If I claim damaged to asurion will they make me send in my phone(bricked)? vs.. claiming lost phone I can keep my original? .... is this cheating?
Cheating? No.
Insurance fraud, a criminal act? Yes.
is me bricking the phone covered legally? If I tell them I messed it up will they cover it?
Un-brick it....seriously. There is enough information on this fora to fix 99.9999999% of all problems with this phone. Stop being lazy.
Well.. I've got an galaxy s 4g.. so not so easy..I've been fairly persistent in trying for about 3 days.. problem is no .pit file available. I've tried everything.. get a couple tar's to load about 95 percent but fail right at the end. I do have an extra tmo phone i can use for the time being but the sms4g forum is a very small group compared to the vibrant community here. I know something will probably come out in time but the way things look on our board it could be some time.
You're in the wrong forum...
It is insurance fraud....get F*cked if you are trying to "beat" the system. You knew what could happen if you played around, and now you want to wash your hands of it. Have patience.
I mean you could tryv and play the pitty game and say "i master reseted it and it broke idk whats going on?!?" Then hope they dont find out. And if they do say you have no idea what they are talking about.
(waits for trolls to say zomg thats wrong!)

Insurance don't care what you've done to the phone as long as your willing to pay the deductible.

In that case, I'd say they also don't mind raising the rates for everyone to cover all the extra payouts caused by these sort of folks. Sure insurance goes up every year but if you think this irresponsible behavior has no bearing on that then I must strongly disagree.

Broken devices are still worth money. A bricked phone can still be reflashed by the manufacturer and resold as a refurb, or components from it can be reused on other damaged/broken devices.
If you report it damaged you have to send the device back. Lost, you don't because you obviously don't have it. Stolen, you don't, but you'll need to provide them with a police report # to get a replacement.
Well I struggled a bit with this.. but bottom line is I had no intention of damaging the device.. kinda like if I took it to a water park and it got wet...or when I take it when I go jogging I know I'm at risk at dropping it. It's not like I damaged it on purpose just to get a new one. So I made the claim and was honest when describing the damage... it said I needed to call them for them to research my damage more.. so I called and they didn't ask me anything.. just where I want the new one sent. They also told me I had the option of sending the damaged one back or not.. if I didn't that Tmobile would charge me another $30 dollars. I specifically asked her if I wanted to keep it for future problems like glass breakage or something else and she said it was totally up to me and just to remember the $30 dollar charge.
So tonight someone posted a .pit file and of course it worked and I'm back up and running so tomorrow I'll call and let them know it started working again and will send the replacement back and hopefully get my $130 returned sooner than later. THanks for the replies.. was good to get some feedback.

Thanks, wow I didn't know that, I'll probably cancel my insurance then. It sounds more like a rip off now, monthly payments + deductible for a refurb? I'd buy it from Craiglist instead I guess...

I want to brick my hero because all my paint is chipping off (end button, back button, and home button) and the dust under the screen is gettin bad. They told me that it cannot be fixed and there is nothing they can do because it is a known "cosmetic" problem and the insurance only covers functional damage. If I give them a non functional brick then I can get my hero replaced. I am running Fresh 2.0d if that matters.
So you want to commit insurance fraud?? Awesome!

People like me have a family plan with 5 phones on it (all of them have insurance so I pay $35 a month in cell phone insurance for the past 5 years) and have not filed a single insurance claim ever. I am sure that the $300 refurb unit that they will send me will not kill them. Hell, I've paid roughly $1700 in insurance fees over the past 5 years and if Sprint and Htc would have fixed this problem when out was discovered it instead of sweeping it under the rug I would not have to be shady about it.
I just took mine to the service center and they fixed all that for free and it took them 15 minutes.

hey guys i dropped my HD2 yesterday when coming back from airport , ****ty day
ok i called Tmob and they told me i do have insurance and i'd have to pay $130 to get it replaced, my question is if i call up the insurance company and tell the i need replacement because my screen is all cracked up , do they ask for the old phone to be sent ?
Or should i just call and tell em i lost the phone and get the new one ?
because i am planning to pay like $150 and fix the screen and sell the phone and recover the money.
And also finally XDA is out of stone age design lol
Pretty sure you have to give the phone back, if you say it's lost they lock the phone from being used again....or so that's what they told me when I asked them.
Tell them that you lost it. Don't say it's damaged, or you'll have to return it. The guy above me is wrong, they can't block the phone..
Well, they can, but all you have to do to reuse it on tmo again is give them a different imei lol all they can technically block is the iccid from your sim.

I think you might be out of luck now. If you already told t-mobile about the screen, it's going to be flagged so next time you call and say it got lost, they are going to think you are doing insurance fraud. they will probably than tell you that now you are going to have to pay $200-250 whatever the upgrade fee is if you want another hd2.
I dropped mine after only having it for a month. Ended up calling HTC, I sent it to them and they replaced the glass for $50. Good as new. Good luck.
If you broke the phone and still have it they are going to want it back. If you lie and tell them you lost it its insurance fraud. Not worth it unless you want to deal with lawyers and court. Man up, you broke your **** and have to pay for it.

Hey guys, please help, my keyboard 2 W S Z, that whole roll of keys stopped working and down volume key just suddenly stopped working. I can't go into download mode anymore, don't have TEP, I wanted to get it fixed at the service center, that guy said when they open the phone they said there is liquid inside, what a bunch of lying bastards, when I told him I am very careful with this phone, never in contact with any water, he said maybe you used the phone when it's raining and got water inside, I don't know, can't help you. these F**king guys really pissed me off, he gave me the phone and went to help some guy who wanted to buy a cell phone lol, spent less than 30 sec with me, didn't offer any help, just wanted me to buy a new phone for 600 bucks.
What can I do now?
If they put the message on your account that your phone has water damage you're SOL. however it sounds like they didn't give you much time which is in your favor in this case, call Sprint customer service and say that you went into the store and were ignored when you told them you weren't interested in buying anything but only wanted a repair, ask to be escalated then request that they send you a replacement so you don't have to take more time out of your busy schedule to deal with incompetent Reps whose only interest is making a sale.
Careful...it only takes 30 seconds to check to see if the water damage label is triggered and if there is water damage Sprint won't touch the phone. If you get somebody over the phone to send you a replacement they'll see it on the phone you send back and charge your account for the replacement phone. Water damage seems like an awfully good explaination for the type of problem you're having on the phone...it's just like if you dump some coffee into your keyboard on a computer certain keys short out and stop working. I know it sucks but it makes a lot of sense to a 3rd party looking at your phone.
Why buy a $500 and no insurance (tep) then expect sprint to give you help?

soliciting a bribe isn't cool at all.
FYI (to the OP) most CSR reps can add this to your account for you for no extra cost (beyond the monthly premium). I had a rep add it to my wife's line (temporarily) so that she could to the "4 bad phone swaps to get another device" thing.. she had to do that dance to get rid of her intercept and she now has a transform. The guy on the phone w/ me (at the time) said that any CSR would be able to do that for me.
Don't pay a guy from XDA w/ 3 posts to add anything to your account that you can add w/ just a phone call.
Just sayin'
Not true. You can not just add TEP at any time. It will get added but quickly removed when Asurion checks the account and see it is not within 30 days of purchase or S&R fee.
And more than likely (being a Sprint Tech myself) you did somehow get your phone wet because keys going out is a usual sign. I'm sorry if you felt disrespected at that store but they followed the policy which is what we have to do. As soon as LD is found on board, we flag it and the rest is handled through Asurion (every carrier uses them).
But since you do not have TEP, you are kind of SOL. At that point you can either buy a new phone for full retail or use upgrade if available. Or try and find an old phone at home or from a friend. Or check ebay or craigslist places for people selling Sprint phones with a clean ESN.

Warranty is through Samsung and doesn't cover LD, physical, lost/stolen. TEP is well worth it. And if you want to use your warranty, your right you can. Ship your phone to Samsung and wait for them to determine what was wrong with it. It should only take 4 weeks or so.

For $1k bet, I'll post a screenshot. I'm telling you that they did it w/ my wife's phone 2 months ago. We opened our accounts In Sept.. You're calling me a liar ??
I was up 4 levels from the dorks that answer the phone when u first call. I escalated to that person's supervisor, then tech support level 2, then that person's manager. THAT person added the equipment protection plan for the remainder of the month, then credited my account the price so it was free.
I swear I'll post screenshots. That person even told me that any CSR can add it at any time.
Please get your facts straight.
I see a lot of misinformation being thrown around, so I'll just compile this little FAQ on how everything actually works. Feel free to point out anything I've left or any mistakes you think I may have made.
Q: What exactly is "Sprint insurance"?
A: Sprint TEP insurance is a combination of two things, ESRP and ERP. ESRP stands for Equipment Service and Repair Plan. ERP stands for Equipment Replacement Plan.
Q: So what's the difference?
A: ESRP is anything in a Sprint repair location. Including but not limited to part replacement, software updates, and advanced exchanges. Anything software related (such as updates, resets, etc) are always free. If you do not have ESRP or the full TEP, you may be charged $35 to replace a part or exchange the device.
ERP is everything else outside of that, which is handled by Asurion. This includes lost/stolen, liquid damaged, and physically damaged beyond repair. Depending on the type of device, there would be a $50 or $100 deductible to replace it. Usually, the replacement device is overnighted to you.
Q: So about the Evo and it's charging port, what is that covered under?
A: It depends. The technician would have to take it apart and look at it. If the charge port is broken cleanly free from the board, it's a known issue and can be replaced free of charge, even without TEP/ESRP. If the solder joints appear damaged and circuit board is peeled, it is not covered in-store and you would be referred to Asurion for ERP.
Q: Cracked screen?
A: No longer covered under ESRP, as per policy. Referred to Asurion. Sometimes a one-time courtesy screen replacement can be done, but the ESRP/TEP rules also apply in terms of a $35 charge.
Q: But what about warranty?
A: Warranty only applies to one thing in terms of Sprint: Batteries. 1 year after the initial activation of the device, a defective battery may be exchanged. After that one year, the system will not populate a replacement battery. As far as anything else with the actual device, the manufacturer warranty is not honored. If you think your problem would be covered under the warranty, you would have to contact the manufacturer, not Sprint.
Q: I'm paying $7 (soon $8) a month for insurance, why should I have to pay a deductible to get a replacement?
A: It works the same way as car insurance. If you damage your car, they don't just fix it or total it without a deductible. You're getting a "like new" device, for at least half (in terms of the Evo) of the original price. It doesn't matter what price you initially paid for it, you're not paying for a new one. Some times new ones do come, consider yourself lucky if so.
Q: Why does one store tell you one thing, then another store tell you another?
A: Every store is different. Each is bound by policy, called Methods & Procedues. However, there is some flexibility underneath that. Depending on the situation, it also may depend on who exactly you speak to in the store. From my experience, it happens most often with customer care/tech support and corporate retail locations. 3rd party dealers (preferred/co-branded/etc) have a lot stricter guidelines and therefore cannot operate with as much flexibility.
The one thing customers hate the most is the "run around" feeling. I cannot count the numerous times that a customer has called into Care to be told one thing, only to be told no in my store because we simply cannot do that. One good example is "Sure, just go into that store and they'll give you a brand new Evo out of the box". 1. Our store simply cannot do that, at all, period. 2. Care cannot see that the phone is clearly wet, but the expectation has been set that the customer is getting a brand new phone, so we get a bad score.
Again, this is just a FAQ to clear up any misconceptions. This is not pointed at anyone in general, I just hate when people spout off about things they don't understand.
Thanks for the info. This answered a few questions I had been wondering about.
totally, thank you very much

You are very lucky then as me and almost everybody I know or have read about got refurbs. Some appeared to have been taken in and then reissued without any repairs having been made. Let's hope your luck holds out.
I hope they ship an unopened, in box, hardware 004 model to me. I cracked the screen 10 ways to Sunday the day before yesterday, and I filed an Asurion claim. Funny thing is, I called and my early upgrade was successful, but after paying $100, I am asking myself, do I really want the EVO 3D? Maybe if I get $150 from the buyback program.......neh......who knows.

Thanks for the info... Makes me really wonder if it is worth it as you can get a used phone for $200 or so. So if on average you dont use this every year, just better to save the 7-8 a month and the 100 deductible and get a used one as seems you can just get a referb anyway.
ALWAYS treated good with the stores..
faithful customer for 13 years..
wi11ie
My Sprint store opened my phone and the charging port was clearly off the board. They told me I'd have to go through Asurion for a replacement.
Had to pay for screen repair 4 months in (sunspots) $35
My 3G borked 3 weeks ago and ordered a replacement $35.
The replacement came in (refurb) with the same sunspot in the same place (appx). Ordered another replacement, checked two days later, no order made....tech in store made another order, came in two days later with the same defect. Rep gave me a NIB 004 on the spot.
After paying $70 for repairs, I ended up ahead by $14 and a brand new phone for the trouble. Now if I had done something out of the normal 'repair' options, a different story all together on cost.

Not sure. The guy opened the phone and the port fell out. He didn't examine it, he just put the phone back together and said I'd have to go through my insurance. The guy didn't seem very helpful and was borderline rude, not the usual friendly sprint rep/tech. He didn't even look up my account info or anything. he just assumed I had insurance (which I do)

Depends on the issue, as stated in the bit about the charging port.
So, I have Best Buy mobile insurance, which I pay 10bucks a month.
It's been almost a year, since I bought it with Epic 4g, so I was thinking about using 120$ I spent.
I just read the article about Nexus S 4g getting new 2.3.7 upgrade, so that flared me up a bit about using the insurance to get rid of Epic 4G.
I saw a lot of people few weeks back, whom had full bricks caused by a beta Bonsai rom. I know that those people went to Sprint stores and got new/refurb Epic 4G. Although I think this is 100% user's fault, some people got their new phones for free. So I am thinking about doing that similar thing.
I am trying to get that same rom, or similar and just brick my phone and bring it to BBM. The worst thing that could happen is getting the refurb epic. But I think even it's a refurb, it would still be good as new. This way I can resell epic as new, instead 1 yr old with scratches/wears.
What do you think? Is it just too evil??
I wouldn't rely on it...but if i was trying to brick my phone I'd just check clear bootloader in odin.
Oh really?
That simple to hard brick the phone?
I didn't know ODIN was that dangerous
Best Buy insurance gives you new phones. Usually takes 2-3 business days to get it and they take your old phone. You will either do without, use their loaner or reactivate an old phone. They pretty much don't care why your phone is broke.

Came here to say this. When I signed up for BB insurance, they said as long as you can bring it in they will replace it. It can be run over by a car and smashed to bits, no problem. But if it is lost or stolen then you're SOL. So yeah, if you want to get it replaced, why not just drop it in some water or toss it as high in the air as you can and watch it shatter on the cement? If you do that, please record it so we can all watch. hahaha

this is not insurance fraud. this is one thing insurance is actually for. if you break your device, wether it be in a fit of rage, or a pure accident, you pay a deductible, return the old equiptment, and get a new one. everybody wins including bestbuy on keeping your premium payments, their 3rd party insurer, who makes the deductible, you for getting a new phone, and the circle of insurance goes on.
No deductible with Best Buy.

They absolutely do not. This thread probably will be closed but if say he was "clumsy" . pays a ton of money for insurance and has to turn in his old phone to be refurbed...is that fraud?

even nicer. i guess thats why its 10 bucks instead of 8 like sprint. i was just saying, this is how indemnity companies make thier money. there is a formula, and they know what they are doing.
hey, i think the better thing about sprints insurance, even though there is a deductible, it covers lost and stolen.
Yes so that has to play into.your insurance decision...are you clumsy, a flash addict (brick), forgetful or in a bad neighborhood...lol.

they do aggressively tell you how to take advantage of it. they did went over it again for me when i bought my tab. "If you drop it in water, make sure you run over it with your car and bring as many parts of it as you can." "Uh, ok."
Insurance is the biggest fraud ever invented in our world.

haha thanks for advices!
If "accident" happen soon, I will definitely use the insurance. But the process looks more daunting.
They also told me that no deductible / accidental damage coverage for the phone. But I did some more research and found that there is a small print, where they have to send my phone for repair. So it takes them at least 3weeks to decide if it is repairable or not. I think their deadline is 30 days, which after that I can be angry at them and they have to give me a new phone.
I found many experiences with BBM insurance is bad. Almost all of them had to do wait 3 weeks.
Although I have retired HTC Vogue, I don't know I would happy without Epic for a month...
haha

So let's say I'm tired of my car, I want a new one. So I torch the current car to the ground, and you're saying this is not fraud because this is what insurance is for?
They changed that. Sprint phones are now part of Rapid Exchange. They just order you a new phone. They were all set to order a new one for me for the PRL issue but the day I headed over there was the same day Sprint fixed the error in their network.

Talking about forcefully destroying a phone to exploit an insurance process IS insurance fraud. Saying you are going to "stick it to them" because they "stick it to you" is just as ridiculous... because, guess what. You willingly pay for a luxury item and you accept the charges they want to charge you.
Just like Kodeen said, insurance is NOT a future phone upgrade service, just like how car/home insurance is NOT a future car/home upgrade service. Just remember that if you start exploiting the system, you are part of the problem of rising insurance costs AND revisions of insurance policies. I just await the 1000 threads complaining about how horrible Sprint/Best Buy is because of insurance process changes.
But if you have no decency, I guess what do you care??

Yes. If he lies to make the insurance claim, then it's fraud.
If he goes into Best Buy, says he bricked his phone on purpose, and they're ok with that and give him a new one, then it's not fraud. Maybe they would be fine with it, and that would allow him to sleep at night knowing that he got a new phone honestly. If he says he was "clumsy" when he wasn't, or makes up any other untrue but somehow justified-in-his-own-mind claim, then he's lying and committing fraud.
Personally, I agree that $10/month is too much for insurance. That's why I chose not to get it. It's not like anyone makes you go to Best Buy to get their insurance.
playing by the rules is harder , u u d d l r l r b a b a select start makes life easier with the new hotness phone. Business don't go by morals but mear profit.
