[Q] Mobile data is occasionally lost after switching wifi - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
As the title says, my N4 occasionally loses mobile data connection, most of them happen after a wifi switching back and fort. When the connection gone, i always went to Mobile network setting to ensure that Mobile data option is checked.
The problem can only be solved after a reboot.
It's quite annoying because i'm using a Tasker profile that use mobile data to determine current location in order to toggle wifi on my favor. When it goes off, nothing can happen and i have to do all that switching stuff myself, then lead Taskers' automatic abilities to nonsence
So is there anybody has this issue and how to fix that?
I'm using Xenon 7, Franco kernel
Thank you

Noob question about data setting

Hi guys,
Got my HD yesterday...love it x100000. My first android so im still getting to grips with it all but what a fantastic phone.
Anyway my question is just about the data connection set up. I was just looking through the settings making sure everything is how I like it and I stumbled across this:
Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks and at the bottom there is an option which says 'Enable always-on mobile data'.
What is this and what does it mean? It says it uses more power on some mobile networks so do I turn it on or turn it off?
I have a wifi and mobile network widget on my home screen cause I like to be able to turn them on and off quickly.
If someone could just explain to me exactly what this setting is and whether I need it on or off.
Thanks a lot
This is your 3g connection. You should switch it off when you're not using it as it's a battery drainer. The always on option is good if you're waiting for a lstge ota update ir something similar and you have an unlimited data cobtract.

Pardon my appalling typos.

I see, but the thing is if I have Enable always-on data yet I have a mobile network widget on my home screen and I turn it off what is actually on?
I have sort of interpreted this always-on setting as:
If you have you mobile (3g) network turned on and have the always-on setting on, then when your phone goes into sleep mode the 3g connection is maintained and apps can still sync whilst your phone is locked/sleeping.
If you have your mobile network (3g) turned on but have the always-on setting turned off then whenever you lock your phone and it goes into sleep mode it is no longer connected to the 3g network and apps and stuff cannot sync (unless you're on wifi obviously). And as soon as you unlock the phone it will reconnect to the 3g network.
And turning the mobile network off from the widget or in settings overrides the always on setting.
Like I said this is only my interpretation of this setting...I've searched google and found almost nothing concrete about it just some opinions and I have searched through the full user manual for the desire HD and this setting has no mention.
So what do you think? Anyone else have any knowledge of this setting?
im not sure about this but i think it means that it doesnt connect, disconnect, connect again whenever you open or close the internet. its always connected, but not always active, so its faster to start up. its like leaving your wifi on all the time. theres always a connection but its not always passing data.
i leave mine always on because it doesnt eat much battery and it makes connecting over 3g much faster.

Atrix Google Market Activates HSPA+ Data While on Wifi, Causes Wifi to Stop Working

UPDATE: When comparing to my coworker's phone (who doesn't have this problem), we went through all settings/etc and matched them up exactly. The only major difference between our two phones was that I was running Launcher Pro. When I uninstalled it, this problem went away completely. HSPA+ did get activated in the Google Market, but it didn't hinder my browsing experience. Anyone else having this issue, are you running Launcher Pro? And if so, if you uninstall it, does it fix the problem?
I know that there is an ongoing issue that Motorola is looking into concerning HSPA+ data connectivity dropping out. This is not that issue.
Here's the scenario:
- Atrix 4G purchased on release date
- Using 4G SIM card
- No SIM unlocks
- Have 4Gig Tethering plan
- Set to AT&T US HSDPA APN (have tried AT&T US Tether and AT&T US wap.cingular)
- Connected to Wifi
- Issue occurred prior to rooting and after rooting.
- Issue has occurred since day 1 of using device.
Issue: Launching Google Market and browsing around will eventually start showing connection timeouts, typically after looking in a few app descriptions.
What I notice:
- When connected to wifi, the cell data connection gets turned off (i.e. the grey up/down arrows are no longer showing). I assume this is how it is supposed to work (since if on wifi, no need for cell data connection).
- When launching the Google Market application, and after browsing for a few seconds, I notice the cell data connection doing something (grey arrows come back, and then will briefly show black arrows, then back to grey).
- Once the issue occurs, I attempt to browse in Dolphin or even the XDA application, and it doesn't connect.
- Turning wifi off then back on fixes wifi until I try Google Market again.
- Turning cell data off allows Google Market to work fine with no issue.
Thoughts:
- It seems that when connected to wifi, the cell data connection should be getting overridden regardless.
- Somehow Google Market is causing the cell data connection to activate and messing up wifi
- This happened on a 3G SIM and a 4G SIM (so it doesn't seem like a connection problem, simply a software issue)
- I have a coworker who has an Atrix as well and does not have this problem when connected to wifi
- I have other devices connected to the same wifi without issue (thus not a wifi router issue)
Any and all help is truly appreciated and thank you in advance!
Nice first post and seems pretty accurate. I switched on airplane mode and then just enabled wifi to test this out and had a zen-like market experience. Not a single hang up. Hopefully this will help lead to a fix. Thanks.
Have you tried switching off your data connection before connecting to wifi?
I had a similar issue where my wifi would be on simultaneously with my data connection so I just hit airplane mode whil wifi was on that turned off both wifi and data then I re-enabled wifi (airplane mode still on) waited for it to connect then I turned airplane mode off. Never had the issue again

Hopefully motorola looks into this as this is my only true gripe at the moment. I go to dl an app and it stops at a random percentage, I go back into market and see the app is paused. I cancel and Redownload and usually works. I also get a timeout error almost every time I go into market and have to choose retry or close.

Turning off data connection does solve the problem, however that is only a stop-gap and I have to leave the data connection off (then remember to turn it back on when I leave my wifi area). No other application I use has this issue, so I would expect it's a software problem, but it doesn't seem to affect every Atrix owner.

Yeah I've done that too, sadly it still crops up for me.

Exactly, those are my experiences as well when on wifi with cell data not explicitly turned off.
UPDATE: Turns out that when factory resetting, the market app when first run works perfectly (doesn't try to activate cell data when on wifi). The problem is that the market app auto-updates to a version that has this problem.
Here's hoping for a fix soon. Thankfully Juice Defender gives me an automatic way to handle the cell data issue since when it detects it's on wifi, it turns off cell data so I don't have to.
Update
I posted an update in the original post. It seems Launcher Pro was the culprit.

[Q] Wifi randomly switching on then off again?

Hey all,
Bit of a strange one, I switch my wifi and mobile data off at home as I have my laptop for email and don't need my phone for anything on the net. Strange thing is now and again I'll randomly get an email notification so somehow some data has gotten through, as I use Extended Controls to rename the APN to cut off the mobile data it can only be wifi and as it happens I noticed tonight the wifi was on, I flicked over to look at the state of Extended Controls widget and it was on...then switched off by itself.
Is this an app doing this or something Android is doing or Samsungs variant?
I am using VillainROM 1.4
Any ideas?
Thanks
Russ

[Q] nexus 4 using mobile data even mobile data is disabled

Hi, i am having a problem with my nexus 4. i use wifi at home and i never use mobile data cause it is expensive so i turned off the mobile data in settings>more>mobile networks and when i am connected to wifi and when i open certain apps like maps, play store or facebook i see a location symbol in the notification bar for a sec and i get a message from my network provider that i am charged some amount for mobile data usage, the usage is between 1kb - 4kb always. i am losing a lot of money like this. i think when i open these apps they are using mobile network to get the location and that is what im being charged for, but since i turned off mobile data shouldnt these apps use wifi instead i have android 4.4.2 and i am only seeing this problem since 1 week no problem before. is anyone facing the same issue too.
Have you tried changing the default apn to something that is invalid or asking your provider to block data access?
You could try to turn on airplane mode

Mobile Data and WiFi

How does the phone prioritize between Wifi and Mobile Data? Say you have both Wifi and Mobile Data turned on does the phone use Wifi if you have an active connection? Can I leave Mobile Data turned on and not worry about using up my data if connected to Wifi?
Noticed that I have no Mobile Data toggle in the quick toggle menu. Since I am on a limited Data plan I like to toggle it on and off. I did find the toggle in settings but that is annoying to get to.
I decided to try out Tasker to make a task when at these cell towers turn on Wifi and turn of Data. Turns out with Tasker you need to be root to turn off Mobile Data.
If you leave your data on, you will have battery drain and also more data tracking taking from you as well.
You don't need both on.
Any recommendations on being able to toggle Mobile Data on/off with out having to go into settings every time?
There are multiple settings you can use: Like WiFi preferred, or you can even prevent apps from using particular networks you specify, or block particular programs from network access all together. It may take some time in experimenting but there are many options to choose from.
Hello , i have similar problem, when is connected to wifi , dont disconect data, i see all trafic go to wifi, but the battery drain fast, and if i dont disconnect data manually charge is slow too!
I try many thing, reset network settings, wipe cache, include factory reset, and re flash the original firmware, but the problem persist, i was call samsung support and say, we have to repair it, but i buy the phone in usa and live in spain
Any solution for that?
Thanks in advance
It will always use WiFi if you're connected to WiFi. Battery life really shouldn't change at all since no mobile data is flowing through that connection, and even with mobile data off you're still connected to LTE, it just won't use it for data.
Go to the WiFi settings and make sure smart network switch it off, otherwise it will disconnect from weak WiFi and use data.
Yes smart network is off
Download booster off
On developer option, keep mobile data turned on is off too
I just factory reset again, with out any update or software , on the first reboot this issue happen again
Make me crazy!
Thanks in advance
Nicolas
By default your phone will use WiFi for data whenever WiFi is connected. You shouldn't have to manually disconnect mobile data.
If you want to be doubly sure, have your mobile data on and at the same time connect to a WiFi that is not connected to the internet. You will find that you will not be able to browse the internet, update any apps or do pretty much anything that requires the internet.
Yes i can manually disconnect data when is wifi connected
But is miss it, battery drain so fast

I see from your pic that mobile data icon is showing at the same time as your WiFi.
Perhaps you may want to reset your network settings.
You do this by: settings > general managment > reset > reset network settings
Edit:
Never mind, i see that you've tried this already a couple of post above.
I already do , also i do wipe data and cache, factory reset, and flash original firmware , and problem persist!
