanks in advance!!!
I'm having the same problem

I had the same problem, get to a sprint store and get your phone replaced. I'm guessing it is a radio problem. May be fixable if the sprint techs actually did something more then just resetting to stock.
Flash the DG27 radio then upgrade to DI07 again. Could also force your phone to re-provision itself.
http://firon.net/xda/modem.d700.tar here's the modem, flash it with Odin as Phone.
This is a longshot, but I've been messing around with a few settings menu and I saw an interesting WiMAX setting.
Goto the dialer, input ##3282#.
Goto WiMAX, enter your MSL code. (find your MSL code by opening an adb shell to your device, use the command "getprop" once in the shell, scroll up and look for a line that says "[ril.MSL]: [??????]")
See what it says under ACTIVATED and REALM, should say "ACTIVATED:TRUE" and "REALM:sprintpcs.com", respectively. If it doesn't that might be where your problem is. Tell a level 2 sprint tech.
Next, try to goto WORK MODE, in there you can set your work mode, mine is at 2 and 4G is working fine, I wish I could tell you what work mode 0,1, & 3 did differently, but I can't locate much info on the net. I'll update this if I find out later...
Hope this can be of some help to you.
My phone is doing the same thing. I don't live in a 4g area yet but I would like to be able to use it when I travel. If there is no 4g service, should the 4g still turn green?

Help with epic

I have never had this problem before or read about it. I keep wifi on at my house cause it's faster. Well tonight I went to plug my phone in and I took it off wifi but my 3G won't come up. I've tried everything. Pulled battery out, went to airplane mode and then back tried to update prl. I can't get my 3G to come back on. I have an app called quick settings that I've had for a long to turn off my 3G to save battery and it just says connecting.I've deleted the app and downloaded it back again and nothing. This has never happened to me before. How can I get. My Internet back? I am really lost on this one. It's like it's locked up and wont come back on. Thanks. By the way I have just about full reception.

You might have to do a factory reset. Before you do wait a bit and see if anyone has other ideas.

That's what I was afraid of. I'm on 2.1 and rooted but nothing has changed on my phone for at least 2 wks. No new apps or anything. Will factory resetting break my root?
Wait a while. This has happened to me on occasion and it has nothing to do with anything I did.
Check with sprint to see if there's a data outage in your area. Or you can try traveling to a different location to see if you get 3g somewhere else and then update your profile/prl from there. I had the same experience with a similar app. Went to an area where I got 3g, called sprint, and they updated my profile. Try doing that to see what happens.
I let it try it all night last night and woke up and still no 3g at the top. i can turn wifi on and it works fine. it just wont bring up the 3g icon and when i look in the quick settings it is greyed and says connecting. ill wait til i leave the house today and try it later. i just dont think its gonna work it just seems like the 3g is locked since it wont even displays the icon but hopefully im wrong thanks for the help guys. i know what you mean b3nny but my phone wont even displays the 3g icon at the top. i would assume if there was an outage it would still display the icon at the top.m,y wife has a hero and her internet is fine so no outage. thanks for trying to help but i think a factory restore is my only option. im about ready to go get to sprint and get another epic.
if i go to sprint and show them my phone i have insurance but this should go thru the manufacturers warranty. would i get a new or refurb one? i know if you use the insurance you get a refurb but what about the warranty? its not only this reason but my phone freezes a lot and will back out of an application for no reason at all. im just done with this one. there has to be one that works better than this one.thanks
Is your 3G Data enabled in the settings?
Not completely sure if it applies to 2.1 as I am running 2.2, but try and go to: 'Menu->Settings->Wireless and Networks->Mobile networks' and see if the box is checked by '3G Data'. Again, I am running 2.2, so I dont know if it is exactly the same, but worth a check.

Out of Ideas - G2 Airplane Mode - Really Need Help

So I had a rooted G2, running gingervillain 1.5, and suddenly out of nowhere I got no service, my wifi was being weird (not connecting, not finding any wireless networks etc.) so I decided to go ahead an unroot and restore to factory settings. I used the guide "remove permanent root," from the sticky database of G2 guides. It worked, I am factory reseted and unrooted, however, I STILL have NO SERVICE, and when I look at the wireless network settings it says airplane mode is on. I uncheck it but it doesn't work. I try clicking on mobile networks, but that is unclickable; I even try holding down the power button and selecting airplane mode off from the power button menu screen; however, none of these things work! ]
This is so frustrating, if anyone could help me out with this it'd be appreciated. Thank you!
Daymm.... have you tried getting updated radio?

If I were u send it in for warranty. Tell them that the phone singnal stop working. Make sure u say u already tried to factory reset so you can get your replacement phone faster. Also make sure you have s-on and on the lastest ota when u send it in
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Hmmm... that is really weird. Flash back to Gingervillian and see if you're still getting the issue. If you are, then flash back to stock with the most up to date OTA version. That would isolate any software issues since you'll be reflashing a new radio. If it's still funky, make sure you have S-On and send it in for warranty repair.
i had the same issue, call tmobile and see if they can connect to your sim card. it wont matter if you are rooted or not. if they can see your sim then i dont know what the deal is but if they cannot see your sim, you will have no service like you are saying and will need a new sim card.
Yup. Aha had the issue this morning really ticked me off but T-Mobile just refreshed my signal

Tried flashing back to gingervillain, currently calling T-Mobile (from another phone cause wi-fi calling wont work since it says the SIM is invalid on my phone) and seeing if they can read my SIM card; will update when I see what happens.
Thanks everyone who replied so far!
Sounds like a bad sim to me. My G1 went through 3 of them. Each time, I went to the tmob store and they just gave me a new one. Never asked to see the phone, just tested my sim and gave me a new one.
Though - I never noticed the airplane mode part of it... Mine just wouldn't get a signal.

Keep losing cell connection after OTA v6.0 update

I use my turbo2 on tmobile. Never had any problems. I've had it for >6 months. After 6.0 OTA update every couple hours I lose cell signal. It still shows bars but I don't receive calls and if I go to make a call it says cell network not available and then the bars go all grey like i have no signal. I have to reboot or pop the SIM out and back in.
Tmobile had me set up APN, and swapped to a brand new SIM, but it's still happening. They are at a bit of a loss. Anyone have any ideas?
Reflashing radio may help. You can wipe some related partitions but I'm not sure which and do not wipe randomly!

Had the same issue. I gave my dad a droid turbo 2 from Verizon (got it from my company) to use with his T-Mobile sim. Ended up having to get him a new one that was still on lollipop. Now it keeps getting the update notifications and even though I disabled all VZW stuff and turned off notifications from the Moto stuff I still get the full screen update notification all the time.
I did a full factory reset and it still happened. Motorola is sending me a new phone... @tgtoys... are you thinking that it just won't work with Marshmallow at all? I was thinking it was maybe just a hardware failure...

Just "Force Stop" Motorola Update Services. You won't see the notification anymore. But if you turn off your phone you need to do it again. Works for me!
You might check out this thread I just posted as well. Not sure if it's the cause of your issues, but worth a shot.

Same thing happened to mine. Go to settings> advance calling> turn off HD voice. For some reason if it can't keep HD voice quality droid turbo thinks it's better to just drop the call. Now I never drop calls

Trying this
my droid turbo 2 imei is 0... I've tried reflashing the firmware using rsd lite and fastboot...is there any way to recover it??
Its a WiFi bug. I have WiFi turned off and haven't had signal drop. It would get annoying because i wouldn't notice till i pull out my phone and see that it says Emergency Calls Only, so a reboot was needed.
friends
if signal is lost
via ADB and fastboot:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot reboot
try).
