[Q] nexus 4 using mobile data even mobile data is disabled - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i am having a problem with my nexus 4. i use wifi at home and i never use mobile data cause it is expensive so i turned off the mobile data in settings>more>mobile networks and when i am connected to wifi and when i open certain apps like maps, play store or facebook i see a location symbol in the notification bar for a sec and i get a message from my network provider that i am charged some amount for mobile data usage, the usage is between 1kb - 4kb always. i am losing a lot of money like this. i think when i open these apps they are using mobile network to get the location and that is what im being charged for, but since i turned off mobile data shouldnt these apps use wifi instead i have android 4.4.2 and i am only seeing this problem since 1 week no problem before. is anyone facing the same issue too.

Have you tried changing the default apn to something that is invalid or asking your provider to block data access?

You could try to turn on airplane mode

Noob question about data setting

Hi guys,
Got my HD yesterday...love it x100000. My first android so im still getting to grips with it all but what a fantastic phone.
Anyway my question is just about the data connection set up. I was just looking through the settings making sure everything is how I like it and I stumbled across this:
Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks and at the bottom there is an option which says 'Enable always-on mobile data'.
What is this and what does it mean? It says it uses more power on some mobile networks so do I turn it on or turn it off?
I have a wifi and mobile network widget on my home screen cause I like to be able to turn them on and off quickly.
If someone could just explain to me exactly what this setting is and whether I need it on or off.
Thanks a lot
This is your 3g connection. You should switch it off when you're not using it as it's a battery drainer. The always on option is good if you're waiting for a lstge ota update ir something similar and you have an unlimited data cobtract.

I see, but the thing is if I have Enable always-on data yet I have a mobile network widget on my home screen and I turn it off what is actually on?
I have sort of interpreted this always-on setting as:
If you have you mobile (3g) network turned on and have the always-on setting on, then when your phone goes into sleep mode the 3g connection is maintained and apps can still sync whilst your phone is locked/sleeping.
If you have your mobile network (3g) turned on but have the always-on setting turned off then whenever you lock your phone and it goes into sleep mode it is no longer connected to the 3g network and apps and stuff cannot sync (unless you're on wifi obviously). And as soon as you unlock the phone it will reconnect to the 3g network.
And turning the mobile network off from the widget or in settings overrides the always on setting.
Like I said this is only my interpretation of this setting...I've searched google and found almost nothing concrete about it just some opinions and I have searched through the full user manual for the desire HD and this setting has no mention.
So what do you think? Anyone else have any knowledge of this setting?
im not sure about this but i think it means that it doesnt connect, disconnect, connect again whenever you open or close the internet. its always connected, but not always active, so its faster to start up. its like leaving your wifi on all the time. theres always a connection but its not always passing data.
i leave mine always on because it doesnt eat much battery and it makes connecting over 3g much faster.

my friend just gave me the phone, i never used android before - didnt know.
thanks for the info though
Ah ok, understandable.
In the Wireless Settings, towards the bottom, there's settings for Mobile Data. You can toggle it on and off from there.
be warned that it will still connect though, and it has a nasty habit of if someone sends you a MMS it will connect to the mobile network to download the message, and if you are not in range of a connectible WIFI source then it will keep the mobile network connection alive until you get in range of a connectible WIFI source. If your phone just so happen to sync anything you usually sych using data you just may see a higher phone bill.
This is what i miss about Windows Mobile, it asked if you would like to download the content from MMS not just do it automatically.
Just turn Auto-Sync and Background Data off? I've never had problems going over my bill.. and MMS has never charged me for data usage..
If you are rooted, install DroidWall from the market, and block any app you want from going to internet when on 3g.

windows mobile had some good aspects...
installing apps directly to sd card was one of my favorites
(it was such a simpler time then)
no complaints about android though! in the few weeks ive had this phone i loved it more than the 3 months or so my tilt2 lasted
get the app apn droid. it has a widget for turning mobile data on and off. i used it when i had a g1 on at&ts network. works great.

true, but when you turn off auto sync and background data the weather app stops working (if you like up to date weather).

[Q] Mobile data is occasionally lost after switching wifi

Hello everyone,
As the title says, my N4 occasionally loses mobile data connection, most of them happen after a wifi switching back and fort. When the connection gone, i always went to Mobile network setting to ensure that Mobile data option is checked.
The problem can only be solved after a reboot.
It's quite annoying because i'm using a Tasker profile that use mobile data to determine current location in order to toggle wifi on my favor. When it goes off, nothing can happen and i have to do all that switching stuff myself, then lead Taskers' automatic abilities to nonsence
So is there anybody has this issue and how to fix that?
I'm using Xenon 7, Franco kernel
Thank you

Data connection turns itself off when phone is on WiFi

When I am on WiFi connection for some time, data connection will turn itself off automatically and won't turn back on when I am out of WiFi range. So if I forget to turn data on manually, my email etc won't update and I have missed important business emails that way. Anyone else have this issue and what to do? Let me add that I don't have battery saving mode turned on.
This is not a issue it's a feature, turn on switching in wifi settings so when are not in wifi range it will switch automatically to data.its called smart network switch.

I switched the suggested setting on but the problem persists.
I am pretty sure this has been going on since the latest OTA update.
Definately OTA update caused it. Fa tory reset fixed it.

Dreadful AT&T GS7 Edge Quick Setting Toggle

Alas the same fate from Galaxy S6 the dreadful no Mobile Data toggle is not there anymore, please tell me there is some sort of program that will fix this I don't want to deal with this again after kitkat and marshmallow.
I don't know of any quicker way than to drill down into the Data Usage settings (unless you want to turn off mobile voice too, in which case you can toggle Airplane Mode and then optionally toggle WiFi back on, which will also give you WiFi Calling if you have that enabled).
Just out of curiosity, why do you toggle Mobile Data so often as to benefit from a quick setting for it?
Thing is I don't like using my data when there is Wi-Fi but for some reason the data is still used while the Wi-Fi is connect, and no the Wi-Fi booster option you can use isn't on. It's quite annoying repetitively going into the connections and what not to turn it off rather than having a quick button to use in the notification dropdown.
And when I do turn it off it has that absurd mobile data turned off in the notifications it won't let me swipe it away just sits there in sure that bothers someone else. I have tried to make it go away but nothing works. Other than that I just would like to know why there isn't a mobile data toggle

I can see how a mobile-data toggle would be a useful workaround for that problem. But have you tried to fix the problem itself? Has it occurred on more than one WiFi network? When you turn off mobile data and use WiFi, does the Internet connection ever drop out?

Yes it has, no the internet connection doesn't drop out at all, I don't know what's going on but yes a mobile data toggle would be great I just don't see why AT&T supposedly removed it.
If you could get your data bug fixed, there wouldn't be much need for the toggle. Is it any app in particular that's using mobile data despite having a WiFi connection to the Internet? Or does everything on your phone do that?
Everything on the phone, and yes a mobile data toggle would still be required whether it's fixed or not, as I said having to repetitively go into the settings to turn it on and off is quite annoying especially when I need to use it.
try using Usage Manager app to toggle data..its faster than going through settings.
May I ask what are you talking about a usage manager

It's a system app. Think it has a widget, too.
Did you happen to purchase the phone from Samsung itself?
If you use nova launcher u can add a widget thru nova actions that takes u strait to mobile data settings.
Alright thanks for the help guys I had to snoop around to find usage manager apparently it was disabled on the phone, that is much better and faster

I use this. With the edge screen you can access from anywhere.
