Future of unlocking LG devices? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Loki has been patched, although it took LG almost a year to do so. We can run KK on the G2 by keeping the old bootloader which still has Loki exploit.
But anyone who buys a G2 now (which will ship with KK) or future devices like G3 will need to find a new exploit. And those are getting much harder. Just look at the situation for S4, >1 year and still no exploit, same for S5.
HTC is the only truly dev friendly oem left IMO. Do you think LG will start following Samsung and make their phones almost impossible to unlock?

you are funny with the HTC completely not true though. Look at HTC ONE x
Also we are able to downgrade the boot loader at least I did...
Also that is normal business to find a new exploit...
And LG has 2 devices called Nexus. There you can do all.
You knew what you were getting, if not you were a fool...
You have hundreds of alternatives... that are dev friendly.
And HTC, lg, Samsung ain't one of them, they are not the only ones making phones you know....
As said there are brands that you just click to.root in the menu... And I am not talking about the CM devices either. Just Google a bit...

You can choose nexus line products...
And I have a surprise for you as it seems nobody told this to you yet
. All is from CHINA.
Even if it says from somewhere else, there are parts from CHINA...
And I suggest not to be sad about buying a non friendly dev device so to speak, because that's what you knew from the start...
There are AOSP variants, nexus variants other providers.. etc... bashing a bit about lg g2 in this subject makes no sense. They did not sell it as a dev device....
I personally prefered the non nexus crowds as majority of those are noobs that can't do nothing without a one click solution where they need a manual to show them how to operate the one click...

I think you have misunderstood the point, but I blame myself for not saying it clear.
"Chinese products" means the products are designed and made by Chinese, for instance just in case you haven't heard one or you heard but don't realize they are from China, ZTE, Huawei. It is NOT the "Made in China" I was talking about. Hope you get it now.
Also, I thought Nexus is made by LG. I might be wrong.

Not sure if you listen to the American Propaganda "banning" ZTE, Huawei devices. Or if you had a bad experience with somebody Chinese

Who cares, you said? Woww, is that what you have in mind? Anyway, who cares LOL
For the last part, yes, I'm sorry m8, I don't read all details unless I have to do some research about it.
Seriously, I know iPhone are made in China, but I don't know at which county or province.
I know some Nexus devices made by Asus but don't know which model exactly.

Apparently these eFuse chips are in all omap3 devices (including the milestone and original droid) so they likely are not as scary as some fear, but with the hard line Motorola is taking with the DroidX, who knows for sure?

Really lame that they are doing everything possible to prevent rooting their phone/using ROM's. I guess I can't recommend a Motorola anymore.
Wow that's crazy... this kind of scares me. What if htc decides to follow in the footsteps of these manufacturers. Hopefully they remain just and fair. If u pay for the device, its ours. No longer does yur hand need to be involved.

I think HTC takes a different approach. Motorola is like Apple, HTC is like Google.
I'm sure HTC sees the benefit of a few people rooting their devices so they remain in the media, show how "cool" the phone can be and all the added features. Fewer still will take the plunge and root their phone. I wonder how many rooted EVO's there are, probably around 2-3% I would guess, if not less. Sure, HTC takes "token" steps to lock us out, but nothing that hasn't taken more than a few days to break into, and I think HTC knows that.
It's a good trade off that Motorola just doesn't understand, and I'm sure HTC's phones will continue to sell very well.
It could have been a stipulation from Verizon too...but I doubt it.
HOLY hell !! that's crazy !!
Thats brutal! i hope that HTC understands a similar move would KILL their handsets.
but i have a question. if it's a hardware security feature, whats to keep someone from simply desoldering the chip?

My understanding is that the chip also holds the firmware, or part of it, so desoldering the chip would brick the phone. It may be possible to desolder the chip and replace it with a new one and copy over the firmware information. But how many would be able to do this? Very very few..probably only a handful.

I might be mistaken about this, but doesn't the original Droid have an unlocked bootloader? I mean, from what I hear, it's regarded as the original developer phone, and I can't see it gaining that title with a locked bootloader AND eFuse.

The original droid had unlocked bootloader cuz of moto's business dealings with google at the time, which was out of the norm for them. Apparently this efuse chip was in the droid, milestone, and droidx and does the the advertised capability to brick your phone, it just isn't being utilized by motorola apparently. or thats what I've gathered so far.

i agree htc is like google but im going to go a step further amd say they "want" to let us customize it as much as possible. what i think is that HTC, to keep their sales ranks, tries to comply with cell companies because, from what i understand, they are the ones that dont want us rooting mainly because of the wifi situation. im guessing also because of the bricking going on by novices lol
what moto is doing with the droid x is just wrong. intentionally bricking a device for a owner trying to customize is pure sabotage! if this happens i dont doubt theyll know the owner tinkered with it and not honor a replacement. that just sucks

i wish the g2 was the new dev phone

so rumors of the nexus 2 are circling. i had my money on the g2 being the new dev phone. damn, maybe i should send my g2 back afterall. im impatient i want the new android asap, i hate waiting for carriers to play catch up
I feel you. I love the G2, but after having so many android options on my HD2 I had high hopes for the G2. I guess I was wrong. I've already signed up for several overtime gigs on my days off. I should have enough for a nexus 2 whenever it launches.
The nexus two is still a rumor, Samsung themselves said that it was not true. I would keep the g2, because even if you do not have root(for now), you probably will be one of the first handsets to have gingerbread.
Ill be keeping my g2 because I cant see anything being better then it. Plus I dont like samsung

"All things considered, though, I think that the Nexus Two exists in some capacity and that it will be announced shortly"

Key words " I think". Samsung confirmed that they are not making it, so the likely hood that its coming from that source is very little. So yes I did read the article, problem is did you interpret it the wrong? Looks like you did....

he means that there will be another dev phone out very soon (maybe a nexus 2 who knows wut they will call it) and that samsung will not be making it. there needs to be one, 2.3 will support FFC and video calls. how can the nexus 1 do that?
also i think that you are not understanding what i am trying to say. the name of this thread is "i wish the g2 was the new dev phone" i had my hopes that the g2 would become the new dev phone. this way we can get the updates asap and not wait on our damn carriers to update.

At this point I'd pick Samsung over HTC. HTC will most likely not be an XDA's members choice of android phone in the future.
really? samsung over htc? i have to admit samsungs screen looks good, but the phones look cheap and feel cheap. maybe it was jus the demo phones i was messing around with
i really like my g2, i need a real keyboard. swype sucks and i have big fingers. the samsung with a real keyboard was waaay to bulky. then again its all ones opinion

I really like the look and feel of the g2 and all HTC phones overall, but hate how it's being locked down. I know most don't care about it being locked, but I would really like to load a different rom onto it. I'm not knocking the build quality of any G2 just the restrictions.
lol regardless of whether or not the phone is a dev phone or made by htc or samsung, the g2 is still gonna get updates faster than most other phones because there is no skin ( sense, motoblur, expresso etc...) on top of it to slow down the development. Second the main reason ( not the only one) the nexus 1 got updates faster than any other phone was because it was a product sold specifically by google. So of course the phone received update faster because it was googles phone. And since google confirmed that they would NOT be making another phone to be sold and would just focus on refining android, there will not a be another so called nexus 2 or true development phone, regardless of the carrier or manufacturer. So either way your argument is pointless. Stop worrying about future updates and whether or not your phone gonna get it first and just enjoy it.

Something I'm already annoyed about in this forum...

I understand. You love HTC. You love the HTC One. You want it to do better than the Galaxy S IV. You may not even like Samsung phones that much.
But those are not excuses for bashing one company over and over in threads that wouldn't even mention Samsung otherwise. I know I'm probably going to get some hate now because I have a Samsung phone, and yes, I just made a post explaining why I like some of its features over the One (removable battery, microsd). But I'm not saying Samsung is the very best or anything like that. I'm tired of reading threads and coming across random hate. I'll admit, there are a bunch of trolls that come over and bash the One. Bashing the S3/S4 back is not an acceptable response.
I like Samsung phones. I also like HTC phones. I'm not a fan of LG phones, however, but that doesn't mean I go around saying things like the "Craptimus G" or "I'm glad the One doesn't have XXX like the LG Optimus G Pro, that's such a piece of ****."
Some of the threads on here are so bad I feel like I'm browsing reddit.com/r/Android at times. For those of you who don't know about reddit/that particular subreddit, be glad. It's downright awful (up there with /r/Atheism).
If you did want to compare against the S3/S4, you can just say, "I feel like the HTC One is superior to the S3/S4 in XXX aspect. I'm just not a fan of Samsung phones in general." You should not say, "Lol, the S3/S4 doesn't even compare to the One. The only reason anybody bought that plasticy piece of **** was because Samsung has more marketing. It's terrible in every aspect."

If this forum is like the Teg3 One X forum it'll actually get worse. After release, issues that are bound to come up (because no device ever produced has been issue-free or met everyone's expectations equally) go through Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' five stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and, finally, acceptance) as part of their discussion. As an example, there were clearly assembly-related QC issues and a Wi-Fi issue HTC publically acknowledged with the One X. It took dozens of pages of posts with people sharing the same issues before the "defenders" reached EKR’s "acceptance." And mentioning the "S" word unless followed by a derogatory adjective is a sure way to get the crowd riled. For some reason HTC forums tend to be more emotional. If you view a lot of it purely for the entertainment value it's kind of fun to watch. But knowing that, the best advice is "don't poke the bear."

Are the people who work for HTC USA brain dead?

DISCLAIMER: I posted this on Android Central and reposting here with the same title in the hopes that someone from HTC will read it and maybe do something about it (doubtful but worth a shot).
After the updating debacle that has taken place with their previous phones, how in the world is it possible for HTC to take so long to release updates for the HTC One in the USA? It isn't like the update isn't finished yet b/c it's been available in other parts of the world for over a month now! They also can't blame the carriers b/c they haven't released the update for the unlocked 32 GB or the 64GB develop editions either! This can only be attributed to the fact that the people who work in their USA offices are either 1. brain dead or 2. are sitting on their hands and simply willing to let the company go into bankruptcy.
HTC stated when the One was released that it would receive a TIMELY update to 4.2.2 but even I'll admit I was foolish to fall for their nonsense once again. I'm done...I will never purchase another device from HTC again. If they want to know why they're continuing to lose market share even with the best device on the market, it's b/c their company has AWFUL customer support, they don't communicate with their customers at all, and they simply don't stand by their word or their products. They haven't even made a single statement regarding why the US release has been delayed...it's simply a joke.
I'm sorry for posting this simply to vent but at this point it's 100% justified and HTC deserves the backlash they're receiving.

I've been pinging @HTC on Twitter asking for ANY information regarding 4.2.2 on the unlocked US phone. NOT ONE reply.

I think we need to make this a viral thing, the only way they will listen is if we stand together.

Most phones I've had, with 4.2.2 , has been buggy, had bad battery drain issues, and hasn't added a whole lot more than what we have with 4.1.2.
For me, the best version of android, was gingerbread. I would easily run gingerbread on this phone if I could!!

Totally irrelevant to this conversation. This update has been available in all other regions of the world for a month now. The fact that the US hasn't received it has nothing to do with bugginess or anything else. It's simply HTC being HTC.

The problem is getting any kind of coverage to raise awareness. The publication sites where coverage would lead to going viral also receive large advertising $ from HTC and affiliates. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.
Check out, galaxy s3 , Sony Xperia zl , galaxy s2, a lot of people are reverting back to android 4.1.2
You seem like a hard to please guy, if HTC released 4.2.2 and it was buggy, you would be complaining again.
It wasn't totally irrelevant.

They DID release it! Just not in the USA for some reason. That's the problem.
I'd be very happy with an announcement saying hey we found bugs and are fixing them or hey we decided to skip 4.2 and go to 4.3. But the silence is ridiculous.

The reason is HTC 's primary market is China. The rest of europ also runs the same M7 model. The US is always going to be the black sheep of the tech world when it comes to getting timely updates due to how our carriers all have something different. Sprint being the blackest of the sheep with their CDMA crap, etc.
That doesn't explain the silence regarding the unlocked models sold directly by htc.

Once again the unlocked and developer edition models don't need any carrier approval so this is not a legitimate excuse.

What's ridiculous is people complaining about manufacturer updates on xda-developers forums.... If the phone was locked down like the DNA was for a while I'd understand. But it isn't. You can have just about any software on your phone that you wanted. Not that many unlocked were sold in the US and if you bought a dev edition id imagine theyd assume you know what to do to get the latest greatest... Not really something HTC is going to lose sleep over

Same problem in Australia. I get carrier delays, but what is the issue with unlocked models?

Unreleased software also means unreleased kernel sources. 4.2.2 based roms like Cyanogenmod 10 would be so much better with released 4.2.2 source dontcha think?

HTC must be quaking in their boots with this thread you have started, this thread could bankrupt HTC!!!
Does your phone work? Can you make and receive calls?? If yes, then what's the issue? What feature/features do you want the most from 4.2.2??
Please buddy, who really cares?? Your ranting about something you can flash right now, go to the development section, plenty of 4.2.2 roms there choose one, flash away, I'm sure the devs here will do a better job than HTC will!!
For me I've owned over 15 different android phones, this phones beats them all, it has everything. The best battery life I've ever had!

You are on XDA DEVELOPERS? If you have found the forum find the info you need and put 4.2 onto the phone. I don't care how fast a carrier does or doesn't update a phone because I do not buy phone based on that. I buy them based on developer support and let me tell you this phone has that in plenty. I agree it is BS that HTC Sony and others can not get timely updates but having hardware venders that provide crappy software support is nothing new to me. Been going on for 20 years. You ever own a sound blaster product??? So now that you have yelled and gotten it off your chest go on over to the DEV section and do something about it.

If you watch the video, he has Magisk installed and if you've read through the SamPWND root thread, you'll know that we cannot utilize Magisk due to various reasons. A locked Boot Loader for one...

Sadly
Sounds too good to be true, g955u (TMobile) will never see this hell my asop dream has been dead, so all other roms have been fake asop. Well at least for my device . Torture coming from a recalled Nexus 6p

Great, I'll root once we get decent AOSP builds!
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'd probably agree with MrNegative there. Given their track record, it's painfully clear that Samsung has no intention to sell directly to the customer - meaning they will never unlock their bootloader as their contract forbids it. So, unless some rogue employee leaks all of their internal software or a massive exploit is found, my hopes of an AOSP rom on Snapdragon is pretty low - especially when TWRP essentially relies on it.
Is Samsung to blame? Not really. It's the carriers who want branded devices and to push "their" experience onto you. Locking a bootloader, aside for security, also ensures that you can't tamper with their software and harm their brand.
If you want Snapdragon, a better bet is Google or OnePlus - the companies that don't use cancer like CSC and sell directly to the customer.
I am however very grateful that someone took upon the task of developing an AOSP port for the Exynos chipset. Video looks awesome, and I can't wait.
Well, yeah you're right. I can't argue with that mate. Just to be clear I'm not a mean person, I just expect the worst so I'm not let down. Really tho I'm a nice guy, if you can look past the unshakeable pessimistic life views I have (and don't mention). Idk I just wanted to say ur right, my posts are less than positive but that doesn't take away the fact I am still greatful for anyone innovative. tldr; I'm negative but won't go looking for oposition. Hence my 2+ years of lurking and quiet thumbs up for those who are deserving.
