I've installed launch pro plus and now have about 250+mb free with many widgets onscreen. I guess touchwiz is resource hog.
Edit: after reading comments i switched to APEX launcher.. its even better.
Hows the multitasking on it.... can you play shadowgun, surf the web, do a text , make a call and then go back to the shadow gun game without the game having to restart. thanks
I thought LPP didn't work on ICS, I guess I was wrong!
Did you experiences any lags/slow-downs after that? I always thought touchwiz was hardware accelerated.
Launcher Pro hasn't been updated in forever. No thanks.
Nova or Apex Launcher would be my choice.

I have had mixed results running various roms. On some it didn't work at all and others very poorly. I have yet to see it work without any issues.
_______________
Just Flash It !!!
it works ... but the code is heavily outdated, project is abanconed by the developer.
better get nova launcher, it got way more features (but lacks the LP widgets -- but who cares )
And about the RAM: dont worry ... Android is designed to use its RAM, not to keep the RAM empty --- still 750mb left which is enough
Can you take a screenshot of the available RAM after using Launcher Pro?
People should stop using LPP. It hasn't been updated for over a year. No support. The developer is not responsive.
Do not support these types of developers.

Hey,
How many Ram do you get after killing all apps in task manager ?
Thanks.
Are you still able to use the gestures like shake to sync and double tap to move to the top of the list?

task manager + gotaskmanager all kill = about 300mb.
Thanks for your answer.
And if you use the Pop up play function ? (= watch a video )
How many Ram does it consume (or let free) ?
Oh boy! Here we go again with the Windows mentality of wanting free RAM. You guys really have no clue. Please go read up on how Linux and Android uses RAM and why free RAM is not really a great thing.
I just ask questions about RAM cause I lack of it on my SGS ... Try to put on a SGS 1 or 2 widgets and you will see if RAM is important or not ...

Isn't free ram important ? I don't want to know the technical side or anything because as far as I know having free ram makes multitasking plain brilliant .... I will give u an example on sgs 1 the ram was 329 mb of which touchwiz usually took about 200 mb so when suppose one is browsing the web with multiple tabs with flash pages loaded touchwiz would crash and it would a couple of seconds to reload secondly the app drawer will also reload taking upto 5 seconds.....now all these problems were taken care of in sgs 2 because it had a lot of ram so for me its important ....I hope that on sgs3 the user experience is perfect just like sgs2 ...m really looking forward to it
Just to let you guys know, do not use a task manager that kills apps in your minfree. Only use the task manager Samsung gave you that is taking memory outside of your min free.

hello! sometimes happens and I hate it.
when i am using some app and i press center button che touchwiz is empty and in 1/2 second all appear.
i really hate it.
is there a way to fix it?
i also see that i have always 1,2 gb ram full and just 800 mb free..is it normal?or maybe correlated?
thanks

To the second question: that's completely normal, you don't have to worry about it. Not used RAM is wasted RAM. I'll let someone smarter answer the first question. There may come if there already isn't a fix that will lock the launcher to memory or something :fingers-crossed:
The redraws will be ironed out slowly in newer updates.
One thing that could help you in case you didn't do it allready is to go to S-Voice > settings > and disable that ,,open via the home key'' option .
thanks! i have uninstalled (just freeze) everything like s voice ecc..

I am using stock launcher with stock rooted ROM. Don't keep activities is off and backgrounds process limit is at standart. I don't have any apps set to kill activities or any task killers. I've got 1 gb free ram and it still kill the launcher while all the other open apps are still in memory

This is just an inherent problem with the launcher. It can get killed, and you can't do anything about it short of installing tweaks and scripts. @simms22 pointed out a couple things you can check, but by default none of those should be there causing trouble to begin with, so yeah... until Google comes up with a solution.

Yes but people usually tell me to stop using my crappy widgets and my crappy launcher (Apex). I can't help it. I don't think Google will do anything about it, and it seems the only solution that tends to work is either you make sure its a low memory launcher with few widgets or you go overkill on RAM like 16gb RAM on phones.

A few months ago I would end up with 600 mb of ram after opening a few apps including settings. Each month has brought improvements. After the January update I now have around 1200 or more free mb after opening and closing apps keeping the phone fast. I use a lot of ram with my widgets and apps so I like this last update

Does that mean to say that some background apps are being shut down more? As they say, unused ram can be at times wasted ram, so I hope this freeing up of the ram is not at the expense of apps being closed!

For me I generally do too. Back in the day I used to have "long press back to kill" and so my method of returning to home screen was always to kill an app. But I've found recently with some apps, e.g. Di radio music streaming, despite being ignored from battery optimisation, kept getting closed in the background the other day...
Therefore I hope this potential new ram management with Jan update is smarter...

It's better ram management. When I open and close settings I would lose 200mb...so it wouldn't free up the ram even though I closed settings. Now the ram is restored after closing settings.
So they have been working on ram management.

Actually you are, opened apps stored in RAM does not use any additional cpu/battery resources. On the other hand closing and then reopening apps uses the cpu so it uses more battery.

Yep, I believe that. However, I bet the difference is so minimal it really makes no difference at all.
I don't know what they improved, but I know that I have loosed 2 at 3 hours of SOT.

My guess is placebo effect for everyone.
Some people swear the battery life is worse, other it's better, some said the device is faster, other it's slower.
Hey guys, I hope you're all doing well.
My question is why in my RN7 that hast 4gb of RAM, there is alway at least 1.5GB free? I also noticed it in a friend's phone that have 3GB and with 1 or 2 GB free, I wouln't mind if my phone usage was low, but almost always it has to reload the apps that were opened before the 3rd or 4th most recent. I dont know if I'm making any sense but the RAM usage shouldn't be almost 100%?
Thank you
Is that for what u ask?
That's exactly what I mean, the RAM is free but several apps have to be reloaded after a while.
Edit: I think I found an answer, I suppose is the battery optimizer that closes apps after a while, if anyone knows about this, please confirm.
2Gb free here. On latest RevOS MIUI.
I'm not worried about using 2 of 4gigs, is the contrary, I want to use all the gigs so my apps don't reload too often and are ready to use

Change app battery saver of particular app to no restrictions and lock the app in recents. Maybe it'll not kill the app.
