[Q] Phone insurance after rooting - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. Hope you're all good,
I have a question from a friend with a Note 3 who isn't on XDA. He's wanting to root his device. He's not bothered about losing the Samsung warranty, but he does pay for insurance each month. He wants to know if rooting will effect his insurance should he need to claim on it.
Any ideas?
Thank you

Maybe asking the insurance company will be better ? :sly:

i don think so...
cause this is extra money so should have extra support
however it s better to ask from insurance company.

Thanks guys.
Yeah. I'm thinking a sly ask of the insurance company. Something along the lines of 'I want to buy insurance off you for a future phone. Just one thing...'

dropped my HD2 , looks like ****

hey guys i dropped my HD2 yesterday when coming back from airport , ****ty day
ok i called Tmob and they told me i do have insurance and i'd have to pay $130 to get it replaced, my question is if i call up the insurance company and tell the i need replacement because my screen is all cracked up , do they ask for the old phone to be sent ?
Or should i just call and tell em i lost the phone and get the new one ?
because i am planning to pay like $150 and fix the screen and sell the phone and recover the money.
And also finally XDA is out of stone age design lol
Pretty sure you have to give the phone back, if you say it's lost they lock the phone from being used again....or so that's what they told me when I asked them.
Tell them that you lost it. Don't say it's damaged, or you'll have to return it. The guy above me is wrong, they can't block the phone..
Well, they can, but all you have to do to reuse it on tmo again is give them a different imei lol all they can technically block is the iccid from your sim.

I think you might be out of luck now. If you already told t-mobile about the screen, it's going to be flagged so next time you call and say it got lost, they are going to think you are doing insurance fraud. they will probably than tell you that now you are going to have to pay $200-250 whatever the upgrade fee is if you want another hd2.
I dropped mine after only having it for a month. Ended up calling HTC, I sent it to them and they replaced the glass for $50. Good as new. Good luck.
If you broke the phone and still have it they are going to want it back. If you lie and tell them you lost it its insurance fraud. Not worth it unless you want to deal with lawyers and court. Man up, you broke your **** and have to pay for it.

If you tell them you lost it to get a replacement and you didnt then that is indeed fraud and XDA does not condone that at all

Asurion.. claiming lost instead of damaged

If I claim damaged to asurion will they make me send in my phone(bricked)? vs.. claiming lost phone I can keep my original? .... is this cheating?
Cheating? No.
Insurance fraud, a criminal act? Yes.
is me bricking the phone covered legally? If I tell them I messed it up will they cover it?
Un-brick it....seriously. There is enough information on this fora to fix 99.9999999% of all problems with this phone. Stop being lazy.
Well.. I've got an galaxy s 4g.. so not so easy..I've been fairly persistent in trying for about 3 days.. problem is no .pit file available. I've tried everything.. get a couple tar's to load about 95 percent but fail right at the end. I do have an extra tmo phone i can use for the time being but the sms4g forum is a very small group compared to the vibrant community here. I know something will probably come out in time but the way things look on our board it could be some time.
You're in the wrong forum...
It is insurance fraud....get F*cked if you are trying to "beat" the system. You knew what could happen if you played around, and now you want to wash your hands of it. Have patience.
I mean you could tryv and play the pitty game and say "i master reseted it and it broke idk whats going on?!?" Then hope they dont find out. And if they do say you have no idea what they are talking about.
(waits for trolls to say zomg thats wrong!)
I use swype so expect bad grammar and errors
Zomg that's wrong!
Insurance don't care what you've done to the phone as long as your willing to pay the deductible.
Its warranty repair that's void by rooting

In that case, I'd say they also don't mind raising the rates for everyone to cover all the extra payouts caused by these sort of folks. Sure insurance goes up every year but if you think this irresponsible behavior has no bearing on that then I must strongly disagree.

Broken devices are still worth money. A bricked phone can still be reflashed by the manufacturer and resold as a refurb, or components from it can be reused on other damaged/broken devices.
If you report it damaged you have to send the device back. Lost, you don't because you obviously don't have it. Stolen, you don't, but you'll need to provide them with a police report # to get a replacement.
Well I struggled a bit with this.. but bottom line is I had no intention of damaging the device.. kinda like if I took it to a water park and it got wet...or when I take it when I go jogging I know I'm at risk at dropping it. It's not like I damaged it on purpose just to get a new one. So I made the claim and was honest when describing the damage... it said I needed to call them for them to research my damage more.. so I called and they didn't ask me anything.. just where I want the new one sent. They also told me I had the option of sending the damaged one back or not.. if I didn't that Tmobile would charge me another $30 dollars. I specifically asked her if I wanted to keep it for future problems like glass breakage or something else and she said it was totally up to me and just to remember the $30 dollar charge.
So tonight someone posted a .pit file and of course it worked and I'm back up and running so tomorrow I'll call and let them know it started working again and will send the replacement back and hopefully get my $130 returned sooner than later. THanks for the replies.. was good to get some feedback.

Thanks, wow I didn't know that, I'll probably cancel my insurance then. It sounds more like a rip off now, monthly payments + deductible for a refurb? I'd buy it from Craiglist instead I guess...

I never bought insurance from Tmobile before, but what is the best option then if I plan to root/unroot my device with possibility of bricking?

there is no option besides having your own jtag rig and a wad of cash, once you root your device your warranty/insurance is forfeit if the warranter or insurer finds out.
what were you expecting? a brand new phone? almost all insurance claims give you refurbs...if your phone is within 30days after your bought it, you'd get a new one from TMo's store. I got a brand new phone out the box after one of my vibrants (stock) wiped everything for no reason.
free flashing email
I asked Samsung some questions back in 2.2... here's their reply...
Thank you for your inquiry. Samsung has no official released statements with regards to the Android 2.2 Froyo as of the moment. The 2.2 that is released is currently for the international models only and not for the US Galaxy phones. Unfortunately, if you have installed an unofficial Android 2.2 update on your phone and if the phone will not work due to this third party software, Samsung will not be liable for the damage on the phone. In case this happens, the phone will hev to be repaired/reflashed for free, provided it is still under warranty.
Sincerely,
Technical Support
Yda
and as for the messed up replacement... the ones I've gotten have been in better shape than the ones I lost/zapped with bootloaders/damaged....
last time I replaced one, I was told it was a $89.00 fee if water damaged... cheaper to dunk-it then cough up new... with the premuim insurance coverage was only $5 bucks to overnight the GB bootloader (operator failure to follow instructions) fubared phone that was covered under warranty....

Forced Update

Anyone get forced into updating? I have been delaying the update for a day, and it just suddenly rebooted my phone and tried to update it for me instead.
if you dont want the update then you better do something about it stat. get it rooted and either freeze a few particular files or get a custom rom on there.

Are you talking about 4.3? I didn't think that was live yet
Yeah 2 times. I didn't know that anyone can force you to do anything..... ATT is pushing MF3 like an mf..... I had mdl a "friend" Stole it and sold it.... lied to att. now have to buy a gs4 off craigslist stat. Or else I owe them 600 dollars.
You can get overnight repair if you call 611 and on att you have a year warranty havent said anything and I've bricked about five of these..... I have one to brick today so I can send it back... Any ideas or anything to try that someone is scared to do. I'm not scared to brick it..... ATT device support center isnt too happy with me though.

Read your contact. They can "upgrade" the firmware when ever they want. And quit bricking your phones. I hope you get caught.
You are a funny person. You really think sammy has time to check every single phone and even look at the software on it. You have a one year warranty. If I want to brick my damn phone because of "defective hardware" meaning if my q-fuse is not intact I dont want the phone. They are breaching their own contract when they blow a fuse on the board. I mean that is just a ridiculous way to **** us...... I wonder if we take it apart and just solder a trace where the q fuse was if we would be able to downgrade. But then of course I would be breaking my warranty.

Grow up dude. Take responsibility for yourself.
You should have read the contract with at&t before contracting. They have full rights to force an update regardless of any say you may have. They believe their forced updates benefit their carrier service and customer support, they'll never change that for the modding community. As for intentional bricking, if caught doing it multiple times it's considered warranty fraud which voids your warranty infinitely until getting a different device; and no you cannot fight it (try lol). Samsung themselves are strictly against rooting their new line of devices and have every right to modify your phone through at&ts forced updates to prevent it. Your options are either disable the updating, or flash a custom ROM which won't allow it.
There is multiple threads here that already explain all of this.

Former AT&T rep here. We have every right to deny you service for modifying or tampering with a device. Samsung can and will check the KNOX Warranty flag to see if it's been tripped, and if that's the case, you're liable. You are under a contract and service agreement. It's not the company's fault if the user didn't read the fine print and signed the contract anyway. That's called ignorance on your part.
Also, the fuse they blew is software based, but hardwired onto the board itself. Good luck with modifying that and seeing if it will stick. Also, don't be surprised if AT&T goes after you legally.

Moto doesn't care either I've done the same thing with atrix. They don't have time to really gaf at this point.... Do you realize how many people a day send their phone in for warranty replacement.... and individuals check each and every phone. You blow my mind. I've been with ATT for 13 years.... Since the cingular days..... I signed a contract with Cingular. And ATT is Cingular they bought out ATT but kept their name.... I also have the grandfather plan and got my 10 dollars for the class action lawsuit for when they forced me to get a data plan when I got the first gen iphone.... So I am very experienced with ATT and they back down and ***** out at every threat..... I say I wan't to back out cause I do read fine print and they make me pay for unlimited data or what was then have the audacity to send me a message saying that I am a threat to the network because I am in the top 3 percent of data users..... hmmmmm theyve breached their own contracts..... They want to throttle my data but when I bought an iphone years ago they forced me to get an unlimited data plan.... hmmmmmm then want to throttle my data.... they do not care about their customers. Just money hungry giants and I will do everything in my power to **** them as hard as I can...... As for samsung..... I've read my contract with them about their device.... I'ts not theirs it's in my possession, ergo if I feel like breaking it via any software method I want to I have that right and they just have to keep them coming and keep on replacing them because I'll claim that kies did it every time and they can't take any legal action there is no way in hell they can prove that kies didn't brick my phone..... so thanks samsung for 9 gs4's you too ATT cause your reps are uneducated and I mean that is of course why they are reps and work for your company I bet they don't even have good benefits... wait that is a min wage job isn't it......? ATT is a joke and will soon go bankrupt..... Pretty bold statement? Talk to me in 5 years..... I signed my contract 13 years ago..... And I buy my new phones for 700 no contract extension... They've never sent me a revised version of it.... and after the first two years they just assumed I wanted to continue service with them without even asking me just continued to bill me..... Why are they offering phones running android which is based on Linux which is open sourced.... and that is what google intended it to be... that's why I had to get the nexus version. But also continue to have animosity toward ATT for all their bull****.

How to make my phone eligible for factory warranty?? Help!

So I went into my local mall and entered the Verizon store. Reason for my visit was to see if i can get a brand new s5. The s5 is waterproof and has a shield that covers the charger port. Well from normal use mine broke off. I just got my nexus 6 in and plan on selling my s5 to offset some of the cost. The clerk in verizon days he can process the warranty claim for me but if verizon determines it wasn't a phone defect I'll get charged up to 500 dollars. He also said if the Bluetooth wasn't working or something yes there wouldn't be any question it was my device and a worthy factory warranty claim. My question to ypu guys is does anyone have method to do just that. Not just disable my Bluetooth or anything that would suffice but break it lol. The phone is no where.near a year old yet. I could sell mine the way it is but it's not waterproof anymore. Any suggestions or advice on how I can permanently disable a feature that would allow a factory warranty claim to go through successfully? Please don't tell me I'm being greedy or just sell it the way it is. If u have some info that could help I'd appreciate it.
Thanks very much

If it's just the charging port cover buy a new one instead of purposely breaking the phone. It's not like they cost $100.00. Remove one screw and replace it. http://www.amazon.com/Unknown-S5-charging-port-cover/dp/B00MP1TLX4

No problem, I thought they would be more money but that's dirt cheap. I was pretty shocked.
Also, what you are essentially asking is for someone to help you commit fraud with the warranty.
replacing the cap is a much better option for all involved. good luck on selling it and with the new device.
I wouldn't think asking someone to help me permanently disable a feature on my phone is any different than downloading a rom that unlocks paid features no?

You are asking to help you commit insurance fraud. That is breaking the law and goes against all XDA stands for.
